8/19 Girls OHSAA Pre-Season Invite 1st

This pasat weekend the girls (top 20) competed at the OHSAA pre-season meet.

They were led by Efa Paschka and she looked strong with a 4th place finish overall.  Next was Bella Teply who ran well, followed by Carlie Condit.  Carlie was much stronger than last year at this time and looked great.

Our next runner was FRESHMAN, Atalia Hawkins and then our 5th scorer was Addi Stephens. We got great runs from Tessa Palmer, Auna Koro and Sharanya Nair.

The team took the overall victory, and won this meet for the 2nd year in a row.  It was quite close with Lakota West who ran well and were just a few points back.

Mason Girls CC will next move on to the Buckeye Running Invite at Oeder Lake on Friday, 8/25.   This is a new venue and it looks like a fun one.  It just might be a touch warm.

9/2 Lebanon Invite

This past Saturday the Mason Girls CC team competed at the Lebanon Invitational.  This was not originally on our schedule, but was added due to last week's cancellation.  The team was not quite fully loaded as a few girls nursing some injuries and a few others were sick. So.. with less than our full squad we went to the line in the varsity race and ran well.

Efa Paschka took off and went with some strong front runners, and battled for the win. She came up a bit short, but took 3rd overall in this large field.

Next for the Comets was Carlie Condit (12) who has been running great!  She battled tough and took the 11th spot overall, and then was closely followed by Addi Stephens. Addi ran sick, but pushed through it, and did well for the team.

After our top 3 came in we were concerned about the gap to our 4-5, but a trio of Auna Koro, Talia Hawkins and Tessa Palmer came in together and rounded out our scoring to complete our score and get the win.

The team took home the team trophy despite not having our full complement there, and this was a well earned victory.  The team ran tough on this hot day, and got to put some notches in their tough belt as well.

In the JV race later that morning, the Goldschmidt sisters, Sophia and Brooklyn took the 1st and 3rd spots, with Maddie Jones in between.

The team is looking strong and trying to get healthy for the big Mason invite coming up.  It should be a good one with some tough teams bringing their squads and many strong individuals as well.  SEE INFORMATION BELOW

9/9 Mason Invite

The Girls CC team had a pretty good day at the Mason Invitational this past Saturday. With just over 80 teams present and about 3,000 competitors, the Comets stepped to the line and knew they had a good chance to win if they put a good race together. The only team standing in their way was probably the Dupont manual team from Louisville, Kentucky.  We knew they had a couple of really good runners and we had to battle them step for step.   Early in the race they got a little bit away from us. We tried to claw back but we're unable to and so the Mason team took second behind a strong team from Dupont Manual.

The Mason squad was led as usual by Efa paska and followed not far behind by Bella Teply who ran very strong for much of the race. Carlie Condit continues to have a good year and she took the third spot for the Comets.

After Carlie we were elated to see the small but strong Sharanya Nair. After Sharanya we were searching for a fifth as it is your final score in cross country and there was a big battle between several Mason runners and on this day our fifth runner was freshman Atalia Hawkins who came from way behind to a storming impressive finish.  Talia, as we call her, was back pretty deep in the field that came flying home passing nearly a dozen girls in the last half mile.

This whole team effort  helped secure the second place spot and drew us just a little closer to the team from Louisville. The team also got good production at a freshman Auna Koro and Addi Stephens continues to run tough even in the midst of nursing a cold.

Up next for Mason Girls is the Richard Spring Invite in Peoria, ILL this coming Saturday.

9/16 Richard Spring Invite Peoria, ILL

This past weekend the Mason Comets Girls XC team traveled to Peoria, Illinois to face the best of the Midwest at the Richard Spring Invitation. The race was loaded with some of the best teams in the country and the Comets did their best to hang tough.

Efa Paschka had a great day and placed in the top ten overall in this huge field. Carlie Condit continues to have an amazing year and she was the second runner across the line for Mason.  Bella Teply got out strong (as usual)  and finished well for the our third place runner in the contest.

Our 4th and 5th runners on the day were Addi Stephens and Sharanya Nair respectively. We also got a great day out of freshman Talia Hawkins and Junior, Nadia Markich, who continues to improve.

Overall, it was a good day for the Comets and they took a nice step forward as a team.

Next Saturday is the Princeton Invitational.

9/23 Princeton Invite
9/30 Nike Valley Terre Haute, IN

This past Saturday at the Nike Twilight invitational and Terre Haute Indiana, the Mason Girls CC Team lit it up!  This night meet featured teams from 11 states including several states' champions.

Early on the pace was very hot with Efa Paschka coming through the mile and two mile in blazing pace. The girls duked it out in the top three spots for the first couple “Ks” and held on to a third place overall and finish behind the Indiana and Illinois State champions.

Efa led the way with a season best time, Bella Teply and Carlie Condit did great with their first sub 19 efforts of the season.

Addi Stephens continues to improve and ran well and Sharanya Nair was the big hero of the night, having a near one minute personal best running to a scorching time.

Nadia Markich did a nice job and Atalia Hawkins rounded out our top seven scorers.  Overall, it was a great night, and 3rd place at this meet was a big accomplishment.  The girls looked strong and ready for the post season, and are clicking at the right time.

Next up for Mason Girls CC is the GMC Championships at VOA on Saturday, Oct. 14th.

The Cometw girls will be seeking their 4th consecutive GMC title and 12 overall since entering the league in 2007.
9/30 Girls Centerville Invite

10/14 GMC VOA

The GMC meet at VOA last Saturday was a bit blustery, and a bit soft, but the Mason girls ran tough and secured their 4th consecutive GMC title and 12th overall since the 2010 season.

The team scored just 33 points and took the overall win easily, and looked good in the process. The favored Lakota West girls were supposed to put up a good fight, but the Mason girls ran hard from the gun and looked strong.

Efa Paschka ran well, and logged her best time of the year.  She took 2nd and then Bella Teply had a PR and placed 4th overall.  Carlie Condit was a bit under the weather and was a few spots back, Our 4th runner was Addi Stephens who had a good day and then Talia Hawkins who lit it up with a big PR. Sharanya and Nadia did a nice job and did their part for the team as well.

Most girls were 1st team all GMC and put on quite the show in the JV race as well.  It was a great day for the Comets and we could not be more proud of their efforts.

The OHSAA District Championships are Saturday, 10/21 at VOA. The Comet girls will be seeking to win their 5th consecutive District Title and 16th overall since the 2004 season.

10/21 District VOA
The girls District CC Championship at Voice of America Park went well for the Mason Comets this past Saturday.  The Comet girls ran fast and were able to secure a resounding victory on the strength of their depth and pack running.

The race started off with Efa Paschka getting out well and running side by side with the top Ursuline runner.  Efa took 2nd and looked strong.

After Efa, Mason had a beautiful pack of runners running side by side just like coach Dobson preaches.  Carlie Condit led the pack with Addi Stephens, Sharanya Nair, Atalia Hawkins, and Bella Teply all running in tight formation.

The girls pack finally broke up with 1k to go and freshman Atalia Hawkins took off to be be Mason's 2nd runner on the day with a big personal best time.  After her Carlie came in under 19:00,  and then Addi and Sharanya all came in with season bests as well.  Bella was under the weather and ran just a bit behind the pack and Abby Slife did her part to secure the overall victory.

It was a great team victory and it looks like the girls are hitting their stride at the right time.

This is Mason Girls CC 5th district title in a row and the 16th overall in program history as a Division 1 team.

Next up for the Comet Girls will be the Regioinal Championships at Troy on Saturday, Oct. 28th at Hobart Arena.

Mason will be seeking to defemd last years Regional Title and capture their 9th championship. Mason Girls CC has qualified to state 18 times in the past 19 years.

Both the Mason Boys and Girls CC Teams are ranked #1 in the State polls.

10/28 Regional @ Hobart Arena 1st

The Mason Girl's XC team was once again victorious this past Saturday at the Regional Championship meet in Troy. The Comet girls had a tough week with sickness, and a few injuries, but weathered the storm and were able to notch the win.  The girls went in as big favorites, but Lakota West had a resurgence and looked great putting up a valiant fight.

The girls started off strong, with 5 of our girls in the top 20-30 spots.  However, a few of our girls suffered later in the race, and fell back a few spots each.  As we fell back a few spots, West then surged and picked up a few spots.  In the last 1000 meters the West girls got close to passing us, but thankfully our Comets hung tough, and fought them off.  With a strong sprint finish, each girl picked off a few girls in the last stretch and were able to get the win by a scant 7 points (which is very little in XC).

Efa Paschka was strong as usual and led the team up front.  Bella Teply came back from sickness and hung on for a strong finish as our 2nd runner.  After Bella, the team had a string of girls come in within 20-30 seconds of each other.  First Carlie Condit and then Shranya Nair, and then Mason's final scorer was Atalia Hawkins who saved the day with a strong finish passing a few runners down the last few meters.

Sadly, the Comet's normal #4-5 runner (Addi Stephens) was on the shelf with a nasty cold, but she will return this Saturday for the state meet.  Mason also had two runners in our 6-7 spots, Abby Slife and Nadia Markich did their part for the team, and fought off many team's #5 and 6 runners.

Overall, it was a true TEAM effort.  The girls each did their job as part of a team unit, and did what they had to do to help notch the win and move on to state.

The Regional title was Mason's 9th and 2nd in row. The Comet girls have now qualified to state for 19 of the past 20 years.

The OHSAA State Championships are this Saturday, 11/4 at Fortress Obetz in Obetz, Ohio.

Mason, ranked #1 in Ohio, will be seeking their 2nd consecutive state title and fourth overall. The Comets were State Champions in 2022, 2013 and 2012.

9/15 @ Fairfield won 21-14 2-3 2-2

The Mason Football team went on the road last Friday night and earned a big GMC win at Fairfield by a 21-14 final. Both the Comets and the Indians came into the affair neck and neck in the league with 1-2 records. Each was looking to springboard their way to positivity for the second half of the season. Both teams showed their physical natures and played a tough game, and in the end, it was Mason coming away with a hard-fought road win.

The Comets got on the board with 39 seconds remaining in the first quarter on Caden Ashurst 7-yard pass to Liam McManes, tying the score at 7-7.

Mason put together a nice drive to end the half. Mason senior running back Sky Talley was huge on the drive as he broke several runs of over six yards as he led the march down the field and deep into the red zone. Once there, Mason quarterback Caden Ashhurst found tight end Liam McManes over the middle for a 6-yard score. The game was tied at 7 at the half.

The Indian got a 14-7 lead after the break. The Comets turned around and went on a tough and physical drive that led them down the field and into scoring position. Temilade Adesanya punched one in for Mason from 1-yard away and the game was tied again.

The Comets made some big defensive plays in the fourth quarter and the offense equally provided the scoring punch needed to win on homecoming night. Mason scored both their TD's in the final quarter. Max Gogul had provide the only scoring for Mason up to that point on a 38-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter.

With just 513 remaining in the contest Temilade Adesanya posted a 2-yard jaunt for Mason's first TD (kick failed) making the score 14-9. Mason (4-5, 4-4 GMC) will look to close out the regular season this Firday when the host Lakota East for senior night. East (1-7, 1-8) fell last week to Oak Hills 17-7.

10/20 Lakota East won 24-0 5-5 5-4

Mason football shutout visiting Lakota East last Friday 24-0. Mason Football secures their 9th consecutive postseason berth as the #9 seed.

The Hawks kept it close thru the first three quarters (7-0 Mason). The Mason offense came alive in the final quarter, scoring 17 and putting the game away. Mason rolled up 305 yards of total offense on the night and limited East to just 168.

Comet QB Quinn Brown threw a 31-yard pass to Braden Greer for one TD while Temilade Adesanya and Chase Blevins added rushing TD's. Max Gogul a 30-yard field goal to round out the scoring.

Mason (5-5, 5-4) now prepares for the post season. The Comets will play at #8 seed Lebanon (7-3) this Friday night. The Warriors are seeking their first playoff win since 2002. Last season Mason won two playoff games over Colerain and Springboro, advancing all the way to the Regional Semi-finals.

The last time the two teams played each other was in the first round of the 2020 playoffs with Mason winning 34-16.

The winner of Friday's game advances to play either Milford (#1 seed) or Fairfield (#16 seed) on Friday, Nov. 3rd.

@ Lebanon

won 17-0 6-5 5-4

Mason Football notiched its 2nd consecutive shutouit last Friday, this time in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs. The Comets (#9 seed) defeated Lebanon (#8 seed) by a final score of 17-0. All the scoring for Mason happened in the first two quarters. No game stats have been made available for the contest.

Next up, Mason (6-5) advances to the Region 4 quarterfinals against the #1 seed Milford Eagles. That contest will be played at the Eagles home stadium. Milford defeated Fairfield on Friday by a score of 41-15 to advance.

The last time the two schools met was in 1998 in a regular season contest that Mason won handily. At the time Milford was in the GMC while the Comets were part of the now defunct FAVC. When Mason entered the GMC in 2007, Milford departed for the FAVC and is now part of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.

The Eagles were league champions in 2023 with a current overall record of 11-0 (9-0 ECC).

The winner will play either St. Xavier or Moeller in the Regional Semi-finals on 11/10.

8/4 Mt. Vernon Invite
The Comets Varsity Green Boys Golf Team opened the season on August 4th by traveling to the Mt. Vernon HS Invitational at Chapel Hill GC outside of Columbus. With an entirely new lineup of 5 players - after last year's record-setting 6 starters all graduated - the Comets came out strong, finishing in 6th place of 19 teams with a team total of 298.

Sophomore Curtis Crimmins led the way with a one-under-par 71 and tied for 5th among 95 individual golfers. Senior James Tran shot 74; Junior Blake Ernst had 76; Junior Ben Morneau scored 77, and Junior Blake Lockhart rounded out the scoring with a 79.

With all 5 players scoring in the 70's - and with a team total below 300 - the Comets are off to a strong start. The Varsity Green Boys team tees it up next on Monday, August 7th, at Wetherington Country Club in the Lakota East Invitational - a shotgun start at 8:30 am.

8/7 East Invite @ Wetherington
8/9 Anderson Invite
The Comets sent both their Varsity Green and Varsity White Boys Golf teams to the Anderson Invitational held at Stillmeadow Country Club on Wednesday, August 9.  The course was tight and challenging - and the tournament had changed courses from the previous year - so many of the 120 players at the tournament were trying to figure out how to approach each hole only as they reached the tee box.

The Varsity Green Team shot a total of 310 to finish 5th out of 20 teams, only 12 strokes behind champion Lakota West.  Four scores in the 70's by Curtis Crimmins, James Tran, Thomas Niere and Drew Freeman demonstrated the team's depth, and even their two "non-counting" scores were an 80 from Brodie Hansen and an 81 from Ben Morneau - all good rounds on a tricky golf course with a lot of Out-of-Bounds markers close by.

The Varsity White Team shot a total of 323 to finish 11th out of the same 20 teams.  Junior Blake Ernst led the team with a score of 76 while Carson Hendy added a solid score of 80 while playing in the number four position.

8/11 Tecumseh Arrow Invite
8/12 St. Xavier Invite
8/17 East @ Mason Golf Center         The Comets Boys Varsity Golf Team renewed their annual "Top 12 vs. East" contest with the Thunderhawks last night on the West Nine at The Grizzly Golf Course.  After narrowly avoiding a lot of traffic at the ATP tournament and some fast-approaching bad weather, the Comets scored a 155-160 win over a strong Lakota East squad.

Senior Brodie Hansen led the way for Mason with a score of 37 to take medalist honors in the match by a full two strokes.  Juniors Ben Morneau and Blake Lockhart each shot 39, and Senior James Tran recorded a 40 to round out scoring for the Comets.  Mason's Varsity Green Boys Golf schedule consists mainly of 18-hole tournaments, so this was the team's first nine-hole match of the year on their 6th day of competition, giving them a 1-0 match record so far.

The team competes next in the Springboro Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club, Monday, August 21st, at 10:00 am.

8/21 Springboro Invite @ Heatherwood

On Monday, August 21st, 5 members of the Mason Boys Varsity Green Golf Team traveled to Heatherwoode Golf Course just South of Dayton for the annual Springboro Invitational.  With a strong performance by 3 veteran players, the Comets recorded a team score of 311 and a 6th place finish in a deep 21-team field.

Leading the way again was Comets Junior and #1 player Ben Morneau with a fine score of 35-38 = 73, only 2 over par on the par-71 layout.  Seniors James Tran and Brodie Hansen followed close behind with scores of 77 and 78, respectively.  The Comets' scoring was rounded out with an 83 from sophomore Curtis Crimmins and an 84 from Junior Blake Lockhart.

The Comets next compete against league rival Sycamore on Thursday afternoon 8/24 at Blue Ash Golf Course in a 9-hole match hosted by the Aviators.

8/24 Sycamore @ Blue Ash         Thursday's boys golf match at Sycamore was canceled due to extreme heat. Next up, Mason competes at the Bellbrook Invite at Sugar Valley on Saturday, 8/26.
8/26 Bellbrook Invite @ Sugar Valley

On Saturday, August 26, the Mason Boys Varsity Green golf team competed in the Bellbrook Invitational at Sugar Valley Country Club. Mason finished 5th in a field of 18 teams with a team score of 317. Elder won the tournament with a score of 300 and Bellbrook was 2nd at 302.

Leading the way for the Comets were Senior Brodie Hansen with a 77 and Junior Thomas Niere with a score of 78.

The Comets compete next this afternoon in a tri match at Shaker Run against Lakota West and Mason White.

8/28 West @ Shaker

On Monday night at Shaker Run Golf Club, the Comets scored an exciting one-stroke victory (154-155) over league opponent Lakota West.  Even though it was a home match, Mason was in unfamiliar territory playing the Woodlands nine at Shaker Run on recently-aerated greens.

Lakota West started out strong with match medalist Toku Fujiwara shooting an even-par 36 in the first group of the day.

After 5 of the 6 groups had turned in their scores, Mason was trailing by 4 shots, 156-160.  High School golf matches count the best 4 scores of 6 players, so with 5 players in, each school was hoping to replace its highest score with their final player's score.  Lakota West was trying to replace a 41, and their final player shot a 40 - reducing their total by 1 to a 155.

Everyone waited on the last card to arrive, as Mason Junior Blake Ernst had been playing well in the final group.  Blake two-putted the last green for a par on that hole and a score of 37, replacing a score of 43 and improving Mason's total by 6 and giving them a one-stroke victory over a very talented Firebirds squad.

Mason's very consistent team had scores of 38 (Senior James Tran), 39 (Junior Ben Morneau), and 40 (Senior Brodie Hansen) to go with Blake's runner-up medalist score of 37.

Mason takes a 7-day break from matches as the long Labor Day weekend approaches.

The Comets next match will be on Tuesday, September 5, at Walden Ponds Golf Club (site of the GMC Tournament) against Fairfield.

9/5 Fairfield @ Walden Ponds         On Tuesday, September 5, the Mason Boys Varsity Green Golf Team traveled to Walden Ponds Golf Club to face Fairfield.  The Comets were led by co-medalist and sophomore Curtis Crimmins, shooting a fine score of even-par 36.  Junior Blake Ernst was next with a score of 37 (+1).  Senior James Tran carded a 39, while Brodie Hansen (12), Ben Morneau (11) and Blake Lockhart (11) all shot scores of 40 for the Comets.

In the team competition, Mason slowly pulled ahead of Fairfield and ended with a 16-stroke victory by a score of 152-168.  The Comets were extra vigilant of the course layout and conditions during the match at Walden Ponds, as Walden is the host of the GMC Championship Tournament - which begins in only 2 weeks and determines the league champions for the entire season.  Mason competes next in the Hadley Invitational at Glenview Golf Club this Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm.
9/10 Hadley Invite @ Glenview

On Sunday, September 10, Mason's Varsity Green Boys Golf Team competed in the 49th annual Hadley Classic Golf Tournament at Glenview Golf Course in Sharonville.  There were 26 schools from all around Southwest Ohio competing in the event.  The Comets played well throughout the day, scoring 296, and won the tournament by a narrow one-stroke margin over second place St. X (297) and over the two teams that tied for 3rd at 298, Bellbrook and Kettering Alter.

Leading the way for the Comets was sophomore Curtis Crimmins with a birdie on his final hole to get to one-under-par 71.  Senior Brodie Hansen was close behind with an even-par round of 72.  Junior Blake Ernst shot 76, and Junior Ben Morneau contributed a 77 to the Comets "best 4 of 5 scores" total.

The Comets compete again in less than 24 hours, traveling to the Alter Knights Invitational at Miami Valley Country Club in Dayton on Monday morning, September 11, for an 11:00 am shotgun start - competing in yet another 18-hole Invitational event to prepare for the fast-approaching GMC Tournament and for the Sectional Qualifier in October.

9/11 Alter Invite @ Miami Valley
The Mason Boys Varsity Green golf team played in the Alter Knights Invitational at Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton on Monday, September 11.  The team had a balanced performance once again, with its four counting scores separated by only 5 strokes.  Mason posted a team score of 306 and finished 5th among 21 teams.

Sophomore Curtis Crimmins led the Comets with a score of 3-over-par 74, tying for 10th place among 105 golfers.  Senior Brodie Hansen scored 75 (T-14); Junior Ben Morneau shot 78 (T-26); and Senior James Tran completed the scoring for Mason with a round of 79 (T-35).  Mason was only 10 strokes out of first place and scored below their team average for the year on a very difficult golf course.

Mason competes next in a home match with LaSalle at Shaker Run at 4:30 pm this Wednesday.  After that, the Comets next competition will be the GMC Championship, to be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 19 & 20, at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton.
9/13 LaSalle @ Shaker

The Mason Boys Varsity Green golf team defeated the Lasalle Lancers by a score of 162-166 at Shaker Run Golf Course Wednesday on the Meadows nine.

Senior James Tran was co-medalist in the match with a score of 39 (+3), while 4 other Mason players all contributed scores of 41.  Those players were Juniors Thomas Niere and Blake Ernst, Sophomore Curtis Crimmins, and Senior JB Lang.

Next up for the Comet golfers is the GMC Tournament, held over two days - Tuesday, September 19, and Wednesday, September 20 - at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton.

The Comets have won three consecutive GMC Titles and 4 overall since entering the GMC in 2008.
9/19 GMC
9/20 GMC
The Mason Comets competed in the two-day GMC Championship on Tuesday and Wednesday this week at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton.  Mason got off to a slow start on day 1, shooting a 157 on the first of four nines.  The Comets came back strong during the afternoon nine on day 1 with a season-low 146 and finished day 1 in second place in the ten-team league tournament.  Mason was only 3 strokes ahead of 3rd-place Lakota East but also only 11 shots behind first place Lakota West.

On day 2, the Comets began play scoring better than normal with a team total of 151.  However, the team fell into 3rd place part way through day 2 since Lakota East was off to a fast start.  While falling into 3rd place, though, the Comets were actually closing the gap on first place.  After 14 holes on day 2 - so through 32 holes of the 36-hole tournament - Mason had pulled into a 3-way tie for first place with the two Lakota schools.  The Comets were unable to finish as solidly as needed and completed the tournament in 3rd place.  Lakota West won by four strokes over Lakota East.  Mason's performance was excellent for a team of first-time GMC Tournament participants, and the team begins now preparing for the Sectional Qualifier at Glenview golf course on October 5th.

Leading the way for Mason was their #6 player, Junior Thomas Niere.  Thomas recorded scores of 71(-1) and 74(+2) to finish second individually in the 60-player tournament.  Thomas had a wild two days on the golf course. His first round included a double bogey as well as 6 birdies, and his second round included a triple bogey on the 5th hole followed by the rarest score in golf - a double eagle (albatross) score of 2 on the par-5 sixth hole!

Joining Thomas in earning 1st-team all-GMC honors were Sophomore Curtis Crimmins (149 - 4th place) and Junior Ben Morneau (153).  Curtis now has the team's best average at 38.36 for nine holes, while Ben has the team's second-best average of 39.12.  Both Ben and Curtis are in the top 8 in scoring average in the conference for the entire fall season.

Rounding out the scoring - while earning 2nd-team all-GMC Honors for their scores - were Senior Brodie Hansen (163), Senior James Tran (162), and Junior Blake Ernst (163).  It's a reflection of the team's depth that they were able to place all 6 starters onto one of the two all-league teams.  Mason has its next 18-hole tournament this Saturday, as 5 players will travel to Columbus to compete at Clover Valley Golf Club in an Invitational hosted by Columbus Bishop Watterson.
9/21
9/23 Bishop Watterson Invite @ Clover Valley         On Saturday, September 23, the Comets traveled to Clover Valley Golf Club north of Columbus to compete in the 22-team Columbus Bishop Watterson Invitational tournament.  Mason finished the day in 4th place among the 22 teams with two individuals tying for 4th place individually in the 110-player field.  Juniors Ben Morneau and Thomas Niere each shot scores of even-par 72 to lead the Comets, and Mason finished with a team total score of 309.

It was another wild day on the golf course for Mason Varsity Green, as Junior Blake Lockhart was even par through his first 5 holes with 5 different scores on those holes.  He opened with an eagle (holing out from 115 yards away in the fairway), and then followed that score with a par, a double bogey, a birdie and a bogey - the same score as if he had made pars on the first 5 holes.  Later in the morning, Ben Morneau holed out from 124 yards away on a par 4 for a score of 2 and another Comets' eagle.  Steady play took Ben the rest of the way to the clubhouse at even par, and Thomas tied him with a smooth round of 72 also.  Senior JB Lang scored 82 for the Comets' 3rd-best score, and Senior James Tran rounded out the scoring with an 83.

The Varsity Boys Green Golf team has two competitions scheduled this week.  On Tuesday 9/26, an internal match against Mason White - the teams' Senior Night - will take place at Shaker Run Golf Club at 4:30 pm.  And on Wednesday 9/27, the top 6 players for the team will take on Moeller in an 18-hole scrimmage match at Glenview Golf Course - the site of the Sectional Qualifier on October 5.

The Southwest Boys Sectional is slated for Thursday, Oct. 5th at Glenview. Four teams per sectional, & 4 individuals low scores will qualify to District.

9/26 Fairfield @ Shaker (Tri)
9/27 vs. Moeller at Glenview         In a slightly unusual scheduling maneuver, the Mason Comets Boys Varsity Green team competed against the Moeller Crusaders in a late-season, 18-hole scrimmage at Glenview Golf Course on Wednesday, September 27th.  Playing without their 2nd-best-averaging player due to illness, the Comets posted a strong team total of 300 to win the scrimmage.  The Crusaders were unable to finish the entire 18-hole competition due to time constraints but were on a trajectory for a team score of 312.

Junior Thomas Niere took medalist honors for the match and posted the low score for Mason with a 73, while junior Blake Ernst was right behind him at 74.  Senior Brodie Hansen shot 76, sophomore Curtis Crimmins had 77, and senior James Tran finished out the scoring with a total of 80.  The coaches at Mason and Moeller were both happy to schedule the scrimmage at Glenview as their teams prepare for the start of the state playoffs in D1 Boys Golf, the Cincinnati East Sectional at Glenview Golf Course.

The Comets next competition will be in that event on Thursday, October 5.  At the Sectional, the top 4 teams and top 4 individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to compete in the District meet to be held on October 11.
10/5 Sectional @ Glenview         On Thursday, October 5, the Mason Boys Golf Team competed in the Boys D1 Sectional Qualifier at Glenview Golf Course.  The top 4 teams of the 14 teams assigned to Glenview advanced to next week's District meet at Heatherwoode Golf Course.  At the conclusion, the fact that 12 of the 14 teams were able to post scores that would have been good enough to advance in a different Sectional revealed just how loaded the field was.

Mason posted a solid score of 305, with sophomore Curtis Crimmins shooting the team's 5th-best score of 79.  All 3 juniors recorded counting scores, with Ben Morneau leading the team at 74, Blake Ernst next at 76, and Thomas Niere posting 78.  The Comets' lone senior, Brodie Hansen, followed his score of 40 on the first nine with a grinding 37 on the back for a total of 77.  Every single shot was important; Mason posted their team score at about 1:00 pm and had to wait nearly two hours for the remaining schools to finish.

At the conclusion, Mason earned the last (4th place) District qualifying spot by a single stroke over this year's GMC Champions, the Lakota West Firebirds.  Lakota East and Moeller tied for first at 301, so the Comets were only 4 strokes (one per player on the four counting scores) from winning the tournament.  Loveland was 3rd at 304, and Lakota West was the last team score to post at 306.

Mason competes next along with 15 other teams at next Wednesday's Boys D1 District Qualifier at Heatherwoode, where the top 3 teams and top 3 individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the State Championship.

The Comets are the defending District Champions and have won 2 D1 Titles (2022, 2012). The Comets will be seeking their 6th trip to the OHSAA State Championships in the past 7 years.

10/12 District @ Heatherwood 5th place       The Comet Boys Golf Team came up just 9 shots short of the final qualifying spot to the state championship in Wednesday's Boys D1 District Golf tournament at Heatherwoode Golf Club in Springboro.  The three qualifying teams were Springboro, St. X, and Lakota East.  The 3rd place East Thunderhawks - with a lineup of 5 Seniors - posted a team score of 306.  Mason had scored 315 in the first wave of tee times and finished 6th of the 16 teams at the conclusion of play.

Leading the way for the Comets was their #5 player, junior Blake Ernst.  Blake shot 38 on both nines for a solid, team-leading score of 76 (+5).  A score of 72 qualified individual players to advance to the State Championship, so Blake was just a few swings away from that number.  Junior Ben Morneau and sophomore Curtis Crimmins both shot 79's for Mason, while junior Thomas Niere and senior Brodie Hansen each shot 81.

The Comets now look to the future as the 2023 season has concluded.  For a team with a lineup of 5 players who were all new to Varsity A competition, it was a fabulous year.  With 4 of today's 5 players returning for next season, the Comets hope to find a way to lower their scores enough to challenge for the GMC Championship and a spot in the State Championship in 2024.

State

at College of Wooster

Mason Girls Tennis had a "championship" weekend! The Comet doubles duo of Pratyusha Chaudhuri nd Emma Wagner earned a Division 1 OHSAA State Doublesd title on Friday and then followed that up on Saturday with an unprecendented 7th consecutive OTCA State Team Championship.

Wagner, just a freshman and Chauduri, sophomore, claimed the doubles championship after a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over New Albany. Wagner and Chauduri entered the state tournament as the Southwest champions and faced the team of Violet Tuttle and Soph Uijtewaal from Hudson High School in the first round. The Comets won 6-1, 6-1 to move on to the quarterfinals.

The semifinal round, which kicked off Friday play, was the duo's toughest test of the day. Chauduri and Wagner had a back-and-forth first set against Libby Alderman and Tyra Butler of Worthington Kilbourne. Alderman and Butler dragged out that first set to 6-4 but Wagner and Chauduri rolled that win into the second set and won 6-1 to secure at least a second-place finish.

After a drawn-out semifinal, the final between the Comets and Richie Francois and Paige Cornelius of New Albany was a faster affair. Wagner and Chauduri quickly got out to a 4-0 start. Even with the excitement of pulling out ahead, the two underclassmen stayed focused and constantly checked in with one another. No other doubles team at the tournament gave out more high-fives to each other than Chauduri and Wagner who also competed as singles players this season.

Their chemistry as a team shined throughout the finals as the two matched every shot sent their way. The Comets won the first set 6-0 and followed that with a 6-1 win to claim the state championship. This is the first state championship for both players.
