The Mason Cross Country Comets opened their 2018 campaign at the Moeller Invitational hosted just down the road at Christ's Church at Mason last Friday night. The Comets suffered a narrow loss to rival St. Xavier 35-38 losing in the final half mile.

The Comets were paced by a stellar performance of Junior Johan Meyer who finished just two seconds away from winning in third place. Seniors Jagger Vetter and Isaiah Kelly ran solid races finishing 4th and 6th respectivley. Sophomore Austin Cooper and Senior Brogan Doran rounded out the scoring for the Comets. Junior Micah Champagne held down the number six man while Freshman sensations Alex DeRoussel and Aiden Amshoff were the next two runners for Mason.

The Mason Boys Cross Country team ventured to the idyllic farm of former senator and current Ohio attorney general Mike DeWine for their third Dual at the DeWine's. The Comets won handily defeating the Lancaster Gales with a perfect score of 15-48.

The top five sweep by the Comets was their first shut out in the past several decades. Junior Johan Meyer was first man for the second week in a row, scoring his first high school victory. He was followed closely by his teammates Seniors Jagger Vetter and Isaiah Kelly. Right behind them was Junior Micah Champagne and Senior Brogan Doran to round out the scoring. Freshman Alex DeRoussel and Senior Andy Carter completed the top seven. 

The Mason Boys Cross Country team braved stiff competition, tropical storm Gordon, muddy conditions and a swollen creek to sweep all three races (Varsity, JV 9-10, JV 11-12) at the 44th Mason Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. An army of volunteers prepared the Corwin-Nixon / Pine Hill course well during the week and maintained the course during the 13 races throughout the day. A special thank you goes to all of them and the City of Mason Parks Department.

The Mason boys cross country team made their annual trek on Saturday to northern Indiana for the prestigious Culver Invitational at the Culver Military Academy. Tying their best finish ever, the Comets placed third in the Elite race.

Using a tight pack and number of strong finishes, the Comets flew once again. The green and white was led by Junior Johan Meyer. Meyer was followed by Senior Isaiah Kelly and Junior Micah Champagne. Freshman sensation, Alex DeRoussel ran a breakthrough race to enter the scoring for the first time in his career as fourth man. Senior Brogan Doran rounded out the scoring with Senior Jagger Vetter and Sophomore Austin Cooper finishing in the top seven for Mason.

The Mason Mens Comets Cross Country team ventured to the Bluegrass State for the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday. Racing a field of over 56 teams and over 400 runners, the Comets established their position early and never looked back.

By the 1000 meter mark, a pack of six Comets was firmly entrenched in about 15th-20th place. The pack moved up some during the race and clearly was the class of the field. As the fifth Comet finished, the announcer said "Here comes Mason's pack, give them the victory!".

The Green and White was led by Junior Johan Meyer. Within 12 seconds his fellow-scorers had all finished. In order: Senior Isaiah Kelly, Freshman Alex Deroussel, Junior Micah Champagne, and Senior Brogan Doran. Senior Andy Carter and Sophomore  Austin Cooper rounded out the top seven.

The Mason Boys Cross Country season entered the championship phase last Saturday, opening with the GMC Championships at VOA Park. The Comets won their fourth consecutive title with an impressive showing from first through seventh man.

All seven Comets earned first team all conference as the Green and White outscored second place Lakota West 23-59. Mason was led by Senior Isaiah Kelly who ran a breakout race to garner the runner up position. His time of 15:36 makes him number 3 all-time in Mason history.

The next five Mason runners all clocked significant personal records led by Junior Johan Meyer, Freshman, Alex DeRoussel, Senior Jagger Vetter, Junior Micah Champagne and Sophomore Austin Cooper. Senior Brogan Doran also ran a fine race as seventh man.

The Comets GMC title was their 8th overall since entering the league in 2007.

DISTRICT CHAMPS!

The Mason Boys Cross Country Team began their journey to the state meet Saturday at the District Championships at VOA Park. The Comets led the way taking their 11th consecutive district championship. The Comets led second place Turpin 34-66 followed by Elder and Lakota West.

Mason ran with a solid pack led by eventual Senior runner-up Isaiah Kelly. He was followed closely by Senior Jagger Vetter, Junior Micah Champagne, Freshman Alex DeRoussel, Junior Johan Meyer, Senior Brogan Doran and Sophomore Austin Cooper.

Mason will compete at the upcoming Regional Championships this coming Saturday, Oct. 27th at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio. The top 6 teams will qualify to the State Championships in Hebron on Saturday, November, 3rd.

The Girls CC Team opened the 2018 season at the OHSAA Preview event for the top 20 teams in Ohio at National Trail Raceway.  The ladies did pretty well.  The girls had a nice group with newcomer Maddie Ullom up front and Faith Min / Ally Kouche not far behind.  Ava Stover had a good day, as did Lily Hallum and Kiera Doran.

The girls placed 4th in a strong field and had some promising signs for the future.  Catie Courtney also WON the girls open race today, in a photo finish.  Great job!!! 

Next up the team competes at the Moeller Invite on Aug. 24th.

They young ladies of the Mason cross-country team had their first local meet with the entire team at the Moeller Primetime Invitational on Friday night and earned a big win!

The Mason Girl's Cross Country team had a good outing at the 44th running of the Mason Invitational.  The course was wet and soft in the morning, but the girls still ran solid times and put on a good show for the home crowd. The Comets raced to a 1st place finish with a team score of 69 points!

Mason was led once again by Maddie Ullom who placed in the top 5 for the 3rd time this season.  Ava Stover stepped up big and ran well for the Comets in the 2 spot.  Faith Min continues to run well as does Ally Kouche, both of whom placed in the top 20 in a tough field.

Overall the team looked solid against Turpin and Loveland and Ursuline.  As the day went on the course fell apart and the girls in the open races had to deal with much tougher weather and a horrible footing.  It was a good day for the Comets and many girls are taking nice steps forward as we progress toward the post season.  

Next up for the JV Comets is the Cedarville CC Invite on Saturday, Sept. 15th. The varsity gets back into racing at the prestigious and tough Culver Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22nd.

Last Saturday at the Cedarville Invitational the girls did well considering the heat and humidity.  With a race temp of over 80 degrees, and zero shade, they performed as well as could be expected.  The team consisted of a split squad of girls as we sat out 5 of our top runners.  With this partial team of varsity athletes we were still able to muster a win and did very well all things considered.   T

he team was led by Maddie Ullom.  She took 2nd overall and continued to look very strong.  After Maddie was newcomer Ellie Bevan.  She ran in the #2 spot and did great, placing 9th overall!   Megan Miller returned to form and placed 3rd for the Comets. Erica Fennimore and Manuela Capiello rounded out our scorers and did quite well in their role as varsity for the day.  We got a great production out of many of our varsity B girls and they were able to secure the win for the Comets over Kings and Sycamore.  It was a good day, and the girls are heading in the right direction.  

Next up Mason Girls compete at the prestigious Culver Invite on Saturday, Sept. 22nd.

At the annual Culver Invite this past Saturday, Mason girls had their best race in a few years with 12 girls under 20:00 minutes and many PRs / season bests.  The team took the overall title by just 3 points in our first win at Culver in 9 attempts. 

Maddie Ullom was the top finisher with a 2nd place overall run in this strong field.  Then we had a great pack of 4 in a row; Lily Hallum, Ellie Bevan, Faith Min and Erica Fennimore. The pack running was a thing of beauty, 4 girls within 2 seconds! Brooke Harvey and Ava Stover finished out our top 7.  We had great production out of our JV girls too with a perfect score in the JV race, and 2 girls under 20:00 in that race as well.  (Aria Hawkins and Manuela Capiello)  

  Great job!  

Saturday was a great day for the Comet Girls CC team at the Louisville Classic as the top 7 varsity girls rolled the field with just 41 points and finished first overall. 

The team was led by Maddie Ullom who ran to a 3rd place overall finish in this large multi-state field.  Maddie was followed by Brooke Harvey who had a great day!  After Brooke was Aria Hawkins who surprised with a personal best time, and then Faith Min and Lily Hallum were close behind. 

The girls ran in a tight pack for 2K then split up to crush the field on a warm and humid day on the once NCAA championship course.  The team is really deep this year and is improving nicely.  We are very excited about GMCs and are hopeful for a good post season.    

The Girls will be off next week as they prepare for the GMC Championships on Saturday, October 13th at VOA.

At the GMC Championships this past Saturday at Voice of America Park, the team battle was quite fierce between Lakota East and Mason!   The race started off fast with the top 7 coming through the mile hot, around 5:35-5:45, then they ran as a pack for a bit but split up later on.  Maddie Ullom took the lead midway through the race, and battled with two East girls. 

Next, Faith Min broke away from the pack and ran strong to a 4th place finish.  After Faith was a pack of Lily Hallum, Ally Kouche, Aria Hawkins and Ava Stover who all finished within a few seconds of each other.  All of these girls, including Brooke Harvey finished in the top 14 places, which gives them the rank of first team all-league.  Great job! 

 In the final team scoring, the team scored just 32 points, but sadly East bested the Comets by 2 on this day with a final tally of just 30 points.   Mason girl ran great with 5 out of 7 personal best times and a great team effort. 

In the JV race, Erica Fennimore and Ellie Bevan led from the gun and ran to great times which would have put both of them in 1st team GMC had they been in the varsity race.  We had dozens of personal best times in the JV race as well, and some great breakthroughs for many of our runners. 

All in all, it was a good day, even with though the team didn't the league title this year. The Comets gear up this week to fight again next week at Districts back at VOA.

DISTRICT RUNNERUP

This past Saturday the girls from Mason XC earned runnerup at the District Championships at VOA after 10 consecutive seasons winning the event.  

The team ran well, but had a bit of a hiccup with one of the Comets key runners under the weather.  This resulted in a close battle with Turpin who beat the Comets by just 1 point.  The title came down to a photo finish, which Mason lost by five hundredths of a second. 

The girls were led by Maddie Ullom who ran well, and then Ally Kouche.  After Ally, we had a pack of sophomores Ava Stover (8th overall), Aria Hawkins and senior Lily Hallum with junior Faith Min having a tough day at the office, off the back of the pack.   The point margin was close last year as well, but we came out on top, this year, the Comets just came up a bit short.  The girls ran well, and look to be in good shape for next week.  

Mason qualifies for the upcoming Regional Championships this coming Saturday, Oct. 27th at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio. The top 6 teams will qualify to the State Championships in Hebron on Saturday, November, 3rd.

The Comets took an overnight trip to the beautiful confines of Chapel Hill golf course, Mt Vernon Invitational, north of Columbus on Friday.  It was a stellar day for the Green team which took first place firing a 5 under 283.  The 283 sets a NEW MASON HIGH SCHOOL SCORING RECORD.  THEY CARDED 30 BIRDIES!

 Jack Soper was the medalist shooting 68.  Matthew Scheid and Ben Satterthwaite also had great days scoring one under par with 71’s.  Jake Amann was the low man on the White team shooting an impressive 74.  See scores below:

On Monday, Aug. 13th Mason Green shot 302 at Four Bridges Country Club in the Lakota East Invitational. Competing against a field of eighteen of the area’s best teams, Mason finished third. Cameron Madden, Ben Satterthwaite, and Matthew Scheid all carded impressive three over par 75’s to lead Mason. See scores below:

It was a great day for the Comets at the Arrow Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Club in Springfield on Saturday, Aug. 18. Cameron Madden and Jack Soper shot 2 under par 69’s to lead the Green Team to a first place finish with a team score of 285! This score set an all-time tournament record.

All five members of the Green squad finished at 78 or below as the team continued to show its depth.  Mason White took third place (311) thanks to very strong performances by Jake Amman and Tyler Vinson – each carding one over par 72’s. The Comets continued their winning ways on Monday at the Centerville Invitational at Yankee Trace Golf Course. With a team total of 301, the Comets edged Dublin Jerome by one stroke to pick up their fifth invitational victory of the season. Logan Thomas had an excellent day securing a tie for the medalist position and leading the Comets with a nifty one over par 73. SEE SCORES BELOW:

It was a ‘working’ holiday for the Mason Comets as they traveled 8 hours to Southern Pines, NC to play in the Peggy Kirk Bell Cup.  They joined several Ohio teams from the Cincinnati (Lakota East, Moeller) and Columbus areas for a battle on two Donald Ross masterpieces.  These courses presented most in the field with many new challenges that come with southern courses such as pine straw and bermuda greens.

Saturday, Day 1 was played at Mid Pines Golf Club during the afternoon on a real scorcher of a day.  The Comet fought hard but the Bermuda got the best of them as they ended the day trailing Wellington (305) by 11 strokes.

After a rain filled weekend, the Comets were finally able to get back outside on Monday. Competing against seventeen other area teams, Mason secured second place at Miami Valley Golf Club in Dayton, Ohio in the Archbishop Alter Invitational.  Mason scored a very respectable 306, falling just one shot short of Centerville’s 305. Cameron Madden was the low man for Mason scoring a noteworthy 74.

The OHSAA Boys Golf Sectional is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 2nd at the Vineyard GC. Division I Sectionals will qualify four (4) teams and the four (4) individual low scorers not on a qualifying team to the District Tournament at Beavercreek Golf Course, Thursday, October 11, 2018.

Mason battled on Wednesday and Thursday in the Greater Miami Conference Tournament at Walden Ponds in Hamilton, Ohio. Playing through periods of rain, the Comets posted an impressive two day score of 604. In past years,  Mason’s back to back single day scores of 302 would likely have brought home a victory. However, Lakota East was unconscious shooting a stellar two day score of 574 (291, 283) to be crowned 2018 champs. Jack Soper was Mason low man for the tournament carding consecutive 74’s to secure 5th place on an individual basis. Logan Thomas and Ben Satterthwaite also finished in the top ten at 7th and 8th place, respectively.

Next up is the OHSAA District Championship at Beavercreek GC on Thursday, Oct. 11th. District will qualify three (3) teams and the three (3) individual low scorers not on a qualifying team to the State Tournament, October 19 - 20, 2018 at the OSU Scarlet Course. Mason will be seeking to return to State for the 2nd consecutive season as last year they finished 8th overall in Columbus.

BACK TO STATE FOR BOYS GOLF!

Mason Boys Golf is headed back to State! The Comets competed in the Southwest Ohio District tournament at Beavercreek Golf Club outside of Dayton pn Thursday. The goal to advance to next week’s State tournament was accomplished as Mason placed second in the field of sixteen teams with a team score of 315. Lakota East was the winner at 312. St. Xavier was third and will also advance.

The always treacherous course at Beavercreek was no different on Thursday. Extra slick greens and gusting winds challenged the competitors all day long. The Comets were up to the task and were led by senior Logan Thomas who posted a tournament top ten result of 77. The duo of senior Cameron Madden and junior Matthew Scheid both shot rounds of 79. Junior Ben Satterthwaite shot a round of 80 and senior Jack Soper entered the clubhouse with an 82. See scores below:

With both Lakota East and Mason's boys teams advancing to state it gives both schools a pair of state-qualifying golf programs as their girls teams both advanced to state on Tuesday evening.

The State Tournament will be played at the Scarlet Course at Ohio State University on October 19th and 20th. Mason also made state appearances in 2017 (8th place) and 2012 (10th place).

The Mason Boys golf team competed well at the OHSAA State Championships on Friday and Saturday. The Comets finished 4th overall. Dublin Jerome was the overall winner, posting a team score of 625. GMC rival Lakota East and St. Xavier tied for 2nd overall.

Day #1 of the OHSAA D1 State Championship

Under very difficult conditions on Friday, MASON Boys limped in with a 5 over par to take a 3rd place position (St. X tied, but our 5th score broke tie). After Friday's round, Mason was in the final pairing just 7 strokes out of 1st and 2 strokes out of second.

Day #2

The boys were on the scoreboard as runners up after hanging on all day Saturday in very windy conditions but it was short lived. Unfortunately, a scoring error forced a DQ of one of the Mason players dropping them out of the hardware and a State Runner-up title.

Mason finished with a team total of 655 strokes. Junior Matt Scheid led the Comets with a two-day total of 158 strokes for a 11th place finish overall. Other scoring Comets included Jack Soper (T18, 162), Cameron Madden (T33, 168) and Ben Satterthwaite (T38, 170).

The MASON Comet golf program has come a LONG WAY and has proven we can produce successful results in any field.

The Mason boys varsity program got off to a great start last Saturday Aug. 18th giving their new head coach Mike Combs his first Comet coaching victory with a 2-0 over Springboro. 

A 1st half goal was scored by junior forward Ben Damge.  The second goal was scored in the 2nd half by junior midfielder Michael Valcarcel.  In goal to record the shutout was senior goal keeper Collin Hawkins.  Collin had 5 saves in the match.  

Next game is Thursday August 23rd against Moeller at UC (Gettler Stadium) 7pm.

Last night the Mason boys varsity soccer team lost 2-1 to Moeller.  Josh Iroh scored the only goal for the Comets in the 1st half to tie the match up just before half time. 

Moeller scored the game winner with 10 minutes remaining to play in the 2nd half.  Goal keeper Ty Kirssin collected 5 saves during the match.  

NEXT UP MASON WILL HOST CENTERVILLE ON SATURDAY, SEPT. 1ST.

Mason boys soccer lost a tough home match to Centerville 1-0 on a stormy Saturday afternoon. Coming into the match, Mason was 1-1-0 and Centerville was 4-0-1.  

In the first half a Centerville forward shot the ball and it deflected off of a Mason player and ended up going in the opposite corner of the goal for the only scoring on the evening. 

The Comets now turn their attention and focus towards the GMC as the Comets play a home match and their first GMC match next Thursday September 6th at 7pm against Oak Hills.  

The Mason boys varsity squad won their opening GMC match 5-0 over Oak Hills on Thursday night. Leading the way for Mason wasNick Krueger who scored two goals and Ben Damge who collected 3 assists.  Ty Kirrsin recorded the shutout as the Comets win their opening GMC match.

Next up Mason boys will host Olentangy Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 8th.

Mason boys soccer game at home with Olentangy Libery was postponed. Possible makeup dates are being discussed.

Next up Mason boys soccer gets back to GMC play with a big home match versus Lakota West on Thursday, Sept. 13th.

The boys soccer team suffered a disappointing loss at the hands of Lakota West on Thursday, by a final score of 3-2. Both teams battled to a scoreless result in the first half. West came out with three quick goals at the start of the 2nd half that included conversion of a PK. The Comets got on the board with two goals with less than 10 minutes remaining. A final attempt to tie the score on a direct kick in front of the goal was stopped by the Firebird keeper.

The Boys Soccer team lost at Pickerington North on Saturday by a score of 2-0. Once again it was 0-0 at the half, followed by two sloppy second half goals by PN in the last 40 minutes.

Mason will look to regroup when they play at Lakota East on Tuesday, Sept. 18th.

The Mason boys soccer team earned a 2-0 shutoout at Lakota East on Tuesday. The teams were knotted up 0-0 at the half. Mason's first goal early in the 2nd half was scored by Josh Iroh assisted by Ben Damge. The Comets second goal was scored by Ben Damge assisted by Colby Kramer. Collin Hawkins who recorded the shutout with 2 saves.

Next up Mason will host #2 St. Xavier this Saturday at 3:00 pm.

Mason battled the #2 ranked St. Xavier Bombers at home this past Saturday. The two teams put on a defensive battle with neither team finding the back of the net and the contest ending in a 0-0 tie.

Mason (3-4-1, 2-1 GMC) will host Hamilton on Tuesday.

Mason boys varsity won Tuesday night over GMC opponent Hamilton 9-1.  Ben Damge was "Man of the Match" by scoring 4 goals and assisting on another goal.  Other goals were scored by Koki Yoshihara (2), Josh Iroh (2), and Bola Adesanya.

Next match is this Thursday as the Comets play at Sycamore at 7pm.  

The Mason boys soccer team won Saturday night, 2-1 over Loveland.  Goals were scored in the first half by Carter Womack and Ben Damge.  Goal keeper Collin Hawkins recorded 5 saves.  Collin made several great saves that kept Loveland trailing in the match.  Collin Hawkins was named "Man of the Match". 

Next match for Mason is next Tuesday at Princeton.  

Mason boys soccer won 5-0 at Princeton on Tuesday night.  Goals were scored by Ben Damge (2), Nick Krueger (2), and Bola Adesanya. The shutout was recorded by Ty Kirrsin who collected 3 saves. The "Man of the Match" was Nick Krueger.  

Next up for Mason (6-5-1, 5-1) is "Senior Night" this coming Thursday October 4th against Colerain 7pm. Mason will play Olentangy Liberty this Saturday in a makeup contest that begins with JV at 11:00 and Varsity at 1:00 pm.

The Mason boys soccer program won a tight 2-1 contest over Colerain on Thursday night. The Comets pounded the net but struggled to get one past the Colerain keeper. The Cardinals jumped out to 1-0 lead on a PK kick.

Mason got things going in the 2nd half when goals were scored by Ben Damge and Josh Iroh. The "Man of the Match" was Ben Damge as he scored the first goal and then assisted on the second.

Next match is a makeup this Saturday 1pm at Mason against Olentangy Liberty from Columbus.  

Mason boys soccer fell to Olentangy Liberty 3-0 in a non-conference makeup game from earlier in the season. The Comets could not break thru a tough OL defense on a hot and muggy afternoon.

Mason (8-4-1, 6-1 GMC) will finish out the the 2018 regular sesaon on the road with games at Middletown on Tuesday and Fairfield on Thursday. The Comets will need to win out and hope for some help to capture the 2018 GMC title. West leads the league with a 6-0-1 record. Lakota East is close behind with a 5-1-1 league mark.

Mason snagged the #5 seed in the upcoming Sectional tourney. The drew a bye in the first round and will HOST the winner of the Western Brown (12-0-1)/West Clermont (4-8-2) contest on Thursday, Oct. 18th, 7:00 pm.

2018 GMC CHAMPIONS!

For the seventh time since Mason entered the GMC in 2007, the Comet Boys Soccer team has earned another leage title. In a "must win" contest Thursday night versus the defending GMC champs, the Fairfield Indians, the Comets won a tough 3-2 battle on the road to claim the 2018 GMC title. Lakota West's win Thursday at Lakota East, made it imperative that Mason earn a win in their final game of the season. East, West and Mason all had GMC title scenarios that could have played out.

Fairfield came into the contest with nothing more to gain than being a spoiler. The game was physical and close as most contests have been in the past between the two schools. With the score knotted 2-2 in the 2nd half, Mason senior Nick Krueger got the game winner to send the Comets home happy. Josh Iroh and Ben Damge also scored goals in the game for Mason.

The Comets finish the regular season with a conference mark of 8-1 and 10-4-2 overall. Mason has now earned GMC boys soccer titles in the following years: 2018, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2009 and 2007.

Mason Boys Soccer opened post season play on Thursday night with a 2-0 win over Western Brown. The Comets dominated the match scoring two goals in the 1st half for all they needed to advance.

Mason will play a familar GMC opponent in Monday, Oct. 22nd's Sectional Final. The Comets will meet Oak Hills who knocked off Talawanda to advance. Game time at Lakota West is 7:00 pm. The winner will play either #1 seed Moeller or Colerain in the District Championship on Thursday, Oct. 25th location TBA.

Mason boys soccer advances in the postseason on Monday with a 2-0 shutout of Oak Hills. The Comets are Sectional Champs! No other details available.

Mason will play for a District Title this Thursday night at Lakota East against #1 seed Moeller, 7:00 pm. The Comets will be seeking the programs 8th overall SW District Title. The winner will advance to the Regional Semi-Finals at Lebanon JR. High on Wednesday, Oct. 31st, 7:00 pm against the winner of the Beavercreek/Anderson contest.

The Mason boys soccer season ended in the District Championship on Thursday night with a 2-0 loss to #1 seed Moeller at Lakota East. The Comets went down 2-0 in the first half but dominated the last 40 minutes.

The Comets began a blitzkrieg of bullets at the Moeller keeper and at one point had a shots on goal advantage of 11-3, though they trailed 2-0. The drill continued the rest of the way as Mason peppered the box with shots but the Crusader keeper continued swatting them away or rolling them up.

The two teams initially met a little over two months ago, with Moeller winning on Aug. 23, 2-1. The Comets began the season 2-4, then went 10-1-1 coming into the game with the Crusaders. 

Mason finishes the year with a respectful 12-6-1 record, going 8-1 in the league as the 2018 GMC Champions under first-year head coach Mike Combs.

The opening match for the 2018 Mason Comets was played on Saint Ursula's Buenger Field at Schottzie Stadium, ending in a 0-0 result.  The preseason #2 Comets came ready to play and 30 seconds into the match Allison Winterhalter slid an excellent ball to Elise Haller for the first threat of the half; setting the tone.  Ursula was clearly keeping their midfield behind the ball as the Comets dominated the first 18 minutes of the match.  The Comets midfield was doing an excellent job of finding each other thru very tight spaces, the Comets outside defenders were pushing forward to aid in the attack and the Comets did an excellent job using their center-backs Catherine Berry and Natalie Adkins to maintain possession.  Bethany Moser's booming drop kicks were nearly entering the preseason #4 Bulldogs 18 yard box and Elise Haller ran onto one of those kicks creating a serious threat at the 4 minute mark. 

In an attempt to slowdown Mason's excellent ball movement Ursula was called for several trips, one at 13th minute form the 30 yard mark that Tori Bonno aptly put on frame for Madison Boosveld's first save of the game.  Two minutes later Elise Haller created a little space for herself and ripped a shot from the 18 that Boosveld was able to punch away for a second save and the Comets' first corner.  The lone bright spot for the Bulldogs in the first 18 minutes came when a Bulldog striker was able to dispossess the ball from a Comet defender and earn a corner.  Off the corner a Bulldog player released an athletic bicycle kick, thanks to excellent positioning by Moser she was able to smother the shoot at the goal line.  The Comets defense was so dominating that Ursula did not complete their first multi pass sequence on the Comets half until almost 20 minutes into the game.  The Comets outside defenders, Maria Speas and Vanessa Adkins, pushing into the attack, took the next 3 shots for the Comets as the run of play evened out for the next 10 minutes.  The Comets regained control for the last 12 minutes of the half and if not for 2 calls that could have gone the Comets way on an offside and a trip in the box the Comets could have likely broken the stalemate.  The first half ended 0-0 with the Comets out shooting the Bulldogs 7 to 3, both teams had 1 corner and 4 fouls in the first half. 

Saturday's contest at MND was cancelled due to weather related issues. No Makeup date has been decided.

Girls Soccer at Oak Hills on Thursday night was postponed due to weather. Makeup TBA.

For the second consecutive match, Mason girls soccer was cancelled. Weather issues up north would not allow their game at Pickerington North to be played on Saturday. No makeup is scheduled at this time.

The Comets women’s soccer team came out fast and fighting under the lights on the pitch at Hamilton High School Tuesday night, dominating possession with 18 total shots, 6 on goal, to Big Blue's 4 shots on goal. Bethany Moser had 4 saves for the shutout.

The Comets jumped into an attack just five minutes in, when a pass up the middle gave Allison Winterhalter the angle to drop it through the Harrison back line to a charging Elise Haller. Haller raced toward goal and took a shot that was stopped.  Minutes later, a cross gave Winterhalter the shot. That was a familiar theme in the first half, with a stalwart Comets defense, including Vanessa Atkins, Natalie Atkins, Catherine Berry, Meghan Curran and Mackenzie Berryman, not giving the Wildcats offense much opportunity to work and the middle of Tori Bonno and Olivia Polnow distributing up top over and over.

Scoring opened nearly 15 minutes in, when a corner by Tori Bonno hit the keeper’s hands and bounced in the goal. Passes by Bonno and Polnow gave shooting opportunities to Haller, Janya Searles, Kaitlyn Heckler, and Berry. Thirty two minutes in, Searles hit a pass to a speedy Jenna Burns on the right wing, and she worked it up to the post and popped it past the keeper.  The 2-0 score stood at halftime.

Hamilton came out fast in the second half, setting up a few opportunities in the opening minutes.  Lightening delayed and ultimately ended the game 10 minutes into the second  half securing the Comets 2-0 victory.  

The # 3 ranked Comets, now 7-0-2 (4-0-0 GMC), are hosting the # 6 ranked Sycamore Aviators who come in with a record of 7-2-1 (3-0-1 GMC) Thursday evening at 7 PM.  This is a critical GMC conference match-up that will also have implications on the tournament seeding, let's pack the stands to support our Comets!!  

Mason prevailed last night with a close 1-0 win at Colerain.

GMC CHAMPS

The Mason Girls Soccer team rolled Over Middletown 8-0, Tuesday on Senior Night. It was a special night all the way around. Fairfield tied with Hamilton helping the Comets secure the 2018 GMC Championship! The outcome of Masn's final home game with FF this Thursday will be a non-factor as far as league standings since the Indians arleady have two ties on the season and Mason's record is unblemished in the GMC. This is Mason Girls Soccer first GMC title since 2014 and 7th overall since entering the GMC in 2007 (6 outright and 1 co-champ).

On the first chilly evening in the fall of 2018, the Comets stayed hot. The 8-0-0 Comets expected to be in a battle as they looked to keep their perfect GMC record intact against the second place Fairfield Indians who came in 6-0-2. Indeed they were able to do just that, with a close 1-0 win over the defending GMC Champs.

Mason Girls Tennis continued their complete GMC domination with a sweep of all events at the 2018 GMC Championships that concluded on Saturday at the Mason courts. The title is the Comet tennis programs 4th consecutive and 6th overall. Junior Ananya Aggar was named the GMC Girls Tennie Player of the Year. Second seeded, Emma Kruse won 6-1, 6-0 over Suddendorf of St. Ursula.  She then defeated Hudgins of Winton Woods 6-0, 6-0.  Kruse will face Webber of Turpin on Friday at 4:00 PM at Mason.

Freshman, Anna Tonkal defeated Marsh of West Clermont 6-0, 6-0 and Lewis of Western Brown 6-0, 6-0.  She then defeated Johnson of Ursuline 6-2, 6-1. Tonkal will play Long of Walnut Hills on Friday at 4:00 PM at the Mason courts.

Junior, Megan Li beat Peskin of Colerain 6-0, 6-0 and then she beat Kronenberger of Ursuline 6-1, 6-0.  Li finished the day with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Covington of Walnut Hills.  Li will play Allen of Turpin Friday at 4:00 PM at the Mason courts.

Both Comet doubles teams also advanced.

Top-seeded Ananya Aggarwal and Sanjana Reddy beat Smith and Dickman of Talawanda 6-0, 6-0 and then they dispatched the Anderson team of DesJardins and Stump by the same score.  Aggarwal and Reddy will play the 4th seeded team of Kirby and Gockerman from St. Ursula on Saturday morning at 9:00 AM at the Mason Courts.

The 3rd seeded team of Raina Chada and Annie Kruse beat Ritzie and Betewelign from Colerain 6-0 6-0 and the Anderson team of Rile and Stith 6-0, 6-0.  They finished the day with a win over Bengel and Rolfes of Seton 6-0, 6-0.  They resume play against the Ursuline team of Dhaliwal and Estes at 9:00 AM on Saturday at the Mason courts.

Qualifiers from each Sectional to District will be four singles and four doubles in Division I. The OHSAA District Championships is set for Thursday and Saturday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Qualifiers from District to State Meet will be four (4) singles and four (4) doubles.

The SW District Championships will resume on Saturday after day one action completed on Thursday at the Mason Lindner Tennis Complex.

Mason shined in the first day of competition and will send a contingent of their team to the OHSAA State Individual Championships next weekend. Qualifying for Mason are:

The Mason Girls Tennis team is in the OTCA District Finals on Monday, Oct. 15th vs. Ursuline. The winner will advance to the OTCA FINAL FOUR State Team Championships in Reynoldsburg on Sunday, Oct. 21st. The Comets are currently ranked # in the city and latest state polls.

It was another busy, busy weeked for Mason Girls Tennis. Saturday the finals of the District Championships were played back at the LIndner Family Tennis Center. Mason placed first and second in the Districts in doubles and second in singles.  Five Comets move on to the state tournament.

Juniors Ananya Aggarwal and Sanjana Reddy defeated Ursuline’s Nina Dhaliwal and Bridget Estes 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the semifinals.  They then defeated teammates Raina Chada and Annie Kruse 6-2, 6-0 in the finals.  Kruse and Chada had defeated St. Ursula’s Gockerman and Kirby 7-5, 6-4 to reach the finals.

This is the second straight year that Reddy and Aggarwal have qualified for the state tournament.  Reddy qualified last year with doubles partner, Nicole Reid.  Aggarwal had a deep run in singles, losing in the semifinals and finishing 4th in the state.  This is the first year that Annie Kruse and Raina Chada have qualified for states.  They were one match short last year, losing a close match in the district qualifying round.

Junior co-captain,  Emma Kruse will also make her first appearance at state.  Emma lost in the District Singles Final to Turpin’s Caitlyn Fisher in a match that was much closer than the final score indicated.  Kruse beat Bays of Beavercreek in the semifinals 6-3, 6-3 to earn a spot in the final.

The Mason Girls Tennis team defeated Ursuline 3-0 on Monday to advance them to the OTCA State Final Four! The same two teams had battled last year with the same result...a Mason victory! The Comet girls tennis powerhouse will now look to defend their State Team title in Reynoldsburg, Ohio on Sunday, Oct. 21st. Below is a summary of the scores:

Mason Double Teams Place 3rd and 4th At State

Friday, Oct. 19th

The Comets had two doubles teams reach the state semifinals last Friday.  The team of junior, Ananya Aggarwal and fellow junior, Sanjana Reddy defeated Canfield’s Cianciola and Economus in the first round 6-2, 6-1.  In the quarterfinals, Aggarwal and Reddy beat Holman and Shi of Upper Arlington 6-3, 6-3 to move into the semis. 

Reddy and Aggarwal will square off against Kassaie and Hsu of Mayfield in Saturday’s semifinal to be played at 9:00 AM at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

Sophomores, Annie Kruse and Raina Chada outlasted Yang and Ratner of Solon, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their first match.  Chada and Kruse  then beat Carter and Onest from Perrysburg 6-3, 6-2 and advanced to the semifinals.  Chada and Kruse will face the defending champions, Atway and Schoenly from Olentangy Liberty, Saturday at 9:00 AM at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Junior Emma fell in three long sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4,  to Rondini of Magnificat in her first round match.

Saturday, Oct. 20th

Less than 10 minutes from their home courts, the Mason girls tennis team traveled to the Lindner Tennis Center in the hopes of seeing their doubles teams play each other.

The Lady Comets got their wish, but not in the fashion they'd hoped for as both teams fell in the semifinals, setting up their literal "kiss your sister" consolation match.

Mason's top doubles entry of Ananya Aggarwal/Sanjana Reddy made a monstrous comeback in their semifinal with Mayfield's Hannah Kassaie/Caitlyn Hsu. After losing the first set 6-3, then getting down 4-0 in the second, Mason rallied to force a tiebreaker, but eventually fell short and lost the match 6-3, 7-6.

"We had some chances," Mason coach Mike Reid said. "We just couldn't get a lead. They were kind of tentative. It's a momentum game. We didn't play quite as well as we'd like to, but it was still a great match."

Sophomores Raina Chada/Annie Kruse faced the defending champions of Olentangy Liberty, Maddie Atway and Dani Schoenly. Liberty was as billed, winning 6-0, 6-2, eventually taking the state title.

"I think we could have played better, but I think a lot of it was our kids thinking they were a lot better than them," Reid said of the loss to Liberty.

The team of Aggarwal/Reddy prevailed for third place over Chada/Kruse, 6-1, 7-5.

"It was the three-four (match) but we both had some really tough first rounds," Reddy said. "Two teams from the same team getting third and fourth, I think it's pretty good. We're really looking forward to team state tomorrow."

Aggarwal, who finished fourth in singles last year and now third in doubles, will rotate back to first singles for Mason on Sunday at the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament.

MASON REPEATS! BACK-TO-BACK OTCA STATE CHAMPS!

The Comets made the trip to Reynoldsburg on Sunday to compete in the OTCA for the fourth consecutive year.  

The number one ranked Comets squared off against Perrysburg in the semifinal match.  Although it was only 39 degrees at match time, Mason heated up quickly, picked up victories at two doubles, first with Sarah Pickens and Priya Bandaru winning 6-0, 6-0.   Next Ananya Aggarwal also blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0.  

Anna Tonkal was leading 7-6, 1-0 at #3 singles and Annie Kruse and Raina Chada were leading 6-2, 4-3.  But it was Sanjana Reddy who sealed the match with 6-3, 6-1 win at #2 singles. 

Next up for the Comets was familiar foe, Rocky River Magnificat.  Mason lost to Magnificat in the OTCA Final in 2016.  Last year the Green and White got revenge and earned a 3-0 victory over the Mags. Beating Magnificat this year looked to be a tall order.  Their number one player, Anna Roggenburk (Xavier commit), had just won the OHSAA singles championship the day before.  And their number two player, Olivia Rondini, had just placed third in the state tournament. Their third singles player, Audrey Smitek, is a highly ranked freshman who is also one of the best players in the state. 

The Comet duo of Ananya Aggarwal and Sanjana Reddy had placed third in the OHSAA doubles tournament and teammates, Raina Chada and Annie Kruse had placed fourth. 

For the Magnificat match, however it was time for the Comets to get back to their normal singles positions, Aggarwal at number one and Reddy at number two. Coach Reid opted to split up Chada and Kruse and put Annie at three singles anticipating a possible deciding match between Kruse and Mag’s highly regarded freshman, Audrey Smitek.  Rounding out the Comets’ line-up were Raina Chada and Emma Kruse at one doubles and the all-junior team of Kelly Reid and Megan Li at two dubs. 

When the line-ups were exchanged, however, the anticipated match-up at three singles didn’t happen. Magnificat decided to move Smitek to two doubles, strengthening that position and hoping to win the match by winning one and two singles and number two doubles. 

“The kids were a little rattled when they saw Magnificat’s line-up,” said Mason Head Coach Mike Reid.  "But we got them settled down and when the match started, they were all ready to play. Especially, Kelly and Megan.  They knew that Magnificat’s line-up change would probably mean that the match would come down to their match at two doubles.  But they just looked at me and said they they were ready for the challenge. “

Annie Kruse got the first point winning at three singles. And then at two doubles, Reid and Megan really put the pressure on the Mags by winning the first set. Aggarwal stunned Roggenburk by winning the first set and Emma Kruse and Chada also won the first set. 

Things were looking good for the Comets when Sanjana Reddy got the first set off her nemesis, Rondini.

“I’d never beaten her before, but we had a good game plan this time," said Reddy.  "It was up to me to execute.”

With Chada and and Emma winning at one doubles, the Comets were looking for the clinching point.  Roggenburk had taken the second set from Aggarwal.  But Reid and Li held a 4-3 lead in the second and they were looking to end it. But it was Reddy, playing confident, inspired tennis who clinched the match when Rondini netted at backhand. 

The Comets rose to the occasion, winning the state championship without losing a match in the final four. For the 2nd time in as many years, the Mason Girls Tennis Team has captured a State Championship!
