8/24 | Moeller Inv. | 1st place | The Mason Cross Country Comets opened their 2018 campaign at the Moeller Invitational hosted just down the road at Christ's Church at Mason last Friday night. The Comets suffered a narrow loss to rival St. Xavier 35-38 losing in the final half mile. The Comets were paced by a stellar performance of Junior Johan Meyer who finished just two seconds away from winning in third place. Seniors Jagger Vetter and Isaiah Kelly ran solid races finishing 4th and 6th respectivley. Sophomore Austin Cooper and Senior Brogan Doran rounded out the scoring for the Comets. Junior Micah Champagne held down the number six man while Freshman sensations Alex DeRoussel and Aiden Amshoff were the next two runners for Mason. The Running Comets will head to the Dewine farm near Cedarville for a dual with the Lancaster Gales next Saturday. It should prove to be a exciting top ten match up. |
|
9/1 | Worthington/Devine Invite @ Cedarville (boys only) | 1st | The Mason Boys Cross Country team ventured to the idyllic farm of former senator and current Ohio attorney general Mike DeWine for their third Dual at the DeWine's. 9/8 | Mason Invite | 1st | The Mason Boys Cross Country team braved stiff competition, tropical storm Gordon, muddy conditions and a swollen creek to sweep all three races (Varsity, JV 9-10, JV 11-12) at the 44th Mason Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. An army of volunteers prepared the Corwin-Nixon / Pine Hill course well during the week and maintained the course during the 13 races throughout the day. A special thank you goes to all of them and the City of Mason Parks Department.
The Mason varsity squeezed out a narrow victory over defending champion and #1 in Kentucky Louisville Trinity having to go to the 6th man tie breaker for the win. Senior Isaiah Kelly was Mason's top runner followed very closely by Junior Johan Meyer and Senior Jagger Vetter. Junior Micah Champagne and Sophomore Austin Cooper rounded out the traditional 5-man scoring. But the tie was broken by the performance of Senior Brogan Doran who was followed closely by freshman Alex DeRoussel.

Racing a field of over 56 teams and over 400 runners, the Comets established their position early and never looked back. By the 1000 meter mark, a pack of six Comets was firmly entrenched in about 15th-20th place. The pack moved up some during the race and clearly was the class of the field. As the fifth Comet finished, the announcer said "Here comes Mason's pack, give them the victory!". The Green and White was led by Junior Johan Meyer. Within 12 seconds his fellow-scorers had all finished. In order: Senior Isaiah Kelly, Freshman Alex Deroussel, Junior Micah Champagne, and Senior Brogan Doran. 8/18 | OHSAA Preview | The Girls CC Team opened the 2018 season at the OHSAA Preview event for the top 20 teams in Ohio at National Trail Raceway. The ladies did pretty well. The girls had a nice group with newcomer Maddie Ullom up front and Faith Min / Ally Kouche not far behind. Ava Stover had a good day, as did Lily Hallum and Kiera Doran. The girls placed 4th in a strong field and had some promising signs for the future. Catie Courtney also WON the girls open race today, in a photo finish. Great job!!! Next up the team competes at the Moeller Invite on Aug. 24th. |
||
8/24 | Moeller Inv. | They young ladies of the Mason cross-country team had their first local meet with the entire team at the Moeller Primetime Invitational on Friday night and earned a big win!
In the JV race the girls nearly swept the field with a low score of 17 and lots of great runs led by Nathalie Schickendance.
In the varsity race the team was once again led by Maddie Ullom as she placed second overall.
After Maddie, Mason had a tremendous pack with six girls all within a few seconds of each other. The pack consisted of Faith Min, Ally Kouche, Brooke Harvey, Kierra Doran, Lily Hallum and Ava Stover.
The girls took the team title overall and beat Ursuline, who are the defending state runner-ups. It was very encouraging and we are looking forward to continue to improve. The girls are off this coming weekend as they prepare for the annual Mason Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8th at Pine Hill Park. |

We are making the final preparations for the 44th annual Mason Invite next Saturday, and we are excited for another great year. The team list is shaping up well, and the course should be in great shape come Saturday. I have attached a course map, the list of teams coming (so far) and the schedule. Remember, for the D2/D3 teams we will allow unlimited entries into the varsity D2/D3 race to help them out with their timelines and the size of the races. D1 is still run 10, score 5. Best of luck this season, and be advised that there is a lot going on at Mason that day so parking can be tough. Plan ahead. Buckeye Running Company will be there again in force, and will have coaches swag and T-shirts for top finishers.

Bring your old shoes to the Mason Cross Country Invitational! Fill the Buckeye Running Company Shoe Bus with old shoes – any kind, any condition for Missions in Motion. Most of the shoes will end up in Haiti for people who, in most cases, have never had a pair shoes. Just tie or buckle them together: old running shoes, heels, sandals, whatever. The bus will be near the starting line. Let’s FILL THE BUS! |

9/8 | Mason Invite | 1st | The Mason Girl's Cross Country team had a good outing at the 44th running of the Mason Invitational. The course was wet and soft in the morning, but the girls still ran solid times and put on a good show for the home crowd. The Comets raced to a 1st place finish with a team score of 69 points! Mason was led once again by Maddie Ullom who placed in the top 5 for the 3rd time this season. Ava Stover stepped up big and ran well for the Comets in the 2 spot. Faith Min continues to run well as does Ally Kouche, both of whom placed in the top 20 in a tough field. Overall the team looked solid against Turpin and Loveland and Ursuline. As the day went on the course fell apart and the girls in the open races had to deal with much tougher weather and a horrible footing. It was a good day for the Comets and many girls are taking nice steps forward as we progress toward the post season. Next up for the JV Comets is the Cedarville CC Invite on Saturday, Sept. 15th. The varsity gets back into racing at the prestigious and tough Culver Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22nd. |
|
9/15 | Cedarville CC Invite | 1st | Last Saturday at the Cedarville Invitational the girls did well considering the heat and humidity. With a race temp of over 80 degrees, and zero shade, they performed as well as could be expected. The team consisted of a split squad of girls as we sat out 5 of our top runners. With this partial team of varsity athletes we were still able to muster a win and did very well all things considered. T he team was led by Maddie Ullom. She took 2nd overall and continued to look very strong. After Maddie was newcomer Ellie Bevan. She ran in the #2 spot and did great, placing 9th overall! Megan Miller returned to form and placed 3rd for the Comets. Erica Fennimore and Manuela Capiello rounded out our scorers and did quite well in their role as varsity for the day. We got a great production out of many of our varsity B girls and they were able to secure the win for the Comets over Kings and Sycamore. It was a good day, and the girls are heading in the right direction. Next up Mason Girls compete at the prestigious Culver Invite on Saturday, Sept. 22nd. |
|
9/22 | Centerville Saturday Nights Invite | 8th | At the Centerville Nights Invite on Friday, our girls CC "Varsity" for the day did well, placing 8th in the varsity race with Ashley Robey and Faith Tang leading the way. The Centerville meet was a PR festival with 80% of the girls having PRs and many having season bests. It was fast, flat and perfect conditions and the girls seized the day.
9/22 | Culver Invite | At the annual Culver Invite this past Saturday, Mason girls had their best race in a few years with 12 girls under 20:00 minutes and many PRs / season bests. The team took the overall title by just 3 points in our first win at Culver in 9 attempts. Maddie Ullom was the top finisher with a 2nd place overall run in this strong field. Then we had a great pack of 4 in a row; Lily Hallum, Ellie Bevan, Faith Min and Erica Fennimore. The pack running was a thing of beauty, 4 girls within 2 seconds! Brooke Harvey and Ava Stover finished out our top 7. We had great production out of our JV girls too with a perfect score in the JV race, and 2 girls under 20:00 in that race as well. (Aria Hawkins and Manuela Capiello) Great job! |
||
9/29 | Louisville Classic | Saturday was a great day for the Comet Girls CC team at the Louisville Classic as the top 7 varsity girls rolled the field with just 41 points and finished first overall. The team was led by Maddie Ullom who ran to a 3rd place overall finish in this large multi-state field. Maddie was followed by Brooke Harvey who had a great day! After Brooke was Aria Hawkins who surprised with a personal best time, and then Faith Min and Lily Hallum were close behind. The girls ran in a tight pack for 2K then split up to crush the field on a warm and humid day on the once NCAA championship course. The team is really deep this year and is improving nicely. We are very excited about GMCs and are hopeful for a good post season. The Girls will be off next week as they prepare for the GMC Championships on Saturday, October 13th at VOA.

||
9/29 | Fairmont Firebird Invite | At Fairmont we took 2nd in the VARSITY race with our #15-25 girls that ran like a top 7 crew!! Great job!! Natalie Nye led the charge with a season PR and was joined by Jenna Harris, Nathalie Schickendantz, Macie Radcliffe and Alyssa Dilley to score just 92 points in a varsity race with 20 teams! Wow!! Such a great job!! They were even winning at the 2 mile!! Way to represent!!
10/13 | GMC @ VOA | 2nd | At the GMC Championships this past Saturday at Voice of America Park, the team battle was quite fierce between Lakota East and Mason! The race started off fast with the top 7 coming through the mile hot, around 5:35-5:45, then they ran as a pack for a bit but split up later on. Maddie Ullom took the lead midway through the race, and battled with two East girls. Next, Faith Min broke away from the pack and ran strong to a 4th place finish. After Faith was a pack of Lily Hallum, Ally Kouche, Aria Hawkins and Ava Stover who all finished within a few seconds of each other. All of these girls, including Brooke Harvey finished in the top 14 places, which gives them the rank of first team all-league. Great job! In the final team scoring, the team scored just 32 points, but sadly East bested the Comets by 2 on this day with a final tally of just 30 points. Mason girl ran great with 5 out of 7 personal best times and a great team effort. In the JV race, Erica Fennimore and Ellie Bevan led from the gun and ran to great times which would have put both of them in 1st team GMC had they been in the varsity race. We had dozens of personal best times in the JV race as well, and some great breakthroughs for many of our runners. All in all, it was a good day, even with though the team didn't the league title this year. The Comets gear up this week to fight again next week at Districts back at VOA. |
|
10/20 | District @ VOA | 2ND | DISTRICT RUNNERUP This past Saturday the girls from Mason XC earned runnerup at the District Championships at VOA after 10 consecutive seasons winning the event. The team ran well, but had a bit of a hiccup with one of the Comets key runners under the weather. This resulted in a close battle with Turpin who beat the Comets by just 1 point. The title came down to a photo finish, which Mason lost by five hundredths of a second. The girls were led by Maddie Ullom who ran well, and then Ally Kouche. After Ally, we had a pack of sophomores Ava Stover (8th overall), Aria Hawkins and senior Lily Hallum with junior Faith Min having a tough day at the office, off the back of the pack. The point margin was close last year as well, but we came out on top, this year, the Comets just came up a bit short. The girls ran well, and look to be in good shape for next week. Mason qualifies for the upcoming Regional Championships this coming Saturday, Oct. 27th at Hobart Arena in Troy, Ohio. The top 6 teams will qualify to the State Championships in Hebron on Saturday, November, 3rd. |

After Friday's round, Mason was in the final pairing just 7 strokes out of 1st and 2 strokes out of second. Day #2 The boys were on the scoreboard as runners up after hanging on all day Saturday in very windy conditions but it was short lived. Unfortunately, a scoring error forced a DQ of one of the Mason players dropping them out of the hardware and a State Runner-up title. Mason finished with a team total of 655 strokes. Junior Matt Scheid led the Comets with a two-day total of 158 strokes for a 11th place finish overall. Fairfield came into the contest with nothing more to gain than being a spoiler. The game was physical and close as most contests have been in the past between the two schools. With the score knotted 2-2 in the 2nd half, Mason senior Nick Krueger got the game winner to send the Comets home happy. Josh Iroh and Ben Damge also scored goals in the game for Mason. The drill continued the rest of the way as Mason peppered the box with shots but the Crusader keeper continued swatting them away or rolling them up. The two teams initially met a little over two months ago, with Moeller winning on Aug. 23, 2-1. The Comets began the season 2-4, then went 10-1-1 coming into the game with the Crusaders. 8/18 | @ St. Ursula | tie | 0-0 | 0-0-1 | 0-0 | The opening match for the 2018 Mason Comets was played on Saint Ursula's Buenger Field at Schottzie Stadium, ending in a 0-0 result. The preseason #2 Comets came ready to play and 30 seconds into the match Allison Winterhalter slid an excellent ball to Elise Haller for the first threat of the half; setting the tone. Ursula was clearly keeping their midfield behind the ball as the Comets dominated the first 18 minutes of the match. The Comets midfield was doing an excellent job of finding each other thru very tight spaces, the Comets outside defenders were pushing forward to aid in the attack and the Comets did an excellent job using their center-backs Catherine Berry and Natalie Adkins to maintain possession. Bethany Moser's booming drop kicks were nearly entering the preseason #4 Bulldogs 18 yard box and Elise Haller ran onto one of those kicks creating a serious threat at the 4 minute mark. In an attempt to slowdown Mason's excellent ball movement Ursula was called for several trips, one at 13th minute form the 30 yard mark that Tori Bonno aptly put on frame for Madison Boosveld's first save of the game. Two minutes later Elise Haller created a little space for herself and ripped a shot from the 18 that Boosveld was able to punch away for a second save and the Comets' first corner. The lone bright spot for the Bulldogs in the first 18 minutes came when a Bulldog striker was able to dispossess the ball from a Comet defender and earn a corner. Off the corner a Bulldog player released an athletic bicycle kick, thanks to excellent positioning by Moser she was able to smother the shoot at the goal line. The Comets defense was so dominating that Ursula did not complete their first multi pass sequence on the Comets half until almost 20 minutes into the game. The Comets outside defenders, Maria Speas and Vanessa Adkins, pushing into the attack, took the next 3 shots for the Comets as the run of play evened out for the next 10 minutes. The Comets regained control for the last 12 minutes of the half and if not for 2 calls that could have gone the Comets way on an offside and a trip in the box the Comets could have likely broken the stalemate. The first half ended 0-0 with the Comets out shooting the Bulldogs 7 to 3, both teams had 1 corner and 4 fouls in the first half. The Bulldogs pushed their midfielders into higher pressure in the second half which evened out the run of play and did open up some space for the Comets in the attacking third. Olivia Polnow slid a beautiful ball to a streaking Jenna Burns in the 49th minute which resulted in a good look that ended just wide right. Jayna Searles stole a pass and had a good look at the goal in the 54th minute resulting in another nice save by Boosveld. In the 54th minute the Comets completed a nice 6 pass sequence resulting in a Natalie to Natalie, Lannes to Sears, shot on goal for yet another Boosveld save. In the 74th minute the Comets completed a 7 pass sequence for a Winterhalter to Bonno shot on goal and another Boosveld save. The final Comets' attempt came off a Bonno serve in the 77th minute which Mackenzie Berryman nearly headed in for the winning goal if not for Boosveld's 11th save of the match.
The defense anchored by C. Berry and N. Adkins maintained the Comets' rich history of excellence allowing only 2 shots on goal both saved by Moser for her first clean sheet of the 2018 campaign. For the game that ended 0-0, the Comets out shot the Bulldogs 17 to 7, 11 on frame to 2. In the second half the Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Bulldog's 1 and took 3 corners to the Bulldogs 1. The Comets offense will be looking to start the net shaking in their home opener against Notre Dame Academy on Wednesday night at 7:00. The Panda's will be heading north from Park Hills, Ky with the Northern Ky, #1 preseason ranking a 2-0-1 record and a 20-0 goal advantage. |
8/22 | Notre Dame | won | 2-0 | 1-0-1 | 0-0 | On an unseasonably cool August evening the Comets hosted their home opener against the Pandas of Notre Dame Academy. The Pandas brought with them the Northern Kentucky Girls #1 ranking, a 3-0-1 record, a 23 to 2 goal advantage, and a 2 year winning streak against the Comets.
The Comets controlled much of the run of play throughout the game and the Pandas picked their spots to counter attack, which was very similar to the last 2 years when the Comets ended up on the losing end of a pair of 0-1 results.
The Comets dominated the start of the game keeping the ball in the Pandas end for almost all of the first 10 minutes. The Comets executed quick passing thru the middle and an excellent inside out game to keep the Pandas chasing from sideline to sideline. The Comets continued to maintain the upper hand thru most of the first half and the half ended with the Comets out shooting the Pandas 5 (2 on goal) to 2 (1 on goal) and took 1 corner to 0 corners for the Pandas. The speed of the game was quick and the Comets were called for 3 fouls to zero for the Pandas. Both keepers stopped all the shots on goal and the half ended with no scoring.
The Pandas exploded out of the gate in the second half and were able to put several shots on or around the goal, Mason's Keeper, Julia Schutrump, was up to the task and was able to keep the score knotted at 0-0. The Comets regained their composure and the majority of the possession and brought a strong attack back against the Pandas. In the 65th minute the Comets earned a corner kick which Allison Winterhalter floated in front of the goal and Olivia Polnow finished into the back of the net to initiate the Comets scoring for the 2018 campaign. Ten minutes later a streaking Jenna Burns fought her way thru several Panda defenders to deliver a beautiful cross to the mouth of Notre Dame's goal and Natalie Sears put a bow on the Comets win shaking the net for the second time of the evening. In another fast paced half the Comets out shot the Pandas 11 (5 on goal) to 8 (5 on goal), took 3 corners to 1 and committed 2 fouls to 1. Julia Schutrump had 5 saves in the second half and Schutrump and Bethany Moser combined for the Comets second clean sheet in as many attempts.
The 2018 Comets brand of soccer is entertaining to watch with quick and precise ball movement, strong 1 v 1 skills, stifling defense and excellent team chemistry. Next up, the Comets will travel to the other Notre Dame; Mt. Notre Dame in Reading for a 7:00 game on Saturday evening. The 1-0-1 Comets will put their #3 ranking up against the 2-0-0 Cougars #6 ranking. |
8/25 | @ MND | Saturday's contest at MND was cancelled due to weather related issues. No Makeup date has been decided. Next up: The Mason Girls soccer team (1-0-1) play at Milford on Saturday, Sept. 1st |
||||
9/1 | @ Milford | won | 3-0 | 2-0-1 | 0-0 | On Saturday the Comets traveled to Milford's Charity J. Lucas Soccer Stadium for their annual Labor Day Weekend High Noon Match-up. The grass was high and play was a bit slow putting a higher premium on physical play.
The gritty Comets had no problem stepping up to the challenge. In the third minute Catherine Berry threaded a nice pass to Tori Bonno who laid it into space for Olivia Polnow who sent a nice ball forward to Nicole Onweller. Nicole made a cheeky step around the Eagles keeper and buried her shot into the side net. Milford's only real threat of the game came four minutes later when a Milford attacker intercepted a Comet pass and ripped an upper 90 missile from 18. Bethany Moser was up to the task making a diving one handed slap away for an Eagles corner. Jenna Burns created a great deal of trouble for the right side of the Eagles defense earning a shot on Goal and 2 corners. The Heading Berry's each took a turn putting a head on Allison Winterhalter corners for near misses and Catherine Berry had a strong heading clear on a dangerous Eagles corner. The Comets managed to string together some passes and at times were able to play possession soccer although the Eagles were happy to ugly up the game and rely on their physical play. In the 33rd minute Elise Haller earned a free kick on an Eagles foul along their end line near the left corner. Tori Bonno floated a nice ball to the back post which Mackenzie Berryman nearly finished with a header earning the Comets another corner. Kaitlin Heckler lifted a dangerous corner just outside the 6 which the Eagles were only able to slightly deflect. Maria Speas stepped up from her left defender position and floated one right over the Milford keeper for a 2-0 Comet half-time lead. In the first half the Comets out shot the Eagles 7 to 2. Both teams took 4 corners and were called for 1 foul. Bethany Moser saved both of Milford's shots on goal.
In the second half the Comets gained the wind, a slight downhill advantage, turned up their physical play and began to dominate the game. In the 52nd minute Julia Shutrump collected an Eagles free kick in traffic and quickly played Kaitlyn Heckler, who found Tori Bonno in the middle, who quickly turned and dropped a nice ball over the Eagle defense and onto a streaking Jayna Searles. Jayna made 2 touches and launched a left footed bomb from outside the 18 into the upper 90 for the Comets 3rd and final tally. The Comets did threaten again in the 67th minute when Maria Speas floated a nice ball into the 18 that Elizabeth Berry nearly headed over the Eagles keeper. For the second half the Comets out shot the Eagles 8 to 3. Both teams took 1 corner and the Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Eagles 2. Julia Shutrump saved the one Eagle shot on goal. The Comets stout defense recorded their 3rd shutout in as many games.
The Comets open GMC league play Thursday Night at Oak Hills. The always physical Highlanders bring in a 3-1-0 record and the #7 ranking in the City. |
9/6 | @ Oak Hills | Girls Soccer at Oak Hills on Thursday night was postponed due to weather. Makeup TBA. Next up the girls will visit Pickerington North on Saturday. |

9/13 | @ Lakota West | won | 2-0 | 3-0-1 | 1-0 | When the late summer monsoon of 2018 finally lifted the Comets were ready to rock on the still soft grass of the Lakota West Firebirds.
The Comets took early control of the game and dominated the first 15 minutes of play. The Firebirds weathered the early barrage from the Comets and play turned to a fast paced up and down battle for the balance of the second half. In the 34th minute Elise Haller beat two Firebirds with a nifty move and launched a 20 yard bomb into the upper 90 for a 1-0 Comet halftime lead. In the First half the Comets out shot the Firebirds 10 to 1 and Lakota's keeper saved 3 of the 4 Comet shots on goal. The Firebirds did not manage any shots on goal. The Firebirds were called for 5 fouls to the Comets 3 and took 2 corners to the Comets 1 (that should have been 2, still unclear why it was not).
The Firebirds came out of halftime determined to even the match and committed more players in front of the ball. The Firebirds had the Comets pressed for much of the first 15 minutes of the second half. In the 57th minute the Comets mounted a counter and Vanessa Adkins launched a 30 yard floater that squirted by the Firebirds keeper, Jayna Searles alertly realized that she could not turn quick enough to score and dropped a perfect pass to Allison Winterhalter for the finish. While the Comets speed up top created some issues for the Firebirds and the Mid-Field played their typically strong possession game the heroes of this game were clearly the tough minded Comets defense who kept their season sheet clean posting their 4th consecutive shutout. Mega props to Catherine Berry, Vanessa and Natalie Adkins, Meghan Curran, Maria Speas and Bethany Moser. For the second half the both teams took 7 shots, Bethany Moser saved all 5 Firebird shots on Target while the Firebird keeper was only able to save 2 of the 3 Comets shots on goal. The Firebirds committed 2 fouls and took 5 corners to the Comets 3 fouls and 1 corner.
After playing 3 of their first 4 matches on the road, 2 on grass and 1 on the unusually small field at Ursula, the Comets will be back on turf at MND Saturday at 2:00 and home vs Lakota East on Tuesday at 7:00 (Taco Night). Saturday's match will be a battle of top 4 teams in the city as the 6-0-0 MND Cougars jumped the recently relatively inactive Comets (3-0-1) to take the #3 rank in the city dropping the Comets to #4. |
9/15 | @ MND | won | 2-1 | 4-0-1 | 1-0 | The # 4 ranked Comets traveled to the #3 Ranked Mount Notre Dame Cougars on Saturday afternoon for a Tale of Two Cities. Luckily for the Comets they tallied 2 goals and the Cougars' only tallied 1 win the non-conference affair and keep Mason undefeated on the season.
The first half was the Comets tale as they brought high energy, good ball movement and were the aggressors. In the 6th minute Mackenzie Berryman took a high clear out of the air with her head and directed it to Elise Haller who slipped a cheeky pass thru 4 Cougar defenders to Tori Bonno who had timed her run just right against MND's incessant offside trap. Tori found her self 1 v 1 with the keeper and slipped a nice ball right between the keepers legs to open the scoring. In the 21st minute a booming punt from Bethany Moser traveled past mid-field and landed on a Cougar's head, Jayna Searles got busy with her head and her body to free Tori Bonno who flicked a nice ball over an MND player to Olivia Polnow who found a streaking Jenna Burns down the right flank. Jayna and Kaitlyn Heckler exemplified the Comets first half effort crashing the goal to receive Jenna's cross, that was barely deflected by a Cougar defender, and combine for the goal as Kaitlyn pounded Jayna's spinning shot attempt soundly into the back of the net. The Comets tale ended with a 2-0 halftime lead. In the first half the Comets out shot the Cougars 6 to 4 with 3 to 1 on goal. Bethany Moser saved the loan Cougar shot on Goal. The Comets were called for 7 fouls to the Cougars 5 while the only corner belonged to the Cougars. The Cougars tale came in the second half when they came out determined to show better on their home turf. In the first 22 minutes of the second half the Cougars had the Comets pressed in their end and took 6 shots with 4 on goal to 0 shots for the Comets. Julia Shutrump, in the Comets goal for the second half, was able to deny all 4 threats including a nice quick reaction save in the upper 90. The Comets finally started to even the run of play after the water break finding some success getting into the Cougars half. With 3 minutes to play a Cougar long shot skipped off a Comet defenders head and squirted into the goal. This appeared to wake the Comets as they bowed their backs and played most of the last 3 minutes in the Cougars end to preserve the 2 to 1 victory. In the second half the Cougars out shot the Comets 11 to 4, 6 on goal to 1. Julia Shutrump saved 5. The Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Cougars 1 and again the only corner was taken by the Cougars.
The Comets will be busy this week with three top 10 ranked opponents as #7 Lakota East visits Mason Tuesday Night, the Comets travel to #9 Oak Hills Thursday Night and #10 Ursuline comes to Mason on Saturday. |
9/18 | Lakota East | won | 4-0 | 5-0-1 | 2-0 | Mason girls soccer went into machine mode on Tuesday and rolled over Lakota East 4-0.
The Comets were just a little sluggish out of the gate and then in the 12th minute Allison Winterhalter found Elise Haller for the opening tally. Six minutes later Jenna Burns cleaned-up a lose ball in front of the Firebirds keeper to make it 2-0 Comets. While the Firebirds did have some control of the run of play in the first half the multiple waves of Green Speed proved to be just too much. In the 24th minute Bethany Moser made a nice diving save on the Firebirds only threat of the game. For the first half the Comets out shot the Firebirds 5 to 2 with all 5 on Frame and 2 that found the net. The Comets took both of the corners in the first half and were called for 3 fouls to the Firebirds 2.
The Comets avoided the trap of a 2-0 halftime lead coming out fired-up to start the second half and controlled most of the run play for the second 40 minutes. In the 55th minute Nicole Onweller unleashed a bomb from 30 yards out that sailed over the Firebird keeper for the 3-0 lead. In the 75th minute Elise Haller single-handedly countered a Firebird corner going coast to coast for the fourth and final goal. In the second half the the Comets out shot the Firebirds 7 to 1 with 3 to 0 on frame. The Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Firebirds 1 and the Firebirds took both corners.
The #3 ranked Comets advances to 5-0-1, 2-0-0 in GMC play and will travel to the west side Thursday for another GMC Match with the #7 ranked and always feisty Oak Hills Highlanders. |
9/20 | @ Oak Hills (makeup) | won | 3-2 | 6-0-1 | 3-0 | On the final night of Summer the Comets showed their True Grit scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to beat the #7 ranked 4-4-1 Oak Hills Highlanders 3-2.
The game started like many of the 2018 Comet's games with the Comets opening the scoring in the 9th minute when Elise Haller dropped a ball to Meghan Curran on the left flank and Meghan sailed a 40 yard missile over the Highlanders keeper and into the back of the net. It looked like the Big Green Machine was off and rolling until 3 minutes later when the Highlanders boxed in Bethany Moser on a corner and even the score 1-1. The Comets did not appear to be as sharp as they have shown for most of the 2018 season however they still controlled much of the first half and out shot the Highlanders 8 to 2 with 4 to 1 on goal. The Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Highlanders 3 and the Highlanders took 2 corners to the Comets 1.
The Comets started the second half with a real determination to not let this game slip away and dominated the run of play. In the 49th minute the feisty Highlanders boxed Moser in on another corner and somewhat surprisingly took a 2 to 1 lead. The Comets kept the Highlanders pressed in their half and in the 54th minute earned a penalty kick for a handball in the box; unfortunately for the Comets their PK sailed wide right. While the parents in the stands grew anxious the Comets only grew more determined. Finally in the 71st minute Olivia Polnow pounded a ball bouncing just outside the Highlanders 6 into the back of the net to knot the score at 2. The Comets were not done and kept up the intense pressure. With only a few minutes left in the game Alison Winterhalter baited the Highlander defense into fouling her just off the left corner. While the entire Mason Coaching Staff was pleading with the Comets to slow down and set up Tori Bonno had a different idea and quickly played the kick before the Highlander defense could set up. The ball had eyes and managed to weave its way thru several unprepared Highlander defenders and into the side net for the 3-2 lead which held up for the Comets 6th victory of the season. For the second half the Comets took 13 shots, 7 on goal to the Highlanders 2 shots 1 on goal. The Comets were called for 5 fouls to the Highlanders 1 and the Highlanders took the only corner.
The 6-0-1 Comets are home Saturday Night at 7 PM to host the always dangerous 2-4-2 Lions of Ursuline Academy. |
9/22 | Ursuline Academy | tied | 1-1 | 6-0-2 | 3-0 | On a damp and cool Saturday evening the Comets hosted the Ursuline Lions and found themselves looking in the mirror. Both teams showed good speed and played more of a possession style. Mason had 2 serious threats in the first half to the Lions 1. Five minutes into the match Tori Bonno pressured the Lions keeper into an errant pass that Allison Winterhalter intercepted and banged off the inside of the right post for a very near miss. Twenty minutes into the match Ursuline ripped a nice shot from distance that required a Bethany Moser diving save. Thirty minutes into the match Jenna Burns sped into the mouth of the goal and nearly missed ripping the ball away from the Lions keeper and a Comet score. The Comets had a slight advantage in possession in the first half and took 2 shots with 1 on goal to the Lions 3 shots with 2 on goal. Bethany Moser had 2 saves. The Comets were charged with 4 fouls to Ursuline's 3 and the Comets took the lone corner.
In the second half the Comets played hurried and a bit sloppy and struggled to maintain any lengthy possession. Nine minutes into the second half a Lion made a run at goal which Julia Shutrump stuffed just in front of the goal line, the ball trickled just outside the 6 where another Lion was able to put it away for the opening goal of the match. The Comets responded well and 2 minutes later Vanessa Adkins sent a long ball across the face of the Lions' goal. The Lions' keeper pushed it away and Nicole Onweller made a nice run to the back post where she buried the ball into the net for the equalizer. Shortly after the Comets goal Allison Winterhalter had another good look and ripped a shot that the Lions Keeper was barely able to punch over the crossbar for a Comets' corner. For the last 25 minutes of the match play was fast, somewhat sloppy and up and down the pitch. With 20 seconds left in the contest a Lion timed a run perfectly on a nice thru ball and found herself 1 v 1 with Shutrump. Julia made a brave and spectacular play to preserve the Comets draw throwing her body in front of the Lion and forcing her to send the ball over the end line for a Comet goal kick as time expired. In the second half the Comets took 6 shots 4 on goal to the Lions 4 shots 3 on goal. Shutrump had 2 saves. The Comets were called for 2 fouls to the Lions 1 and the Lions took 2 corners to the Comets 1. All in all it was a pretty evenly played match.
The 6-0-2 Comets finish their busy 8 games in 17 days run with 3 games this week. Tuesday the Comets travel to Hamilton to play the 7-4-0 Big Blue for a critical GMC match-up. Thursday the Comets host the #5 ranked 7-1-2 Sycamore Aviators for another critical GMC match. Saturday the Comets host the #1 ranked 7-0-3 Loveland Tigers for a match that will likely have implications on the final #1 ranking in the city. The Comets will need to take this week 1 game at a time as all 3 matches will be tough. After these 3 critical matches the Comets settle into a Tuesday, Thursday match rhythm for the last 2 weeks of the regular season. The State Tournament begins the week of October 15th. |
9/25 | @ Hamilton | won | 2-0 | 7-0-2 | 4-0 | The Comets women’s soccer team came out fast and fighting under the lights on the pitch at Hamilton High School Tuesday night, dominating possession with 18 total shots, 6 on goal, to Big Blue's 4 shots on goal. Bethany Moser had 4 saves for the shutout. The Comets jumped into an attack just five minutes in, when a pass up the middle gave Allison Winterhalter the angle to drop it through the Harrison back line to a charging Elise Haller. Haller raced toward goal and took a shot that was stopped. Minutes later, a cross gave Winterhalter the shot. That was a familiar theme in the first half, with a stalwart Comets defense, including Vanessa Atkins, Natalie Atkins, Catherine Berry, Meghan Curran and Mackenzie Berryman, not giving the Wildcats offense much opportunity to work and the middle of Tori Bonno and Olivia Polnow distributing up top over and over. Scoring opened nearly 15 minutes in, when a corner by Tori Bonno hit the keeper’s hands and bounced in the goal. Passes by Bonno and Polnow gave shooting opportunities to Haller, Janya Searles, Kaitlyn Heckler, and Berry. Thirty two minutes in, Searles hit a pass to a speedy Jenna Burns on the right wing, and she worked it up to the post and popped it past the keeper. The 2-0 score stood at halftime. Hamilton came out fast in the second half, setting up a few opportunities in the opening minutes. Lightening delayed and ultimately ended the game 10 minutes into the second half securing the Comets 2-0 victory. The # 3 ranked Comets, now 7-0-2 (4-0-0 GMC), are hosting the # 6 ranked Sycamore Aviators who come in with a record of 7-2-1 (3-0-1 GMC) Thursday evening at 7 PM. This is a critical GMC conference match-up that will also have implications on the tournament seeding, let's pack the stands to support our Comets!! |
9/27 | Sycamore | won | 2-0 | 8-0-2 | 5-0 | As the fall weather settled in on Thursday evening the #3 Comets heated up against the #6 Sycamore Aviators with a 2-0 victory. With the win the Comets move to 8-0-2 (5-0-0 in GMC play) setting up a battle for the #1 seed in the city when the Loveland Tigers visit Mason on Saturday evening at 7 PM.
The Comets controlled the Aves from the opening whistle with the Comets deep bench making a significant difference in wearing down the Aves. The Comets broke the ice in the 30th minute when Tori Bonno slid a ball thru to the end line and Elise Haller alertly out maneuvered an Ave defender trying to shield her from the ball. Elise sent a beautiful cross thru the mouth of the goal for a strong finish by Allison Winterhalter and a 1-0 halftime lead. In the first half the Comets out shot the Aves 8 to 3, 5 to 3 on goal and both teams took 2 corners. The Comets were called for 4 fouls to the Aves 2. Bethany Moser saved all 3 Aves shots including a flurry of activity in the 20th minute that required 2 nice saves.
The Comets maintained control of the game in the second half and in the 73rd minute Mackenzie Berryman trapped a booming punt off her chest, neatly took the ball to her feet, beat a Sycamore defender and slid a ball to Tori Bonno. Tori dribbled thru the middle of three Aves and found Nicole Onweller on the left flank. Nicole unleashed a 40 yard bomb that sailed over the keeper and into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. The Comets were picking up steam as the Aves were winding down and controlled most of the last 15 minutes of the match. In the second half the Comets out shot the Aves 9 to 2, 4 to 1 on Goal and took 4 corners to the Aves 1. Both teams were called for 4 fouls. Bethany Moser and the Comets stingy defense recorded their 7th shutout in 10 matches.
Be there Saturday Night at 7:00 when the Comets host the reigning State Champs from Loveland. |
9/29 | Loveland | lost | 2-0 | 8-1-2 | 5-0 | The Comets reaffirmed Saturday Night that they are among a handful of Southwest Ohio teams that are in the upper echelon, losing to Loveland 2-0. The Comets came out visibly ready to play, confident and pumped up to host the defending State Champs and current #1 rated Loveland Tigers. The Comets, finishing the meat of their schedule with 8 significant matches in 17 days, appeared fit and fresh.
In the second minute Loveland's speed earned a corner and the Comets' speed countered. Allison Winterhalter found Elise Haller streaking down the right flank and Elise's shot from 18 glanced off the back post barely missing the opening tally. In the 5th minute Loveland's right wing got in behind the Comet defense and earned a corner deep in the Comets' end. The next minute proved to be the turning point of the game, Loveland was more physical in using and giving up their bodies to create havoc around the Comets' 18 earning them the opening goal. Bethany Moser charged a bouncing ball between her 6 and 18 and knocked it away along with knocking down a Tiger attacker. Loveland continued to battle and sent a dangerous ball in from the right corner of the 18 and a Loveland attacker worked around the injured player to out fight the Comet defense for the ball that she ripped low and hard into the right side net. Both teams had solid skills and the ball moved up and down the pitch throughout the half. In the 29th minute Loveland out muscled Mason on a Bethany Moser clear sending a dangerous ball into the the box where a Tiger slid in front of the Mason defender to deflect the ball past a charging Bethany Moser for a 2-0 lead. With 15 seconds left in the half Elise Haller released a left footed in swinger from the right 18, the ball hit the Loveland keeper in the hands and bounced over her right shoulder into the mouth of the goal. The keeper quickly pounced on the ball and collected it back under her body. In the first half the Tigers out shot the Comets 8 to 6 with 6 to 4 on goal. The Tigers took 3 corners to the Comets 1 and the Comets were called for 3 fouls to the Tigers 1. Bethany Moser recorded 4 saves. Mason worked hard in the second half attempting to even the score. The Comets stepped up their physical play and started winning their share or more of the 50/50 balls resulting in the Comets taking clear control of the run of play. The Comets had several good looks in the second half but were unable to shake the net. In the second half the Comets out shot the Tigers 8 to 1 with 2 to 1 on goal. The Comets took 3 corners to Loveland's 1 and the both teams were called for 1 foul.
The Comets now 8-1-2 (5-0-0 in GMC) have 4 remaining regular season games all with GMC foe. First the Princeton Vikings, fresh off a big 2 to 1 victory over Hamilton, will visit Mason Tuesday Night at 7:00. Then the Comets travel Thursday Night to the much improved 4-5-2 Colerain Cardinals who have an impressive win over Oak Hills. Next Tuesday the Comets host the Middletown Middies for Senior Night. If the Comets take care of business in these 3 matches that will set up a GMC winner take all showdown with the always physical Fairfield Indians at home on October 11th. |
10/2 | Princeton | won | 8-0 | 9-1-2 | 6-0 | On a warm October evening mason handled their business and defeated the Princeton Vikings 8-0.
The Vikings fresh off a big victory over Big Blue came to play at Mason and for the first 11 minutes of the match gave the Comets all they could handle. At the 11 minute mark a hungry second wave of Comets entered the match and took control. In the 13th minute Natalie Atkins dribbled from her center defender position thru a herd of Vikings and found the speedy Jenna Burns for the opening goal. In the 20th minute hard working Natalie Lanis was rewarded for challenging Viking defenders when she took an attempted clear of the chest and found herself alone at the 6 with the ball and beat the keeper. In the 23rd minute pesky Jayna Searles knocked a ball free from a Viking defender and Elise Haller was free to the goal for the 3-0 lead. In the 25th minute a host of Comets played perfect possession passes that ended with Maria Speas, running out of her defensive position, playing a nice ball to Tori Bonno and then running off her pass to be rewarded with the give and go and the opportunity to beat the Princeton keeper for the 4th goal. In the 32nd minute Tori played a ball to Elise Haller who dribbled thru 4 Vikings to smoke the 5th goal past the Princeton keeper. For the first half the Comets out shot the Vikings 19 to 3 with 10 to 1 shots on goal. The Comets took 4 corners to Princeton's 1 and were called for 2 fouls to Princeton's 1. Bethany Moser easily saved the 1 Princeton shot on goal.
The second half started the way the first half ended. In the 42nd minute Tori Bonno played a long thru ball to a streaking Natalie Adkins, now playing on the left wing, Natalie 1 v 1 with the keeper ripped a shot that the very capable Viking keeper blocked and Vanessa Adkins cleaned up for the 6-0 lead. Princeton's keeper, who had 7 saves on the night many of which were beautiful efforts, must have thought she was seeing double when she blocked 1 Adkins only to see another on her back post finishing the goal. In the 46th minute the Adkins reign continued when Vanessa Adkins floated one in for her second goal and the 7-0 lead. The Adkins twins were not quite done, in the 56th minute Natalie Adkins slipped a perfect thru ball to Megan Rubsam for the 8-0 tally. Coach Schur called off the dogs and the Comets ran out the last 24 minutes of the game. In the second half the Comets took 8 shots 4 on goal to Princeton's 2 shots, 1 on goal and were called for 1 foul to Princeton's 2. The Comets took both corners of the half and Julia Shutrump saved the one Princeton threat.
Thursday Night the 9-1-2 Comets head to Colerain to try to keep their perfect 6-0-0 GMC record in tac |
10/4 | @ Colerain | won | 1-0 | 10-1-2 | 7-0 | Mason prevailed last night with a close 1-0 win at Colerain.
The first half was a struggle as the feisty Cardinals were determined to out muscle the Comets. The Comets did control the run of play and out shot the Cardinals 4 to 0 with 2 on goal but neither team shook the net. The Comets took the only corner and were called for 4 fouls to Colerain's 1.
In the second half the Comets stepped up their physicality and in the 46th minute Nicole Onweller slipped a nice ball to Tori Bonno who found herself 1 v 1 with the keeper only to be denied on a nice save by the Cardinal who had 8 impressive saves on the evening. In the 57th minute the Comets earned a foul 25 yards from the Cardinals door step and Tori Bonno slipped the free kick just under the crossbar for the lone goal of the match. The Comet's second half midfield of Olivia Polnow, Natalie Lanis, Mackenzie Berryman, Jayna Searles and Elizabeth Berry did the heavy lifting and banging to feed multiple balls up to Tori Bonno, Nicole Onweller, Elise Haller and Jenna Burns who were also giving up their bodies to fight for shots on goal. The defense anchored by Catherine Berry and Natalie Adkins and flanked by Vanessa Adkins, Meghan Curran and Maria Speas made sure the ball stayed in Colerain's end, not allowing a single shot on goal all night and preserving another clean sheet for the big punting Bethany Moser. In the second half the Comets out shot the Cardinals 12 to 0 with 7 on goal and took both of the half's corners. The Cardinals were called for 5 fouls to Mason's 4.
The 10-1-2 Comets (7-0 GMC) get a well deserved weekend off before heading into the crucial final week of the regular season. Next up for the Comets are the Middies from Middletown on Senior Night, Tuesday October 9th. The Comets will end their regular season Campaign at Home Thursday October 11th when the 12-0-2 and #2 ranked Fairfield Indians bring their 6-0-1 GMC record to Mason. A GMC title could be on the line that evening as the Comets remain unbeaten in league play. Mason girls soccer is the #3 seed in the upcoming Sectional tournament. They will host the winner of the Talawanda (10-3-1)/Princeton (1-9-1) contest on Saturday, Oct. 20th at 7:00. |
10/9 | Middletown | won | 8-0 | 11-1-2 | 8-0 | GMC CHAMPS The Mason Girls Soccer team rolled Over Middletown 8-0, Tuesday on Senior Night. It was a special night all the way around. Fairfield tied with Hamilton helping the Comets secure the 2018 GMC Championship! The outcome of Masn's final home game with FF this Thursday will be a non-factor as far as league standings since the Indians arleady have two ties on the season and Mason's record is unblemished in the GMC. This is Mason Girls Soccer first GMC title since 2014 and 7th overall since entering the GMC in 2007 (6 outright and 1 co-champ). Mason dominated every aspect of the game against Middletown. Seven of the 8 goals scored were scored by seniors on Senior Night. Goals by Catherine Berry, Natalie Adkins, Jordan Massa, Mackenzie Berryman and JuIia Shutrump ensured that every Senior has scored a goal this year. Alison Winterhalter, Jenna Burns and Elizabeth Berry rounded out the scoring. The entire Mason squad worked selflessly to make tonight special for all the seniors. Six assists were delivered in the team effort, 2 by Catherine Berry and 1 each by Natalie Lanis, Alison Winterhalter, Tori Bonno and Leah Shaw. The Comets took all 6 corner kicks on the night and Middletown was called for 7 fouls to Mason's 4. The Comets secured their 10th shutout in 14 games. The overall team unity and comradery were special to watch and bode well for the Comets as they head into state tournament play.
The Comets will host the Fairfield Indians Thursday Night with hopes of finishing with a perfect 9-0 GMC record and knocking off the defending GMC champs, ranked #2 in the city and #10 in the state. The #3 seeded Comets have a bye in the first round of the Sectional tournament and will play the winner of #18 seed Talawanda and #24 seed Princeton on Saturday October 20th at Home at 7PM. Provided the Comets get past that second round match they will likely face either #6 seed Anderson or #13 seed Hamilton on Tuesday October 23rd at Sycamore HS at 7 PM for the Cincinnati 4 Sectional Title. |
10/11 | Fairfield | WON | 1-0 | 12-1-2 | 9-0 | On the first chilly evening in the fall of 2018, the Comets stayed hot. The 8-0-0 Comets expected to be in a battle as they looked to keep their perfect GMC record intact against the second place Fairfield Indians who came in 6-0-2. Indeed they were able to do just that, with a close 1-0 win over the defending GMC Champs.
The first half saw the ball moving up and down the field rapidly as the Indians took every possible opportunity to send long balls for their speedy strikers and the Comets countered with quick possession. The Indians were as physical as expected and the Comets held their own. Bethany Moser made a brave save in the 25th minute giving up her body to pounce on a ball that was surrounded by Indians inside her 6. In the 34th minute a quick Comet counter moved from Tori Bonno to Nicole Onweller who powered her way thru a pair of Indians to send a beautiful ball to Allison Winterhalter who beat the Fairfield keeper with an excellent finish to the back post. Onweller and Winterhalter battled hard all night keeping steady pressure on the Indians defense. The Comets Midfield worked hard to win and keep possession and the Comets stingy defense turned in another stellar performance. The first half ended 1-0 for the Comets. Both teams took 4 shots with 2 on goal in the first half. The Comets took 2 corners to Fairfield's 1 and Fairfield was called for 3 fouls to the Comets 2.
In the Second half the Comets midfield and attackers put higher pressure on the Indian's giving them less time to send long balls forward which relieved some of the pressure on the Comet's defense. In the second half the Comets out shot the Indians 8 to 5, both teams had 3 shots on goal and 1 corner. The Comets higher pressure netted them 5 fouls to Fairfield's 2. Bethany Moser had 5 saves on the night.
The Comets finish the regular season 12-1-2 with a perfect 9-0-0 GMC record, outscoring their 9 GMC opponents 31-2. The Comets recorded 8 shutouts in GMC play and 11 shutouts overall. With a bye in the first round of the play-offs, the Comets will be idle until Saturday October 20th when they will take on the winner of Princeton and Talawanda at home at 7:00. Best of luck to the Comets, we hope to be watching you for several more games in a deep tournament run. The Mason Girls Soccer team will begin post season play versus Talawanda (#18 seed) on Saturday, Oct. 20th at Mason. The Braves knocked off Princeton 5-0 to advance. The winner will meet either Hamilton of Anderson in the Sectional Final on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd at Sycamore, 7:00 pm. |
10/20 | SECTIONAL vs. Talawanda/Princeton @ Mason 7:00 |
won | 3-0 | 13-1-2 | 9-0 | With a strong storm sending several rain squalls screaming across the pitch the Comets battled both the sudden blasts and the Talawanda Braves to secure the 3-0 victory last Saturday night in a Sectional semi-final contest.
The Comets started the fist half heading north into a heavy wind that oscillated between blowing directly at them and left to right across the field. The Comets took early control out shooting the Braves 6 to 1 in the first 15 minutes. In the 16th minute Natalie Lanis fought to free a ball that she crossed to Olivia Polnow at the middle of the 18, Polnow pushed the ball right to Allison Winterhalter who slipped it thru the defense to Jenna Burns. Burns sent a floater against the wind to the back post where Nicole Onweller was running hard to the spot and completed the finish of the opening tally. With only 30 seconds left in the half, Onweller made a nifty move and earned a free kick just out side the left corner of the 18. Winterhalter sent the free kick low and hard at the Braves wall, a flinch in the wall created just the crack needed to allow the ball thru. Onweller attempted to steer the shot jumping barely over the ball, Bonno boxed out two Braves attempting to break the impending danger and Haller arrived at the back post just in time to behold the self seeing strike secure the 2-0 halftime lead for the Comets. In the first half the Comets out shot the Braves 15 to 1, 7 to 1 on frame. The Comets took 3 corners and earned 2 fouls to none of either for Talawanda. Bethany Moser had 1 save.
The tempest turned to a cold and steady wind at the Comets back in the second half. Five minutes into the half the Comets earned a corner off a deflection of a Bonno shot. Bonno floated the corner to the middle of the 6 where Mackenzie Berryman headed it up and back for Haller to hit a beautiful one time into the back of the net. The Comets dominated the second half out shooting the Braves 17 to 2 with 7 on target to 2. The Comets took 3 corners and were called for 4 fouls to none of either for the Braves. Bethany Moser recorded 2 saves. The stingy Comets defense secured their 12th shutout in 16 games.
The Big Green Machine is off and rolling on their tournament run. Next up is the Sectional Title against the #6 seeded Anderson Redskins Tuesday Night at 7:00 PM at Sycamore. Five GMC Teams; Mason, Fairfield, Sycamore, West and East have all advanced to Sectional Final. The winner Tuesday night will play either Centerville or Miamisburg for a District Title on Saturday, Oct. 27th, 7:00 pm at a site TBA. |
10/23 | Sectional Final @ Sycamore 7:00 |
won | 1-0 | 14-1-2 | 9-0 | Mason Women's Soccer Advances to the District Finals with a Sectional Title win over Anderson 1-0 on Tuesday night! The win is Mason's second consecutive Sectional Title and 8th Sectional Title in the last 9 years. On a crisp October evening the resilient Comets wrecked the Redskins hope of advancing to the next round of the tournament.
The Comets appeared a little nervous to start the match, Anderson controlled much of the first 10 minutes and took the first 2 shots on Goal. Anderson's speed up top created some early trouble for the Comets. The Comets settled in and started to control Anderson's speed and the game. Nicole Onweller had a great look at the goal in the 11th minute on a slick thru ball from Tori Bonno and Anderson banged one off the post in the 24th minute for the 2 greatest threats of the first half. The first half ended 0-0 with the Comets out shooting Anderson 6 to 3 with 5 to 2 on goal. The Comets took the only corner and both teams were called for 3 fouls. Bethany Moser recorded 2 saves.
The Comets maintained their momentum in the second half and in the 47th minute Allison Winterhalter rocked a shot off the post from the right side that was neatly collected by Elise Haller on the left end line, dropped to Olivia Polnow who dropped it to Meghan Curran at the left 18 corner who ripped a shot that deflected off a Redskin defender's head and into the far corner of the Goal for the game winner. After a little scare in the fist 10 minutes the Comets stingy defense really clamped down; Catherine Berry, Natalie Adkins, Vanessa Adkins, Meghan Curran and Maria Speas really earned their keep chasing Anderson off their door step for the last 70 minutes of the contest. Olivia Polnow and Mackenzie Berryman held the midfield together in the second half with help from Natalie Lanis and Elizabeth Berry. In the Second half the Comets out shoot the Redskins 9 to 3 with 6 to 2 on Goal. Allison Winterhalter, Nicole Onweller, Elise Haller, Jenna Burns, Jayna Searles and Kaitlyn Heckler tested Anderson's goalie regularly forcing her to make several very nice saves, 10 total saves on the night. Moser recorded two saves in the second half, 4 for the match in delivering Mason's 13th clean sheet in 17 tries. Both teams took 2 corners in the second half, Mason earned 2 fouls to Anderson's 1.

Junior Emma fell in three long sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, to Rondini of Magnificat in her first round match. Saturday, Oct. 20th Less than 10 minutes from their home courts, the Mason girls tennis team traveled to the Lindner Tennis Center in the hopes of seeing their doubles teams play each other. The Lady Comets got their wish, but not in the fashion they'd hoped for as both teams fell in the semifinals, setting up their literal "kiss your sister" consolation match. Mason's top doubles entry of Ananya Aggarwal/Sanjana Reddy made a monstrous comeback in their semifinal with Mayfield's Hannah Kassaie/Caitlyn Hsu. After losing the first set 6-3, then getting down 4-0 in the second, Mason rallied to force a tiebreaker, but eventually fell short and lost the match 6-3, 7-6. "We had some chances," Mason coach Mike Reid said. "We just couldn't get a lead. They were kind of tentative. It's a momentum game. We didn't play quite as well as we'd like to, but it was still a great match." Sophomores Raina Chada/Annie Kruse faced the defending champions of Olentangy Liberty, Maddie Atway and Dani Schoenly. Liberty was as billed, winning 6-0, 6-2, eventually taking the state title. "I think we could have played better, but I think a lot of it was our kids thinking they were a lot better than them," Reid said of the loss to Liberty. The team of Aggarwal/Reddy prevailed for third place over Chada/Kruse, 6-1, 7-5. "It was the three-four (match) but we both had some really tough first rounds," Reddy said. "Two teams from the same team getting third and fourth, I think it's pretty good. We're really looking forward to team state tomorrow." Aggarwal, who finished fourth in singles last year and now third in doubles, will rotate back to first singles for Mason on Sunday at the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament. |
