GMC CO-CHAMPS!

In what has become a classic rivalry, Mason and Lakota West added another one to the series this past Saturday at the Mason Middle School arena. After an early season 1-point loss to the Firebirds (undefeated in the league to start the game), the Comet girls put together a total team effort and well executed game plan to defeat West and claim a share of the 2017-18 GMC title.

It is the 2nd consecutive season that the two schools have shared the league's top spot (Mason won the title outright in 2013). Mason extended its winning streak to 14 games despite the absence of junior Sammie Puisis (averaging 17.6 points per game), the reigning GMC offensive player of the year, who was out with the flu. Overall, Mason finishes the regular season with a 19-3 record while Lakota West closes with a 20-2 record.

The game was played in back-and-forth style with the largest lead ending up being the final score (61-54).  Mason held a 1-point lead at the half, then 48-42 to begin the fourth. Mason was able to hold off the Firebirds and took a late lead of 55-54. Mason junior guard Sade Tucker hit a 3-pointer to push the lead to four points.

Sophomore Alanna Carter (who stepped in for Puisis) was sensational with a career-high 19 points. She made three crucial foul shots (7-8 from the line) down the stretch to help her team to the win.

Mason senior Tihanna Fulton hit some big shots in the last quarter going 7 of 10 from the floor for 17 points and nine rebounds. Secret Hughes, came off the bench and added a couple of big baskets for Mason. Megan Wagner distributed 6 assists. Senior Anna Brinkmann was consistent as always contributing 9 points and going 5-6 from the charity stripe. Again, the win was a total team effort.

Now the Comets will look to make a deep run in the post season, with the expectation that the two teams will meet again in March.

won 43-34 22-3

GIRLS BASKETBALL EARNS DISTRICT 3-PEAT!

For the third consecutive season and 6th time overall, the Mason Girls Basketball team has achieved an OHSAA District Championship, defeating Beavercreek last Saturday 43-34 in a come-from-behind classic. The Comets outscored the Beavers 18-3 in the fourth quarter to advance to the Regional semi-finals.

Beavercreek (21-5) appeared to be in great position to stun the Comets and led 31-25 after three quarters. Then the Comets "D" took over and the Beavers’ offense was unplugged to go with eight turnovers and two missed free throws. The Beavers’ only bucket in the game-changing fourth quarter came with 28 seconds left on a 3-pointer.

Key free throw shooting by the Comets was a huge factor in the win. Mason was 18-19 from the charity stripe (94.7%).  Mason got solid scoring from Sade Tucker and Sammie Puisis (12) and Tihanna Fulton with 11.

The Comets (22-3) advance to the next level in the post season and have earned another shot at defending D-I state champ Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame in a D-I regional semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fairmont’s Trent Arena. MND advanced with a 48-28 defeat of Wayne. Last season MND defeated Mason in the Regional final by a score of 41-35.

Lakota West (23-1) will play Walnut Hills (23-1) in the other regional semi at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday. West advanced with a 53-29 defeat of Fairmont.

Mason Girls Overwhelm MND In Sweet 16 Rematch!

The Comet Girls Basketball team put last years regional final loss to Mount Notre Dame behind them, Wednesday night at Kettering Fairmont. As a matter of fact they put it "way" behind them with a 53-32 win to propel them to the State Great 8!

Mason used a 11-0 first quarter run to jump out in front, all the while their swarming defense suffocated the Cougars. The defense forced MND, the defending state champions, into hurried shots and 17 turnovers on the night, while Mason racked up 17 steals, many of which turned into points. The Comets (23-3) held MND (22-5) to a season-low in points.

Mason led 26-12 at the half and expanded the lead to 20+ points during the fourth quarter. Mason is in the regional tournament for a third consecutive season and sixth time overall.

The Comets were led by senior forward Sammie Puisis, who had a game-high 17 points including three 3-pointers. Junior guard Sade Tucker was a spark plug on the night had 15 points including three 3-pointers.

The Comets advance to play Lakota West (25-2) in the regional final at 7 p.m. this Saturday, back at Kettering Fairmont. Lakota West easily defeated Walnut Hills 60-31 in the night's first semifinal.

Lakota West (ranked #5) and Mason (ranked #7)---Greater Miami Conference co-champions the past two seasons -- split the regular-season series. Most recently, Mason defeated visiting Lakota West 61-54. Its sure to be another classic between the two league powerhouses.

The winner will advance to the State Final Four and face either Pickerington Central (25-2 ranked #1) or Westerville South (21-5), Friday, March 16th @ Jerome Schottenstein Center at 8:00 pm.

REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

vs. West

won 54-51 24-3

The Mason Girls Basketball team will return to State! The Comets defeated Lakota West 54-51 Saturday night at Trent Arena to claim the programs 5th regional title and advance to the State Final Four.

Saturday's classic was the "rubber match" between the two local basketball giants as the teams split during the regular season. The highly-anticipated All-Greater Miami Conference regional final lived up to every bit of the hype Saturday night. There were 11 lead changes and seven ties. For four quarters the packed house was thrilled with great plays and clutch shots with the Comets pulling away late in the game.

Mason was able to score key points at the charity stripe, going 27 of 35 from the free throw line while West was 10 of 12. Mason rolled off the last 10 points of the second quarter to grab a 28-23 halftime. West responded in the third quarter, grabbing a 29-28 lead but Mason came back with a 6-0 run. Mason hit a late three-pointer at the end of the third to lead 36-35.

The Firebirds led most of the fourth quarter until Sammie Puisis made a free throw to tie the game at 46 with 1:36 left. Sade Tucker’s transition layup 30 seconds later gave Mason a 48-46 advantage and the lead for good.

Brinkmann’s two free throws extended the lead to 52-49 with 18.1 seconds left before Tucker’s free throws.

Junior guard Sade Tucker led the Comets with 20 points. Anna Brinkman had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Comets. Tihanna Fulton added eight points and seven boards while Sammie Puisis scored seven of her nine points in the final quarter.

Mason girls now begin preparations to play the States #1 AP poll winner, Pickerington Central (26-2) this coming Friday night at OSU's Schottenstein Center. Pickerington got by Westerville South 60-52 last Saturday to punch their ticket to state.

The Division 1 State-Semi-Final game will tipoff at 8:00 pm. The Comets last won the state title in 2000. The winner will play either Wadsworth or Solon in the State Title game on Saturday, March 17th, 8:30 pm.

STATE SEMI-FINAL

vs. Pickerington Central

@ Schottenstein Center 8:00 pm

lost 62-48 24-4 15-1

Mason concluded their 2017-18 season where almost every Division 1 girls team could only dream about....at the State Championships. Riding a 19-game win streak and making its second state tournament appearance in the last three seasons, Comet girls ran into a Columbus buzzsaw Friday night in a 62-48 Division I state semifinal loss at Ohio State's Schottenstein Center.

Mason (24-4), which only led once in the game for a total of 81 seconds, had early chances in the first half and fell behind 24-21 at the half. Central slowly pulled away in the second half.

"I think they were a lot more physical on us and we were being probably bumped off our line a little more than we wanted to be in regard to making cuts and they took a lot of things away that we normally have," said Matula. "But again, I look back and think situationally, we had opportunities to do some things and make some clear buckets that we normally do. This was one of those games that didn't go our way in that sense. You go to the free throw line over 30 times, the stats tell you right there if you make 10 more of those and two more layups and it's a different ball game, but you can play the 'if' game all you want ... it didn't happen for us this time."

Mason junior Sammie Puisis, a Florida State commit, was a point of emphasis all night for Pickerington Central's defense. Puisis led Mason with 14 points and eight rebounds and senior Tihanna Fulton had 11 points and eight boards in her final high school game.

Congratulations to all the girls and coaches on another "season to remember"!
