With the scored tied 33-33 with 41.7 seconds left, the Comets couldn’t find any open shots, and Schreiter ended up winning the game with the worst shot possible. Comets Take Hawks In OT Win!

The Mason boys basketball team "turned the table" on Lakota East Friday night, earning a 57-53 overtime victory to take a commanding 3-game lead in the GMC. Last season it was East who took an OT contest from the Comets to force the two schools to share the conference title.

Mason got a career performance from their senior standout, Kyle Lamotte, to push them closer to their first-ever, outright GMC championship. The Thunderhawks had no answer for Lamotte as the 6-3 guard scored 33 points to lead all scorers. The Comets, ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer Division I coaches’ poll, came back from an eight-point deficit in the third quarter to win their 15th straight game and improve to 12-0 in the GMC. Seventh-ranked Lakota East (12-5, 9-3 GMC) fell into a tie for second place with Oak Hills, three games behind Mason with four league game left to play.

The game lived up to the anticipation that drew a packed house, including rowdy student sections from both schools. In the fourth quarter it looked like neither team wanted to win it, with both teams missing crucial free throws in the final mintues. East had a chance to send their fans home happy when a Comet foul with 1 second remaining in regulation occurred. The Hawks were only able to make 1 of 2 free throws to send the game into OT. Mason took control in the extra period seal the win.

Next up Mason will host Hamilton on Tuesday, February 2nd.

Mason Falls In District Final

The Comets magical season came to end Saturday at Wright State with a 63-38 loss to Wilmington in the District Final. Mason had won 22 straight games since dropping its season opener, 51-49, to Dublin Jerome. The Comets went undefeated in the Greater Miami Conference, becoming just the third team, and the first since Princeton in 2009, to accomplish the feat.

Wilmington led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter but Mason started climbing back into the game behind junior Eddie Puisis and senior Kyle Lamotte. Puisis scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, in the second quarter as the Comets cut their deficit to six points, 22-16, at halftime.

Lamotte, who joined Hurrican standout Jarron Cumberland on first-team All-District team, became more aggressive to start the second half, driving to the basket repeatedly and getting to the foul line. His two free throws and a basket by junior Matt King had Mason on the verge of taking its first lead of the game.

Cumberland responded by hitting consecutive 3-pointers sandwiched around a Mason turnover and scored the final 10 points of the third quarter to regain some breathing room for Wilmington, 38-27. The University of Cincinnati-bound Cumberland scored 35 points, including 18 as part of a 23-2 run that began late in the third quarter. Mason never recovered in the fourth.

Mason ran out to an early 2nd half lead but again West was able to fight back. Mason (11-2, 8-2) had a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but West fought back again, taking a 45-44 advantage with 5:37 left in the game. The Comets never recovered and could not match the Firebirds come back efforts in the final minutes.

Mason’s Lauren Van Kleunen had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Next up Mason has a non-conference game at Alter on Wednesday. They will once again compete in the annual prestigious Classic In the Country in Berlin, Ohio this coming weekend. The Comets will play Rock River Magnifcat HS on Saturday (6:20 pm) and Wadsworth on Sunday (8:20 pm).

1/13 @ Alter won 52-48 12-2 8-2

Mason upset top ranked Alter HS on Wednesday night by a score of 52-48. It was a non-league girls high school matchup between two state heavyweights. The Knights are the defending Division II state champions and were ranked No. 1 in this week’s debut of the Associated Press state polls. Mason was ranked No. 4 in D-I.

Alter held onto an early lead, but Mason, loaded with a lineup of five players 6 feet or taller, gradually wore out the Knights in rebounding. That was ultimately the difference, especially when Alter was often limited to one shot in the second half.

Mason’s 6-3 center and Marquette University signee Lauren Van Kleunen tallied a game-high 21 points. Makenzie Dixon added 13 for Mason (12-2). Another senior, Jailyn Mason, was a tough matchup for Alter. She’s signed with Arkansas.

The girls will compete in the annual prestigious Classic In the Country in Berlin, Ohio this coming weekend. The Comets will play Rock River Magnifcat HS on Saturday (6:20 pm) and Wadsworth on Sunday (8:20 pm). Rocky River is the #10 ranked team in the state. Wadsworth is undefeated and ranked #1 overall in the girls division 1 polls this week.

Comets Shock State's #1

On Sunday evening the Mason Comets took to the court against the top ranked team in the State, Wadsworth HS. In what should have been a nailbiter for the Comets, it really wasn't, with Mason pulling off a 41-30 upset win.

Mason led by as many as 19 in the 2nd half before a late game, furious comeback attempt by Wadsworth fell short.

Lauren Van Kluenen, a 6-3 Marquette recruit, led Mason with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Arkansas-bound point guard Jailyn Mason added 12 points and seven assists, while Samari Mowbray (6-2) and 6-footers Samantha Puisis, Mariah Campbell, Anna Brinkmann and Tihanna Fulton were strong defensively.

Lauren Van Kluenen earned Player of the Game recognition.

The Mason Girls Basketball team capped a week that saw them knock off the top teams in Division 1 (Wadsworth) and 2 (Alter) in addition to beating the States #10 ranked squad (Magnificat).

SECTIONAL CHAMPS-GIRLS BASKETBALL!!

The Mason Girls Basketball team (22-2) defended their Sectional Title on Friday night with a 64-29 romp over Kings. With the win the Comets punched their ticket to the District Final.

For Mason this was another lopsided affair. The Comets put up 41 first half points and allowed Kings only 11 in the first two halves. It was all about the defense as Mason held the Knights to just 24% shooting from the floor and forced 22 turnovers.

The team got balanced scoring from Lauren Van Kleunen (12), Sammie Puisis (12) and Mariah Campbell (11). Jailyn Mason dished out 10 assists to her teammates. Puisis was 4-7 from behind the 3-point line.

@ Harrison 5:00 pm

won 48-43 23-2

DISTRICT CHAMPS!

Sweet 16!!

The Mason Girls Basketball team overcame a sluggish start and determined opponent on Saturday, to win another District Title. The Comets used a fourth quarter surge and their own stingy defense to outlast McAuley in the District Championship by a score of 48-43 at Harrison. It was Mason' fourth overall district title and advances them to the OHSAA Regional "Sweet 16".

McAuley (18-7) dominated the first quarter, taking a 17-9 lead after the initial eight minutes. Mason responded, holding the Mohawks to just six points in the second quarter, but McAuley still held a one-point advantage at halftime. It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when the Comets (23-2) were able to pull away, outscoring McAuley 12-7 in the final frame.

Mason went 1-for-11 from 3-point range Saturday and 15 of 45 from the floor. McAuley, on the other hand, went 7 of 16 from deep and 13 of 32 overall.

Lauren Van Kleunen led Mason with 20 points (14 from the FT line) and 10 rebounds. Mariah Campbell finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Comets. Mason outrebounded the Mohawks 31-23 and 16-7 on the offensive glass.

The victory places Mason in the regional semifinal, Wednesday, against top-seeded Wayne (25-1). The Warriors dispatched Ursuline, 51-34, earlier in the day in Harrison.

Mason last appeared in a Region Semi-Final in the 2012-13 season, then losing to Kettering Fairmont that year in the regional championship.

Mason and Wayne will faceoff at 8 p.m. in Kettering. The winner will play for a regional championship and will face either Springboro or defending state champion, Lakota West.

Lakota West and Mason were the top two teams in the Enquirer’s final Division I poll. They were ranked No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in the final AP Division I poll. Mason’s only two losses this year came to West. West’s lone loss came to Wayne. The Warriors were ranked fourth in the final AP poll.

GREAT EIGHT FOR MASON GIRLS!

The Mason Girls Basketball team defeated a young and overmatched Huber Heights Wayne, 58-37, to advance to the Regional Final this Saturday. Wayne entered the contest with only one loss on the season and were Dayton brackets #1 seed.

The Warriors, who start three freshmen and two sophomores, struggled with Mason’s length and bench depth, especially in the pivotal third quarter. Mason forward, Lauren Van Kleunen, proved to be a burden all night for Wayne (25-2). The Marquette signee went on to finish with 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Fellow post, Mariah Campbell, scored seven and had a game-high eight rebounds. The Comets were led in scoring by Sammie Puisis. The freshman guard scored a team-high 16 points.

The Comets took the lead early and never offered Wayne much of a chance to come back. Mason led 19-13 after the first quarter and held a 26-21 lead at halftime. The third-quarter onslaught finished any real hope of a Warrior comeback.

The Comets now advance to the "Great 8" (OHSAA Regional Championship) for the first time since 2012 (lost to Kettering Fairmont). Mason will have their third shot at knocking off Greater Miami Conference rival, Lakota West, this season. The Comets fell to the Firebirds 58-49 on 11/24 and 54-46 on January 9.

West (26-1), the defending Division I state champions, and Mason (24-2) finished the regular season ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the final Enquirer Div. I poll. The two teams finished the season ranked No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in the final AP state poll. West's only loss this season was to Wayne.

Game time is set for 7:00 at Kettering Fairmont HS Trent Arena. The winner earns a berth in the State Final Four on Friday, March 11th at OSU's Schottenstein Center against either Canton McKinley (22-3) or Solon (17-8).

COMETS RETURN TO THE STATE FINAL FOUR!

2015-16 Regional Champions!!

After losing twice to Lakota West in the regular season this year, the "third time was the charm" for the Mason Girls on Saturday night at Kettering. The Comets claimed their first Regional Title since 2000, upseting the defending State Champions 49-30, propelling them to the State Final Four.

Senior forward Lauren Van Kluenen scored a game-high 19 points for Mason (25-2), but never trailed after senior forward Mariah Campbell sank two free throws for a 13-11 lead with 53.2 seconds left in the first quarter.

Defensively, Mason’s energetic 2-3 zone stopped Lakota West’s dribble penetration, which kept the Firebirds from collapsing the defense and kicking out for open 3-pointers. Lakota West shot just 25.5 percent from the field and made just 1-of-13 3-pointers while setting a season low for scoring.

Mason led by as many as 11 points in the first half behind Van Kluenen’s 10 points, which ended with Mason leading, 26-18.

Mason took advantage of a Lakota West scoring drought that lasted more than five minutes to open up a 37-21 third-quarter lead. Van Kluenen scored Mason’s last seven points of the quarter, which ended with the Comets leading, 37-23.

The Comets led by 21 points twice in the fourth quarter and effectively ended any chance of a Firebird comeback.

Mason (25-2). who finished the season ranked second in the Enquirer’s Division I coaches’ poll and fifth in the Associated Press Division I statewide poll is making their fourth trip to the state semifinals and first since winning the state championship in 2000. They play unranked Solon (18-8) in a state semifinal scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on Friday at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus.

Mason beat Solon – also named the Comets – 57-39 on November 28.The state final is scheduled to be played on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the same site.

STATE Semi-Final

vs. Solon

OSU Schottenstein Center, 8:00

won 48-31 26-2

MASON ADVANCES TO STATE FINAL

For the first time since the 2000 season, the Mason girls basketball team advanced to the State Championship game by defeating Solon the second time this season, by a score of 48-31. Freshman Sammie Puisis scored a career-high 21 points and Jailyn Mason added 10 as Mason led by as many as 19 points in the fourth quarter on its way to a third appearance in the state championship.

Puisis’s contributions were timely as Solon focused on corralling Mason senior Lauren Van Kluenen, who finished with six points and a team-high seven rebounds at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. Mason’s aggressive zone defense limited Solon to 21.1 percent shooting (8-for-38).

Mason led by 16 points, 34-18, with 3:07 left in the third quarter before Solon put together a 9-0 run and had the ball with a chance to cut Mason’s lead to five going into the fourth quarter, but Solon turned the ball over and 6-foot sophomore Tihanna Fulton converted a putback at the buzzer to give Mason a 36-27 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Mason (26-2), advanced to play state poll-champion Wadsworth for the state championship on Saturday.

STATE RUNNER UP!

The Mason Girls Basketball team fell in the State Championship game on Saturday, 60-51 to Wadsworth, before a crowd of 4,783 at OSU's Schottenstein Center. The Comets fell behind early and were down as many as 16 point is the contest before a 4th quarter rally fell short.

Mason (26-3) was seeking its second state championship and first since 2000 in its fourth trip to the state tournament. The Comets, who finished the season ranked fifth in the Associated Press Division I statewide poll, had beaten No. 4 Huber Heights Wayne, third-ranked Lakota West and unranked Solon by an average of 19 points in their last three games to reach the finals.

Everything that went wrong in the first half for Mason (who never led in the game) went right for Wadsworth, starting with a layup on a scripted play off the opening tip just five seconds into the game. The Grizzlies jumped out to a 10-0 lead, and Mason didn’t connect from the field until Lauren Van Kluenen’s putback with 3:06 left in the first quarter.

In the first half, Wadsworth shot a blistering 55 percent from the field (11-of-20), while the Comets managed just 27.8 percent (5-of-18), including 0-for-7 on 3-pointers. The Grizzlies made three of their five 3-pointers.

Mason didn’t help itself at the free throw either, going 4-for-9 and missing the front end of three bonus situations. The Grizzlies went 5-for-5, helping them lead, 30-14 by halftime.

The Comets regrouped after halftime. Arkansas recruit, senior Jailyn Mason, sat out much of the first half with foul trouble. She scored six points and freshman Sammie Puisis added five as Mason cut Wadsworth’s lead to 37-30 going into the fourth quarter.

Lauren Van Kleunen, a Marquette signee, cut the Wadsworth lead again - this time to 45-42 with 4:33 left in the game. Her free throws 34 seconds later put the Comets within reach again at 47-44. Mason sophomore Anna Brinkmann also played a key role in helping the Comets’ attempted comeback. Her bucket cut the lead to 53-50 with 2:14 left.

Unfortunately, the Comets ran out of time in the final two minutes and were forced to foul. The Grizzlies shut down any further attempt by Mason to get any closer, continuing to make free throw after throw, which ultimately was a key stat in ghe game. Wadsworth shot 24 of 27 from the free-throw line. Mason was 14 of 23 from the line.

The Comet girls will be remembered as one of the finest teams in Mason basketball history. Their 26 wins this season ties the record for 2nd most wins in a season (98-99 team 26-1). The girls finished 2nd in the GMC, along with being the State Runner Up. The team was Sectional, District, and Regional Champions.

THANK YOU PLAYERS AND COACHES FOR A SEASON TO REMEMBER!

1/13 at Lebanon lost 2989-2592 6-4 2-2

Mason boys bowlers struggled a bit with their shot on Wednesday vs. Lebanon falling 2989-2592. They worked hard to have a good first round 930 and an even better second round of 975. Normally a 1905 would still keep you close but Lebanon was on fire. They had an 1114, and a 1090- putting us 300 pins behind. There were 2 bright spots this week, Evan Haas had high series of 440, and David Neal just behind with a 438.

1/23 at Crusader Challenge

This past Saturday the freshman and sophomore Crusader challenge was at Crossgate Lanes. Evan Haas was announced at the introductions as the only returning member from the all tournament team from last year, (high score). He did not disappoint as he managed to be the top scorer in the tourney again this year. His 2 game 508 was nearly 20 pins higher than the next closest bowler. The team also bowled much better than last year earning them a spot in the championship round next to Oak Hills. It was a good battle but the Comets came in second to Oak Hills.

Merritt Rolls Perfect Game!

Mason's Sean Merritt accomplished the ultimate feat for a bowler on Wednesday, rolling a perfect 300 game against Reading at Crossgate Lanes. He is the second Comet this season to accomplish perfection. Bradon Sauer bowled a perfect game against St. Xavier back on November 30th.

Merritt's 300 came in the first game and he followed it up with a 255 in the 2nd game of the day for an amazing 555 series. Evan Haas also had a great day managing to throw 21 strikes in his 2 games and bowled 4 pins better than Merritt with a 559 series.

If that wasn't enough, every Mason starter bowled over a 400 series and set a school match record of 3174 pins. The former record was 3113. The Comets defeated Reading by a final score of 3174-1865.

The best in the city over the last 10 years was the 3174 that the boys bowled against Reading over a week ago. On Monday, they set another record by throwing the second best score in the city. Highly notable scores were Evan Haas's 507, and David Neal's 491.
