The Mason Comets opened their cross country season at the OHSAA Early Season Invitational on Saturday, August 15th.

Running on the same course as the state meet in November, the Comets became familiar with the course where they dream to compete in November. They finished a respectable 4th with Thomas Worthington High School winning. Mason's first finisher was Senior Alan Gordillo in 16:33. He was followed closely by his Senior classmates, Ray Berling, Jakob Mueller, Justin Koehler and Jake Bauer.

Mason's varsity will return to action on August 28th at the Moeller Invitational on the Kings Island Golf Course.

The Mason Boys Cross Country Team competed in the Moeller Prime Time Invitational for the first time on Friday night. With the JV/Open race being run at twilight and the varsity race under the lights, the meet afforded a unique experience for the Comet harriers. It also turned out to be a great night of success for the team.

After dominating the JV/Open race, the varsity toed the starting line. They started well and improved their position so that by the half way point in the race it was clear that the Comets were intent on winning. Like Comets should, they blazed through the darkness to victory. The #2 Comets took down #4 in Ohio Olentangy Orange and #10 rival St. Xavier in convincing fashion. Mason totaled 55 with St. X an 82 and Orange at 91.

Senior Ray Berling led the charge for the Comets nailing down the 6th place overall. Strong pack running ensued as the next four Comets finished within 13 seconds of each other. This included Alan Gordillo, Jake Bauer, Justin Koehler and Michael Uematsu. Displacers were Mikey Loehr and George Bulger.

The varsity Comets will devote the next two weeks to preparation for the Mason Invitational on September 12th.

Comet Men Sweep Mason CC Invite!

The 41st annual Mason Cross Country Invitational may have been the best ever for the Comet Boys CC Team this past Saturday. The weather was perfect, the course phenomenal, and the parent boosters were superb. The Creek Cam was off the charts! Not to be outdone by the festival of cross country, the Comets raced to victory in the varsity race and both reserve races.

Taking on #6 in Ohio, Dublin Coffman, among many other fine teams,Mason ran over the hay bales, through the creeks and up the hills to a solid 34 point victory. The Comets ran in an incredibly tight pack finishing with only 19 seconds between their first and sixth man.

Leading the way was Alan Gordillo, followed by Jake Bauer, Ray Berling, Justin Koehler, Jakob Bauer, Michael Uematsu and George Bulger.

Mason hits the road next Saturday to compete in the prestigious Louisville Trinity Invitational.

Boys CC Earns Highest Finish at KY Meet!

The Mason Comets journeyed south of the Ohio River to compete in the prestigious Louisville Trinity Valkyrie Invitational on Saturday. The meet featured top teams form six states. The Comets were tested by the best and came out in fine fashion finishing 4th - their highest finish ever at this meet.

Continuing the revolving door of who ends up first man, Justin Koehler took the honors for Mason finishing 27th overall. In four varsity meets so far this year, Mason has had three different top runners. Rounding out the scoring for the Comets was Jake Bauer, Ray Berling, Michael Uematsu and Jakob Mueller.

The Comets travel to northern Indiana next weekend for the Culver Invitational. The boys are ranked #1 in the city and #2 in the state polls.

The Mason Cross Country Comets made their annual trek to northern Indiana for the Culver Invitational at the Culver Military Academy this past Saturday. The Comets continued their extraordinary pack running, using the power of the pack to finish runner up in this prestigious meet. This is Mason's highest finish ever at this meet. A 17-second 1-5 runner spread sealed the deal for the Comets.

Top runner for Mason was Justin Koehler for the second week in a row. He was followed by scorers Jake Bauer, Alan Gordillo, Jakob Mueller and Ray Berling.

The Comets head to the St. Xavier Invitational next Saturday.

Boys CC 2nd at St. Xavier

The Mason Boy's CC team competed in the St.Xavier Invitational on Saturday. The Comets held out a number of the top varsity runners to prepare them for future meets. The Mason second wave stepped up big and garnered a second place finish defeating Lebanon. Host St. Xavier was the overall champion of the event.

Top finisher was junior Mike Loehr coming in sixth place. He was followed closely by senior Matt Welage, junior Tony Rabe, sophomore Abel Nijakowski, and junior George Bulger. Once again, the Comets displayed solid pack running with a 29 second 1 to 5 split.

The Comets' next competition will be Oct 17th at the GMC Championships at Voice of America Park.

BOYS CC WINS GMC AGAIN!

The Mason's Boys Cross Country team returned to the top of the leauge podium winning their fifth GMC title in the past six years on Saturday at Voice of America Park. The Comets scored 31 points to beat second place Sycamore by 39 points. The day was a fast one with all seven Mason varsity runners tying or surpassing their personal records.

Jacob Bauer was Mason's fourth different first man this year attesting to the tight pack of the Comets. The senior also ran the third fastest time in Mason High School history in 15:38. Senior Justin Koehler became the fifth fastest in Mason history recording 15:46. Third man for Mason was Senior Ray Berling who was followed by Sophomore sensation Michael Uematsu, Junior Mikey Loehr, Junior George Bulger and Senior Jakob Mueller.

The Comets begin the state rounds next Saturday at the District Championships back at VOA Park. The top four (4) teams in each race will qualify for the Regionals. The top sixteen (16) runners in each race advance to Regionals. Mason will be looking to win their 8 consecutive District title and another trip to the Regional Meet on Saturday, Octboer 31st.

District Belongs To Boys CC Again

The Mason Boys Cross Country team journeyed to nearby VOA park for the second week in a row. This time it was to win their 8th consecutive District Championship. The win qualifies them for next week's Regional Championships.

Mason scored 30 points to second place Sycamore's 55. Comet scorers ran in a tight pack with a 16 second spread. Jacob Bauer was first man again this week. He was followed in order by Mikey Loehr, Justin Koehler, Jakob Mueller, Ray Berling, Matt Welage and Alan Gordillo. Loehr and Mueller ignored the inclement weather to run their lifetime best times.

The Regional Championships will be held in Troy, Ohio next Saturday. The top 4 teams and top 16 indviduals will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 7th at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

The boys will be seekiing to defend their title of a year ago and win the programs third overall Regional Championship. If the boys advance it would be their 9th consecutive trip to State and provide them the opportunity to defend their 2014 State Title.

BOYS CC REGIONAL CHAMPS!

Last Saturday, the Mason Boys Cross Country Team journeyed to the banks of the Great Miami River in Troy, Ohio for the Southwest Regional Championships. The Comet Harriers punched their ticket to their ninth consecutive trip to the state championship by winning in convincing fashion by a margin of 35 to 62 over rival St. Xavier. The win was the programs third overall Regional title.

The Comets used the same strategy they had all season - getting out strong and running in a tight pack. This time their 1-5 spread was 18 seconds. Attesting to their strength six of the seven runners would have qualified as individuals had the team not qualified. The Comets were led once again by senior Jake Bauer, followed closing in the scoring by Ray Berling, Justin Koehler, Mikey Loehr and Tony Rabe. Rabe had been pressed into service at the last minute due to an illness of another runner. Other finishers for Mason were Michael Uematsu and George Bulger.

The Comets take their spikes to Hebron, Ohio next Saturday for the state championship with hopes of a podium finish and a possible second straight State title and third overall.

Boys CC State Runner Up!

The Mason Boys Cross Country team made the most of the their ninth consecutive trip to the State CC Championships last Saturday, finishing 2nd overall to Cleveland St. Ignatius.

Taking on the #10 team in the country, the Comets mixed it up with the best and came home with the silver trophy. Once again demonstrating a great team effort without any superstars, they ran to a 21 second 1-5 split and kept third place Solon at bay.

Justin Koehler was Mason's top finisher and had the privilege of receiving the runner up trophy. Koehler was closely followed by senior Jake Bauer, senior Ray Berling, junior Mikey Loehr, sophomore Michael Uematsu, junior Tony Rabe and senior Jakob Mueller. Senior Matt Welage and junior George Bulger served as very able alternates.

This marks the third time in four years the Comets have been on the podium at State. After losing their 1, 2, 5 and 7 men from last year's championship team, it is quite a feat to once again hoist a trophy at the state championships.

Congratulations to all 130 team members and their coaches who played a role in making their team state runners up in 2015.

The Mason girl's CC team competed on Saturday, August 15 at the OHSAA Pre-Season Invitational at National Trail Raceway. The Comets finished 3rd overall behind Centerville and Hilliard Davidson.

The team traveled North on Saturday, Aug. 15th to the State XC course at National Trails raceway. The course was in good shape, albeit bumpy, and they girls did well. The team was met with a juggernaut Centerville team and a solid Hilliard team as well.

Overall, the Comets placed 3rd and looked solid in the process. The team was led by Maegan Murphy up front with Ellie Brush not far behind. Ailee Henderson did well as did Leah Ford and Lauren Rose. The Comets recevied great production out of Freshman Lilly Hallum and Natalie Nye as well.

The girls looks to be coming together nicely and should be poised to do well this season. Mason returns a solid crew from last year’s state runner up team and are hopeful that they can find a few newbies to fill the holes left by graduation.

Mason will participate in a split squad CC event at Sycamore on Monday, August 24th.

The girls CC team of Mason ran at the Moeller “Primetime” Invitational at King’s Island Golf Course this past Friday. It was a meet under the lights and they put on quite a show. The girls ran “lights out” and put up great numbers including a 19:17 team average time and a very nice low score of 35 to take 1st place honors.

The Comets were led by Ellie Brush who broke 19:00 and ran great. She was battling up front with a nice pack and pulled away in the end for a solid 2nd place with a great sprint to the line. Ellie ran one of her better times as she has only been under the 19:00 minute mark a handful of times in her career.

Not too far behind her was Ailee Henderson, who also ran great, and placed in the top 10 along with her teammates, Murphy and Rose. The girls had quite a nice pack rolling up front and crushed Beavercreek who was a good bit behind the Comets. The girls also got great production out of Leah Ford who had her best race in over a year, and freshman Lily Hallum was solid as well.

The girls looked great and are primed for a great fall. They will be off next weekend as they prepare themselves for the home meet, the annual Mason Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12th.

Mason Girls CC Wins at Comet Invite

The Mason Invite was as epic as ever with 3400+ runners, 100+ teams and lots of fun. The annual Mason Invitational this past Saturday included a T.V. giveaway, live streaming video and a drone taking video. With all of the hype and fanfare the girls were still able to pull out a first place finish. The win was resounding over a strong Alter team, and some other local favorites.

The team was led by Maegan Murphy who ran to her best ever course time and 4th place overall. Not far behind her was Ellie Brush, who ran well and muddled her way through this tough course. The team saw great production again from Ailee Henderson who is always steady. The big surprise of the day was Freshman Natalie Nye. Nye who was 15th on the depth chart just weeks ago ran to a 4th spot on the team and a sub 20:00 effort.

Our last scorer of the day was Leah Ford. Leah worked hard after a slight spill in the creek, but rallied and did well in the last K to secure our final score to put together a nice low score of 42 points.

The girls looked great on the B team as well, with many girls breaking 21:00, and many moving up nicely from their previous best times. It was a great day, and a very strong showing from this mostly young team with loads of talent.

Next Saturday the Mason Girls will compete at the Louisville Trinity Invitational.

Comet Girls CC 2nd At Louisville!

This past Saturday the Mason Girls XC team traveled with their top runners to the Trinity Invite in Louisville. This meet is huge with nearly 5000 runners from 5-6 states. The top team on the day was Carmel Indiana (Ranked #2 in the US) but beyond that the Comets held their own. At the end of the day, the Comet squad took 2nd and looked strong in the process.

The team was led by Maegan Murphy who ran to a top 20 finish, then not too far back was Ellie Brush. The key on the day was the duo of Ailee Henderson and Leah Ford who mixed it up in the top 30 and ran to strong finishes.

The key in cross country is a strong core of 5. This year continues to be a work in progress for the team. Our 5th runner had a gap of nearly 1 minute from our 4th, which hurt us in the team scoring, but our 3-4 ran great, so that is hard to do.

The young duo of Freshman, Nye and Hallum are coming along and they did well in this loaded field of state champions, and top notch runners. The girls also saw great production from a number of other runners.

The Comets travel to northern Indiana next weekend for the Culver Invitational. The girls are ranked #1 in the city and #2 in the state polls.

The Girls CC Team traveled to Culver this weekend and did quite well. The team was led by Maegan Murphy who ran to a solid 6th place overall. Leah Ford came up big with a huge day, and a solid place putting her in the top 25 overall. Just behind Leah was Ellie Brush who rallied after struggling a bit and ran to a top 25 finish as well.

Our 4th runner on the day was Ailee Henderson who always makes a great effort and consistently scores for the Comets. Our final scorer on the day was Natalie Nye, the Freshman who continues to impress.

The front 5 of this team are quite solid and were able to put us into a 3rd place finish behind national powerhouses, Carmel and Columbus North. The team score was relatively low for this large meet and our team average time was one of our better averages on this Culver course.

The JV squad also did very well as they scored a perfect score of 15 in their race later in the day. The top runner in that race was freshman Madison Pirkey who ran well and would have been right with our varsity top 7 with her time.

Next up for the girl's team is the St. Xavier Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Mason Girls Win St. X Invite!

The Mason Girl's CC team ran well at the St. X Invitational on Saturday placing first overall. The Comets had 3 girls in the top 5, and 5 in the top 20 of the varsity race. IF our JV girls were in the varsity race, 2 more would have been in the top 15.

The Mason girls took off hard, and set the tone for the other teams in the race. Maegan Murphy took the lead, and then duked it out with Hartman of Lebanon who eventually won the race with Maegan finishing 2nd overalll.

Behind Maegan was Ellie Brush, who took 3rd overall on this sloppy soft course. Next up was Ailee Henderson who placed 5th. Our next two scorers were Amy Satterthwaite, scoring in her first race of the year, and Lauren Rose, both of whom were in the top 20 overall.

Also notable were our JV girls who took a perfect score of 15, and had two girls with times that would have placed them in the top 5 of the varsity race, and the next 3 who would have been in the top 20.

It was a solid day for the Comets who proved their #1 city ranking, and who look to be putting the pieces together for another run toward the state meet.

The team will be off next Saturday to prepare for the GMC meet, and hope to add another title to the record books. The 2015 GMC Championships will be Saturday, October 17th at VOA.

MASON GIRLS CC PERFECT AT GMC

This Saturday the girls ran in the GMC championships at Voice of America park the team ran very well and claimed their 6th straight league title! The team swept all five of the top individual placings to achieve and amazing perfect score of 15.

The Comets become the first team in girl's GMC CC history to run the table at the conference meet while achieving an all-time record low score.

Maegan Murphy was first overall with a time of 18:22 followed closely by Ellie Brush, Ailee Henderson and Leah Ford. Our fifth and final score of the day to help achieve the perfect score was freshman Lilly Hallum who held off the charging heard trying to break up our perfect score.

It was a great day for the Comets as the team heads into the postseason. On a side note the JV girls also had a perfect score in their race and 6 girls broke 20 minutes. Amazingly, if the JV team had competed in the varsity race, two Mason runners may have possibly reached the podium and done so in a nearly perfect score themselves.

The Comets compete this Saturday at the District Championships back at VOA Park. The top four (4) teams in each race will qualify for the Regionals. The top sixteen (16) runners in each race advance to Regionals. The ladies will be looking to win their 7 consecutive District title and another trip to the Regional Meet on Saturday, Octboer 31st.

Girls CC Continues To Dominate District

Saturday at the District Championships at Voice of America, Mason won the girl's 7th consecutive title running very well. They were led by Distirct leader Maegan Murphy (18:41.1) and then followed not far behind by Ellie Brush (19:13.0). The teams closest competition was far back however they gave us a good fight and broke up our hopeful perfect score..

The runners were buffeted by high winds but were able to run the course well and score only 20 points, just off of our goal of 15. The big performance of the day was Lauren Rose 19:19.4). Lauren ran an outstanding race and pushed the pace, putting herself in the three spot for our team. After Lauren, closely behind her was Ailee Henderson (19.22.9) who always runs tough and our fifth and final score was the freshman Lily Hallum (19:24.2).

Next Saturday the girls cc team will be looking for their 7th Regional Title in a row and 12 straight years qualifying for the state meet as they position themselves for a possible State Championship. The top 4 teams and top 16 indviduals will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 7th at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio

Regional Runnerup!

On Saturday in Troy, Ohio the Mason Girls CC Team ran well and were able to qualify to the state meet for the 12th year in a row. The team placed second behind an outstanding Centerville team and looked good doing so.

The team was led by making Maegan Murphy who placed 6th overall. Centerville was ranked top 10 in America so the girls knew they had a big challenge but they ran tough and stayed relatively close.

Maegan had a great crew right behind her including new freshmen superstar Lily Hallum who was our second scorer. Lilly ran to a personal best time and had Ellie Brush just behind her. The team scored well with Ailee Henderson very close behind and rounding our fifth place scorer was Amy Satterthwaite who ran to a new best time.

"We are encouraged about our trip to Columbus next week and hopeful we can get even closer to Centerville and maybe take home a trophy," said Mason head coach Chip Dobson.

The Comets will vye for their third overall state championship next Saturday, Nov. 7 at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. The Comets finished 2nd overall at State in 2014.

Mason Girls CC 3rd At State

The Mason Girls CC Team had another successful season. Placing 3rd at the State XC meet is a great day! The team was trying to be on the podium, but fell just a little short behind a powerful Centerville team that finished 1st overall. This season the team won GMC and District titles and were also Regional runner up.

The State CC meet is always a tough event. It gets out super fast, then girls claw their way through the 2nd mile, and struggle home. That is roughly how the day went for the Comets. The girls were in 2nd at the mile, 2nd at the 2 mile and just slipped into 3rd by the last few hundred meters.

Maegan Murphy was once again our front runner and placed on the individual podium in 15th place. She was followed by Ellie Brush who placed 27th, exactly like last year. Freshman Lily Hallum was Mason's 3rd runner. She was followed by Senior Leah Ford and our next Freshman, Natalie Nye, was our 5th and final scorer on the day.

The girls had a great season! We are all very proud of their efforts and accomplishments in 2015.

Comets Outlast Panthers

The 2015 Mason Football team earned a season opening 24-17 win at Springboro this past Friday. The Comets held off a late game Panther surge to grab a road victory before a huge turnout of fans.

Springboro got on the board first with a TD at 2:25 in the 1st quarter. Mason tied it up in the 2nd quarter on an exciting 71 yard TD run from Bryson White. White led all rushers on the evening with 162 yards on 17 carries.

Mason's Preston Hutchinson scored on a 1-yard dive with 3:50 left in the half to give the Comets a lead. Hutchinson finished 5 of 8 passing on the night for 77 yards. Springboro got a 29-yard field goal to draw to 14-10 going into the break.

The Boro's came out swinging in the 2nd half, taking a 17-14 lead at the 1:53 mark in the 3rd quarter. It was all Mason in the final frame as the Comets Ben Fago rushed 23 yards with 8:27 remaing to put Mason back up for good. Grant Kramer added a 29 yard field goal with 2:17 left. The Mason defense came up with a big interception in the final seconds by Ty Sponseller to hold off the Panthers and leave Springboro with their first win of the season.

Next Mason will host Upper Arlington this Friday on Hall of Fame Night at Dwire Field. The Comet Athletic department will recognize the 2015 HOF induction class at halftime.

PLEASE NOTE....This contest has a scheduled kick-off time of 7:30 PM. The remaining 2015 home and away start times will be 7:00 PM.

COMETS SUFFER LOSS TO UA

The Mason football team endured a Friday night weather cancellation and then another delay when the contest was rescheduled on Saturday. They were able to outlast the weather but not a determined Upper Arlington team that was abale to mount a 4th quarter surge and defeat the Comets by a final score of 24-21.

After falling behind 17-14 in the third quarter, Mason got a Bryson White 10-yard TD rush to claim a 21-17 advantage with 9:50 remaining. UA was able to regain the lead at the 4:49 mark to win the game.

The Comets led 14-3 late in 2nd quarter but saw UA score a TD with seconds to go in the first half. Halftime score was 14-10 Mason.. Cameron Quallen plunged 2 yards for a Mason score in the 2nd quarter. Kyle Lamotte caught a Hutchinson 10-yard TD pass for another Mason TD

Matt Sora led all Mason running backs with 113 yards on 8 carries. QB Preston Hutchinson was 5/9 for 43 yards.

The Comets (1-1) will visit Winton Woods next Friday night for their final non-conference game before entertaining GMC play the following week versus Colerain.

Comback Comets!

The Mason Football team showed resilience, poise and determination in a classic come-from-behind win this past weekend. Mason senior Nick Pearson returned a kickoff 81 yards to snap a tie and Jeron Besecker sealed it with a 55 yard interception return as the Mason Comets beat Winton Woods 41-27 Friday night.

The Warriors (1-2) had taken a 21-0 lead 10 seconds into the second quarter and things didn't look good. The Comets took advantage of Winton Woods' overpursuit as Preston Hutchinson hit scatback Bryson White with a misdirection swing pass out of the backfield. White went down the sidelines untouched as the Comets cut the lead to 21-7 midway through the second quarter. The play awakened the Comets as the defense then used its discipline and size advantage to shut down Winton Woods.

The Comets cut the Winton Woods lead to 21-14 at the half after a key Winton Woods facemask on a third-and 12 play set up Matt Sora's 24 yard TD run.

Pearson tied the game on a sensational interception return off a WW players backside, returning the pass before it hit the ground. Grant Kramer's PAT tied the game at 21 with 9:02 left in the third quarter. The two teams exchanged TDs, with James Grace scoring for Mason and Lumpkin scoring his third TD for the Warriors to keep the game tied at 27. Both teams missed their respective PAT. That set the stage for Pearson's heroics. Jeron Besecker scored the final Mason points with a 53-yard interception with 4:53 remaining.

The Comets head into GMC play next Friday against GMC stalwart Colerain with a record of 2-1. Kick off is set for 7:00 PM at Dwire Field. Friday night is Bicentennial Tailgagte night. The City of Mason will team up with MHS Athletics to help kick off Mason’s Bicentennial Celebration Weekend. Enjoy food and games in the High School parking lot before the game. A huge crowed is expected.

The Mason Football team took on one of the city and states annual powerhouses on Friday night. Colerain and Mason played before a packed house at Atrium Stadium with the Comets falling 21-7. Mason battled the Cardinals and kept their potent offense at bay most of the night while the offense made the Colerain defense show up and play.

Mason held Colerain to a 7-0 adavantage after the first half. The Comet defense continued to shut down the Cardinals after the break. Then, late in the 3rd quarter, the Mason offense came alive and finished a drive with a Matt Sora rush into the end zone to tie the game 7-7. Colerain responed with a TD of their own at 10:01 to retake the lead 14-7. Mason was unable to keep a drive alive midway thru the final quarter and turned the ball over on downs deep in their own territory. The Cardinals took advantage of the field position and scored the final TD of the game.

Bryson White led Mason with 74 yards russhing on 10 carries. Mason's defense did a good job holding Colerain to just under 290 yards of offense on the evening. The Comets record evens at 2-2.

Mason will visit the 4-0 Fairfield Indians next Friday. Kick off is 7:00 PM.

Comets Shock Indians!

The Mason Football team shutout previously beaten Fairfield Friday night by a score of 13-0 The Indians were ranked a lofty #3 in the state polls and #4 in the city. Fairfield struggled offensively after losing their starting quarterback to a knee injury on the 2nd play of the game. The Comet defense had a big night holding Fairfield to just 2 first downs and 63 total yards.

Twice Mason set the Indians up deep in Comet territory, and twice the Indians came away empty. Fairfield had the ball on the Mason 20 in the first half of a scoreless game, but fumbled at the 17. Trailing 13-0 late in the fourth, the Indians turned the ball over on downs at the 20.

The Mason offense churned out 304 yards and 15 first downs, almost splitting things down the middle with 151 coming on the ground and 153 in the air. The Comets scored with 41 ticks left in the first half on a bubble screen to Bryson White from Preston Hutchinson that went for 58 yards and a Mason lead. The Comets scored again with 5:51 left in the third, on a 34-yard jaunt by White, for a 13-0 lead.

This Friday night is homecoming at Atrium Stadium. Mason (3-2) will host GMC rival Lakota East (3-2) who fell 35-31 to Sycamore last week. Join the students and alumni of MHS in the celebratation with traditional festivities taking place at halftime. Kick off is slated for 7:00 pm.

Mason Beats East in Homecoming Romp

The Mason Football team defeated crosstown rival Lakota East 28-7 on a miserable weather night, but before a large group of faithful Comet fans on 2015 homecoming night. The Thunderhawks were never in this one as Mason built a 28-0 lead late into the final quarter.

Mason running backs Bryson White and Matt Sora produced solid individual efforts on the evening to help the Comet offense to a 321-177 total yard advantage. White finished with 132 yards including an electrifying 93-yard TD run in the 2nd half. Matt Sora scored twice on the night and rushed for 72 yards. Michael Kopaygorodsky finished with a 100 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Mason goes to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the GMC. They will visit Princeton this coming Friday. The Vikings lost to Sycamore last Friday, 33-14 and are 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the league.

COMETS BLANK VIKINGS!

The Comet offense scored 17 first half points and then the Big Green defense made it stand up the rest of the way as Mason shut out Princeton 17-0 last Friday night.

Kicker Grant Kramer got the Comets on the board with 1 minute remaining in the first quarter with a 33-yard field goal to make it 3-0. Michael Kopaygorodsky made it 10-0 Mason on a 15-yard rush in the 2nd quarter. After recovering an onside kick Matt Sora rushed 1-yard with 8:27 remaining in the half for another Mason TD concluding all the scoring on the evening for both teams. The Comets had other offensive chances in the 2nd half but it was all about the Mason defense who limited the Vikings to just 136 total yards on the evening.

Kopaygorodsky finished with 67 yards on the ground and Sora 63 yards. Preston Huchinson was 10/17 passing for 82 yards. On defense Alex King notched 9 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Mason goes to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the GMC (2nd place). They will host Oak Hills this Friday night. The Highlanders are 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the league. They fell to Sycamore last week in a scoring slugfest by a score of 78-50.

Mason Powers Past Oak Hills

The Comet Football team continued their winning ways last Friday with a 42-17 romp over visiting Oak Hills. The win was the teams 4th in a row and sends their record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 (2nd) in the GMC. The Highanders got on the board first with a 39-yard field goal. From there it was all Mason as the Comets scored 42 unanswered points. Oak Hills managed two late scores in the fourth quarter.

Mason out gained Oak Hills 467-266 in total yardage on the evening. The Comets rushed for 394 of those yards on the ground. QB Preston Hutchinson was 6/6 passing and two TD's. Bryson White had a monster game statistically, rushing for 203 yards and 3 TD's. Matt Sora rushed for a TD and caught for TD. Alex King was on the receiving end of Hutchinson's other TD pass. Michael Kopaygorodsky rushed for 86 yards on the night.

The Mason Football team (#3 in the city) is ranked #6 in the lastest post season polls in Division 1 Region 2. The top 16 teams at the end of the regular season will qualify for the OHSAA playoffs. Tonight the team wil visit Middletown (3-5, 2-3). The Middies defeated Sycamore 42-17 last week.

Miracle at Middletown!

The Mason Football team escaped and survived a scare against Middletown last Friday, winning in overtime by a final score of 24-21. It took some last second, heroic efforts by the Comets to avoid the upset.

Mason jumped to a 7-0 lead, scoring on its first drive, but Middletown answered on a 2-yard run on the first play of the second quarter to tie the game.

The Middies took advantage of an interception to take a 10-7 lead at the break on a Middie 43-yard FG. Middletown led 13-7 early in the fourth quarter. Mason answered on a 2-yard run by Matt Sora to take a 14-13 lead with 9:27 remaining, but the Middies answered right back.

Middletown took a 21-14 lead with 5:04 on an 81-yard pass play and then a two-point conversion.Mason had one last shot, starting at its own 23. The Comets moved the ball to midfield with one minute remaining, then kept their drive alive when Preston Hutchinson connected with Nick Pearson for a 25-yard gain on fourth-and-19. Two plays later, the duo connected again for a 25-yard scoring pass and a 21-21 tie with 0:36 left.

Middletown had the ball first in overtime, but Mason blocked a 33-yard field-goal attempt before winning it on a 35-yarder by Grant Kramer.

The Middies held Mason to 14 yards rushing in the first half and 51 total, but the Comets finished with 240. Mason finished with more yards passing (128) than rushing (112) for the first time. Middletown finished with 321 yards in total offense.

The Comets (7-2, 5-1) will host Sycamore on senior night this coming Friday. The Aves (4-5, 3-3) fell to Lakota West last week 38-36. The Comets were ranked #6 in last weeks playoff rankings. The top 16 teams will advance to the post season.

Mason will be seeking to return to the OHSAA playoffs for the first time since 2011 with a season ending win. Mason finds themselves in the same positon as they were last year for game 10 when the Aves ended their the Comets season with 36-0 shutout and denied them an opportunity to make the playoffs.

COMETS PLAYOFF BOUND!

On Friiday night, the Mason defense held off a Sycamore last second score to secure a home field playoff game by defeating the Aves 22-18. Mason had pushed ahead in the contest on a Matt Sora 2-yard rush with approx. 3 mintues remaining in the fourth quarter. The Aves attempt to win the game from the Mason 3-yard fell short as time expired.

Earlier in the game, Sora scored on another 2-yard rush that gave the Comets a 15-7 advantage and the lead at half time. The Aves scored the next 11 points to hold a 18-15 advantage midway thru the 4th quarter.

QB Preston Hutchinson had a big game completing 10-10 passes for 186 yards including a 28 yard toss to Nick Pearson in the 2nd quarter.

Mason advances to the postseason for the first time since 2011. The Comets lost their 1st round game that season to St. Xavier 17-6. It had been 7 years before that (2004) when the Comets last appeared in the postseason.

Mason (8-2, #6 seed) will host a familiar foe in Springboro HS (8-2, 11th seed) next Saturday, Nov. 7th at Atrium Stadium. The Comerts defeated Boro 24-17 the first game in the regular season.

vs. Springboro

Football Team Falls To Springboro

The 2015 Mason Football season will be one to be remembered as their season came to an end with a 42-21 loss to Springboro in the first round of the Division 1 OHSAA playoffs. The team played before a huge home field crowd at Atrium Stadium on Saturday night. The Comets conclude their season with an overall record of 8-3 and 6-1 in the GMC (2nd place). Mason was making its seventh playoff appearance and first since 2011 when it lost to St. Xavier.

Coming into the gamel. Mason’s defense allowed fewer than 13 points per game this season and was ranked 2nd in the GMC. Big plays on special teams highlighted the first half.

Mason attempted a fake punt on its opening possession, but a Panthers defensive lineman tackled them short. Moments later, Mason senior Jeron Besecker had a 43-yard punt return to give the Comets possession at the Panthers’ 30. But, Grant Kramer’s 45-yard field goal attempt fell short.

Springboro recovered a Mason muffed punt and the Panthers took advantage and connected for an eight-yard TD making the score 7-0. In the second quarter, the Panthers blocked a punt giving them the ball at the Mason 33. Mason did them one better later in the quarter when senior Andrew Bores blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt. Senior Ty Sponseller scooped up the ball and sprinted 91 yards to a touchdown tying the score 7-7.

Springboro appeared unfazed, driving for its second TD on a 17-yard pass to make the score 14-7, which was the score at the half. In the 2nd half Springboro came out firing. The Panthers increased its lead to 21-7 on a pass for 37 yards for a touchdown. Mason stole some momentum with an 81-yard TD pass from Hutchinson to tight end Ben Fago to make the score 21-14.

Springboro answered when their running back raced 36 yards on fourth-and-one making the score 28-14. Hutchinson found senior receiver Nick Pearson for a 20-yard TD making the score 35-21 with 4:08 remaining. Pearson had six catches for 84 yards and a TD. Springboro got another 4th quarter TD and thats how the season ended for the Comets.

Mason competed in the Fairfield Invitational on Monday. August 10th. The team finished 4th with a 335. Vivienne Su finished tenth with an 80.

On Tuesday, August 11th Mason improved their team score to a 328 at Sycamore's Invitational at Walden Ponds. The Comets finished 4th again. Janisa Bondoc won the entire tournament shooting an even par round of 72!

Next up Mason play Fairfield at South Trace on Wednesday, August 19th.

On Thursday, Mason competed against Lakota West and Colerain at Hamilton Elks. The girls hung tough and defeated both teams. All 6 scores were very consistent, but seniors Janisa Bondoc and Carson James led the team. The Comets shot 178 as a team.

Next up for Mason will be Ursuline at O'Bannon Golf Club on Thursday, Aug. 27th.

Mason Girls Golf had their first loss of the season yesterday falling to Ursuline Academy. Mason shot a team score of 178 while Ursuline shot 168. Vivienne Su led the team with a 42. The team is looking forward to getting back to their home course next week at Weatherwax.

Mason Girls Golf had a season best round yesterday at Weatherwax. Mason shot a 157 defeating both Oak Hills (171) and Lakota West (194). Vivienne Su had a career best round shooting a 3-under par round of 33! All players did a great job contributing to the win!

Next up is against Fairfield, Wednesday, Sept. 9th at Grizzley.

Mason Girls Golf had another solid day on Wednesday at the Grizzley Golf Course. Mason defeated Fairfield shooting a 160 while Fairfield was 183. Freshman, Julanna Zhang, earned her first medalist honor by shooting a 38!

Mason Girls Golf had a slow start to Saturday's match against Centerville, however, they improved their scores on the back nine. Mason shot a 351 while Centerville fired a 320. Vivienne Su had the lowest score for the Comets (83). The team is ready to face Weatherwax again on Tuesday and Friday for the GMC's.

The GMC girls' golf tournament will be held at Weatherwax Golf Course on September 22 and 25 starting at 8:30.

Mason Girls Golf has a one-shot lead after Day 1 of GMC's at Weatherwax on Tuesday. Mason is one shot ahead of Sycamore and 23 shots ahead of Oak Hills who is in third place. The team shot a combined score of 337.

Senior, Janisa Bondoc, led the team with a 79 which puts her currently in third place for the tournament. Other team scores were: Vivienne Su (83), Carson James (92), Julanna Zhang (88), Ria Datla (87), Meghan Perrin (89).

The team is looking forward to playing in the final round of the league tourney today. Mason currently leads after the first round. The Comets are striving to win their fourth straight GMC title and 7th overall in the last 9 years since entering the league in 2007.

GIRLS GOLF GMC CHAMPS!!!

The Mason Girls Golf Team won the GMC Golf Tournament for the 4th straight year last Friday at Weatherwax! The Comets were able to hold onto their one stroke lead over Sycamore going into the second day of the tournament to win their seventh league title in the past 9 years.

The ladies won with a combined team score of 673, 4 shots better than Sycamore and 42 shots better than the third place team. All 6 golfers for Mason finished in the top 20 for the tournament.

Janisa Bondoc finished 3rd overall with a 160 (79-81). Other scores for the Comets were Carson James (92-80), Vivienne Su (83-89), Julanna Zhang (88-86), Ria Datla (87-90), and Meghan Perrin (89-90).

Karen Binzel won her 4th straight GMC Coach of the Year honor. Congratulations to all the players and coaches!

Mason competed in the St. Angela Merici Invitational on Saturday. After wining the GMC's the day before, the team never really got the momentum going. The team shot a combined score of 359. Vivienne Su had the team's lowest score of an 88.

The girls are looking ahead to two matches this week against St. Ursula and Lakota West followed up with Sectionals on October 5th at Walden Ponds.

Mason defeated East 172-197 in a dual match at Four Bridges on Thursday. Junior, VIvienne Su, led the team with a 4-over 40.

Mason will begin Sectional play at Walden Ponds on Monday, October 5th. The top four teams and the top four individual low scorers not on a qualifying team will advance to the District Championships at Weatherwax on Thursday, October 15th.

GIRLS GOLF EARNS SECTIONAL TITLE!

Mason Girls Golf defeated 15 teams on Monday at Walden Ponds to achieve a 2015 Sectional Championship. This is the third Sectional title in the last four years for the Comets. Mason shot a combined score of 343. Other qualifying teams were St. Ursula who finished just 2 shots behind Mason, Springboro, and Mercy.

After 9 holes,the girls were in second place by 13 strokes, but had a great back 9, lowering their score by a combined 11 shots, helping to contribute to the win. Vivienne Su led the team with an impressive round of 79. Other Mason scores were: Carson James (86), Julanna Zhang (88), Janisa Bondoc (90), and Ria Datla (90).

The team is looking ahead to the District Tourney that gets underway on Thursday, October 15th at Weatherwax. The top 3 teams and the top 3 individual low scores not on a qualifying team will advance to the State Tournament on October 23-24 at OSU.

Mason Girls Golf had a disappointing end to their season at last Thursday's District Championships at Weatherwax.They weren't able to play well enough to earn a spot in the State Tournament. The top three teams and top three individuals will advance with everyone else concluding their 2015 season.

Mason finished 5th with a 346, 6 shots behind the third place team, Sycamore, who qualified. Centerville was the overall winner with Springboro 2nd.

Mason's Janisa Bondoc fought hard on the back 9 to fall one shot short of qualifying as an individual. Janisa led the team with an 82. The girls finised their season as GMC and Sectional Champs.

The Boys Soccer team got their 2015 season succussfullly underway last Friday night with a 3-0 win at Springboro. Kyle Bramwell, Evan Couchot and Gary Zhao each scored goals in the contest. Joseph Grimes, Couchot and Zhao also had assists. Goalies Drew Grisham and Adam Ward each notched a save and shared the opening season shutout.

The Boys Soccer team tied Lebanon 1-1 on Thursday night. The Comets had several scoring opportunites stopped by the Warrior keeper. Mason's defense limited Lebanon to very few chances but were able to get the games first goal and take a 1-0 lead with approx. 30 minutes remaining in the contest.

Mason tied the game with 9 minutes remaining on a goal from Joseph Grimes off a corner kick scramble in front of the box. The Comet came close on a 35-yard bomb in the last few seconds of the contest that skipped over the top of the goal.

Mason goes to 1-0-1 on the season. They will host Loveland on Saturday, August 29th.

The Mason boy's soccer team headed north this past weekend for matches against two perrenial state powerhouses.

On Saturday, Mason (ranked 4th in the state) tied #1 ranked St. Ignatious (Cleveland) by a score of 1-1. The Comets were down 1-0 in the second half when Bryce Curran drew a foul resulting in a penalty kick. Gary Zhao converted the attempt and tied the score 1-1.

Mason (4-0-2) begins defense of their GMC title this Tuesday at home against last years Regional Runnerup, Lakota East (3-2-1). JV 5:00 and Varsity 7:00 pm.

Mason boy's soccer continued their undefeated season with another GMC rout at Sycamore last night. The Comets tallied a 8-0 win against their GMC rival Aves. See game summary below:

Still Undefeated!

Boys Soccer continued to stay undefeated with 1-0 over Centerville on Saturday. The contest was originally scheduled for September 5th, but was cancelled due to stormy weather. In a defensive battle, Mason scored with just under 5 minutes to play in the game to earn the victory.

The goal came from Bryce Curran after Evan Couchot headed a ball into the penalty area and Bryce finished the 1v1 against the keeper. The shutout was recorded by Drew Grisham with 3 saves.

Mason goes to 8-0-2 on the season and returns to GMC play on Tuesday with a home match versus Princeton.

Defense Puts Up Another Shutout

For the 6th straight game the Mason defense has shutout another opponent. Last night the victim was Colerain, who the Comets blanked 5-0. This was Mason's 9th shutout of the season in 12 contests. The offense has outscored their opponents 42-0 in these games. The team has only given up 3 goals all season.

Next up Mason (11-0-2, 6-0) begins a tough GMC 3-game stretch to conclude the regular season. They will host Fairfield (8-3-3, 4-1-2) on Thursday night. The team will visit West (8-4-1, 4-2) this Saturday and then visit Oak Hills (9-4-1, 4-2-1) next Tuesday. The Comets are the #2 ranked team in the latest state polls and remain #1 in the city.

BOYS SOCCER 2015 GMC CHAMPIONS!

The Mason boy's soccer team shutout Lakota West 4-0 last Saturday night to claim their fourth consecutive GMC Championship. Last season the Comets suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Firebirds, handing the team their first loss in two seasons. With 16 seniors on the Mason varsity, that loss may have still been fresh in the minds of the Comets playing at the West soccer field for the final time in their careers. The final score certainly indicated that there wouldn't be a repeat of last year, as Mason remains undefeated again this season.

Evan Couchot, Gary Zhao, Bryce Curran and Ben Wendell scored goals on the evening. Drew Grisham and Adam Ward combined on the shutout with 4 saves. It was the team's 9th straight blanking of an opponent this season and 12th overall.

The Mason boy's soccer program has now won 6 league titles in the past 9 years since entering the conference in the 2007 season. Their record stands at 13-0-2 overall and 8-0 in the GMC with a final regular season contest at Oak Hills on Tuesday night.

Boys Soccer Completes Another Undefeated Season!

For the 2nd time in the past three years, the Mason Boy's Soccer team has completed the regular season undefeated. The Comets defeated Oak Hills last night 5-0 to run their overall record to 14-0-2 and a perfect 9-0 in the GMC. Mason had already claimed their 6th GMC title over the past weekend.

Of note.....In 2013 the team won their first OHSAA State Championship going undefeated at 22-0-1. In 2014 the Comets lost their only game at the final match of the regular season and finished 15-2-3. Sixteen seniors on this years team have compiled a won-lost record of 69-5-7 over the past 4 years. They have lost only one GMC contest during that span going 34-1-1.

Tuesday night highlights: Senior Evan Couchot led the No.1 ranked Comets with two goals. Seniors Bryce Curran, Joseph Grimes and Kyle Bramwell each scored as well. Mason is again the #2 ranked team in the Division State polls.

BOYS SOCCER MOVES ON IN POST SEASON

The only thing the Comet boy's soccer team didn't achieve in their Sectional Title game versus Milford on Tuesday night was a shutout. Mason cruised past the Eagles 8-1 to advance to the District finals. The contest was pretty much decided by halftime on the sloppy evening. Mason led 5-0 after the first 40 minutes of play. With a Sectional tilte now in hand the Comets set their sights on another District Championship with Springboro.

Next up the Comets will meet Springboro at West Carrollton HS at 7:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 31st. Mason will be seeking its 4th consecutive District Title and 6th overall. The game will be a rematch of the same two teams from last season in which Mason defeated the Panthers 4-0. The Comets already defeated Springboro 3-0 in the first game of this season. The winner will advance to the Regional Semi-Finals and the Sweet Sixteen.

Boys Soccer Advances to Great Eight! Curran Hattrick's The Panthers!

The Mason Boys Soccer team fought off an early Elder offensive attack to rally with 4 unanswered goals and earn a 5-2 victory in last nights Regional Semi-Final match at Sycamore. After five goals were scored in the first 40 minutes of play, the game looked like it would be a shootout between the two programs that had been 1-2 in the city standings all season.

The Comets rallied from a 1-0 deficit and a 2-1 deficit to lead at halftime, 3-2. Elder (14-2-4) got on the board first at the 35:21 mark on a goal from their all-time scoring leader Joey Sabato. Mason tied the game with a goal from Bryce Curran, a Xavier signee, from about 12 yards out at the 30:34 mark. The assist came from senior Evan Couchot.

Elder responded and took a 2-1 lead at the 24:10 mark of the first half after the Mason defense couldn't clear the ball from their end of the field. It was the first time Mason allowed two goals all season and was just the fifth goal the Comets allowed all season.

The Comets rallied back scoring the next two goals in the first half. Junior Danny Loehr scored at the 15:09 mark to tie the game at 2. Junior Max Mitchell then added another goal with just 1:04 left in the first half to give the Comets a 3-2 lead.

Curran scored his third goal at the 30:36 mark of the second half on a shot off the side of his foot in heavy traffic to put Mason ahead 4-2. He then scored his third goal of the night at the 13:08 mark on an amazing lob over the Elder defense to give the Comets a 5-2 advantage.

The Mason boys' soccer team is going to the Division I regional final for the third time in the past four seasons. Mason (18-0-2) plays Moeller (9-5-7) at noon Saturday at Lakota West in the regional final. The Crusaders advanced by defeating last years regional champion, Beavercreek, in overtime by a score of 2-1.

Saturday's winner heads to the State Final Four to play either Hilliard Davidson or Dublin Jerome on Wednesday, November 11th, 7:00 PM @ TBA.

BOYS SOCCER BACK TO THE FINAL FOUR!

The Mason Boys Soccer Team is returning to the State Final Four! Evan Couchot scored the lone goal Saturday, propelling the Comets to a 1-0 victory in the Division I Region 4 final at Lakota West High School. Bryce Curran assisted on Couchot's one-touch shot in the box in the 53rd minute following a scramble for the ball. The second-half score was enough for Mason goalkeeper Drew Grisham and the Comets' defense, which preserved the team's 16th shutout of the season. The victory was the programs 3rd overall Regional Championship, all in the past 4 seasons.

Defenders Michael Besse, Patch Butler, Danny Loehr and Stephen Springsteen kept Moeller shots at a minimum as the Comets controlled possession throughout the match. Moeller put some pressure on the Comets in the final minutes after earning several corner kicks. The Mason defense was up to the task, keeping the ball out of the net and starting the celebration.

Mason, 19-0-2 and ranked second in the state coaches' poll, has allowed just six goals this season. The four-time Greater Miami Conference champion has outscored five postseason opponents, 25-3.

Mason earns a return trip to the state semifinals against the Region 3 champion, Hilliard Davidson at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Centerville Alumni Stadium. Hilliard (18-1-3) defeated Dublin Jerome 2-1 on Saturday to advance. They were ranked #10 in the latest state polls while Dublin Jerome was the #3 ranked team before the loss.

The winner of Wednesday's contest will earn the right to play for the OHSAA Division 1 State Championship at MAPFRE Stadium (Columbus Crew) on Saturday, November 14th. Mason won the big-school state championship in 2013 with a 22-0-1 record. The Comets have won 74 of 86 matches since the beginning of the 2012 season.

Comets Suffer Loss At State Semi-Final

A tremendous 2015 season for the Mason Boys Soccer Team came to an end on Wednesday night at Centerville in the OHSAA State Semi-Finals. The Comets, playing in their third Final Four in the last 4 years lost to Hilliard Davidson by a final score of 2-1. It was Mason's (19-1-2) first loss of the season. Sixteen seniors on this years team ended their brilliant high school careers with the loss. During the past 4 years they have compiled an amazing won-lost record of 74-6-7 and lost only one GMC contest during that span, going 34-1-1. 

Number 10 ranked Hilliard Davidson put up a formidable defense and the Comets had trouble finding the back of the net. Davidson took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a sliding right-footed goal by a Wildcat who got behind the Mason defense. 

The Comets tied the score in the 25th minute on senior forward Bryce Curran's beautiful header off a 30-yard entry pass from the left wing by junior defender Stephen Springsteen. With the clock winding down, it looked like the first half would end in a 1-1 tie. But, the Wildcats regained a one-goal lead in the final minute of the half on an arcing point-blank shot, out of a crowd, that slid by Comet keeper, Drew Grisham. 

In the final 40 minutes of play, Mason had chances, but the Davidson defense turned away offensive opportunities while Comet scoring attempts were either high or wide. 

Although its sad to see the season end, there is much to celebrate for the boy's soccer program. For the 2nd time in the past three years, the team completed the regular season undefeated claiming their 6th GMC title. Sixteen of the teams 22 games this season were shutouts.  The Comets won the District Championship for the 4th year in a row and 6th time in the history of the program. Mason achieved their 3rd Regional title in the past 4 years. The boys were consistently ranked #1 in the city and #2 in the state polls, all season. 

Few high school boys soccer programs in the State of Ohio can match the accomplishments that the Comets have achieved in recent years. We sadly say goodbye to our seniors who have given so much to the program, but look forward to the future, as a talented group of underclassman return next season to carry on the proud Mason boys soccer heritage. 

Congratulations to all the players and coaches on another "season to remember".

On Saturday night, playing in their 2015 home opener on TOP Soccer night, the Mason girls prevailed against a quality St. Ursula Academy squad with a final result of 2-1. Both Mason goals were also the first Varsity goals for two Mason players; freshman forward Allison Winterhalter and junior midfielder Brook Radcliffe.

Mason scored about five minutes into the first half when sophomore defender Annie Metzger got loose down the right side and drove deep into the SUA zone. After creating some space from a defender, she crossed the ball into the middle and onto the foot of Winterhalter, who calmly settled the ball, turned and fired a shot to her left and past the SUA keeper. The balance of the first half was a stalemate, dominated by solid midfield and defensive play.

Mason went into the half up 1-0. At half time, the fans were treated to exciting exhibition soccer played by Cincy TOP Soccer athletes in three simultaneous small sided games. The Mason varsity players were able to join their friends from Cincy Top Soccer and their teammates from both junior varsity teams for part of the half time exhibition games, helping make the evening that much more memorable for all.

About eight and a half minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Hayley Moses found Radcliffe with a near perfect pass as she was crossing into the center of the SUA zone. Through sheer effort and determination, Radcliff was able to beat her defender and the charging SUA keeper to make the score 2-0.

Mason used six players in the defensive back four, in a variety of combinations, plus several different holding midfielders to stymie the potent SUA offense. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro faced four shots for the match, stopping three but conceding a lone goal on a hard shot from the six with less than six minutes remaining in the game.

Mason plays Monday, August 24th, vs. Notre Dame Academy (3-0-0) in Northern Kentucky.

Mason (2-0-0) picked up their first road win of the season in northern Kentucky against Notre Dame Academy (3-1-0) on Monday by a final score of 2-0.

The first half saw both teams focused on defense and ball possession, limiting the scoring opportunities for the opposing offenses; Mason generated five shots on goal while the Notre Dame Academy Pandas generated three. The first half ended with the score 0-0.

The second half started much as the first half ended, with solid defense and midfield play limiting scoring opportunities for both teams. However with just over nineteen minutes remaining in the match, Moses worked free deep on the right side of the Panda's zone and drove a ball back into the middle of the field, finding Egan making a well timed run into the middle of the box toward goal. Egan directed the cross onto frame and past the Notre Dame keeper, making the score 1-0, Mason. This was McKenna's (sophomore) first varsity goal.

With just under a minute remaining in the match, Mason was awarded a free kick for a foul just outside the box, but in the center of the field. Moses calmly lined up to take the kick and placed it just inside the upper left 90, giving Mason the 2-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had six saves in the match and the Mason defense and midfield again limited the quality scoring opportunities of an opponent in recording their first shutout of the year.

Mason next plays Saturday, August 29th, at home vs. Lebanon (1-0-0).

Mason (2-0-1) played 80 minutes of scoreless soccer with Greater Western Ohio Conference South opponent Lebanon (2-0-1) Saturday afternoon.

Lebanon started the game with a burst of energy, aggressively attacking the Mason zone and creating several quality scoring opportunities. About five minutes in, Mason settled in and the game became a defensive battle, with both midfields, defenses and goalkeepers continually finding ways to disrupt the others' offensive rhythm. Late in the first half, Mason created several quality scoring opportunities of their own, but the Lebanon keeper was up to the task. Mason finished the first half with five shots on goal and Lebanon with two.

The second half was very much like the first half with both midfields, defenses and keepers disrupting the offensive flow for the opposing team. Lebanon again had two shots on goal, while Mason managed three shots on goal, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

The Mason defense, led by senior Emma Thacker and senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro, with four saves, limited the scoring opportunities for Lebanon and recorded their second shutout of the season. With two defenders out with injury for the match, Mason had several players step up on defense, including seniors Brielle Flora and Jillian Snyder, sophomores Lexie Lucius and Olivia Popovich and freshman Aliyah El-Naggar.

Mason next plays Thursday, September 10th, at home in their Greater Miami Conference opener vs. Lakota West (1-1-0).

COMET GIRLS SOCCER TOPS WEST!

After going eleven days without a game, Mason (3-0-1) opened Greater Miami Conference play against Lakota West (1-2-2) at home with a gutsy 1-0 victory.

The match was dominated by the midfield and defense for both sides, with Lakota West limited to one shot on goal in the first half and none in the second half. Mason was held to four shots on goal in the first half and only one shot on goal in the second half. However, Mason made that one shot on goal in the second half count, as they were able to convert it to the only goal of the match.

A pair of senior midfielders combined for the only goal of the match. Nearly 27 minutes into the second half, senior midfielder Haley Moses was able to control the ball at the end line, make a Lakota West defender miss and then slot a pass into fellow senior midfielder Julianne Berry, who was just outside the six and to the right of the goal. Berry was able to receive the pass, turn and fire a shot far post, beating the Lakota West goalkeeper, who up to that point had played flawlessly. Berry represents the fifth different Comet to score this year.

Once again, the defensive back line and senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro (one save) refused to yield quality scoring opportunities to an opponent, limiting Lakota West to just one shot on goal for the match, resulting in their third shutout of the season.

Mason next plays Saturday, September 12th, at Loveland (5-0-0), in a match featuring the top two teams in the city currently.

In a match featuring the top two teams in the city, Mason (#1) (3-0-2) and Loveland (#2) (5-0-1) played to a 1-1 tie in what was an epic battle of midfields and defensives.

About nine minutes into the first half, Mason was awarded a free kick about 25 yards out and to the left of goal. Senior midfielder Haley Moses lined up and placed the ball just inside the six and left of center. The Loveland keeper was able to get to and punch the ball away, but a charging Mason player was able to head the ball back toward goal. The subsequent clear attempt found the foot of freshman forward Allison Winterhalter, who immediately fired a shot through traffic and back on goal. The Loveland keeper got her hands to the ball, but the shot was too powerful and rolled across the goal line, putting Mason up 1-0.

Much of the first half was dominated by midfield and defensive play, with Mason and Loveland both managing only two shots on goal for the half. Lead by seniors Julianne Berry and Haley Moses, Mason's midfield, including senior Sanika Pinnanath, junior Brook Radcliff, sophomores McKenna Egan, Annie Metzger and Jordi Reddington and freshman Olivia Polnow, were very effective in disrupting transition play between the eighteens and allowing Mason to take a 1-0 lead into half time.

The second half opened with Loveland playing with greater energy and aggressively on the attack. Just over three minutes into the half, that strategy paid off, as Claire Beran (#20) got free down the right side, gained position on the end line and was able to slot a cross just beyond the outstretched hand of the diving senior Mason keeper, Toni Bizzarro, and onto the foot of Brice Grieshop (#15) timing a perfect run on goal, finishing with a one touch shot and evening the match at 1-1. Bizzarro finished with six saves on the night.

While both teams created more quality scoring chances in the second half than the first, the balance of the match was much like the first half, with two high caliber midfields and defenses keeping the others team's offensive at bay.

Mason next plays Tuesday, September 15th, at Lakota East (3-1-1), in another conference battle.

GIRLS STAY UNBEATEN!

Mason (5-0-4, 3-0-1) traveled to Sycamore Thursday night and with a goal from senior midfielder Haley Moses and their sixth shutout of the season, remained undefeated in the GMC, handing Sycamore (4-1-4, 2-1-1) their first conference loss.

In the first half, both teams featured team defense, especially through the midfield. Mason was limited to two shots on goal and one corner kick in the half while Sycamore managed just one shot on goal and one corner kick. The teams ended the first half with the score identical to the score at the start of the match, 0-0.

Mason started the second half with more energy and more precise passing, generating several scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half. About a minute and a half into the second half, sophomore midfielder Jordi Reddington received a pass as she was moving deep into the Sycamore zone. Carrying the ball to the left of goal and almost to the end line, she was able to turn and find Moses moving to goal. A well placed pass through traffic found Moses' foot, which she one touch shot, from nearly point blank range, to the right of the Sycamore keeper and into the back of the net. While Mason generated six shots on goal in the second half, Moses' goal would prove to be the only one that found the back of the net.

Aggressive team defense through the midfield and harassing defense deeper in the Mason zone held Sycamore to one additional shot on goal in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had two saves for the match as Mason earned their sixth shutout of the season.

The Comets are ranked #1 in the city and #5 in the latest state wide polls. Mason will again be on the road for their next match, as they travel to play Girls Greater Catholic League opponent Ursuline Academy (4-3-3, 1-1-1) this Saturday, September 26th.

GIRLS STILL UNDEFEATED!

A late first half goal off of a corner kick, a late second half highlight reel header goal and another team defense, shutout effort propelled Mason (6-0-4, 3-0-1) past Ursuline Academy (4-4-3, 1-1-1) on the road Saturday night. Junior defender Olivia Popovich scored her first career Varsity goal in the first half of the match and senior midfielder Julianne Berry scored in the second half using her head.

While Mason dominated possession through much of the first half, they were only able to generate two shots on goal and earn two corner kicks. However, Mason made the best of those opportunities, converting a late corner kick into a goal with just over six minutes to play in the half. Senior midfielder Jillian Snyder got her head onto a corner kick and put the ball down in the box and about ten yards from goal. Popovich was able to get to the ball and force it through a UA defender and past the UA keeper to make the score 1-0 going into the half.

The second half saw only a slight advantage in time of possession for Mason, as UA played with more energy and with more players committed to the attack. With over thirty-one minutes gone in the half, senior midfielder Haley Moses was able to collect the ball to the right of goal and deep in the UA zone. After creating space from her defender, Moses launched a cross high and back into the center of the field. Berry was in position to run onto the ball and use her head to drive a shot just over the UA keeper and just under the crossbar, making the score 2-0. Mason finished the match with five shots on goal and four corner kicks.

With solid team defense and goalkeeping, Mason was able to limit UA to two shots on goal and one corner kick for the match. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had two saves for the match as Mason earned their fourth consecutive shutout and their seventh shutout for the season.

Mason will again be on the road for their next match, a Greater Miami Conference match at Princeton (5-5-0, 0-4-0) this Tuesday night, September 29th.

Girls Win Another!

Mason (7-0-4, 4-0-1) had six different players record a goal as they scored three goals in the first and three more in the second half of their conference match vs. Princeton (5-6-0, 0-5-0) to win 6-0 Tuesday night. Sophomore midfielder Lexie Lucius and sophomore forward Jordi Reddington each scored their first varsity goals in the match, and both goals were unassisted. Mason also took full advantage of their eight corner kicks, converting two to goals.

Mason's first goal of the match came just over 25 minutes in and on a corner kick opportunity. Senior midfielder Haley Moses kicked the corner on the ground and toward goal. A Mason player moved toward the ball, but let it pass between her legs and across the mouth of the goal, where sophomore forward McKenna Egan was able to connect with it and drive a shot past the Princeton keeper. Sophomore midfielder Annie Metzger scored about eight minutes later after receiving a pass from Egan as she entered the box, cleared her defender and fired a shot far past. The third goal of the match came with just under 30 seconds remaining when senior midfielder Brielle Flora was able to get her body on a brilliant cross from junior forward Brooke Radcliffe at the far post and push it into goal. Mason entered the half up 3-0.

Just over five minutes into the second half, Reddington fired a shot low and hard on goal from about 15 yards out. The shot was blocked by the Princeton keeper, but Reddington had followed her shot and quickly put the rebound into the back of the net. Just over eight minutes later, Mason again converted a corner kick into a goal. This time Metzger put the corner high and deep where senior midfielder Julianne Berry was able to get her head onto the ball and place it just over the hands of the keeper and just under the crossbar. The final goal of the match came about four minutes later when Lucius collected a loose ball behind the defense, raced toward goal and beat the charging Princeton keeper with a well place shot near post.

Mason was able to limit Princeton to three shots on goal and zero corner kicks for the match. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had one save and junior goalkeeper Kateland Sipe had two saves for the match as Mason earned their fifth consecutive shutout and their eighth shutout for the season.

Mason will return home Thursday evening, October 1st, for their Greater Miami Conference match vs. Colerain (2-6-2, 0-4-1).

Girls Shutdown Colerain

With twelve different players combining for 21 shots on goal for the match, Mason (8-0-4, 5-0-1) was able to defeat Colerain (2-7-2, 0-5-1) in a Greater Miami Conference match at home Thursday night by a score of 3-0. Senior forward Katarina Schneiderman scored twice, once in each half after freshman midfielder Allison Winterhalter opened the scoring for the Comets. Mason recorded their sixth shutout in a row and their ninth shutout of the season.

About three and a half minutes into the match, senior midfielder Julianne Berry found Winterhalter just outside the box. After clearing her defender, Winterhalter ripped a hard, bouncing shot toward goal from about 22 yards out that found the back of the net and put Mason up 1-0. With just under eight minutes remaining in the half, sophomore midfielder Annie Metzger got free on the ride side and dribbled deep into the Colerain zone. After beating a defender, Metzger crossed the ball toward the far post and to Schneiderman, who promptly finished, putting Mason up 2-0 at the half.

While Mason created a number of chances early in the second half, the Colerain keeper was up to the challenge. Nineteen minutes into the second half, sophomore midfielder McKenna Egan slotted a through ball onto the foot of Schneiderman as she broke free of the defense. Schneiderman moved the ball deeper into the Colerain zone and to the keeper's left. As she moved into the box and the keeper committed to charge, Schneiderman hit a hard, low shot to the far post, beating the keeper and putting Mason up by a score of 3-0.

Mason was able to limit Colerain to two shots on goal and zero corner kicks for the match. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro and junior goalkeeper Kateland Sipe shared time between the posts and combined for two saves for the match.

Mason returns to the road for their next match next Tuesday evening, October 6th, a Greater Miami Conference match vs. Middletown (0-9-3, 0-6-0). The Comets are ranked #2 in the city and #10 in the state polls. Mason has 4 league games remaining on their schedule before the postseason begins.

Girls Soccer Stays Unbeaten

For the second time this year, six different Mason players found the back of the net, as Mason (9-0-4, 6-0-1) defeated Middletown (1-10-3, 0-7-0) Tuesday night on the road by a score of 6-0. For two of the Mason scorers, these goals also represent their first Varsity goals; junior forward Hannah Kallach scored the sixth goal of the match in the second half and freshman midfielder Olivia Polnow scored the third goal of the match late in the first half. In total, Mason had 14 players tally 23 shots on goal and create nine corner kicks for the match.

Mason started a little slow, but took advantage of a corner kick just over 10 minutes into the match to get on the board. Mason opted for a short corner, which put the ball onto the foot of senior midfielder Haley Moses, who moved to the end line and promptly fired a cross low and hard through the box and across the mouth of the goal. Sophomore defender Olivia Popovich, making a far post run, was able to get to the ball and drive it into the net.

Senior forward Katarina Schneiderman scored Mason's second goal almost seventeen minutes later. Senior midfielder Julianne Berry drove deep into the Middletown zone and passed the ball back to a trailing Schneiderman, just as she came into the box. Schneiderman reversed direction to get her defender onto her left hip and then fired a shot far post, making the score 2-0.

Mason's next goal came about five and a half minutes later as Polnow collected a loose ball just outside of the box and fired a low, hard shot through traffic and back toward goal. The keeper was unable to see the shot before it was too late giving Polnow her first Varsity goal and Mason a 3-0 lead.

With just over three minutes remaining in the half, junior forward Brooke Radcliffe was able to beat everyone else to a loose ball in the box and promptly turned and fired a shot toward goal. The shot was partially blocked/deflected by a defender, but had enough on it to roll past the keeper and into the net, giving Mason a 4-0 lead at the half.

Mason started the second half pressing and creating scoring opportunities. Just three and a half minutes into the half a pair of sophomores combined for a goal. Forward McKenna Egan found fellow forward Jordi Reddington in stride with a pass back against pressure, to the left of goal. Reddington continued her run and fired a low, hard shot far post and passed the Middletown keeper.

Mason's sixth and final goal of the match was the result of sophomore midfielder Annie Metzger driving deep and wide down the right side of the field. A perfectly placed, far post cross found Kallach making a near perfect run through the box. Kallach calmly brought the ball down to her foot and promptly fired a shot into the goal.

Mason was able to limit Middletown to two shots on goal and zero corner kicks for the match. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro and junior goalkeeper Kateland Sipe shared time between the posts and combined for two saves for the match. Mason recorded their tenth shutout of the season and their seventh in a row in securing the conference win.

On Senior Night last Saturday, Mason (10-1-4, 6-1-1) got three goals from three different seniors in the second half to beat Eastern Cincinnati Conference opponent Milford (5-5-4, 3-1-2) by a score of 3-0 at home. For two of the three seniors, the goals represent the first Varsity goals of their Mason soccer careers; senior midfielder Sanika Pinnanath scored with just over eighteen minutes remaining in the second half and senior defender Emma Thacker scored on an awarded penalty kick with under ten seconds remaining in the match. The only assist in the match also came off of the foot of a senior. Coach Schur would have been hard pressed to script a better match for his ten seniors on Saturday night.

The first half saw both teams play solid team defense, limiting scoring opportunities. Mason managed three shots on goal in the first half and earned two corner kicks. Milford had the best scoring opportunity of the half when a forward got behind the Mason defense and dribbled deep into the Mason zone, straight at goal. Just as she crossed into the Mason box, senior Mason goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro charged forward; the Milford player fired a shot that Bizzarro collected as she was falling to her knees, ending the threat. The score at the half was 0-0.

The first twenty minutes of the second half were very similar to the first half, but Mason was able to better possess the ball and create more opportunities. With just over eighteen minutes remaining in the second half, senior midfielder Haley Moses dribbled to the Milford end line, beat her defender and crossed the ball back across the mouth of the goal, low and hard. A streaking Pinnanath was able to just beat her defender and get a foot to the ball, poking it into the back of the net and putting Mason on the scoreboard.

With just over six minutes remaining, senior midfielder Brielle Flora collected a loose ball deep in the Milford zone that Milford had failed to clear and immediately fired a shot back toward goal, through traffic and near post, low and hard to put Mason up 2-0.

With about ten seconds remaining, senior forward Katarina Schneiderman beat her defender with a nifty move in the Milford box and as she turned to goal was taken down, resulting in a foul being called and penalty kick awarded. Thacker calmly spotted the ball and then drilled the penalty kick hard and high, to the keeper's right, to make the final score 3-0. Mason finished the match with eight shots on goal and three corner kicks.

Mason was able to limit Milford to three shots on goal and zero corner kicks for the match. Bizzarro had three saves for the match and Mason recorded their eleventh shutout of the season, securing the nonconference win.

Mason plays their final 2016 regular season match at home on Tuesday night against Greater Miami Conference leading Oak Hills (8-2-3, 6-0-1). The Comets need a win to grab a share of the GMC title.

Mason is the #2 seed in the upcoming Sectional Tournament. They will host the winner of the Amelia/Colerain contest on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:00 pm.

GIRLS SOCCER ADVANCES!

Mason (11-1-5), playing in their first post season match of the 2015 season, used three first half goals, a pressing offensive attack and a stifling defense to eliminate Amelia (14-3-0) from the post season on Thursday night by a final score of 4-0. Senior midfielder Haley Moses had an assist and a goal on a night that saw Mason's defense and midfield hold the potent Amelia offense to three shots on goal for the match.

Mason opened the scoring early when just over three minutes into the match Moses crossed a ball from just outside the box and to the right of the Amelia goal high and about 8 yards out. Senior midfielder Julianne Berry tracked the ball and headed the ball past the Amelia keeper, putting Mason up 1-0. Shortly thereafter, Amelia had an opportunity to tie it up, but the opportunity was nullified by charging senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro making a sliding save. That opportunity would be the only shot on goal for Amelia in the half, as Mason played stout team defense throughout.

Mason continued to press the offensive advantage throughout the half, creating a total of seven quality opportunities in the first half. Mason's next score occurred just after the half way point of the half when Moses charged a ball rolling away from the goal, about sixteen yards out. She fired her put back shot low and yard, just inside the far post and past the Amelia keeper, making the score 2-0. With just over five minutes remaining in the half, freshman midfielder Allison Winterhalter slotted a perfect diagonal through ball between two Amelia defenders and into the path of sophomore midfielder Annie Metzger making a perfectly timed diagonal run from the outside, putting her behind the Amelia defense. Metzger collected the ball in stride and beat the Amelia keeper far post making the score at the half 3-0 Mason.

Mason continued to press offensively throughout the second half, recording six shots on goal. With about three and a half minutes remaining in the match, senior forward Katarina Schneiderman beat two defenders deep in the Amelia zone and fired a shot from about 8 yards out, near post, making the score 4-0. Mason, playing stifling team defense throughout, limited Amelia to just two shots on goal in the second half, one of which was a dangerous shot through traffic after a corner kick that was tracked and collected by Bizzarro.

Bizzarro finished the match with three saves as Mason recorded their thirteenth shutout of the season. The back three defenders, freshman Aliyah El-Naggar, sophomore Olivia Popovich and senior Emma Thacker along with senior holding midfielder Julianne Berry continue to stifle the opposing team's offensive attack game after game.

Mason's next post season match will be at Lakota West High School on Monday, October 26th, against a familiar foe, fellow Greater Miami Conference school Lakota East (9-5-3), which advance after beating Middletown. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Girls Soccer Wins Sectional!

Mason (12-1-5) scored the only goal of the match on a set piece in the second half to defeat a familiar foe in fellow Greater Miami Conference school Lakota East (9-6-3) by a score of 1-0, earning them a 2015 Sectional Champions title. The winning goal came off of the head of senior midfielder Julianne Berry.

The first half saw both teams play very solid team defense, limiting the other's scoring opportunities. In fact, neither team earned a corner kick in the first half and neither managed a shot on goal either, with Mason managing two shots to none for Lakota East for the half.

Mason started the second half with a bit more energy and focused on creating opportunities. One such opportunity came about eleven minutes into the second half when Mason earned their first corner kick of the match. Senior midfielder Haley Moses lined up to take the corner and drove a high arcing ball just beyond the near post. Berry tracked the ball, beating her mark and getting her head to the ball, driving it back post and past the Lakota East keeper, putting Mason up to stay 1-0.

Mason finished the match with six shots on goal and three corner kicks while holding Lakota East to three shots on goal and one corner kick. Mason played solid team defense throughout, earning their fourteenth shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had three saves for the match.

Mason's next post season match will be at Lakota West High School on Thursday, October 29th, against Greater Western Ohio Conference opponent Centerville (11-3-4), which advances after beating Northmont in their Sectional Final. Mason will by vying for their 4th consecutive District Title and an opportunity to advance to the State Sweet Sixteen next week.

Comets Win 2015 Coaches Classic

Led by flight winners, Lizzy Kong (#2 singles) and the team of Isabel Cepeda and Sneha Kandi (#1 doubles), the Comets continued their winning ways by winning Flight A of the GCTCA Coaches' Classic on a breezy Saturday. Mason earned 290 team points to 205 points for the second place Aviators of Sycamore.

Sanjana Datla lost in the finals at #3 singles while Amanda Huser (# 1 singles) and the #2 doubles team of Nicole Reid and Shirley Yang both won their respective back draws.

The 16-0 Comets travel to Indian Hill on Monday and then play Turpin at home on Wednesday before hosting the GMC tournament on Thursday.

The Comets currently lead the GMC tourney which will conclude at Mason on Saturday. The girls are focused on winning their 3rd overall GMC title and 2nd in the past 3 seasons. The team is currently ranked #1 in the city and undefeated with a 18-0 record.

GIRLS TENNIS...GMC CHAMPS!

The Comet Girls Tennis team earned their 3rd GMC Championship this past Saturday on their home courts. Mason won 4 of 5 flights to capture the 2015 league trophy. The Comets had already secured a share of the title by going undefeated during the regular season.

Lizzy Kong defeated Sycamore’s Maggie Skwara at #2 singles 7-6 (4), 6-3, At #3 singles, Sanjana Datla defeated Kaitlyn Jiang of Sycamore 6-1, 7-6 (2).

The cardiac Comets won each doubles flight in three sets. Nicole Reid and Sneha Kandi defeated Sycamore’s Caroline Gao and Sarah Wittenbaum 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the top doubles flight. Sonya Kapoor and Isabel Cepeda clinched the sweep of the finals with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at #2 doubles over Brianna Dooley and Helen Sotropa of Sycamore.

Junior, Amanda Huser finished in 3rd place for the Comets, defeating Lakota East’s Claire Holtmeier 6-0, 6-1, garnering important points for the GMC champs. See results below:

Mason continues thier undefeated season when they play Sycamore in the State Team Tourney on Wednesday at Sycamore.

The OHSAA Sectional Tournament gets underway Thursday, October 1, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to dark at Mason. The Semifinals and Finals are are scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 9:00 a.m. at Mason. Qualifiers will advance to Districts. Qualifiers from each Sectional to District will be four singles and four doubles in Division I.

Mason Doubles Teams Qualify for District

The Comets began Sectional play on Thursday and have qualified both of their doubles teams to Districts. Amanda Huser and Lizzy Kong along with Isabel Cepeda and Sneha Kandi will move on in postseason play.

Qualifiers from each Sectional to District will be four singles and four doubles in Division I. The semi-finals and finals of the Sectional will conclude on Saturday at Mason.

Huser and Kong Sectional Champions!

The semi-finals and finals of the Sectional Tennis Tournament concluded on Saturday. Mason's Amanda Huser and Lizzy Kong stopped doubles teams from Sycamore and Ursuline to win a Sectional Title. The pair along with teammates Isabel Cepeda and Sneha Kandi move on to Districts in the postseason. See results below:

Cepeda-Kandi lost to Duma-O’Connor 6-1, 6-4 in the semis and then were defeated in the 3rd/4th place match by Skwara and Sotropa 1-6, 6-2, 6-1

The Division 1 District Tennis Championships are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8th and Saturday, October 10 at 9:00 am at the Linder Tennis Center in Mason. Qualifiers from District to the State Meet will be four (4) singles and four (4) doubles.

MASON'S DOUBLES TEAMS HEADED TO STATE!

Mason advanced two doubles teams to the Southwest District Finals yesterday, thereby ensuring two spots in the OHSAA tournament to be held next week at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

The team of juniors, Amanda Huser and Lizzy Kong defeated Natalie Fishman and Kiki Bashiri of Centerville 6-2, 6-1. Huser and Kong lost the first two games and then recovered to win 12 of the next 13 games for the victory. In the quarterfinals they steamrolled the MND team of Caroline Gott and Grace Nunn 6-1, 6-0 to punch their ticket to the state tournament.

Juniors, Isabel Cepeda and Sneha Kandi came in as #4 seeds, but quickly showed they are a team to be reckoned with by defeating #1 seeds Vynesa Evanson and Leigh Harden of Butler, 6-1, 6-0. Sneighbell, as the duo is affectionately referred to, then clinched a spot in the state tournament with a quarterfinal win over Anna Jones and Esther Hu of Beavercreek, on center court, by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

Semifinals will take place at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason at 9:00 AM Saturday for both Division I and Division II. The finals and the 3rd place matches will follow. The OHSAA state tournament will also be held at the Lindner Center next week on October 16, 17.

This marks the third straight year that Isabel Cepeda has reached the state tournament as a doubles player; each year with a different partner. (2013 with Huser, 2014 with Kong). Kong also qualifies for the third straight year. She qualified as a Freshman in singles and last year in doubles with Cepeda. Huser qualifies for the second time. (2013 with Cepeda). Sneha Kandi will be making her first appearance at the state tournament.

Kong and Huser District Champions!

At Saturday's OHSAA District Semi's and Finals, Juniors Lizzy Kong and Amanda Huser defeated Ursuline’s Jenny Duma and Gabrielle O’Connor 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to capture the SW District doubles title. The duo defeated Sycamore’s Maggie Skwara and Helen Sotropa in the semis 6-3, 6-4.

Huser and Kong will represent the SW district as #1 seeds in the state tournament which begins Friday, October 16th. This is Kong’s second straight district title. Last year Kong won the same event with teammate Isabel Cepeda.

Fellow juniors, Cepeda and Sneha Kandi will also represent Mason in the state tournament. They lost in the semifinals 6-0, 6-3 to Duma and O’Connor, but rebounded to take third place by defeating Sycamore Aviators, Maggie Skwara and Helen Sotropa. Cepeda and Kandi will go into the state tournament as a #3 seed.

The OHSAA Division 1 State Tennis Championships will be held this Firday and Saturday at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.

GO COMETS!

Mason Doubles Teams competed at the State Tennis Championships this past weekend at the Linder Family Tennis Center. Both teams represented the Comets well but failed to advance past their second round matches.

Juniors Amanda Huser and Lizzy Kong won their opening round match versus a team from Rocky River by scores of 6-4, 6-1. They fell to eventual 3rd place winners from Upper Arlington by scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the next round.

Juniors Isabel Cepeda and Sneha Kandi also won their opening match versus Toleda St. Ursula by scores of 6-2, 6-4. They lost to eventual state champions, sisters Olivia Kompa and Pagie Kompa in their second round match by scores of 6-0, 6-2.

Hats off and congratulations on a tremendous season to all of the players and coaches! 2016 looks very bright for Mason tennis!

The Varsity Volleyball team opened up their season with a huge, come from behind victory over #3 in the city St. Ursula 16-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 15-10 on Monday night.

The Comets won by pure heart and desire! Seniors Emily Malsch and Leah Hefelfinger powered the team through a HOT night; Malsch tallying up 27 assists, 15 digs and one service ace, Hefelfinger with 5 kills. Sophomore Anna Brinkmann pounded down 14 kills and was stellar in the back row with 19 digs; Freshmen Maggie King dotted the court with 16 kills and 3 blocks. Junior Julia Allen lit up the back row with 23 digs and one service ace.

It was an exciting WIN and a solid effort by everyone!

All 3 Mason Volleyball teams charted a victory last night at Turpin!
The Varsity Volleyball team defeated the Spartans 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21. Senior Emily Malsch lead the way with 2 service aces, 21 setting assists and 15 digs; Freshmen duo Sammie Puisis and Maggie King had solid performances with 10 kills and 9 kills respectively. Junior Julia Allen had 19 digs and 3 service aces.

The Comets (2-0) travel to Loveland for a tri match against Lebanon and Loveland tomorrow. First game at 11am.

The Lady Comets split this past weekend defeating Lebanon 25-15, 25-19 and dropping a very close game with Loveland 27-25, 23-25, 26-28.

Freshmen Maggie King had a combined total of 11 kills and 22 digs; Freshmen Sammie Puisis combined for 15 kills and 5 blocks; Junior Lakin Steedly had 26 total assists and 3 service aces.

The Comets host McNicholas tonight at 7pm.

The Lady Comets lost a close battle with McNick 25-12, 23-25, 25-15, 20-25, 12-15 on Monday. Senior Emily Malsch had 26 assists, 20 digs and 7 kills; Freshman Maggie King had 20 kills and 16 digs; Freshman Sammie Puisis had 16 kills, 4 service aces and 3 blocks; Senior Katy Glandorf had 13 digs.

The Comets are 3-2 and travel to Kettering Fairmont on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd.

The Varsity Volleyball had another exciting, long evening of volleyball on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd. The Comets captured their 4th win by defeating Kettering Fairmont 28-30, 25-12, 25-13, 27-29, 15-8.

Sophomore Anna Brinkmann came up big with 21 kills, 31 digs and 7 service aces; Senior Emily Malsch dished out 30 assists along with 6 kills and 17 digs; Freshman Sammie Puisis added 13 kills.

The Comets are 4-2 and travel to Roger Bacon next Tuesday at 6:30.

The Varsity Volleyball team defeated Roger Bacon 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 on Tuesday. The Comets started off slow, trailing 9-2 before Freshman Sammie Puisis took charge at the net with 2 blocks and 3 kills and the Comets never looked back!

Senior Emily Malsch had a great night leading the Comets with 19 setting assists, 6 kills, 15 digs and 2 service aces; Senior Leah Hefelfinger had 6 kills; Senior Kylie McCalmont 3 kills; Junior Lakin Steedly dished out 18 assists; Sophomore Anna Brinkmann pounded down 10 kills and had 12 digs; Freshmen duo Sammie Puisis and Maggie King had 9 and 7 kills respectively.

The Comets are 5-2 and will start conference play Thursday as they travel to Lakota West for a 6:30 start.

MASON VB STOPS FIREBIRDS

The #4 in the city, Mason Volleyball team started their quest for a 3rd GMC Championship by defeating Lakota West 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 on Thursday night.

Senior Emily Malsch had another outstanding game with 19 digs, 17 assists, 20 digs and had time to pound down 8 kills! Helping her out was Sophomore Anna Brinkmann with 13 kills, 22 digs and 2 service aces; Freshman Maggie King was hot at the net with 14 kills; Junior Lakin Steedly dished out 24 assists.

The 6-2 Comets will travel to Vandalia-Butler tomorrow for a 12:30 game.

The Varsity Volleyball team took a tough defeat last night to #3 in the city, Lakota East. The #5 in the city, Comets were led by Sophomore Anna Brinkmann with 9 kills and 24 digs; Freshman Sammie Puisis pounded down 12 kills and 5 service aces; Freshman Maggie King had 11 kills and 2 service aces; Senior Emily Malsch dished out 18 assists and 20 digs.

The Comets are 7-3 and will travel to Hamilton on Thursday.

The Varsity Volleyball team defeated Hamilton 25-7, 25-12, 25-10 on Thursday night. This victory came from a solid team effort! Leading the Comets at the front line was Sophomore Anna Brinkmann with 11 kills; Freshman Sammie Puisis with 5 kills; Senior Leah Hefelfinger with 4 kills. Seniors Emily Malsch and Katy Glandorf led the backrow with 19 digs and 11 digs respectively.

The Comets are 8-3 and will travel to Fenwick on Monday.

The Varsity Volleyball team came out on fire last Monday evening with a huge win over Fenwick: 29-27, 25-21, 25-17. Senior Emily Malsch dished out 25 assists and had 16 digs; Sophomore Anna Brinkmann pounded down 14 kills and had 19 digs; Freshman Sammie Puisis had 10 kills and 2 solo blocks.

The Volley for the Cure was a huge success on Thursday night! A wonderful evening of raising money to help bring awareness to Breast Cancer and an awesome evening of victory for all 3 Mason Volleyball Teams! Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Comets and this great cause.

The Comets took down the Aviators 25-19, 25-13, 25-14. Freshman Maggie King was on fire at the net with 12 kills; Freshman Sammie Puisis contributed 9 kills and 2 blocks; Senior Emily Malsch had 23 assists and 14 digs.

The Comets (10-3) host Beavercreek and Seton tomorrow at 10am and 12pm.

The Varsity Volleyball team went to 12-3 after taking both games this weekend during their trimatch. The Comets took down Beavercreek 25-13, 25-20 in the first game. Freshman Maggie King had 6 kills and 20 digs, Freshman Sammie Puisis had 6 kills and 2 service aces and Senior Emily Malsch dished out 13 assists and had 12 digs.

The Comets started a little slow in game two, but bounced back sets 2 and 3 against Seton to pull out the win, 19-25, 25-15, 25-19. Freshmen duo Maggie King and Sammie Puisis took control of the game offensively with 12 and 10 kills respectively; Senior Katy Glandorf took control of serving with 3 aces and 4 digs.

The Comets will host Princeton tomorrow at 7pm.

Volleyball Extends Record to 13-3!

The Varsity Volleyball team defeated Princeton 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 on Tuesday night. Senior Skylar Armentrout had 4 kills; Senior Emily Carlin had 2 service aces; Senior Emily Malsch had 21 assists and 11 digs.

The Comets are 13-3 and will travel to Colerain on Thursday for a 7pm game.

The Varsity Volleyball team extended their record to 15-3 with a win over Middletown 25-7, 25-15, 25-8 on Tuesday night. The Senior duo of Ellie Bruns and Kylie McCalmont led the Comets with 8 and 6 kills apiece, while Senior Emily Carlin had 3 service aces. Junior Lakin Steedly dished out 34 assists.

The Comets will travel to Fairfield on Thursday for a 7pm start.

The Varsity Volleyball team swept Fairfield 25-13, 25-13, 25-19 on Thursday night. Attackers, Anna Brinkmann, Maggie King, Sammie Puisis each had 8 kills; Senior Leah Hefelfinger contributed 4 kills. Senior Emily Malsch had 24 assists, 18 digs and 3 service aces.

The Comets (7-1 GMC) go to 16-3 and will host Ursuline tomorrow at 12:30pm.

The Varsity Volleyball lost to #1 in the city, Ursuline 17-25, 18-25, 19-25 last Saturday. The Comets were led by Freshmen Maggie King and Sammie Puisis with 9 kills each. Freshman Sammie Puisis had 15 digs and Junior Lakin Steedly had 2 service aces.

Tonight is Senior Night! Please come out and support the Seniors and their teammates as they take on McAuley starting at 7pm The girls will conclude their regular season with a match at Oak Hills on Tuesday night. Mason is 16-4 overall and 7-1 in the GMC.

Last night Mason completed their regular season schedule with a 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24 win at Oak Hills. The finishes 2nd in the GMC at 8-1 behind Lakota East. Mason has a 18-4 overall record heading into the post season.

Mason is the #6 seed in the upcoming Sectional Tournament. They will play at host Withrow (0-19) on Monday, October 19th in a 1st round contest at 6:30 pm.

The Comets advance and will play Seton tomorrow at 7:30pm at Withrow. Seton defeated Mt. Healthy to advance.

The girls volleyball season came to a disappointing end on Wednesday night with a loss to Seton in the 2nd round of the sectional tournament. Final scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-12.
