5/6 | Lakota East | won | 11-10 | 21-3 | 17-0 | MASON SOFTBALL CLINCHES GMC TITLE! The 2015 Mason Girls Softball Team earned a GMC Championship in dramatic, “come-from-behind” fashion on Tuesday night at the Comet Softball Complex. This years team proved, once again, that they never quit and you should never leave early, as Mason mounted two comebacks to defeat Lakota East 11-10. After spotting their opponent 8 runs in the first two innings, the Comets somehow fought their way back to take an 9-8 lead heading into the 7th inning of play. The Thunderhawks exhibited some of their own comeback talent, scoring two runs in the top half of the inning to take a 10-9 lead. But the Mason “never-say-die” Comets, pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win and claim their third overall GMC Title since entering the league. Mason shared the title in 2014 with West and Fairfield. The Comets also won an outright conference title in 2010. Mason, behind the shut down pitching of Elle Buffenbarger, played flawless defense on the day. Emma Wittman made a sliding, run stopping, catch in right field. Clutch hits came from the usual suspects, including a 2 RBI double from Sidney Ciganik in a pinch- hitting role. Gabby LaSala blasted a HR bomb to bring the Comets within one. Brianna Grimes made a great dirt ball read to tie the game. Olivia Hopkins ground ball in the bottom of the 7th allowed Gabby LaSala to score the winning run and send the Comets home happy. 5/8 | @ Oak Hills | won | 10-0 | 23-3 | 18-0 | COMET SOFTBALL....GMC PERFECTION! Mason completed a clean sweep in the GMC last Friday with a 10-0 shutout of Oak Hills in 5 innings. The Comets finish their 2015 conference schedule with a perfect 18-0 record! It marks the first time in the last 26 years that a conference team has gone undefeated. The last league school to run-the -table in the GMC was 1989 when Fairfield (10-0) posted an unblemished record in a 6-team conference format. "Winning the GMC is always one of our season goals," said head coach Liann Muff. "The GMC is one of the premier leagues in the state. It has proven to be a tougher task to win the GMC than to make it to state as our 2013 final four team can attest." "The level of play within our league is very intense and to have to play the top teams in our league twice a season is a huge task. To beat the top teams in our league twice in one year is a huge accomplishment, and not a surprise that is hasn't been done in decades. I reminded our team that they have so much in which to be proud. The great teams and players who are the foundation of our program accomplished a lot, but even they did not beat everyone in the league twice to go undefeated. Our athletes are enjoying their historic championship season but they are not satisfield. Our second season starts Wednesday" The Comets have an overall record of 23-3 and are ranked as the #2 team in the city and #10 in the state. They hope to wrap up their regular season schedule this afternoon when they host Greenville. Comet Softball earned the #1 seed in the upcoming Sectional postseason tourney. Meanwhile, Fairfield (14-11) couldn’t get anything going against Mason pitcher Elle Buffenbarger (13-2), managing just two hits and three total baserunners. Buffenbarger struck out eight batters. The shutout win was Mason’s fourth straight as the Comets now head into a district final against Lakota East on Friday at Northmont. 5/30 | REGIONAL FINAL vs. Lebanon @ Northmont |
lost | 2-1 | 28-4 | 18-0 | Comets Fall in Regional Classic The Mason Comet Softball team fell to Lebanon in the Regional Final last Saturday by a score of 2-1. The 12 inning affair was an epic battle between two teams who were meeting for the fourth straight year for the opportunity to advance the state final four. The Warriors topped the Comets 3-2 in last year’s regional final and 2-1 in a 2012 regional semifinal. Mason triumphed 1-0 to win a regional crown in 2013. The pitching dominated contest was decided by a wild pitch in bottom of the 12th inning. Elle Buffenbarger threw the first seven innings and Taylor Lewis finished for the Comets, who got two hits apiece from Erin Rockstroh, Hailey Ellis and Emma Wittman. Rockstroh tripled and came home on an Ellis ground out, giving Mason a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Lebanon evened the score 1-1 on a fifth inning blooper. The Warriors turned in a frustrating offensive performance, but Mason had something to do with that. Shortstop Gabby LaSala was outstanding as usual in the field and helped second baseman Olivia Hopkins turn a 4-6 double play in the eighth when Lebanon had the bases loaded with one out. The Comets, who ran the table in the Greater Miami Conference this year, are losing nine seniors: Brandy Bunch, Sydney Ciganik, Harley Connors, Emily Leeson, Haley Rath, Jordan Sullivan, Wittman, LaSala and Ellis. Mason concludes another outstanding season as Regional Runnerup with an overall record of 28-4. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a tremendous season! |

4/8-4/11 | Coaches Classic (Winton Woods | 1st place | BOYS TRACK WINS CLASSIC AGAIN! The Mason track and field team got off to a nice start at the Coaches Classic this past Friday. After they shook some rust off at the prelims, the boys stepped up and looked solid at the finals. The meet was close between Northwest and the Comets, but in the end Mason was able to win the annual prestigious event for the 5th time in the past 7 years. Winners on the night were, Jeron Besecker in the Long Jump, Billy Rook in the pole vault, Nick Grismer in the 3200 and the relays of the 4x200 and the 4x400, both of which set records. The win was a real team effort. Mason got nice 2nd place efforts from many athletes. The team looks to be off to a great start and should continue to improve over the next several weeks. Next up is the Centerville Relays on Friday, April 17th. |
4/17 | Centerville Relays | Mason Track and Field did quite well at the Centerville Elk Relays on April 17th.. They were able to secure the win on the strength of their depth. The Comets put fresh bodies in many events, tried some different things and still did very well. Amit Maity ran in the 4x100 and helped to secure a big win and a great time. The distance boys almost swept, winning most of the distance races, led by Nick Grismer and Joe Thistleton who both ran great and helping their teams in the DMR and the 4x1600. John Morris (JMO) had a great night, running best times on his splits and really helping the squad in the win. The men of the Sprint Medley Squad did well, running the 2nd best time in Mason history, with David Borden running a great anchor leg. Nick Pearson had a great night and was a part of several winning relays and had nearly best times in almost every event he was in, including his first long jump, where he jumped over 20 feet. The field boys did well with Rook, Huber and Marvin winning the pole vault relay and the shot and disc boys, led by Asa Maine and Donald Heffelfinger did great as well. Overall it was a very balanced effort with many great performances. The team won in the face of a great effort by the Pick North squad who were the defending state champions. |

4/24-4/25 | Eastern Relays @ U of L | Mason Boys Win Eastern Relays! Mason was at the Eastern Relays at the University of Louisville this past Friday and Saturday. Our big showing in this meet was in the relays. Individual points are hard to come by, but our relays did great! We won the 4x200, 4x400, Mile Medley, SMR, DMR and a close 2nd in the 4x100. The team of Bryson White, Nick Pearson, Reece Pontious and Amit Maity won the sprint medley relay and ran a blazing time. Their time in that event now ranks 3rd in the NATION!!! The 4x200 squad ran a solid time in tough conditions, as did the 4x400. The Mile medley was helped by the great 800 time of John Morris, and great splits by Michael Murray, Jake Belcastro and David Borden. The DMR got a great effort by Joe Thistleton and a solid anchor by Jake Bauer. In this meet we also got some points out of the high jump by Vince Jackson and great production by our sprinters, including Amit Maity who ran a great time in the 400. Nick Pearson was great in the 200 and Andrew Boeres picked up a point in the 300 hurdles. As evidenced by this meet...Mason Boys Track and Field is very good and is really coming together. It was an impressive team performance and they look to be ready to do great things over the remaining spring season. Next up our Track and Field Teams are competing at the Wayne Warrior Invitational Thursday and Friday. |
|
4/30-5/1 | Wayne Warrior Invite | Last Friday night the men of Mason Track and Field competed at the annual Wayne Invitational. This is a huge meet with some of the best competition from around the state. There were many high points for the team. The 4x100 relay ran the fastest time in the state and a second ranking all time in the City of Cincinnati. The boys team of Bryson White, Nick Pearson, Amit Maity and Reece Pontius ran to a blazing fast 41.82. The Mason 4x400 also lit it up! The squad of Nick Pearson, Jake Belcastro, Amit Maity and David Borden ran to a state #1 time in overwhelming fashion. The Comets received good production out of Vince Jackson in the high jump and Reece Pontius in the triple jump. Many of the top distance runners ran in off of events and did well as they prepare for next week's big Mason Invitational. The team placed 3rd overall, but clearly have some great pieces of our team coming together. This week some of the team will compete in Kings Invite on Tuesday. The annual Mason Invitational is this Friday. |

5/8 | Mason Invite | The Mason Comets track team did quite well on Friday night at the Rod Russell invite. We split our teams and ran Seniors vs. underclassman as much as possible. This was fun because it gave us some inter-team bragging rights and a different look with the relays. It worked out well as the 4x1, 4x2 and 4x4 had great battle right next to one another. The 4x4 was a great way to finish the night with the teams going 1-2 in a pretty loaded field. These teams ran great times, including some top 10 in the state times with our “B” team. It was a fun display of depth and a great night on the track.
In the 400 dash, Amit Maity placed 1st in a #3 state time of 48.31 and set a new school record in the process. The 800 was nice, Mason had 2 men under 2:00 for the first time this year, and this was after a great mile by Nick Grismer. John Morris was also under 2:00 after a tough leadout duty in the Bizzarri Mile. The Mile, was great! We had a great crowd, tons of energy and a superb effort by Nick Grismer in a new personal best and near school record. The 3200 was a great battle with 4 Comets under 10:00. They were led by Justin Koehler who placed well and earned a GMC spot. The field events had Donald Hefelfinger getting a new PR in the shotput and an epic night in the long jump with Jeron Besecker and Reece Pontious both over 21’7” on the night. The pole vault saw a new PR by Josh Huber at 12 feet and the high jump featured Vince Jackson placing 3rd overall at 6’2”. Overall, it was a great night with many new personal bests, a new school record and near perfect conditions. The team won the overall team title with the “B” team coming in not far behind at 4th overall, placing in front of many GMC rivals. Next up Mason will host the GMC Championships on Wednesday and Friday. The boys will be seeking their 8th overall GMC title. Finals are scheduled for Friday, May 15th on the Mason track beginning at 4:00 PM. |
|
5/13-5/15 | GMC Championships @ Mason | 1st place | Mason Track Teams Continue GMC Domination
Next up for the Mason Track and Field Teams is the District Championships hosted at Mason this Wednesday, May 20th and Friday, May 22nd. The boys will be seeking their 6th overall district title.
|
5/20-5/22 | OHSAA District @ Mason | BOYS ACHIEVE 6TH DISTRICT TITLE Last Friday night at the District Championship the track men of Mason looked great! The Comets had several champions, a few runner ups and a nice trophy at the end of the night. Mason outdistanced 2nd place finisher St. Xavier by 88 points (164-76) to win their 6th overall District Title. The top four in each event qualified to Regionals. The meet started well with our field events scoring big and placing. Rook (2nd in the pole vault) Helfelfinger, 2nd in the Shot put and Vince Jackson was 3rd in the High Jump. They all moved on to Regionals and did great. Then on the track, the boys lit it up! They started off with the 110 hurdles where Andrew Boeres ran a personal best time, and placed 3rd, then Jeron Besecker was 1st in the 100 dash with a great time and a nice effort. The 4x200 team of Pearson, Belcastro, Borden and Maity rolled to a very fast time and a 2nd place finish behind Withrow. The 1600 saw both Joe Thistleton and Jake Bauer place in the top 4 to advance and the 4x100 moved on with a few key cogs missing in action. Next was the 400 dash where Amit Maity set a new district record and won big, with David Borden not far behind in 3rd. The 300 hurdles was also fun with Andrew Boeres again moving on to regionals in 3rd place. The 200 dash was great fun with Nick Pearson winning and Jake Belcastro placing third to advance. In the 3200, the return of Nick Grismer occurred, but he was out leaned at the line by Tommy Stewart who would not be denied. Lastly was the 4x400 relay, and it was a great finish to the night. The Mason boys ROLLED to a state leading time of 3:16.28 and set a new district record! They just missed our school record by one tenth! They looked great as the squad of Borden, Belcastro, Pearson and Maity battled for the win and set the track on fire in the process. It was a great night and a great team effort. The boys look poised to do well at Regionals on Wednesday and Friday at Dayton's Welcome Stadium. For complete results of Regionals click here. |
|
5/27-5/29 | Regionals @ Welcome Stadium | BOYS TRACK 2ND AT REGIONAL After day one of the Regional Track and Field meet at Welcome Stadium last Wednesday, the Comets were in a bit of a bind. The injury bug hit the team and they suffered some tough misses. Jeron missed finals in the 100 dash by 3 one-thousanths of a second, missed long jump finals by 1 inch and Billy Rook missed state on attempts in the pole vault. The good news was that the 4x800 got out, Maity looked great and the alternates did their jobs very well. Day 2 the team looked much better. The 4x200 boys made it out. It was not that pretty, but they got the job done and placed 2nd. Amit Maity got 2nd in the 400 dash and broke his own school record. Joe Thistleton made it out in the 1600 and set a new PR. The 4x100 men raced valiantly, but just missed a state berth and placed 6th. As for our field events, Vince Jackson had a tough day at the office in HJ, but had a great season, and Donald Hefelfinger placed 6th in the shot put. The 200 dash saw Nick Pearson do well, and qualify to state placing 3rd while Nick Grismer made a great comeback and won the 3200 in a near best time with a very strong last lap of 64 seconds. The last race of the night was the 4x400, where the team of Amit Maity, Jake Belcastro, Matt Miller and Nick Pearson ran out of their minds to win it all and qualify to state. Matt Miller (sophomore) stepped up big as we had not 1, but 2 guys out for this relay, and he filled in quite well. Overall the team nabbed the 2nd place trophy behind Northwest HS. The OHSAA Division Track Meet begins Friday, June 5 at OSU's Jesse Owens Stadium. Finals are slated for Saturday, June 6th. Great job to all who competed, and a special congrats to those that moved on to state. |

The team of Maity, White, Pearson and Jake Belcastro placed well in the preliminary race setting the stage for an exciting final. Reece Pontious brought it home to anchor the relay in grand fashion for the win. Over 100 Mason football players were there to witness the celebration. "The state meet is always a thrill," said Mason boys head coach Chip Dobson. "This year, was no exception. It was truly a great experience." The meet started off with the 4 x 800 doing well, and the team of Dugger, Thistleton, Grismer and Morris placing 7th in a tough field with a season best time. Nick Pearson just missed qualifying for finals by a tenth of a second in the 200 dash. The final day of competition saw Amit Maity place third in the 400 dash, a new school record. Nick Grismerwas great in the 3200, placing 4th overall with a new best time. Joe Thistleton was able to secure 13th place in the 1600 in a new best time. The 4x400 relay was a real heartbreaker for the Comets. The team was rolling to a season best time, a school record and a possible top 5 all-time state time when an unfortunate slip and fall occurred. The team of Jake Belcastro, Amit Maity, David Borden and Nick Pearson amazingly clawed their way back to a respectful 4th place finish. The Comets were able to earn enough points to become state runner-ups in the team standing and the right to stand atop the podium and hoist a trophy. This is a first for Mason Boys Track and Field and a great accomplishment for the program. Pickerington North was the overall team champion. " Great job to all who competed and to a great coaching staff," commented Dobson. "It was a fun season and an honor to be a part of such a great team."
