3/26 | Colerain | lost | 3-2 | 0-3 | stats | The Mason Comets hit the field for the official start of the 2012 season on Monday. The Colerain Cardinals travelled to Mason for the first matchup of the year between the two GMC Conference foes. The game was a nail biter to the end, and unfortunately, Mason fell 3-2 to the Cards in 11 innings.
Mason had 8 hits on the day – including a dramatic 2 run Home Run in the bottom of the 7th inning off the bat of junior, Alex Johnson. With the Comets down 2-0 in the bottom of the 7th inning – and down to their final out, senior third baseman Claire Wehby extended the inning with a single into center field. Johnson then launched an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence that tied the score at 2-2.
Timely hitting was missing for the Comets in this game. Although they had 8 hits on the day… they were unable to string hits together and rally against the Cards Pitcher. Two different innings Mason had their leadoff hitter reach second base, but came away with no runs. The pitching was solid for both teams – with both teams scoreless until the 6thinning. Mason will regroup and come back Tuesday against Glen Este.

Timely hitting and better base running are going to be required in the tough GMC Conference. Mason had several opportunities to take advantage of walks and defensive miscues by Hamilton – but failed to capitalize. Sophmore right fielder, Hannah Mizener, is off to a good start this season contributing two more hits on the day for Mason. The Comets will face Middletown on Friday. 4/5 | Lakota East | lost | 5-4 | 5-4 | 4-2 | stats | Coming off the 11 inning 2-1 win at Fairfield on Wednesday, the Mason Comets made the short road trip to Lakota East on Thursday for a matchup of two of the top programs in the GMC Conference. Both teams brought 4-1 conference records into the matchup. Although Mason grabbed an early lead and held it into the 7th inning – it was a one out single that drove in the tying and winning runs that enabled Lakota East to steal the victory. Lakota East 5…Mason 4. Mason jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore outfielder, Hannah Mizener, was hit by a pitch to start the game. Alex Johnson, Mason’s junior first baseman, then sacrificed her to second. Seniors, Jillian Richardson and Margo Hutchison, then added back to back singles. After consecutive errors by Lakota East allowed Sami Parave and Sarah Browning to reach base – Mason had taken an early 3-0 lead, and appeared ready to put Lakota East away early. With only one out and runners at the corners – East was able to turn an inning ending double play on an attempted steal of second base and a return throw to home to nail the runner trying to advance from third. Mason’s rally was ended and they went on to score only once more on the day. Lakota East scored single runs in the first and fifth inning. They scored three times in the bottom of the 7thinning for the come from behind win. Mason played a sound game but lost a tough one. 4/13 | Mt. Healthy Invite | no placing | The team sent a young sprinter crew, and a veteran distance crew to Mount Healthy where they were up against a strong contingent of teams. The men were led by Alex Notton who placed first in the 3200 run. The boys of the 4x800 did well, with Paul “D” running a solid split against a loaded field, only to come back in the 800 open and run even better. In the 1600 the men were led by Tom Clark, who placed third overall, setting a new personal best time. The sprinters gathered a few points here and there, with the strongest showing coming from the 4x400 team of Stehm, Borden, Klapproth and Valentine. These young men hung tough with the big boys of the city and placed a solid 5th out of 17 without many of our team’s top 400 runners. Overall it was a strong showing with many men stepping up big all over town. |
4/13 | Lebanon Relays | 1st place | The team did quite well at the Lebanon relays this weekend. They brought a split squad of younger distance runners and veteran sprinters, and were able to muster a win out of this lineup place first overall. (both of which won) Other standouts were Felix Moldanado in the shot put, who had the longest throw of the day, along with Juan Cummings who ran in four events, and was a winner in 3 of the four. Adam Court had another stellar outing placing first overall in the 300 hurdles and doing quite well in his shuttle hurdle relays as well, where he became part of a new school record. The distance boys lit it up in the 4x1600, with an all youngling squad, that was able to take it to Lakota East and their crew. All in all, it was a solid outing with many PRs and strong showings. We look for great things from many of these men in the future, as they showed great promise in this event. Next up the Mason track teams will make their annual trip to the Volunteer Classic in TN next weekend. |

Bradley Wier did well in the Triple Jump as did John Deaton in the pole vault. Reece Pontius continues to impress in the Long Jump, 4x200 and the pole vault. We also had a strong showing from Harry Taylor in the 400 and Chris Stem in the short sprints. Overall, it was a great meet with many positives for the boys who attended. |
4/26-4/27 | Wayne Invite | Our varsity A team traveled to WAYNE to compete in the Wayne Invitational on Thursday and Friday. They did quite well placing 2nd overall, behind the extremely strong Huber Heights Wayne team. The highlights of the meet were the 4x100 meter relay that won, and shattered the school record. The team of Chanatry, Dooley, Liu and Cummings beat all comers in this loaded field with the state’s 6th fastest time. The team also did well in the 4x200 relay with nearly the same crew plus Adam Court and took 2nd behind Thurgood Marshall in that relay. The 3200 (2 Mile) guys did great as well. Alex Notton and Tom Clark placed 2nd and 5th respectively in a loaded field of heavy distance hitters. Josh Dooley won the long jump (again) and Leslie Pil placed well in the pole vault. Next up is the prestigious Mason (Rod Russell) Invitational this Friday at Atrium stadium. The field is loaded with a bevy of talent and features some the best runners in the state. |

5/9-5/11 | GMC Championships @ Mason | 1st place | The Mason Track programs continued their league championship streaks last Friday with both the Comet boy's and girl's teams winning their 5th straight GMC titles. The Comets have won the conference track meet every year since joining the league (2007-08). The boy's blew away 2nd place Sycamore, winning by an almost 70 point margin (164-97.5) and the Mason girl's finished with 148.5 points to the Aves 128.5 total. Next up Mason will host the OHSAA District Track and Field Championships on Wednesday and Friday. The first four finishers in each district event will qualify for the Regional Championships in Dayton the following week. |
5/16, 5/18 | DISTRICT @ Mason |
1st place | The District track meet at Mason in 2012 was the best of times, and the worst of times. After a rocky start in the 4x100 relay, and an unfortunate DQ it appeared the Mason Comets shook their demons with many great performances. At the finals, the team won the first 5 events of the day, and nearly won the 6th. The team had winners in the 100, Josh Dooley, 110 Hurdles, Asad Maiden, Pole Vault, Leslie Pil and High Jump, Asad Maiden again. The team also won the 4x200 relay, with Liu, Chanatry, Court and Cummings. On Wednesday the team garnered a few points with the 2nd place 4x800 team and the winning long jump by Josh Dooley. Freshman sensation Reece Pontious also qualified to regionals with a leap of just over 20 feet. The team qualified Alex Notton in the 1600 and Zach Taylor in the 400 meter dash. Toward the end of the night the team was rolling with well over 100 points, and after a double qualification by Liu and Cummings in the 200, they were on their way to a team title. (the 4th in 5 years) Tom Clark then qualified in 4th with a new PR in the 3200 and the end of the night looked bright with the city’s top 4x400 ready to line up for a hopeful victory. After 2 legs the team was slightly ahead, but disaster struck and a baton was bobbled. Fortunately after a quick pick up, Robert Diehl took off and brought the team back into the mix, with Ethan Valentine closing the deal for 3rd and a trip to Dayton the coaches could breathe easy again. Overall, it was a true team effort scoring big in almost every event. The team actually won 6 events, and had a few 2nds as well. It was a great night, with only a few heart stopping moments. |
5/25 | REGIONALS @ Welcome Stadium |
4th place | The Mason boys did quite well at the Dayton Regional meet with 2 relays and 3 individuals moving on to the state meet. Mason finished 4th overall. The 4x800 relay was solid with Notton, Paul D, Mumma and Valentine running to a third place finish and qualifying to the state meet. The surprise of the meet was JOSH DOOOOOOLEY, who made it in the 100 dash. This may be Mason’s first 100 meter dash state meet participant in as long as anyone could remember. (boys) Asad Maiden ran to a solid 3rd and qualified in the 110 Hurdles as did Alex Notton in the 1600 who also placed 3rd. The men of the 4x200 were up against a stacked field and just missed by .05 seconds behind some of the leaders in the whole state of Ohio. Tom Clark was also a close 5th in the 3200, just missing a state berth. The final race of the night, the 4x400 saw great excitement and the team of Zach Taylor, Adam Court, Ethan Valentine and Robert Diehl moved on securing their trip to state in a solid 3rd place finish. The team had other placers in Juan Cummings and Josh Dooley in the 200 Dash and Long jump respectively, and a few that competed, but did not place. MASON BOY'S STATE QUALIFIERS Adam Court Overall the team came in a respectable 4th place overall in the team scoring, and had a good showing as we prepare to move onto the state meet. This year the Comets brought 9 athletes, 2 relays and 3 individuals competitors to this prestigious event. The team did well, we placed 5 boys on the podium, and just missed with a few others. The highlights were: making it to finals in the 4x400, scoring in the 1600 and 4x800. Unfortunately, during the fiThe lowlight was some Hilliard guy knocking the baton out of our hand in the finals of the 4x400! Darn! Well…. That is track and field, what can you do?? The team also did well with other individuals, Josh Dooley and Asad Maiden ran well in their first trip up to state, but came up just short of the finals. Overall, it was a great season. GMC title, District Title, Coaches Classic title and ranked #1 in the city all year. Not a bad year. A few things fell our way, a few did not, but in the end, the men worked well, they were a competitive group and had a lot of fun in the process. "I am honored and humbled to be a part of such a great group of men," head coach Chip Dobson. |

"When you start out the season against the defending state champions, you don't expect much, but what I saw today was a team that is really buying in to what we are coaching. They are executing very well for the first game of the year, and I believe it is a tremendous start to what will be a great season", said Limpert. 4/7 | @ Mariemont | lost | 13-7 | 1-2 | On Saturday, April 7th, Mason took on DII powerhouse Mariemont and found out that lacrosse dominance isn't secluded to DI teams. Mariemont propelled themselves to the top ranking in the state by jumping on top of Mason early and staying there all game. The final score was 13-7 Mariemont. Trista Kuehn had 7 saves in goal. Ground balls were controlled by sophomores Casey Lawson and Allie Specht with 5 each. Casey Lawson led draw controls with 3, supported by senior Captain Courtney Curtis, Allie Specht, and junior Kaitlyn McGowan with 2 each. Scoring was led by 3 players, Courtney Curtis, Allie Specht, and sophomore Tori Blakeman with 2 goals each. Coach Limpert put the game into perspective for the team, indicating that this was a learning experience for the Comets who will take it and use it to improve, as the schedule doesn't get any easier from here on out. "We put the two best Division II teams in the city on the schedule for a reason as both of them could compete for a state championship at the DI level if they had the enrollment to do so. We will continue to schedule the best teams possible to ensure that come playoff time we have experienced and conquered our fears. Our goal is, and always has been, to focus on what it takes to get this team ready for the playoffs. Wins are only important if they serve to help us improve. Losses often help us achieve our goal as well as wins. The Mariemont loss will prove to be a successful game for us when we use it to improve, and that is what we will do," said Limpert. Next up, the Lady Comets take on perennial club state champions Anderson High School on April 12 at Anderson. |

Scoring was led by Allie Specht with 5 points on 3 goals and 2 assists and she was followed by Kylie Yancey who had 4 points on 4 goals. Obviously coming away from the weekend 1-3 and being 3-6 overall was not where Coach Limpert had hoped to be at this point in the season, but evidently there is reason for hope; "we make no excuses for a 3-6 record, we had expected to be better at this point, but we are not disheartened by this because with what we have learned we know we will be much better going forward. The win against Montini was a good way to end the weekend and we will take that win, and the lessons we have learned, and be much better from here on out". Coach Limpert was satisfied with the performance saying; "we started a bit slow, but we finished strong and we didn't let up at the end. The girls had fun tonight because they played the way they are capable of playing, in the end, that is all I care about, the wins will take care of themselves". Leading all scorers were junior Sarah Greensfelder who had 5 points on 4 goals and 1 assist, and Courtney Curtis and sophomore Allie Specht who had 4 points each on 4 goals each. The win was key for Mason as the tournament seeding meeting will be held this coming Sunday. Coach Limpert emphasized its importance saying; "this win should assure us a 3 seed in the DI South conference and that is a good thing because it allows us to position ourselves well for a good run deep into the tournament". The Comets next face top ranked Upper Arlington away on Saturday, May 5th. |
|||||||||||||||||
5/5 | @ Upper Arlington | lost | 14-11 | 5-6 | On Saturday, May 5th, the Lady Comets traveled to Columbus to challenge the #2 ranked Upper Arlington Golden Bears and came up 3 goals short in an exciting but ultimately losing effort, falling 14-11. After a slow start the Lady Comets distinguished themselves in the end by coming back in the second half to keep the game in doubt until the end. Coach Limpert reflected on what the loss means; "We have played the toughest schedule in the state and faced all of the top competition we can expect to see in the tournament. We've lost to many of them by only one goal so we are very close to where we need to be at this point. Our emphasis going into tournament is and remains draw control, when we possess the ball we do good things with it and we control the pace and direction of the game. When we get this fixed, we are going to be tough to beat!". The Comets next play St Ursula Academy away on Tuesday, May 8th. |
