On their home course on a perfect day, the Mason Varsity finished 3rd as a team establishing themselves as the best team at the meet from southwest, OH by just 1 point over LaSalle. Hilliard Davidson outscored Mason by 17 points for the 2nd place finish and the nationally-ranked boys from Carmel, IN scored just 23 points as the meet champions. Mason’s top finishers were junior Alex Notton followed by sophomore Tom Clark. Both moved up well throughout the race. Sophomore Zac Thompson stepped up today and finished 3rd for Mason followed by freshman Nick Grismer. Grismer may be a freshman but he certainly doesn’t race like it; he has been improving each race this season. 5th for Mason was sophomore Steve Yates. Brett Sanders and Ethan Valentine round out the top 7 for Mason. Also competing on varsity today for Mason were Joey Stimler (11), Matt Buchko (12) and Nick Whimore (11). Mason put 6 runners under 17:00 to beat out all the competition at last Saturday's, Alliance Invitational. Every Mason Varsity finisher ran a season best time. Junior Alex Notton led for Mason and worked his way up throughout the race to establish a good position to outkick two key runners from other schools. He finished 7th in 16:16 moving him up #9 on the Mason All-Time Performance List. Next was sophomore Tom Clark in 15th followed by freshman Nick Grismer in 19th, with another great performance. Joey Stimler, a junior, finished next with nearly a minute improvement from his previous best performance. And the all-important 5th and final scorer for Mason was sophomore Steve Yates in 25th. Not to be outdone, the JV runners swept both races, occupying places 1-5 in the 9th/11th grade race and places 1-7 in the 10th/12th grade race. 9/24 | Culver Academy | 11th place | The Mason Comets traveled to one of the best cross country venues in the Midwest. They competed at the Culver Invitational against the greatest of Indiana’s cross country programs (and incidently some of the best programs in the Midwest), namely, Columbus North, Carmel, North Central. Also at the meet from OH were Centerville, Louisville and Sylvania Northview. Mason was overpowered by the Indiana schools but was the first OH school (11th place), beating Centerville by 40 points. Top scorer was junior Alex Notton, followed by sophomore Tom Clark, junior Joey Stimler and Nick Grismer finished together followed by junior Connor Van Blaricom in the 5th spot for Mason. Sophomores Zac Thompson and Steve Yates were 6th and 7th man for Mason today. Next up is the state previw meet, the Midwest Meet of Champions on Saturday, Oct. 1st. |

The Mason boys ran well against very strong competition and very epic conditions and the Midwest Meet of Champions on Saturday, Oct. 1st. . A cold, windy, wet, muddy and slightly misty course awaited the competitors. While it’s normally a fast course, the conditions eliminated hopes of fast times and made it about beating people. The Comets 4th place finish was impressive, just 1 point out of 3rd place. All varsity runners finished in front of Lakota West’s 3rd finisher, giving us the 30 point cushion of the next southwest OH school in the meet. While Alex Notton, Tom Clark and Joey Stimler got the job done up front, finishing in 14th, 33rd and 38th respectively, senior Brett Sanders pulled his pack along (Van Blaricom, Grismer and Ryan Sanders) and finished 4th man for Mason. Next up for the Comets is the GMC Championships on Oct. 15th at VOA. |

8/22 | Sycamore Invite | |||
8/27 | Brian Plasman Inv. | 1st place | This Saturday the lady Comets were in action at the Fairfield “Brian Plassman” invite. They fared well, but were met with very stiff competition in the team of St. Ursula. The Bulldogs of SUA gave the Comets everything they could handle, but our ladies were able to beat them by one single point! ONE POINT in cross country is the smallest margin possible, and represents just one person, passing one other person. This means every girl, every team member, every Comet was huge today! The team was led by LAUREN WOOD! Yes, Lauren Wood, who last year was not even close to varsity, this year started the season off with a huge day by leading the Comets in their efforts against the all comers at the hilly confines of the Fairfield XC course. Lauren had a PR (personal record) on this very tough course, and was followed by Bridget McElhenny and Tori Martin, all of whom placed in the top 10 of this strong field. Our next scorer was Maddy Baehre, who had a great day, and rounding out our scorers was Mackenzie Jensen, in her second race in 5 days. Overall, the team ran well, they placed our whole top 7 in the top 20 of the field, and many girls had great days. The team looks to be solid this year, with great depth as well. In the JV race, the team took the first 11 spots, and scored a rare perfect score overall, putting another 15 girls in the next 20 spots. All in all, it was a great outing for the Comets. Next week they will be in action at Hillard in the Hot Summer Bash against some very tough teams from up North. Go Comets. |
|
9/3 | Hot Summer Bash @ Hiliard Davidson | 1st place | The Comets were in action this weekend at Hilliard Bradley High School at the “HOT SUMMER BASH.” The race, aptly named, took place at 11:00am for the varsity girls and they were “HOT!” The temperature was over 90 degrees with high humidity when the gun went off. The team ran smart and hard, saving some of their energy for the ladder half of the race, and it paid off. The team rolled through the mile in roughly 2-3rd place overall, but by the two mile they had taken charge. When it was all said and done, they crushed the competition, with a very low score of only 30 points, beating a tough field of Medina, Sylvania Northview, Hilliard Davidson and Sycamore. The team was led (for a while) by Monica Lake who actually passed out due to the heat. She looked great, but the heat got to her. (she is fine now) After that happened, Tori Martin took charge and led the Comets by placing 2nd place overall, with Bridget McElhenny not far behind in 3rd. After that, Freshman, Delaney McDowell sprinted to a 5th place finish, with Laruen Wood in 6th just seconds behind. The team scoring was rounded out by Mackenzie Jensen in 14th place, completing our scoring unit and racking up another big win for the Comets. The “Varsity B” girls also got to run in the varsity race. This team was led by Mere Touby, who ran to a great time and great place overall. They also got support from newcomer Nicole Steinbricker and Bri Manns who ran quite well too. Overall, it was a great day for the Comets. The Varsity A girls placed 1st and the B team placed 7th. Unfortunately the JV girls were not able to run due to the heat. The paramedics saw one too many people and they shut the meet down. Next week it is the Mason Invitational. The team will get all they can handle from a super strong field including Carmel, Springboro, Beavercreek and others. It should be a great meet...PLEASE COME OUT AND SUPPORT THE COMETS! |

Jacquelyn Crow 10 Lebanon 18:14 | The Mason Girl's CC Team finished 2nd at the Alliance Invitational, six points from 1st place Springboro. Monica Lake was 2nd overall with a time of 18:16. See summary below: 1 2 Monica Lake 12 18:16 2 6 Lauren Wood 11 19:15 3 9 Bridget McElhenny 12 19:24 4 13 Mackenzie Jensen 12 19:46 5 17 Delaney McDowell 9 19:57 6 ( 19) Madalyn Baehre 11 20:03 7 ( 20) Ashley Calvani 11 20:08 The girls cross country team had some ups and downs this weekend. While the Varsity girls were disappointed with a close second place finish to Springboro, overall it was a great day for personal bests. The Varsity girls were led by senior Monica Lake who was second overall, running an 18:16. Lauren Wood was the number two runner for the Varsity girls. She ran a personal best of 19:15 and continues to improve every week. Bridget McElhenny (19:24), Mackenzie Jensen (19:46), and Delaney McDowell (19:57) were the remaining scorers for the Varsity team. A Varsity B team also ran in the Varsity race for Mason. These girls beat out many Varsity teams with a 5th place finish. The jv girls won the open race with only 22 points. Katelyn Reckers led this group with a personal best time of 21:22 and was followed closely by Katelyn Cain with a 21:24. Maggie Owens and Brooke Rawson also had great races. Owens ran a 21:32 and Rawson ran a personal best of 21:33. |
9/24 | Culver Academy | 3rd place | This past weekend at the Culver Inivte the Mason Girls Cross Country team did very well. They were led by Monica Lake who set a new personal best of 18:08, followed by Bridget McElhenny who also did very well, follwed closely behind by the ever-improving Lauren Wood. These three ladies ran "lights out" and helped the Comets to a close 3rd place finish behind the very strong Indiana team of Columbus North. It was so close in fact that it was a tie through the 5th runner, requiring a very rare 6th runner tie breaker to determine the score. The girls also had strong showings from Tori Martin, Mackenzie Jensen and Delaney McDowell, and the final runner on the varsity squad who also broke 20 minutes was Maddie Baehre. This was the best the girls have run yet, and a nice step forward on their quest to be the best. The JV girls also did quite well with Bethany Angstadt leading the charge in the JV race, followed closely behind by newcomer to Ohio, Nicole Steinbicker. All in all it was a great trip and a strong showing for the ladies. Next up is the state previw meet, the Midwest Meet of Champions on Saturday, Oct. 1st. |

9/27 | Kings Inv. | |||
10/1 | Midwest Meet | 1st place | The Mason ladies tore up the course at Hilliard Davidson on Saturday place 1st at the prestigious event. The team was led by Monica Lake who took 4th place overall. She was followed closely behind by Lauren Wood and then Bridget McElhenny, both of whom placed in the top 15 of this prestigious meet of Champions. After that, the ladies fourth and fifth runners of the day were Tori Martin and Mackenzie Jensen. Not scoring, but displacing many other runners were Maddie Baehre and Delaney McDowell who both turned in solid performances on this rain soaked, muddy course. The ladies won the meet over the state’s top ranked teams and began to lay a nice foundation toward the post season racing. A few of the top teams were not too far back, but the Mason ladies took care of business on this very difficult day. The team also enjoyed a display of depth as the ladies won both the Freshman race and the Open race in resounding fashion. Next up are the GMC Championships at VOA on Saturday, October 15. |

Not long after this trio came Tori Martin (eight), who ran a blazing 19:15. Mason's final scorer was Mackenzie Jensen who finished eleventh overall. The final two runners in the top seven were newcomer Nicole Steinbicker and Maddie Baehre. These girls ran great, and helped the cause by pushing back many teams 3rd and 4th runners. Senior wide receiver Kevin Niehoff made five catches for 57 yards and a touchdown. “We are happy to be 1-0 but we know we have Lancaster (Columbus, OH) won their division last year, a 50th Anniversary Game (50th year). This senior class deserves to be 1-0, they really worked hard,” said Mason coach Brian Castner. “I’m happy for them but we need to be ready for Lancaster." (quoted to Cincinnati Enquirer). The Comets will host Lancaster this coming Friday night at Atrium Stadium. |
game stats |
9/2 | LANCASTER | lost | 41-35 | 1-1 | 0-0 | The Comets played before a capacity crowd on Friday Sept. 2 at Dwire Field at Atriium Stadium. Unfortunately, visiting Lancaster rallied from a 28-14 second-half deficit and outlasted Mason 41-35 in overtime. Mason looked to be in the drivers seat with a 14 point lead and the ball after recovering a Lacaster fumble in the end zone. But the Gales (2-0) scored 21 unanswered points to grab a 35-28 lead with 3:42 to play. The Comets (1-1) answered with a clutch drive to the knot the game with 1:06 left. Quarterback JD Sprague hit Kevin Niehoff on a fade pattern in the right corner of the end zone on a fourth-and-12 play from the Lancaster 19-yard line. The touchdown pass and Marcus Otte’s subsequent tied the game at 35 and sent the game into OT. In overtime, Mason stalled and didn’t get any points when they muffed the snap on an attempted field goal. Lancaster won it on when Ethan Bond scored on a 6-yard run.Mason QB JD Sprague finished 16-for-28 for 194 yards and two touchdowns passing. He also ran for three touchdowns and 79 yards. The Comets will visit Glenn Este on Friday, Sept. 9th. |

|
9/16 | @ Colerain | lost | 56-20 | 2-2 | 0-1 | The first and second halves were two different stories for the Comets as they fell to Colerain on Friday by a score of 56-20. Mason RB Darryl Johnson's 1-yard run with 4:13 left in the thrid quarter made the score 28-20 Colerain. But the Cardinal's struck for 4 straight TD's enroute to the win, while Mason did not get back on the scoreboard. Darry Johnson was a bright spot again forthe Comets rushing for 80 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. Mason will host Fairfield on Homecoming night this Friday, Sept. 23rd. |
|
9/23 | FAIRFIELD | won | 44-6 | 3-2 | 1-1 | The Mason Comets smashed Fairfield on Friday, Sept. 23rd by a score of 44-6. Mason (3-2, 1-1 GMC) held Fairfield (1-4, 0-2) to 122 total yards while the Comet offense ground out more than 370 yards, 230 on the ground. Mason’s defense sacked Fairfield quarterback Kyle Wheeler six times and batted down five passes while intercepting two. They even put points on the board when nose tackle Nick Lewis intercepted a pass and returned it 35 yards on the last play of the first quarter to give the Comets a 16-0 lead. Mason quarterback JD Sprague finished 6-of-9 for 121 yards passing with one touchdown, a 4-yard strike to tight end Zach Boden. Next up Mason will travel to Lakota East on Friday, Sept. 30th. |

The Comets put up 21 unanswered points after falling behind early in the game. Mason got a 43-yard TD run by Darryl Johnson in the first quarter. Johnson ran for another TD in the second quarter on a 8-yard scamper. JD Sprague's 4-yard pass to Zach Boden with 25 seconds left before the half put the Comets up for good. Sprague ran 5 yards for a TD in the fourth to complete the scoring. Johnson finished with 130 yards rushing while Sprague ran for 85 yards and was 12/16 passing for 118 yards. The Comets go to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the GMC. Next up the host Princeton on Friday, Oct. 7th.
|
|
10/7 | PRINCETON | won | 14-7 | 5-2 | 3-1 | JD Sprague’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Zach Boden with 6:34 remaining in the game lifted Mason to a hard-fought, 14-7 win over visiting Princeton on Friday. The Comets improved to 5-2 with the win — Mason’s third in a row —— and stayed within a game of Greater Miami Conference co-leaders Colerain and Sycamore. Princeton fell to 5-2 (2-2 GMC). Both teams were able to move the ball as the Comets and Vikings combined to roll up over 600 yards of offense but points were at a scarcity. Mason got on the board first on a 10-yard run by Matt Stewart with 8:32 left in the first quarter. The score remained 7-0 until early in the third quarter when Princeton’s Demarco Thomas caught a 10-yard TD pass from Nate McGill to tie the score. Darryl Johnson rushed for a game-high 222 yards on 27 attempts to lead the Comet offense while Sprague completed 5-of-11 passes for 73 yards with all five completions going to different receivers. The Comets will visit Oak Hills on Friday, Oct. 14th. |
|
10/14 | @ Oak Hills | won | 28-14 | 6-2 | 4-1 | Mason held Oak Hills scoreless in the second half while JD Sprague ran for one touchdown and threw for another to break a 14-14 tie at halftime and lift the Comets to a 28-14 win Friday night. Mason (6-2) stayed tied with Middletown and Sycamore — the Comets’ next two opponents — for second place in the Greater Miami Conference at 4-1. Oak Hills fell to 1-4 in the GMC, 3-5 overall. With the win Mason assures themselves of the team's first winning record since 2005 (7-3). Darryl Johnson, who rushed for 175 yards on 34 carries, gave the Comets an early with a 1-yard run late in the first quarter. But, Oak Hills answered just two minutes later on an 8-yard run by Demarco Ruffin. Ruffin scored again early in the second quarter to give the Highlanders a 14-7 lead. But that was all that Oak Hills would get. Mason’s defense held Ruffin to 70 yards (his second-lowest total of the season) on 18 carries and limited the Highlanders to 225 yards of total offense. The Comets were particularly effective on third down, as Oak Hills converted only 3-of-11 third down conversions. 11/5/11 | Regional Playoffs Mason (#6) vs St. Xavier (3) |
lost | 17-6 | 7-4 | 5-2 | Amonst 7 years to the date, Mason Fooballl returned to the OHSAA Regional Playoffs on Saturday, November 5th. It was the Comets first postseason appearance since November 6, 2004 when they were members of the FAVC, and lost an opening round game to Centerville (34-7). Mason (No. 6 seed) and St. Xavier (#3 seed) entered the contest with identical records at 7-3. The Comets season would disappointedly end this night with St. Xavier earning a 17-6 win to move on in the postseason. Mason took the opening drive down the field into Bomber terrritoy before a bad snap stallecd a Comet drive. The Mason defense stopped St. X on downs on their first drive. Mason started on their own 1 for their second offensive series and failed to earn a first down. The first quarter ended with no score. The Comet defense stopped St. X. on their next drive after the Bombers went for it on fourth and 10 from the Mason 25. The Comet offense once again went 3 and out on their next series. On the Bombers next series St. Xavier went 6 plays on 22 yards with 5:31 left in the 2nd quarter taking a 7-0 lead. Mason once again could not move the chains on their next possession. St. X went out on downs, but on Mason's next possession a Bomber interception with 22 seconds left in the half resulted in a St. X TD and a 14-0 lead going into halftime. The Bombers took the opening drive in the 2nd half to the Mason 11 yard line before converting a 28 yard field goal and expnading their lead to 17-0. Mason was forced to punt the ball away on their 1st 2nd half possession. The fourth quarter got underway with St. X still holding a 17-0 after both teams committed turnovers. Darryl Johnson put Mason on the board with a 19-yard run with 1 minute left in the game. The Comets season ended tonight but proved they can play with Cincinnati's elite teams. St. Xavier moves on to meet Colerian in the Regional Semifinals. The resurgence of the Mason Football program is underway with the team producing their best overall record in 2011 since the 2005 season when they went 7-3. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on a great season. |

lost | 1-0 4-2 PK's |
13-3-3 | 6-0-3 | Lady Comets Fall in District PK's The Mason Girls 2011 soccer season came to a close on Thursday evening in dramatic fashion at Monroe HS. After a marathon 110 minutes of field play and a round of penatlty kicks, Mason lost a heart-breaking 1-0 decision (4-2 PK's) to Centerville in the District Finals. Neither team was able to produce a goal during two 40 minute periods of regulation and two OT sessions. Centerville scored 4 of their penalty kicks and allowed only two to Mason to advance to next weeks regional competition. Coming into the game Centerville (16-1-2) had advanced in the tournament with postseason victories over Northmont and Miamisburg. The Comets (13-3-3) advanced with hard earned wins over Lebanon (1-0) and Loveland (2-1 OT). In the first half Mason demonstrated an offensive advantage with constant pressure on the Elk defense. Centerville's All-State keeper, Halle Pyle, kept the Comets off the scoreboard with several outstanding saves. The Mason defense shutdown Centerville scorers limiting them with few opportunites to put a goal in the net. Mason had a flurry of scoring chances in the last minutes of the opening half but could not find the back of the net (0-0). The 2nd half duplicated the play of both teams in the first half. Mason found fewer chances to score as the Centerville defense tightened. Regulation play ended 0-0 and went to a 15 minute sudden death overtime to determine the winner. Centerville went on the offensive early in the first OT period. The Mason defense was good enough to counter the Elk scoring threats. Mason created havoc in the Centerville box in the final seconds of the 1st OT, but once again Halle Pyle the Elk keeper put on a clinic turning several Mason shots away and sending the teams to a second 15 minute OT period. Once again neither team could score during the 2nd OT even though there was plenty of outstanding plays and tremendous effort. The outcome would be decided by penalty kicks. See PK summary below: --Centervilles 1st PK was good 1 (0-1) --Mason's 1st PK was blocked (0-1) --Centervilles 2nd PK was good (0-2) --Mason's 2nd PK was blocked (0-2) --Centervilles 3rd PK was missed (0-2) --Mason's 3rd PK was good (1-2) --Centervilles 4th PK was good (1-3) --Mason 4th PK was good (2-3) --Centervilles 5th PK was good (2-4) --Mason no attempt (2-4) The girl's end a tremendous season with a final overall record of 13-3-3.
