3/28 | @ Colerain | won | 6-2 | 1-0 | 1-0 | stats | The Comets opened their 2011 season on the road against the Colerain Cardinals on Monday, March 28th. The game time temperature of 43 degrees made it a cold Opening Day for softball, but Coach Muff had the Varsity team ready to play. The Comets got on the board early as Sami Hayner scored from third base on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. The Cards came right back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. The score remained at 2-1 until the 5th inning. Sami Parave opened the 5th with a walk. A bunt single by Hayner put runners at first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners over, Jillian Richardson hit a deep fly ball that enabled Parave to score from third and tie the game at 2-2. The score remained tied until the top of the 7th inning. Parave and Hayner opened the inning with a walk and a bunt single. Claire Wehby then bunted up the first base line and Parave slid in safely at home to put Mason ahead 3-2. Jillian Richardson then capped off the scoring with a 3 run Home Run over the right field fence. Her opposite field homer put the game away. Richardson had 4 RBI’s on the day. Senior Pitcher, Caitlyn Rausch, did a nice job of settling in after the first inning, and shut down the Cards the rest of the way. Rausch finished the day with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. 3/29 | @ Kings | won | 5-1 | 2-0 | 1-0 | stats | The Mason Comets beat the Kings Knights on Tuesday, by a score of 5-1. Played once again in very cold temperatures, this game was a tight contest until the 6th inning. With the score tied 1-1 going into the top of the 6th, Mason took advantage of some walks, some wild pitches, and a single by sophomore second baseman Alex Johnson to push across 4 runs and take the lead for good. Junior catcher, Margo Hutchinson had an RBI single in the first inning that helped Mason take an early 1-0 lead. Junior pitcher, Sarah Browning, had a very good outing, holding Kings to only 3 hits on the day. The Comet’s defense performed well behind her, allowing only two King’s base runners to reach second base on the day. Mason is now 2-0 to start the season and will face the Hamilton Big Blue in a GMC Conference clash on Wednesday at Mason’s varsity field. Leaders: Pitching Browning: 7 innings, 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, 3 hits, 1 earned run Hitting Johnson: 1-3, 2 RBI, run scored Hutchison: 1-2, 1 RBI, run scored Richardson: 1-3, double |
3/30 | Hamilton | won | 4-1 | 3-0 | 2-0 | stats | The 2011 Comets are proving to be a team that takes a few innings to get warmed up. Perhaps the cold weather has been a factor, but all three of the Comet wins this season have come with the bulk of their runs being scored in the 6th and 7th innings. On Thursday the Mason defense played well again, allowing junior pitcher, Sarah Browning, to take a no-hit bid into the 7th inning against Hamilton. Browning ran into some control issues in the 3rd inning, but a key unassisted double play turned in by freshman first baseman, Liz Hillen, ended the inning. This was another tight game that was scoreless going into the bottom of the 6th inning. Sophomore left fielder, Samantha Hayner, opened the bottom of the 6th inning with a slap hit out in front of the plate that she beat out for a hit. When junior third baseman, Claire Wehby, attempted to sacrifice Samantha to second base the throw sailed over the first baseman’s head and Mason had runners at the corners. Junior Shortstop, Jillian Richardson, bunted safely and Hayner scored from third base with Mason’s first run of the game. Liz Hillen then reached first base safely to load the bases. Sarah Browning then lined a single into centerfield scoring both Wehby and Richardson. Junior Catcher, Margo Hutchison, added an RBI later in the inning with a groundout to shortstop that knocked in Hillen with Mason’s 4th run of the inning. Hamilton scored their lone run in the top of the 7th inning. Mason begins the season 3-0 and is now 2-0 in GMC Conference play.

The Comets have now reeled off four straight wins to start the season under new Head Coach, Liann Muff. She struck out 12 Middletown batters while holding the Middies to 4 hits on the day. Junior third baseman, Claire Wehby, had a nice game - going 3 for 4 and making some nice plays at third. In the 4th inning Junior Catcher, Margo Hutchison, hit a towering solo home run over the right center field fence and into a biting wind. Freshman, Liz Hillen, added a 2 for 4 day for the Comets. In the 5th inning, senior right fielder, Lynsey Carr, helped cap the scoring for Mason when she hit a sharp single through the middle driving in Hillen from second base with the Comets' third run of the day. |

4/2 | Pickerington Central | lost | 1-0 | 5-1 | 3-0 | stats | The Mason Comets lost their first game of the season as Pickerington Central shut them out 1-0 on Saturday. The Comets challenged, but were unable to bring the tying run home from third base as the game ended. Junior pitcher, Sarah Browning, pitched well and held Pickerington Central hitless going into the 7th inning. The Mason team defense was solid again with several nice plays turned by senior shortstop, Caitlin Rausch.

The Lady Comets will host Fairfield on Wednesday, April 6th. |
4/6 | Fairfield | lost | 5-2 | 6-2 | 3-1 | stats | The Fairfield Indians traveled to Mason Wednesday for a game between the GMC’s only undefeated teams. Fairfield, with a 4-0 Conference record, and Mason at 3-0, led the GMC standings when play began on Wednesday. Channel 9 News was there and filmed footage of the game that was recapped on the 11:00 pm sports segment. Unfortunately the Comets fell by a score of 5-2. Unfortunately, for the Comets, it was not their day. The Indians picked up a run in the 3rd inning and then added 4 more in the 4th inning. Down 5-0, the Comets’ added their first run of the game in the 5th inning when freshman, Liz Hillen, doubled to left field and drove home Margo Hutchison who had walked earlier in the inning. In the 6th inning, Junior, Sarah Browning, drove in Mason’s second run when she doubled to the left field wall driving in junior, Jillian Richardson, who had singled and scored from first on Browning's hit. Fairfield moves to 5-0 in conference play and sits alone at the top of the GMC standings. Mason will regroup and gear up for another GMC match with Sycamore on Thursday. 4/7 | @ Sycamore (makeup) | won | 5-2 | 7-2 | 4-1 | stats | Late Rally Lifts Mason Past Sycamore for 5-2 Win! With two outs and the score tied 2-2 in the top of the 7th inning – it looked like Mason’s best hope for victory was going to be in extra innings. The Sycamore Aviators were playing a very good game marked by several defensive gems that robbed Mason of numerous hits and potential runs. Several times when it looked like Mason might bust the game open – Sycamore made a nice play to end a rally. These momentum swings would have taken the fight out of many teams, but the Comets kept battling. Nearly everyone in the Comet’s lineup had at least one hit today – with a season high team total of 13 on the day. Junior shortstop, Jillian Richardson, started the 2 out rally in the 7th with her third hit of the day. Junior pitcher, Sarah Browning, then broke the 2-2 tie by launching a towering blast over the left field wall for her first home run of the season. Back to Back doubles by Junior, Margo Hutchison, and freshman, Liz Hillen then capped the scoring for Mason. The Comets shut the door on the Aviators in the bottom of the 7th and went home with the 5-2 win. Leaders: Next up Mason visits Lakota East on Friday, April 8th. |
4/8 | @ Lakota East | lost | 3-2 | 7-3 | 4-2 | stats | Mason fell to Lakota East on Friday, April 8th by a score of 3-2. Last season the Lakota East Thunderhawks advanced to the State Semifinals. With several of their key players returning, including senior pitcher Sara Pearson, East is considered by many to be a favorite to win the D1 State Finals this season. On Friday, the Comets gave them all they could handle – and then some. Entering the game with a 9-1 record, Lakota East has been dominating their opponents by an average score of 9-1. When the Comets took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning, you got the sense that the Comets were giving them a bit more than they expected from Coach Muff’s young team. Junior Pitcher, Sarah Browning, backed by a typically strong Mason defense, showed grit and determination in nearly taking down their GMC Conference rival. The Mason defense was highlighted by several nice plays. Junior shortstop, Jillian Richardson made a nice running catch behind third base in the third inning. Sophomore second baseman, Alex Johnson, made a couple of stellar plays that included a diving catch to her right in the fourth inning, and an unassisted double play in the sixth inning. In the fourth inning, junior catcher, Margo Hutchison, used her rocket arm to help turn a nice double play from pitcher to catcher to first base to help end a scoring threat. The Comet’s offense picked up 5 hits on the day. Freshman, Liz Hillen, hit a key double into right field in the fourth inning that scored Mason’s 2 runs in the game. Junior third baseman, Claire Wehby, was hit in the helmet with a pitch that started that key fourth inning rally, and was forced to leave the game. Mason showed a lot of heart in the loss, and will use this game to continue to grow and build confidence as the season progresses. Next up Mason will host Oak Hills on Monday, April 11th, weather permitting. |

The Comets got off to a good start in the first inning when junior third baseman, Claire Wehby, singled and then scored on a double over the left fielder’s head by junior shortstop, Jillian Richardson. The Comets carried their 1-0 lead into the fifth inning, but Lakota West scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. The Comet’s offense was silenced after the first inning, and was never able to get any type of rally going the rest of the game. The Comets are now 4-3 in the GMC Conference. Leaders: Next up Mason will host Colerain on Friday, April 15th. |
4/15 | Colerain | lost | 4-2 | 7-5 | 4-4 | stats | The Colerain Cardinals scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning on Friday, April 15th and held on for a 4-2 win over the Mason Comets. The Cards jumped out in front of Mason in the first inning 1-0. Mason threatened in the 3rd inning when they had bases loaded and one out, but failed to score. The Comets did tie the game at 1-1 in the 4th inning when Senior, Ellen Boreing, singled into center field – driving in Mason’s first run of the game. Colerain took the lead again in the fifth inning on a solo home run and added two more runs in the top of the 7th inning. Down 4-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Mason scored one run when Sophomore Alex Johnson hit a 2 out triple into right center field and scored on a wild pitch. The Comets were unable to threaten any further and came up short to the Cards by a final score of 4-2.
Next up Mason will visit Hamilton on Monday, April 18th. |
4/18 | @ Hamilton | won | 8-5 | 8-5 | 5-4 | stats | The Mason Comets were able to put a “W” on the board Monday when they took down Hamilton’s Big Blue by a score of 8-5 on Monday, April 18th. The bats for both teams were silent early as neither team rallied until the fourth inning. Hamilton put 4 runs on the board in the 4th inning to take a 4-0 lead. Mason came right back and plated two of their own in the top of the 5th inning. Senior left fielder, Ellen Boreing and junior third baseman, Claire Wehby were on base via singles and scored on a throwing error from Hamilton’s third baseman to make the score 4-2. Mason rallied again in the 6th inning, scoring six times and did all of their damage with 2 outs. Freshman, Liz Hillen, opened the 6th inning with a walk. Then, after two outs were made, the Comets went to work. Boreing singled for the third time on the day. Senior, Caroline Hillen, had a clutch two out hit when she sent a solid line drive into center field driving in Mason’s third run. Wehby kept the inning alive when her grounder to third went off the fielder’s glove and the tying run scored. Junior shortstop, Jillian Richardson added Mason’s fifth run with a sacrifice fly. Junior Pitcher, Sarah Browning, then cleared the bases with her second home run on the season – scoring three more runs for the Comets. Mason held on for the 8-5 victory with their 8 runs scored marking a “high” for the season so far. Perhaps the team offense is starting to heat up for the Comets. Mason Competes in Kentucky 5 Star Classic The Mason Comets traveled to London, KY on Friday, April 22nd to compete in the two-day Kentucky 5 Star Classic, held at North Laurel and South Laurel High Schools. The Comets squared off against some of the top ranked teams from both Kentucky and Tennessee. The Comets played two pool games on Friday and another on Saturday before advancing to the single elimination tournament. In the first pool game on Friday they faced Mercy Academy – a team that finished as the runner up in the 2010 Kentucky State finals. Mason played well, but came up short – losing 3-0. In the night game Friday, Mason lost 6-1 to one of the top ranked schools from the state of Tennessee – Unicoi County. The Comets defeated Western Hills (KY) by a score of 11-2 in their final pool game at noon on Saturday. Mason then beat North Laurel 4-2 in the first round of the tournament and advanced the semifinal round. Mason’s last game on Saturday was an 11-5 loss to the same Mercy Academy team that they had faced on Friday. At a time when many other schools have been unable to play due to the weather conditions, Mason was able to play 5 games. The tournament enabled Coach Muff to utilize a lot of different players and lineup combinations against some very good competition.

Next up Mason will host Oak Hills on Friday, May 6th. Mason will visit Fairfield on Saturday, May 7th for a makeup game. The Mason Comets came into the game with hopes of beating their GMC rival Lakota East, and making things a little tighter in the GMC league standings. After losing a tight contest with the Thunderhawks earlier this season by a score of 3-2, the Comets were ready to make a big statement before heading into Sectional play beginning next week. Unfortunately, things did not play out that way for the Comets. The Comets went toe to toe with Lakota East through 5 innings – and the score remained locked at 0-0. East began knocking on the door in the 6th inning, but when they added 3 runs in the 7th inning, they had all the scoring that they needed. Lakota East senior pitcher, Sara Pearson, kept the Comet bats silenced all day. Mason was held hitless, and Pearson walked away with a perfect game. Mason’s GMC record is now 9-5. Both teams played great with neither defense giving in. There were great plays all over the field – and both pitchers going at it. Mason had several scoring threats, but just could not manage to bring the winning run across. The batting averages may have taken a beating yesterday, but this was a great game to watch. This tight contest may be a prelude to what we see in the next few days and hopefully weeks to come. The Mason Comets are ready for tournament action. Leaders: C. Rausch: 2 for 5 S. Junior catcher, Margo Hutchison, had a huge day, with 2 home runs and 5 RBI’s. Sophomore first baseman, Alex Johnson, and freshman outfielder, Tori Stewart, also homered for the Comets. Senior shortstop, Caitlin Rausch, junior pitcher, Sarah Browning, and freshman outfielder Sami Parave all had multiple hits for the Comets. The Comets have an overall record of 18-9. |

Liann Muff, in her first season as Head Coach, and the Softball Comets, will advance to their eighth consecutive District Final game this Friday. The Comets defeated the Sycamore Aviators by a score of 9-3 on Monday in the Sectional Final game that was held at Harrison High School. The game was actually a lot closer than the final score would seem to indicate. Mason fell behind early after the Aviators scored a run in the top of the second inning. Mason answered with a run in the bottom half of the second inning, and then added two more in the third inning. Sycamore pulled to within a run at 3-2 in the fifth inning. Mason then took control in the sixth inning, as they sent 12 batters to the plate. A combination of three Sycamore errors, three walks, and three Comet hits, led to six runs scored for Mason in the inning. Junior, Sarah Browning, hit a bases clearing triple into right center field that scored three runs. Junior, Margo Hutchison, followed with an RBI double, and the Comets were able to breathe a little easier. Mason will now advance to their eighth straight district final, where they’ll face fifth-ranked Glen Este (23-4) at 5 p.m. Friday at Lakota East High School. |

Gregory walked, stole second and scored on a throwing error on the steal attempt. Mason's Sarah Browning took a no-hitter into the sixth before allowing two singles. The Comet Softball season comes to an end for Coach Muff’s talented squad. The team played well all season long. The Comets should be proud of their accomplishments and excited about their future. 4/28-4/29 | Wayne Warriors Invite | The Mason men’s track team had a good showing up north at Wayne. The meet was epic, with 2 days and a lot of racing. Day one started off with a near school record shuttle hurdle team coming in 4th with Perez, White, Bratcher, and Maiden all making it happen. Then the squad of Pfander, Kolish, Kincaid and Notton ran a solid 3rd place DMR, and both Ted Liu and Josh Dooley made the finals of the 100 dash. Day two saw our 4x100 and 4x200 both placing in the top 5, along with a great 1600 PR by Tate Honaker (4:25.) The team also got great production out of Dooley in the Long Jump and Connor Noe in the triple jump as well as Adam Court in the 300 hurdles. All three of these men placed, and kept the team in a solid 4th place standing. The night was capped off with the #1 time in the state being run by Matt Kincaid in the 3200 meter run! A 9:16 2 mile took 1st place over the state runner up from cross country this fall. It was an awesome race, and Matt took the bull by the horns to win this one, with a 61 second last lap. The team also had a great showing from the 4x400 boys who ran their season best time and placed a respectable 3rd in this very strong field. Overall, the team made good progress forward and showed ourselves to be getting ready for the league meet in two weeks. Next up Mason will participate in the Kings Invitational on Tuesday, May 3rd. |

After the senior night festivities the 4x800 was off! The boys set a season best, and one of the top times in the state (team of Honaker, Notton, Mumma and Wills).. The 4x200 relay (Dooley, Liu, Chanantry, Court) did quite well, placing 2nd and setting a season best time as well. Adam Court won the men’s 400 dash with a sub 50 second performance and Matt Kincaid lit up the track again with a huge PR and winning time in the mile of 4:19.20!! The boys 4x100 and 4x400 did well also, as did Ted Liu and Asad Maiden who both placed in the 200 dash and 300 Hurdles respectively. At the end of the night the boys almost pulled off the win, after an impressive victory for Josh Dooley in the Long Jump, and a strong showing in the final events. The boys came within just 5 points of beating Wayne, who has been quite dominate this season around the state. Next up Mason will host the GMC Championships Wednesday through Friday at Atrium Stadium. |
5/11-5/13 | GMC Championships @ Mason |
1st place | Comet Boys Track Wins Fourth GMC Title The annual GMC Track and Field Championships have been all GREEN since Mason began competing in the 2007-08 season. Nothing was different after Friday's event at Atrium Stadium. The "Men From Mason" won another league title, continuing a streak that is beginning to rival those of the great Middletown and Princeton teams of past years. The Middie boys dominated the GMC from 2000-2007, winning 9 straight conference events. From 1982-1997 the Princeton boy's team won an amazing 14 out of 15 championships. The Mason boy's streak of 4 straight titles, has a ways to go to equal the Middie and Viking teams, but with the depth of Comet talent the future looks very bright. The boys scored a total of 151 points, besting second place Middletown who tallied 110 total points. The team scored in nearly every event and had 5 individuals or relays win their respective events; Leslie Pil in the pole vault, Zach Wills in the 3200, the 4x100 and 4x200 relays along with Ted Liu in the 200 dash! The 4x800 was comprised of Zach Wills, Tate Honaker, Matt Kincaid and Michael Mumma and the 4x100 relay was a team of Connor Noe, Josh Dooley, Brody Ruby and Billy Chanatry. The team also had some great seconds and thirds, along with a number of other valiant efforts. Mason was led by a key core of sprinters and distance runners who amassed most of the team points. The hurdle crew had a good showing as did some young throwers and jumpers. The key to the Mason title was consistency and a full team effort. Of note, Mason's 40-point margin of victory was accomplished without doubling any of the distance runners in their key events. For the fourth consecutive year, head coach Chip Dobson was named the GMC Coach of the Year. It was a great night capped off by a ceremony to honor those on the record board, past and present. Now it is on to districts, May 18th and 20th (Atrium Stadium), where the Comets will face a much tougher set of opponents in St. Xavier and Withrow. For a full recap of the this years boy's meet click here. |
5/18-5/20 | District Championships @ Mason |

Leslie Pil was the winner in the pole vault, and Matt Kincaid in the 3200. We had several qualifiers to the Regional meet, including the members of the 4x200, the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Also, Alex Notton, Tate Honaker, Zach Wills, Micahel Mumma and Brian Kolish in their individual events. It was a good night, and many athletes ran quite well, including several personal bests. The Regional Track meet will be held May 25th and May 27th at Dayton's Welcome Stadium. |
5/25-5/27 | Regionals @ Dayton Welcome Stadium |
8th place | The Mason boy's track team competed well at at the Regional Championships in Dayton last Friday. As a team we placed in the top 10 overall, and the future looks very bright for this young and talented group. The 4x800 meter relay placed 3rd overall, and was able to qualify to the state meet. Kincaid, Honaker, Mumma and Notton got the job done in a very tough field. Matt Kincaid anchored the team to success, and was able to hold off a charging field to qualify the team to state. The 4x200 meter relay team of Billy Chanantry, Adam Court, Ted Liu and Brody Ruby also qualified to state. This young crew of sophomores and juniors were able to place 3rd as well in our very tough region. Matt Kincaid was the big winner of the night, winning his 3200 race in commanding fashion, pulling away from the pack with one lap to go, and running one of the fastest times in the state. The 800 and 1600 were a very tough, with Honaker, Notton and Mumma missing qualifying, but still running very fast times in loaded races. The top four finishers in each event qualify for next weekend's state meet at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. |
6/3-6/4 | State Championships | 16th place | Relay teams are a point of pride for the Mason High School track teams and with good reason. The Comets put four relay teams on the podium at the Ohio Division I Track and Field Championships this weekend, and one of them stood at the top, draped in gold medals. Mason’s boys 800 relay came in fourth as Billy Chanatry, Brody Ruby, Adam Court an Ted Liu finished in 1:28.30. “We didn’t even expect to get out of the regionals, so getting fourth in the state is great,” Liu said. “We’ll all be back next year, so hopefully we can do even better things.” Matt Kincaid won the silver medal for Mason in the boys 3,200 meter run, showing a powerful kick over the last 300 meters to finish in 9:22.33. “I knew if I could stay with the pack for the first six laps I would be able to out-kick most of them at the end,” Kincaid said. “That’s the kind of race I run and I was able to do that today. I’m pretty happy." |

5/25-5/27 | Regionals | 1st place | Girls Track Captures Regional Title Mason High School’s girls track and field team is back on top. The Comets captured the Division I regional championship at Welcome Stadium, Friday night, their first regional title since 2008. Mason edged Withrow, 86-83.5 and they did it with a total team effort. The Comets dominated the four relays, scoring 35 of a possible 40 points and winning three of them — the 400, 800 and 3,200 meter relays while placing fourth in the 1,600. Mason won six regional titles overall. In addition to the three relay wins, Khara Walker won the 200 in 25.00 seconds. In the field events, Olivia Bergesen won the pole vault at 11 feet, six inches while Sarah Hunter won the long jump at 18-5. Hunter also ran the anchor leg in the 400 relay (with Brittany Betts, Naz Brandon and Kera Lamotte) that won in 48.06. Hunter, Lamotte, Brandon and Walker won the 800 relay in 1:39.69, while Bridget McElhenny, Olivia Gaus, Monica Lake and Brenna Hallum won the 3,200 relay in 9:17.55. Hallum also qualified for next weekend’s D-I state championships in the 1,600, placing third in 4:58.91. Also qualifying for the Mason girls were Taylor Reid in the 100 hurdles (fourth, 14.99) and the 1,600 relay team of Walker, Gaus, Ivy Beddow and Chelsea Vanhook. The top four finishers in each event qualify for next weekend's state meet at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. |
6/3-6/4 | State Championships | 6th place | Relay teams are a point of pride for the Mason High School track teams and with good reason. The Comets put four relay teams on the podium at the Ohio Division I Track and Field Championships this weekend, and one of them stood at the top, draped in gold medals. Mason High School wasted no time in claiming a state title on Friday at Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The girls 3,200-meter relay team of Brenna Hallum, Olivia Gaus, Bridget McElhenny and Monica Lake narrowly edged McAuley with a time of 9 minutes, 13.09 seconds to earn the top spot on the podium. McAuley was runner-up in 9:13.12, followed by Lebanon (9:15.24) in third. On Saturday, the Comets put three teams on the podium, the girls 400 and 800 teams and the boys 800 relay. Mason’s girls 800 relay of Naz Brandon, Kera Lamotte, Sarah Hunter and Khara Walker won the silver medal, placing second in 1:39.42. Brandon, Lamotte, Hunter and Brittany Betts took fourth in the 400 relay in 48.06. “We were hoping to break our record in the 400 but we tied it, so I’m satisfied,” Hunter, who also placed fifth in the long jump (17 feet, 10 and 1/2 inches) said. “We gave it all we had and you can’t ask for a better way to go out.” Mason’s boys 800 relay also came in fourth as Billy Chanatry, Brody Ruby, Adam Court an Ted Liu finished in 1:28.30. I’m pretty happy, You can’t complain about second best.” Olivia Bergesen, the defending state champion in the pole vault, failed to clear the bar at 11 feet and wound up in 10th place. Also just missing the podium for Mason was Khara Walker in the 200 (ninth, 25.40), Monica Lake in the 1,600 (10th, 5:03.42) and the boys 3,200 relay and girls 1,600 relay which both placed 11th. 3/25 | @ Loyola Academy (IL) vs. Harpeth Hall (TN) |
tie | 4-4 |
|
||||||||||||||||||
3/26 | vs. Loyola Academy (IL) |
lost | 12-4 | In game two of the Chicago trip, Mason took on host team Loyola Academy, last seasons Illinois State Champion and a co-favorite to repeat. The Comets came in knowing they would have to play at their best to compete with Loyola. Playing on only an hours rest from game one of the day, they couldn't find the energy to compete with the Ramblers from Loyola losing by a score of 12-4. Four Mason players scored 1 goal each; Senior Co-Captain Kristi Dezenzo, Senior Midfielder Falon Manns and a pair of Freshmen Midfielders Tori Blakeman and Allie Specht. Sophomore Attacker Kylie Yancey added an assist and Tristyn Kuehn had 8 saves in goal. |
||||||||||||||||||
3/27 | vs. New Trier (IL) | tie | 10-4 | In the final game of the day Mason saved its best for last, but came up short losing to New Trier (IL) by a score of 10-4. In a game where the score doesn't tell the whole story, Mason was close most of the way but had to take some chances in the closing minutes to try and close the gap. Those chances resulted in a final few easy goals for New Trier who is the other co-favorite along with Loyola to win the Illinois State Championship this year. Four Mason players had 1 goal each, Senior Attacker Sam Dunn, Senior Midfielder Falon Manns, Junior Midfielder Courtney Curtis, and Sophomore Attacker Kylie Yancey. Tristyn Kuehn stood tall on defense with 11 saves backing senior Defenders Jen Curry and Amari Agee. The defense as a whole played well to hold the Trevians down while giving the midfield and offense a chance to steal the game away from New Trier. Although the Comets did not earn a win this past weekend, the trip was a success because the team improved from game to game and has already played what US Lacrosse magazine predicts are top two teams in the whole Midwest Region. If the performance in game three is any indication of future success, this team is right on track with their plan to be the best team in the Southwestern Ohio Region by the end of the season. Next up the Comets will visit Summit Country Day on Saturday, April 2nd. |
||||||||||||||||||
4/2 | @ Summit Country Day | won | 15-7 | 1-1-2 | On Saturday, April 2nd, the Mason Girls Lacrosse team traveled to Summit Country Day and soundly defeated them 15-7 at Williams Field in downtown Cincinnati. The Lady Comets started out the game on fire and never let up with 10 players figuring in the final scoring statistics. Senior attacker, Sam Dunn, and Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis led all scorers. Sam had 1 goal and 4 assists, while Courtney had 3 goals and 2 assists. The leading goal scorer was Kylie Yancey who had 4 goals. Others who factored into the scoring were Seniors Falon Manns (2 goals), and Kristy Dezenzo (1 goal, 1 assist) and Juniors Lauren DeLuca (1 goal), Molly O'Connor (1 goal), Jamie Sobotka (1 goal), and freshman Brianna Manns added an assist to round out the scoring. Although scoring was plentiful and well distributed, the story of the game was at the draw circle as Seniors Amari Agee and Falon Manns and sophomore Kylie Yancey led the way securing draw after draw to keep the ball out of the hands of the talented Summit offense and in the hands of the equally talented Mason offense. The defense was stellar led by seniors Amari Agee, Jen Curry, and Tori Muilenburg and backed by Junior goalie Trista Kuehn who had another solid day in goal. Next up for Mason is Anderson High School who will be at Mason for the Lady Comets first home game of the season on April 8th. |
|||||||||||||||||
4/8 | Anderson | won | 12-2 | 2-1-2 | The Mason girls lacrosse team had their first home game on Thursday, April 7th against the Lady Orange of Anderson and posted win number 2 on the season with a 12-2 win. Sophomore Kylie Yancey, led all scorers with 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist), followed closely by Senior Attacker Samantha Dunn who had 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists). Three other players had two points each, Senior Co-Captain Kristi Dezenzo, Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis, and Junior Attacker, Taylor Klos Senior. Co-Captain Jen Curry and Freshman midfielder, Casey Lawson led the team in ground ball recovery with 4 each. Junior Goalie, Trista Kuehn, had 6 saves in goal. |
|||||||||||||||||
4/9 | @ New Albany | lost | 9-7 | 2-2-2 | The Mason girls lacrosse team came up short on their first trip to Columbus, losing 9-7 to last years State Semi-Finalist, the Lady Eagles of New Albany. The game was close throughout due to the outstanding goaltending of Trista Kuehn who had 9 saves on the day along with a team high 6 ground ball recoveries. Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis, and Sophomore Attacker, Kylie Yancey, led all scorers with 2 points each. Next up Mason will host Loveland on Thursday, April 14th. |
|||||||||||||||||
4/14 | Loveland | won | 21-5 | 3-2-2 | The Mason womens lacrosse team defeated Loveland 21-5 Thursday night for their third win of the season. Three players led in scoring with three points each, Senior attacker Samantha Dunn (3 goals), Sophomore attacker, Kylie Yancey (2 goals, 1 assist), and Freshman Tori Blakeman (3 goals). 10 other players figured into the scoring as well with 4 of those players getting 2 points, Senior midfielder, Kristy Dezenzo, Junior midfielder, Molly O'Connor, Junior attacker, Taylor Klos, and Freshman midfielder, Casey Lawson. Trista Kuehn recorded her 3rd win in goal. The Mason women face one of Kentucky's top teams tonight in Kentucky Country Day at home at 6:30, and Saturday they travel to Columbus to play the current #1 & #2 teams in Ohio in Upper Arlington and Cleveland Heights.
|
|||||||||||||||||
4/15 | Kentucky Country Day | tie | 11-11 | After a full weekend of competition against the best girls lacrosse teams in Kentucky and Ohio one thing is for sure, the Mason girls lacrosse team is the best 3-5-2 team in the state of Ohio. Friday's game with Kentucky Country Day (KCD) from Louisville was back and forth all game with numerous lead changes throughout but the best the Lady Comets could come up with was an 11-11 tie. Sophomore Attacker, Kylie Yancey, led all scorers with 4 points (3 goals, 1 assist), Junior Midfielder, Courtney Curtis, was second with 3 points (3 goals), and Attackers Sam Dunn and Brianna Manns were third with 2 points each. Senior Midfielder, Payton Laws, and Freshman Midfielder, Casey Lawson led the team in ground balls with 3 each, and Seniors Amari Agee, and Falon Manns led in draw controls with 3 each. Trista Kuehn had 9 saves in goal. |
||||||||||||||||||
4/16 | @ Hannigan Tournament
|
4-4-2 | On Saturday the Lady Comets traveled to Columbus to play in the annual Hannigan-Galipault tournament at Thomas Worthington high school and started off the day with a 5-6 loss to the #1 ranked Golden Bears of Upper Arlington. The game was tight throughout and all tied up going into the final minutes by a free position goal from Freshman Midfielder, Allie Specht. , The Lady Comets could not hold on and yielded a 6th goal to the Golden Bears in the final 2 minutes. Freshman, Allie Specht, and Junior, Courtney Curtis led all scorers with 2 points each, and Attackers Sam Dunn and Kylie Yancey added a goal each to round out the scoring. . Trista Kuehn had 6 saves in goal. In the last game of the weekend, Mason fell to the #2 team in the state, Cleveland Heights, 8-4. The game was much closer than the score would indicate. Leading at the half, Mason could not hold on and find the back of the net in the second half. Cleveland Heights controlled the ball and the clock to secure the win. Senior Midfielder, Kristy Dezenzo, led all scorers with 2 points (2 goals), and Juniors, Lauren Deluca and Taylor Klos rounded out the scoring with a goal each. Amari Agee led ground ball recovery with 3, and Trista Kuehn had 3 saves in goal. (Due to an ineligible player participating for Cleveland Heights during a contest on April 16, 2011, the OSLA has ruled the result of this contest is a forfeit in favor of Mason High School with a final score of Mason 1, Cleveland Heights 0.) Moral victories don't count for much on the record, but playing the top teams in the state, this close, means that the Mason women are very close to attaining the level of play that will make them successful in the tournament. As everyone knows, anything can happen come tournament time! Indian Hill will visit the Comets next Thursday April 21st. |
|||||||||||||||||||
4/21 | Indian Hill | won | 14-4 | 4-5-2 | The Mason Girls Lacrosse program began play in the spring of 2003 and since that time have maintained just under a 70% win percentage. Thursday night, April 21st the program notched its 100th win as a program, defeating Indian Hill 14-4. Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis, led all scorers with 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist). Sophomore attacker, Senior co-captain, Kristy Dezenzo and Sophomore attacker, Kylie Yancey were second with 3 points each. The big statistic of the game was at the draw circle. Of the 20 draws taken on the night, Mason owned 16 of them with Senior defender, Amari Agee leading the way with 5. Also of note, senior defenders Amari Agee and Jen Curry achieved something never before witnessed in a Mason girls lacrosse game; two defenders scoring goals in the same game. Trista Kuehn also had a big night in goal with 8 saves and a 67% save percentage. The Lady Comets travel to Lakota West next Tuesday, April 26th to meet the 7-1 Firebirds. |
|||||||||||||||||
4/26 | @ Lakota West | lost | 12-11 | 4-6-2 | Mason traveled to Lakota West High School on Tuesday April 26th and although up late in the game, could not hold on for the win falling to Lakota West 12-11. Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis led all scorers with 4 points on 4 goals, and sophomore attack, Kylie Yancey, and freshman midfielder, Allie Specht were tied for second with 3 points each. The Lady Comets play at home against Sycamore on Thursday, April 28th. |
|||||||||||||||||
4/28 | Sycamore | won | 12-11 (OT) | 5-6-2 | Alumni from as far back as 2004 and as recent as 2010 came to watch Mason defeat Sycamore on Thursday, April 28th. Masont fans were not disappointed as the Lady Comets beat Sycamore 12-11 on an overtime goal by Junior midfielder, Courtney Curtis, to record Mason's first win over Sycamore in the history of both programs. In fact, it is the first time another Cincinnati area team has beaten Sycamore in the history of their program. The Lady Comets battled from an early 5-2 deficit and would not be denied battling back to a 6-5 halftime lead; however, by the middle of the second half Sycamore was up again 10-8 and looking to ice the game but Mason would have none of it as they battled back again to tie it 11-11 and take the game to over time. Freshman, Allie Specht, would eventually lead all scorers with 4 points on 4 goals, Junior, Courtney Curtis, was heavily guarded all night, but still ended up scoring 3 points on 3 goals, and Senior co-captain, Kristy Dezenzo was 3rd with 2 points on a goal and an assist. Once again, draw control was a strength for the Lady Comets as Senior, Amari Agee, and Sophomore, Kylie Yancey, netted 3 each and Seniors, Falon Manns and Kristy Dezenzo, along with Allie Specht secured 2 each. All in all a major achievement and milestone for the program was achieved and all looks well headed into the last quarter of the season and into tournament in May. Next Mason will host Ursuline on Tuesday, May 3rd. |
|||||||||||||||||
5/3 | Ursuline | won | 13-7 | 7-5-2 | The Mason girls lacrosse team continued its winning ways with a decisive win over a solid Ursuline Academy team on Tuesday, May 3rd by a score of 13-7. 5/23 & 5/25 | TOURNAMENT vs. Lakota West @ home 7:30 |
won | 13-7 | 11-5-2 | It took two days to get the game in due to weather delays, but the result of the second half was almost a mirror image of the first half as the Lady Comets rolled to a 13-7 victory over the Firebirds of Lakota West, and secured their status as the best Division I team in Cincinnati for the first time since the start of the program in 2003. Junior standout midfielder, Courtney Curtis, led the way in scoring with a season high 8 points on 5 goals and 3 assists. Courtney was also given a special defensive assignment to fulfill that was key to the victory as well. Second in scoring was Sophomore attacker, Kylie Yancey, with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist), and a pair of seniors, Sam Dunn and Falon Manns, were third with 2 points each. A 5 defender approach (instead of 4) was used to provide a solid defense staffed primarily by seniors Jen Curry, Amari Agee, Payton Laws, Tori Muilenburg, and Sophomore, Kaitlyn McGowan. The defense turned back and out the Lakota West attacks continuously throughout the game and especially in the second half to keep the ball in the Comet offensive end of the field. Trista Kuehn was solid in goal and gets the win. The Lady Comets now set their sites on becoming the top team in the Region and head to a neutral field at Indian Hill High School to face New Albany in the Regional Final at 7PM on Thursday May 26th. |
