The Mason Comets football season came to a disappointing conclusion last Friday night with a loss in the first round of the OHSAA playoffs to Lakota East. The postseason home game was a close one that could have gone either way. East’s offense controlled the clock giving the Comets fewer scoring opportunities. Final score 20-17.
The two teams matched first-quarter touchdowns. Mason’s Logan Dalton scored first on a 3-yard run, while East countered with a 1-yard TD. The second period was all about time of possession as the two squads had the ball once each. Charles Sipe kicked a 21-yard field goal for the Comets, and that made it 10-7 at halftime. Sipe finishes a special season going perfect in PAT’s (21-21) and 13-14 on field goals.
East was intercepted in the end zone by Jaydon Kaufhold to finish the first half and stop an East scoring opportunity.
The Thunderhawks went up 17-10 with 10 third-quarter points. But the Comets did not go quietly. In the fourth period, QB Collin Brown led a scoring drive that knotted the game at 17-17. Brown had a big fourth-down conversion deep in East territory, and that was followed by a 7-yard touchdown scamper by Nolan McCormick (13 carries 87 yards).
The Thunderhawks fought back again with a’ 20-yard field goal with 4:02 remaining turned out to be the difference in the game. The Comets had the ball in the last few minutes to either tie or go ahead, but could not put together an offensive drive that ended on downs.
Mason finishes a very good season! The Comets were 8-3 overall and 7-1 in the GMC, good for 2nd place behind Colerain.
Congrats and thanks to all the coaches and players!
