6:15 @ Wright State

lost 48-35 17-7 9-5

The Mason Lady Comets return to he Regional Semi-Finals on Tuesday, March 8th at Wright State University. Their opponent was Kettering Fairmont the No. 1 seed coming out of Dayton, while Mason was a No. 6 seed. Unfortunately, the young and talented Firebirds would get the best of the Comets winning by a final score of 48-35.

The Firebirds entered the contest at 23-1 with their lone loss occuring at Butler. The Comets were making their seventh appearance in the Regional tourney since 1990 with their last visit coming in the 2008-09 season.

Mason was attempting to be the first Comet girls basketball team since the 1999-2000 State Champions to play in a Regional Final.

The game did not start well for Mason as Fairmont went up 11-0 in the first 4 minutes. By the end of the 1st quarter the Comets had made up some ground and trailed 15-9. With Sarah Hunter on the bench most of the 2nd quarter with foul trouble the Comets fell behind by as much as 15 points. Fairborn led at the half 29-14.

The Comets found themselves down by 20 in the third quarter with foul trouble and shooting woes. The quarter ended with Mason down 36-23. The Comets showed some life and got as close as 8 in the final period. But the Fairmont lead was too deep and the Lady Comets season came to an end.

Brianna Glover led the Comets with 11 points. Mason concludes their 2010-11 season as District Champs at 17-7.

Also making a huge contribution to the team was senior, Olivia Bergesen who scored for the Comets on every event, including placing top 7 on each event (2nd on bars and all around). 1/8 CCD Indian Cup 2nd Place

COMETS PLACE 2ND AT INDIAN CUP

The Mason Gymnastics team came in 2nd place at the Indian Cup Invitational by the narrowest margin possible in gymnastics! The Centerville Elks scored a 134.00 beating Mason with a 133.975 by .025! The Comets performed well on floor and especially bars, but were unsteady on the balance beam where they had to count 2 falls towards their team score. The coaches and team were disappointed with the loss, but were also motivated to perform more to their potential in the future. “We were a bit off today and made several mistakes. The girls need to step it up and be more focused so they can execute more solid routines”, said coaches Kelly Wones and Denise DeLotell.

There were many highlights to the day, including bar routines with increased difficulty by senior Lauren Brune and freshman Brooke Middleton. The Comets vaulted well, though hope to increase their difficulty level on that event as the season progresses. Contributing greatly to the team score for the Comets were Middleton (all 4 events), senior Olivia Bergesen & junior Jenna Bovenzi (3 events), as well as Brune and juniors, Lauren Robertson and Anna Taylor (2 events).

The Lady Comets are in action next Saturday, January 15th at their home meet, The Comet Cup Invitational which will be held at the brand new Mason Community Center gymnasium. Teams competing against Mason in the event are: Badin, Beavercreek, Centerville, CCD, Fairfield, Miamisburg, Northmont, Troy, and Turpin. Competition begins at 11:00am.

1/15 Mason Comet Cup 1st place Brooke Middleton-Mason The Mason Gymnastics team retained their Comet Cup champion title for the 3rd year running this weekend at the Mason Community Center’s new gymnasium. Mason entered 2 teams into the competition; “Mason Green” was the winning team and its 2nd team, Mason Black, placed 5th.

Winning the meet in the all around for the Comets was Mason freshman, Brooke Middleton. “Brooke had a great meet today,” stated coaches Kelly Wones and Denise DeLotell. “She hit 4 for 4 and is becoming more and more consistent at every meet.” Brooke placed on all 4 events for the Comets and scored a 35.00. That gives her the 5th highest all around record in Mason Gymnastics history. Brooke also placed 2nd on vault, 8th on bars, 2nd on beam and 8th on floor.

Also having an excellent meet and scoring for Mason Green were: senior Olivia Bergesen (scoring on all four events) winning 10th place on bars, 4th place on floor, and 6th place in the all around;
sophomore Anna Taylor (scoring on 3 events), placing 3rd on beam and 7th in the all around; and senior Lauren Brune and junior Jenna Bovenzi, who each scored twice for the team. Brune placed 9th on beam, her first time ever competing the event, and Bovenzi placed 6th on bars, 10th on floor, and 8th in the all around.

Placing for Mason Black were juniors Lauren Robertson (9th vault, 4th beam) and Rachel Hawthorne (6th beam).

It was Senior recognition day for the Comets, who honored their four seniors, Alex Perez, Libby Evans, Lauren Brune, and Olivia Bergesen.

Mason’s next competition is Sunday, January 23rd at the Centerville Elk Invitational, where they once again will enter 2 teams. The Comets will compete against Alter, Badin, Beavercreek, Centerville, Fairfield, Hamilton, Miamisburg, Northmont, Seven Hills, and Troy.
1/23 Centerville Elk Invite 1st place

Bovenzi, a strong and consistent bar worker has scored for the team on bars at every meet, as has Robertson on her specialty, the balance beam and Taylor on the floor exercise.

“Mason’s success so far this season is attributed to the depth of its team”, said coaches Kelly Wones and Denise DeLotell. “These girls work all together to contribute to the team score. It’s not just 1 or 2 girls that stand out way above the rest.”

1/26 Seven Hills Quad
1/29 Lakota East Invite     Masons’ gymnasts defended their Lakota East Invitational title this past Saturday against 16 other teams to improve their record to 4-1. Robertson also turned in her highest score ever on floor, as well as performing a consistent and rock solid beam routine.

Bovenzi, a strong and consistent competitor for the Lady Comets, earned her best vault score ever. Bergesen, for the 4th meet in a row, was the team leader on floor. Middleton took 1st place in the vault competition with the 2nd highest vault score in Mason Gymnastics history (9.2) and was the only all arounder in the top 10 for the Comets (9th).

Mason is in action at 2 quad meets before their next invitational, the Cincinnati city championships in Fairfield on Feb. 19th. Mason will be at the Centerville Quad on Feb. 10th.
2/10 Centerville Quad 1st place   The Mason High School Gymnastics team competed in a 6 team meet Thursday, February 10th at Centerville High School. The Comets took 1st place by a very narrow margin over 2nd place Centerville and 3rd place Northmont. Only two tenths of a point separated 3rd place from 1st.

Junior Jenna Bovenzi was the highest placing all arounder (3rd) for the team and added to the final team score on all four events. Senior Olivia Bergesen scored on three events for the Comets, while the rest of the team score was comprised of performances from senior Olivia Bergesen (3 events) and Alex Perez (2 events), junior Lauren Robertson (2 events), sophomore Maggie Fewell (2 events), and freshmen Brooke Middleton (2 events) and Alisha Patil (1 event).

Up next for the Lady Comets are the Cincinnati City Championships, Saturday, February 19th at Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy. Mason will be defending its title as reigning city champions for two years running.

2/26 District Championships @ Lakota East

1st-Mason

2nd Centerville

Mason Gymnastics made history this week by being the 1st gymnastics team in school history to win the southwest Ohio district and become DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!

Mason scored its 2nd highest team score in history (2nd only to last week’s record breaking score) to beat out 15 other teams in the Dayton and Cincinnati area and qualify to the state meet next weekend at Hilliard Bradley. The Comets won by a large margin of over 1 point to 2nd place Centerville.

Freshman Brooke Middleton is District Champ on the vault where she scored a 9.15 to qualify to state in that event!

Also qualifying to state are: Senior Olivia Bergesen (vault), Junior Lauren Robertson (beam), and Sophomore Anna Taylor (beam). Alternates to the state competition include junior Jenna Bovenzi (all-around) and Anna Taylor (floor). Bovenzi had a personal best in the all-around and narrowly missed qualifying to state by placing in a tie for 6th place, but losing out on the tie breaker.

Mason’s team score (137.525) was comprised of scores from all 7 of its starters showing the great depth of the team and the importance of each team member. The starting line-up for the Lady Comets included seniors Bergesen and Alex Perez, juniors Bovenzi and Robertson, sophomores Taylor and Maggie Fewell and freshman Middleton.

The Comets finish its regular season 7-1.

The state team competition will be held Friday, March 4th and the individual competition will be Saturday, March 5th.

State Championships

@ Hilliard Darby

12th place

The Lady Comets finished their record-breaking gymnastics season on a difficult note at state this weekend as they tried to overcome the loss of freshman stand out Brooke Middleton to an elbow injury before the competition and sophomore starter Maggie Fewell to a knee injury on the first event of the competition.

Mason finished with their lowest score of the season by over a point to finish in 12th place at state. While the Comets were disappointed with the finish, the team had an incredible season and their coaches, Kelly Wones and Denise DeLotell are very proud of their success as district champs, qualifying them to state for the 2nd season in a row.

Of special note was junior Jenna Bovenzi who came back from a difficult meet on her 1st 3 events to finish the meet with a rock solid beam routine that scored the highest for the Comets with an 8.8. Bovenzi had struggled the last few weeks with consistency on a brand new acro series, which she nailed in the routine.

Other high scores on each event for the Comets were Olivia Bergesen (senior) on vault with an 8.95, Alex Perez (senior) on bars with an 8.125 and sophomore Anna Taylor on floor with an 8.6.

In the individual competition, state qualifiers Olivia Bergesen finished 31st on vault with an 8.8, Lauren Robertson (junior) 31st on beam with an 8.05, and Anna Taylor, 16th on beam with an 8.725.

Taylor placed highest in our district on the beam and was one of only 3 area gymnasts to stick her routine. She also was the 3rd highest placer overall in our district on any event.

The Comets graduate 4 seniors in Olivia Bergesen, Lauren Brune, Libby Evans, and Alex Perez, whose leadership and contributions to the team will be greatly missed. Congratulations to all the gymnasts and coaches on an outstanding season!
