Cepeda and Tsai Capture Mason's First State Tennis Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Mason doubles team of Miguel Cepeda and Luke Tsai avenged their state runner-up finish from a year ago, winning the Ohio Division I State Doubles Championship on Saturday at Ohio State University's Varsity Outdoor Tennis Courts.  It was an all GMC matchup as the young Mason tennis standouts defeated a familiar opponent in the finals. Sycamore's Yuri Karev and Nakul Narendran fell to their league rivals by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to claim the championship.

Cepeda and Tsai needed three sets to beat New Albany’s Oliver Sybert and Alex Kobelt 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) during Friday’s second round. Then in their state semifinal, Cepeda and Tsai defeated the Sycamore doubles team of juniors Dylan Stern and Nikhil Grandhi 6-3, 6-4 to reach the championship match.

The Sycamore duo of Karev and Narendran faced Bellbrook's Jackson Heinz and Wyatt Heinz in their semi-final match, defeating them with a straight sets win, 7-6, 6-3, to advance to the title match against Cepeda and Tsai.

"As last year's state runnerup, Miguel and Luke set their goal early that they wanted to be the state doubles champions this season," said Mason Head Coach Linda Kirtlley "The ongoing preparation allowed them to be strong both with their racquets and their mental game. The new OSU tennis facility is outstanding and it was an honor to win their championship there."

The win by Cepeda and Tsai gave the Comet Tennis program its first-ever state tennis title.  The Mason pair will have an opportunity to repeat next year as Miguel Cepeda is a junior and Luke Tsai only a sophomore.

Congratulations Miguel and Luke!
