4x800 relay state champs
The Mason girls track and field team had an outstanding team showing at the the State Championship June 2nd and 3rd at Jesse Owens Stadium at Ohio State. After finishing 2nd at the Regional Championships the girls sent a host of qualifiers to the OHSAA State Meet.
At State the 4x800 relay kicked off the meet by not only winning the race, but setting an all-time, all-divisions state and stadium record.  The relay was made up of Lily Hallum, Maddie Ullom, Faith Min and Ellie Brush, all of whom ran their season best times to combine for a time of 8:56.62 to beat the previous state record by 4 seconds and the previous school record by 13 seconds.  The entire team and their fans joined the ladies as they celebrated atop the podium.
The record setting continued on Saturday as Amaya King bested her own school record in the shot put with her final throw of 46’7”.  Amaya improved her state performance from last year finishing state runner-up in the event.
Nicole Bagby also finished her career with a personal best and new school record in the pole vault.  She vaulted 13” to finish 3rd in her event.
Lily Hallum returned to set another record in the 800 meter run.  She ran a personal best of 2:13.84, to finish 7th and round out her great season.
Maddie Ullom also finished 7th in the 400 meter dash in an outstanding time of 56.59 seconds, the only freshman in the race.
We had several other state participants who had fantastic seasons, and great final performances.
4x100 meter relay - Grace Tang, Mariah Green, Regan Morton, Jordan Dawson
4x200 meter relay - Jordan Dawson, Mariah Green, Kaylie Connors and Reagan Snyder
4x400 meter relay - Ellie Brush, Kaylie Connors, Reagan Snyder, Maddie Ullom
Discus - Amaya King
Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches for another fantastic Comet girls track season!

The Mason Boys Track team had a GREAT showing at Regionals on May 24th and 25th winning a Regional Title; the programs 3rd in the last 5 years.
The Comet boys placed several on the podium in the top eight overall.  Carter Witmer-Gautsch was 8th as was Bryan Hudnell.  Davis Robey was 6th and Mikey Loehr just missed qualifying to state in 5th as did the members of the 4x100 relay.
Mason did have several qualifiers to State!. The 4x400 and the 4x800 teams made it!  The 4x400 of Miller, Porter, Ashraf and Mitchell won as did the 4x8 team of Miller, Nijakowski, Loehr and Troy in their race.  Vince Jackson was also able to make it out in the high jump (3rdplace) as did Abel Nijakowki in the 3200.
Lastly Hayden Cobb was 3rd overall in the 400 meter dash, and he also qualified to the state meet.  At the end of the night the boys racked up enough points to win the team title and receive the team trophy.
The state meet went about as well as could have hoped for the Mason Boys Track team.  Except for a few glitches, overall it was a great success!  The Comets placed 2nd in the 4x200 relay and 2nd in the 4x400 relay.  Both of those relays were long shots to get to the finals, so placing 2nd was pure joy.  Some tough decisions had to be made at State, but the boys took it well and it all worked out great.  It was a total team effort on these events.
Vince Jackson took 3rd overall in the high jump and had a great day, jumping “clean” the whole way through.  The 3200 did not go as well as Abel would have liked, sadly he had a side stitch and struggled a bit. Similarly, Hayden Cobb would have liked a redo on the 400, but he got great experience.
The boy’s 4x800 was silly fast this year, and Mason's time was our best of the year, but only good for 10th on this very fast day.  Each man had a great split and ran with great heart.
Overall, the team ran great, had a great time and came in 7th overall as a team.  It was very exciting experience and tremendous season of Mason Boys Track in 2017!
