STATE BOUND!
BASEBALL WINS REGIONAL TITLE!

The Comets finally achieved a goal that has alluded the program since Mason's move to Division 1, winning the Division 1 Southwest Regional Championship!  Mason defeated Moeller last Friday 3-2 at the University of Cincinnati's Marge Schott Stadium and punched their ticket to the STATE FINAL FOUR! The last time the Comets advanced to state was in 1987 under legendary coach Ken Gray.

Mason and Moeller were the area's best coming into the game. Mason led the city poll. Coming into the tournament, the Comets were fifth in the state and Moeller seventh.

Rollie Sheriff moved to 8-1 on the season with the win.  Sheriff pitched the first five innings, allowing just two earned runs on four hits while striking out four.  Nick Northcut pitched the final two scoreless innings in relief to earn a well-deserved save, his fourth of the season.  Northcut held the Crusaders hitless and struck out four.

Mason led early in this one, taking a 1-0 lead in the first.  Joe Powell, who had two hits on the day, and Nick Northcutboth singled to lead off the game.  A one-out RBI single from Evan Haas scored Powell.

In the Comets' two-run second, Harrison Johnson led off the inning with a towering home run to deep right field to make a 2-0 ballgame.  Ben Kraus followed with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Northcut.

Moeller clawed back into the game in the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits to cut Mason's lead to 3-2.  From there, the Crusaders put single runners on base in the fifth, sixth, and seventh.  But, the duo of Sheriff and Northcut along with a flawless Mason defense was enough to preserve the victory for the Comets.

This is Mason's first Regional Championship since 1987 when the Comets finished as the State Runner-Up in Division 2.  The Comets (26-5 overall) head to Huntington Park in downtown Columbus, OH for a state semi-final showdown with Whitehouse Anthony Wayne (25-4 overall) at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 1st.
