Prasco 11:00 am

won 7-5 1-0

The Comets opened the regular season on Saturday, March 25th, hosting Moeller and Strongsville in a three-way doubleheader at Legacy Field at Prasco Park.

In the season opener for both teams, Mason erupted for six runs in the second inning and withstood a late inning Moeller comeback to defeat the Crusaders by a final score of 7-5.

Will Pfennig (1-0) got the start and the win for Mason, pitching the first four innings. Pfennig allowed two earned runs, four hits, and two walks while striking out four. Will MacLean pitched the final three innings in relief, picking up the save. MacLean allowed three earned runs, six hits, and no walks while striking out one.

Mason sent eleven men to the plate in the second inning, scoring six runs on three hits while taking advantage of five walks in the inning. Michael Hall and Matt Deskins led off the inning with base hits. Following an RBI sacrifice fly from D.J. Fluker, Nick Northcut delivered the big blow - a bases loaded two-out laser off the left field wall to drive in two runs and put the Comets up 6-0. Moeller battled back, scoring twice in the fourth and two more times in the sixth to make it a 6-4 ballgame. In the Mason sixth following a one-out bloop double by J.P. Sponseller, Evan Haas delivered a huge two-out insurance run - ripping a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle to put the Comets up 7-4. In the seventh, Moeller's first three batters hit singles - producing a run to make it 7-5. But, Will MacLean retired the next three Crusaders in order, ending the game with a strike out to preserve the Comet victory. Mason leaders on offense:

Strongsville @

Prasco 4:00 PM

won 2-1 2-0

Game two of today's season-opening three way doubleheader at Prasco Park on Saturday turned out to be a pitchers dual. Behind a combined two-hitter from Nick Northcut and Rollie Sheriff, the Comets prevailed by a final score of 2-1. Northcut (1-0) got the start and the win for Mason, pitching five innings of two hit one run baseball, striking out three and walking just one while allowing one earned run. Rollie Sheriff, making his first appearance in a varsity uniform, tossed two shutout innings - allowing no hits and two walks while striking out one. He picked up his first save.

Mason trailed in this game 1-0 before scoring twice in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Nick Northcut ripped a one out double to left field and immediately scored on an RBI single from Michael Hall. After Hall advanced to second base on a hit and run ground ball to second, Jace Robinson produced what proved to be the winning run with a base hit up the middle to score Hall. The Comets were limited to just five hits in what was a well-pitched game by both teams. Leaders on offense for Mason:

Jace Robinson: 2 for 3, RBI
Michael Hall: single, RBI
Nick Northcut: double

3/27 Princeton won 6-0 3-0 1-0

The Comets kicked off GMC play on Monday, March 27th with a convincing 6-0 win over Princeton at home. Joey Bowlin (1-0) pitched a complete game one-hitter, striking out five and walking just two over his seven innings of work. Bowlin, who took a no-hitter in to the seventh, required only 85 pitches to dispatch with the Vikings today.

Mason scored three runs in the first and two more in the second to provide Bowlin all the breathing room he would need. The Comets defense was solid all afternoon as well. Following a one out sacrifice fly by Matt Deskins to drive in the first Mason run, Jace Robinson delivered a two out two run double to left center to stake Bowlin and the Comets to a first inning 3-0 lead. Leaders on offense for Mason:

Jace Robinson: 2 for 3, double, 2 RBI's
Michael Hall: 3 for 3 QAB's, 2 singles, BB
James Grace: 2 for 2 QAB's, bunt single, BB, 4 stolen bases
Joseph Powell: 2 for 3 QAB's, single, BB

Mason is scheduled to conclude its two game series with the Vikings at Princeton High School on Wednesday, March 29th at 5:00 PM.

3/29 @ Princeton won 20-4 4-0 2-0

What was a 5-4 ballgame after four innings turned in to a lopsided affair as Mason scored twelve times in the sixth inning en route to a 20-4 win over Princeton on Wednesday, March 29th on the Vikings' home field. Will MacLean (1-0) was today's starter and winner for Mason, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks with four strike outs over his four innings of work. Ben Kraus, making his first career varsity appearance, was impressive in relief - blanking the Vikings over the final two innings . He allowed just one hit while striking out five.

The Comets scored five times in the second to seemingly take command of the game before Princeton picked up a run in the second and three more in the fourth to make things interesting. But, Mason quickly responded with three runs in the fifth before breaking the game open in the sixth with a twelve run outburst. Leaders on offense for Mason:

Joe Powell: 3 for 4, double, 3 RBI's
Michael Hall: 3 for 5, triple, 3 RBI's
Nick Northcut: 2 for 4: double, 2 RBI's
J.P. Sponseller: 2 for 3, double, 3 RBI's
Kadeen Beerman: 2 for 4, double
Evan Haas: triple, walk, RBI

4/1 Colerain lost 4-0 4-1 2-1

After beginning the 2017 season with an impressive 4-0 start, the Comets suffered their first loss of the season at home on Saturday, April 1st, falling to the Colerain Cardinals by a final score of 4-0. The Mason offense could only muster one base hit on the day - a well-placed 4th inning sacrifice bunt by Matt Deskins that alluded the Colerain defense.

Colerain was able to piece together two runs in the sixth after a hit batter and and bunt single led off the inning. A few miscues by the Mason defense combined with no offense and a couple of timely hits for the Cardinals was all it took to seal the Comets' fate.

Nick Northcut (1-1) suffered the loss for Mason, pitching the first six innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits, hitting two, walking three, and striking out four. Joey Bowlin pitched the final frame for the Comets, allowing no runs, one hit, and one walk. Bowlin struck out one.

The Comets are scheduled to conclude the two-game series with the Cardinals on the road at Colerain on Monday, April 3rd at 5:00 PM.

4/3 @ Colerain lost 3-2 4-2 2-2

Mason visited Colerain on Monday. Trailing 3-0 after two innings of play, the Comets fought back to make it a tight contest the rest of the way. However, they could not come up with the timely hit or productive out when needed, leaving 12 men on base in dropping a 3-2 decision.

Will Pfennig (1-1) suffered the tough loss for Mason, pitching well over his five innings of work - which included a 45 minute rain delay in the bottom of the second inning. Pfennig allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out nine and walking four. Will MacLean pitched two shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits and no walks. The Comets committed three errors in the field, which cost them in this close ballgame.

Mason's offensive woes continued as they managed to generate only four base hits on the day - all singles in separate innings. Evan Haas produced the first Comets run in the fourth with a two-out RBI single. One inning later, Michael Hall hit a sacrifice fly to drive in D.J. Fluker, who had led off the inning with a single. Mason left the bases loaded in the third, fourth, and fifth innings today. Michael Hall led off the Mason seventh with a single but was left stranded at third to end the game.

The Comets, 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the GMC, travel to Lakota East on Wednesday, April 5th for a GMC match-up at 5:00 PM.

4/7 Lakota East won 4-3

Behind the solid pitching of Nick Northcut, Mason overcame a shaky defensive performance in holding on to defeat Lakota East at home by a final score of 4-3. Northcut (2-1) pitched six and 1/3 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out ten and walking one. Will MacLean came on in relief in with two on and one out in the seventh. He required just three pitches to notch his second save of the season as the only batter he faced slapped a ground ball to third. Nick Northcut, taking over at third base, stepped on third for the force out before firing the ball over to first to complete the game-ending double play.

The Mason offense generated 10 hits on the day, while the Comets defense made things very interesting the fourth inning - committing six errors in a single inning which allowed two unearned Lakota East runs to cross the plate. But, Northcut recorded the final two outs of the inning via strikeout to limit the damage. Leaders on offense for Mason:

Evan Haas: 3 for 3, RBI
Nick Northcut: 2 for 3, double
Jace Robinson: double, 2 RBI's

4/8 @ Lakota East (resume suspended game) won 3-2 6-2 4-2

The Comets visited Lakota East Saturday afternoon to finish their game which began on Wednesday, April 5th and came away with a 3-2 win. The game was suspended due to weather in the bottom of the third with the game tied 1-1. Joey Bowlin (2-0), who was Mason's starter in this game on Wednesday, returned to the mound today and picked up right where he left off. Bowlin pitched an absolute gem, going the distance to record his second win of the season. His pitching line on the day: seven innings, one earned run, five hits, ten strikeouts, and two walks.

The game remained tied 1-1 going in to the fifth inning in what was a very well-pitched game by both starting pitchers, who both threw complete games today. Kadeen Beermann led off the Mason fifth with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by J.P. Sponseller. One out later, Nick Northcut launched a towering home run to deep left center field to put the Comets up 3-1.

Lakota East picked up a run in their half of the sixth to make it a 3-2 game heading in to the seventh. The Thunderhawks' lead off batter in the seventh reached second after a dropped third strike and subsequent wild pitch. But, Bowlin responded by striking out the next batter to record the first out. Michael Hall made a nice play on a pop up near the Lakota East dugout to record out #2. The game ended as the next batter scorched a ground ball up the middle. Mason shortstop Joe Powell dove behind the bag at second to snag the ground ball, and sprung to his feet to fire a seed to first base.

With the win, Mason sweeps the season series with Lakota East to remain just one game out of first place in the GMC. The Comets return to action at home on Monday, April 10th in GMC play against Hamilton. Game time is 5:00 PM.

4/10 Hamilton won 17-0 7-2 5-2

After a week of lackluster output from the offense, the Comets wasted no time starting the new week off with a bang - scoring five runs in the first inning en route to a 17-0 pounding of Hamilton on Monday afternnon.

The Comets exploded for 14 total hits over their four innings at the plate, and led this game 14-0 after just two innings. Will Pfennig (2-1) was the starter and winner for Mason, tossing three shutout innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out four and walking a batter. Rollie Sheriff and Quinn Hecker each pitched one scoreless inning in relief, both striking out one and not allowing a Hamilton batter to reach base.

Each of the nine starters for Mason scored at least one run in what was a balanced and potent attack on offense today. Leaders on offense included:

D.J. Fluker: 2 for 3, 2 triples, 4 RBI's
Joe Powell: 2 for 2, HR, RBI
Michael Hall: 2 for 2, RBI
Nick Northcut: single, 3 RBI's
Evan Haas: 3 for 3, double, 2 RBI's
Kadeen Beermann: triple, RBI

NEXT: The BB Team will visit Hamilton on Wednesday, April 12th.

Record: 7-2, 5-2 Tied for 2nd in GMC

4/12 @ Hamilton won 6-5 8-2 6-2

The Comets found themselves in a dogfight over at Hamilton on Wednesday, April 12th, and managed to come from behind twice in this game to outlast the Big Blue 6-5 in ten innings. Ben Kraus (1-0) pitched four innings of one-hit shutout baseball to provide a huge lift to his team and record his first career varsity win. Kraus finished with four strikeouts and two walks on the day. Will MacLean started for Mason and certainly kept the Comets in the game, exiting after four innings with the score tied 4-4. He allowed three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Rollie Sheriff pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing an earned run on two hits while walking four.

The Mason offense banged out 13 hits on the day, all singles spread among nine different Comet hitters. Trailing 5-4 with two outs in the seventh, Matt Deskins came off the bench to deliver a pinch hit RBI single that would ultimately send the game to extra innings. With two out in the top of the 10th, Joe Powell drew a walk and stole second base. J.P. Sponseller followed with a ground ball single up the middle. Hamilton's second baseman dove to get a glove on the ball, but the ball dribbled far enough from his glove to allow a hustling Powell to scamper home with what proved to be the winning run. Other highlights on offense for Mason today:

Nick Northcut: 3 for 3, SAC fly, RBI
James Grace: 2 for 4, 3 stolen bases
Michael Hall: 2 for 6

4/13 @ Fairfield won 9-3 9-2 7-2

In a rematch of last year's match-up at Fairfield between two opposing teams and two opposing starting pitchers vying for a GMC championship, Mason handled the Indians on Thursday, April 13th by a final score of 9-3. Nick Northcut (3-1) started and won it for the Comets, pitching the first five innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. After two had scored for Fairfield and they had loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th, Northcut struck the next three batters out in order to end any serious threat the Indians would pose in this game. Will Pfennig came on in the sixth to record two hitless and scoreless innings for Mason. He walked a batter and struck out three.

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, the Comets scored twice in the second to take the lead before erupting for seven runs in the fifth to break the game open. Two-RBI singles by Evan Haas and James Grace were the big blows in the Mason fifth. Overall leaders on offense for Mason today:

4/17 Fairfield lost 5-1 10-3 7-3

Fairfield made their annual visit to Mason today in GMC action and avenged last Thursday's Mason win by defeating the Comets by a final score of 5-1. After what was a very tight and well-played ballgame through five innings with the score knotted at one apiece, Fairfield scored twice in the sixth and twice more in the seventh due, in large part, to the Mason defense committing six errors in the final two innings.

Joey Bowlin (2-1) took the tough loss on the mound for Mason today as he delivered another solid outing, allowing no earned runs, five hits, and four walks to go with one strikeout in his 5 1/3 innings of work. Will MacLean pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs and one hit with no walks while striking out three.

4/19 @ West lost 7-6 11-4 7-4

Mason and Lakota West battled back and forth in a key GMC matchup at West on Wednesday night, with the Firebirds outlasting the Comets in extra innings by a final score of 7-6. Will Pfennig started the game on the mound for Mason and, despite not having his best command, competed hard and kept the Comets in the game before exiting after four innings of work. Pfennig allowed an earned run on just one hit while walking five and striking out six. Will MacLean (1-1) came on in the fifth and finished the game for Mason.

Mason trailed 1-0 after one before scoring three runs in the third to hold a 3-1 lead heading in to the fifth. In that third inning, four consecutive base hits from Joe Powell (double), Evan Haas (single), Michael Hall (single), and Nick Northcut (double), produced the three runs. Lakota West responded with four runs of their own in their half of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. The Comets came right back in the top of the sixth, scoring three times to go up 6-5. West scored a run in their half of the sixth to tie things up at 6-6, and we remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth. In the Firebird eighth inning, a lead-off drag bunt for a hit and subsequent SAC bunt that was mishandled by the Mason infield put runners at second and third with nobody out. Following an intentional walk to load the bases, West executed yet another bunt - this time a safety squeeze to end the ballgame. Leaders on offense for Mason included:

Evan Haas: 3 for 4, RBI
Joe Powell: double, two walks
Nick Northcut, double, 2 RBI's
Kadeen Beermann: pinch hit double

The Comets are back in action against Lakota West again on Friday, April 21st - this time hosting the Firebirds at Prasco Park at 7:00 PM as part of the Cincinnati Reds Futures Showcase. Mason (11-4, 7-4) finds themseles only a couple games off the pace in the GMC title race.

Lakota West

@ Prasco Park

7:00

lost 5-0 11-5 7-5
Mason dropped a key GMC game 5-0 to Lakota West at Prasco Park on Friday night as part of the Cincinnati Reds Futures Series.  In a well-pitched game by both teams, The Comets' defense failed to execute in a couple of key moments, which led to Lakota West scoring four unearned runs in the game.  In addition, the Mason offense was held largely in check the entire night - generating just five base hits (all singles).

Nick Northcut (3-2) was the starter for Mason, and deserved a better fate.  He allowed just one earned run on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts in his five and 1/3 innings of work.  Joey Bowlin pitched the final inning and 2/3 for Mason, allowing no earned runs, two hits, and no walks while striking out one.

Mason (11-5 overall, 7-5 GMC)  is now three games behind co-leaders Lakota West and Fairfield in the GMC with six league games remaining.  The Comets travel to Oak Hills on Monday, April 24th to begin their two-game series against the Highlanders.  Oak Hills will visit Mason on Wednesday, April 26th.

4/24 @ Oak Hills lost 4-1 11-6 7-6
The Comets failed to take advantage of another strong performance by their pitching staff, dropping a 4-1 decision at Oak Hills last Monday afternoon.  All four of the Oak Hills runs were unearned as a result of two infield errors as the Highlanders scored twice in the first and twice again in the sixth.

Rollie Sheriff (1-1) gave Mason another quality start, pitching 5 1/3 innings.  He allowed no earned runs and just three hits to go with three walks and five strikeouts.  Ben Kraus came on in relief in the sixth to record the final two Oak Hills outs.  He allowed no earned runs, no hits, no walks and struck out one.

The Mason offense generated just five base hits on the day as an overall lack of offense and spotty defense at key moments in the game continue to plague the Comets.  Highlights on offense for Mason today included:

Nick Northcut:  2 for 3
J.P. Sponseller:  pinch hit double, RBI

The Comets conclude their two-game series with Oak Hills at home on Wednesday, April 26th at 5:00 PM.

4/28 Middletown won 5-0 13-6 9-6
Senior Will MacLean (2-1) pitched a gem at home last Friday vs. Middletown, blanking the Middies in a complete game 1-hitter by a final score of 5-0.  MacLean's one hit allowed, an infield single in the sixth, was all that stood between him and a perfect game as he struck out eight while facing just one over the minimum 21 batters in his seven innings of work.  MacLean also endured a 40 minute rain delay before climbing back on the mound to begin the fourth inning.  The Mason defense was sharp today, highlighted by two spectacular catches - one by left fielder James Grace and the other by shortstop Joe Powell.

Mason hosted LaSalle for a rare Sunday afternoon Senior Day, and the Lancers came out on top by a final score of 6-0.  It was a memorable day for all as Mason Baseball's #1 Fan, senior Maggie Satterthwaite, threw out the game's first pitch to her friend and senior catcher Michael Hall as the other 8 senior starters voiced their support from just behind the mound.

Senior Quinn Hecker was today's starter for Mason, pitching the first 2 and 1/3 innings (3 K's).  Combined with Zach Prusinski (3 and 2/3, 6 K's) and Joey Bowlin (1 inning, 2 K's), the senior trio allowed just two earned runs while scattering 12 hits on the day.

The Mason offense generated just four hits on the day, led by Matt Deskins with two singles.  Senior pitcher Will MacLean got his first varsity base hit as a Comet - a sharp line drive single up the middle.

The Comets host Sycamore on Monday, May 8th at 5:00 PM in their final GMC game of the season before focusing their attention on the upcoming state tournament.
5/8 Sycamore (makeup) won 11-6 17-7 12-6
Mason wrapped up GMC and regular season play on Monday with an 11-6 win over Sycamore at home. With the win, the Comets head in to tournament play with a 17-7 overall record, 12-6 in the GMC.

The game was tied 3-3 after three innings before the Comets scored four runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth to assume control of things.  Will MacLean was today's starter for Mason, allowing just one earned run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts in his three innings of work.  With the state tournament looming, the plan was to use three to four pitchers in today's game, to get guys some needed work but also keep them fresh.  Will Pfennig (5-1) came on in relief to pitch the fourth, and picked up his fifth win of the season as he was the beneficiary of Mason's four-run outburst in the bottom half of the inning.  Rollie Sheriff (one inning, 1 strikeout) and Nick Northcut (two innings, four strikeouts) finished things up on the mound for Mason.

The Comets produced thirteen hits on the day, and were led offensively by:

Joe Powell:  2 for 4, walk, 2 RBI's

REGIONAL SEMI-FINAL

vs. Springboro

@ Centerville, 5:00

won 13-0 26-3 18-0

MASON ADVANCES TO GREAT 8!

The Mason Comet Softball team outlasted Wednesday's nasty weather to defeat Springboro 13-0 in 5 innings and punch their ticket to the OHSAA Regional Final. Mason will meet local foe and rival, Lebanon at noon this Saturday, back at Centerville for a trip to the State Final Four.

Junior left fielder Zoe Bishop hit a three-run home run – the fifth of six three-run homers hit in the two games, along with a grand slam – in Mason’s four-run first inning, and junior first baseman Elana Harrison added a three-run shot during the nine-run second inning in which 13 batters paraded to the plate.

Senior catcher Brooke Rice finished with two doubles and three runs batted in, and freshman third baseman Tori O’Brien added two RBI on a pair of singles. Five different Mason players each scored two runs.

The cushion made senior right-hander Elle Buffenbarger’s life much easier. Springboro got one runner to third base against her, and that runner was promptly thrown out by shortstop sophomore shortstop Ali Weekley after straying too far toward home while Weekley was tracking down a popup behind second. Buffenbarger (23-3) followed up by striking out the last six batters she faced.

Saturday’s regional final matchup will be the fourth in the last five seasons for Mason, ranked fourth in the state coaches association Division I statewide poll and No. 2 in the Enquirer’s Division I coaches poll, and Lebanon, both polls’ champion and a 2-0 winner over the Comets on April 2. They also played a regional semifinal game in 2012. Mason reached the state semifinals last season.

Mason will take a 20-game winning streak into the game. The Warriors have reeled off 13 in a row. The Comets will be seeking their 6th overall Regional title and a return to the State Final Four.

The State Softball Semi-Finals are slated for June 1st at Akron Firestone Stadium at 12:30 pm. The Comets or Warriors will face the winner of the Hoover/Walsh Jesuit game.

Comet Softball Regional Runnerup

Masons (26-4) pursuit of another trip to the State Final Four was stopped short by Lebanon in the Regional Final on May 28th. After several days of delays the #1 ranked Warriors and #3 ranked Comets finally were able to play on a rare Sunday afternoon, with Lebanon winning 7-3. The Warriors went on to the State final and lost 4-3 to Elyria for the Division 1 title.

Mason opened the game with a run in the first inning, but Lebanon answered in the second scoring 3 and then two more in the third to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The Comets cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the sixth, but that's as close as they could get.

Olivia Popovich, Zoe Bishop and Hannah Lea had RBIs for the Greater Miami Conference champion Comets, who advanced to Akron last season and were looking for their fifth trip to state.

“It was a special year, but this is not what we had planned, so we’re disappointed for sure,” Mason coach Liann Muff said. “We had two goals this year. One was to go undefeated in the GMC, and they checked that off their list. Secondly, they wanted to win state, so this hurts. It’s going to hurt for a while. I told them I have no magic words to say except for the fact that I am the proudest coach of this group of young women.”

The Comets are losing four seniors: Elle Buffenbarger, Brooke Rice, Meg Hubbard and Emma Niehaus. A strong group of underclassman Comets will return in 2018 seeking the programs 6th overall GMC title.

GMC vs. GWOC Track Invite

@ Sycamore

The Mason boy's track and field team competed on Friday night at Sycamore in what is dubbed the "Clash of the Titans". This is a meet with the best of the GMC vs. the best of the GWOC conferences. Although most teams rested some key guys, the Comets did come out on top and looked great in the process. They won the meet in big fashion and did so by getting lots of 2nds and 3rds all night.

The big wins were the 4x100 relay team of Penn, Kemme, Hudnell and McNulty and Abel Nijakowski who came up big in the 1600 with a win. We also had great production out of Matt Miller who ran lights out in his races, along with pup Akari Porter, who is proving to be the real deal. Jack Troy put his nose into some big races with some great runners and Chris Simmons had a personal best long jump as well.

Overall, it was a solid night with lots of promise for the future. Next the boys will compete at the Centerville Relays on Friday, April 14th.

4/13 Harrison Invite
4/14 Centerville Relays

On Friday night, April 14th, the Comet Boys Track Team of went to the Elk Relays at Centerville. This meet had solid competition and the men of Mason were able to come out on top. The meet was a relay format, and we took wins in a few areas, but many seconds and thirds.

The big win of the night was the 4x400 relay, where the team of Porter, Mitchell, Ashraf, and Cobb ran to the state's 2nd best time, and a great victory. The men of the 4x100 also won, that was a team of Penn, Miller, Sora and McNulty. The team also got great production out of Cole Marvin in the Discus and Josh Huber in the pole vault. The distance boys did their thing and racked up many points and we also had a great showing from the hurdle crew who set a new school record in the shuttle hurdles. (Kemme, French, Nelson and Witmer Gautsch) It was a great night and the trophy went to Matt Miller for his outstanding performances.

Next up the boys will participate in the Westerville South Invite on Friday, April 21st.

4/21 Westerville South Invite

Friday night the Comets traveled to the Westerville South Wildcat Invitational.

Josh Huber also won the pole vault, and Hayden Cobb had a great time getting 2nd in the 400 dash.  Abel Nijakowski continued to run well, as he placed 2nd in the 3200.

Overall, the team did well considering a few tough setbacks. Mason boys will participate in the Wayne Warrior Classic on Thursday and Friday this week.

BOYS TRACK WINS 10TH GMC TITLE

The Mason Men's Track Team had a great night this past Friday at the 2017 GMC Track and Field Championships at Mason. The event was a close battle with the Aves of Sycamore and somehow, someway the Comet boys captured their 10th GMC title in a row.

All night the score went back and forth between the two GMC rivals.  In the final few races of the night it was within three points. The boys had to win the 4x400 at the very end to secure the victory. And they did just that!.

Winners on the night included Vince Jackson,  Cole Marvin and our 4x4 and the 4x8 relay teams. Mason had many great efforts and personal best times, but it was truely a team effort with all the Comets really coming together to stay GMC perfect.

Mason has won the league championship every year since entering the league in 2007-08. Only Princeton and Middletown have won more GMC Track and Field Titles. The Middies, who have won 16 conference titles, were the last school to win a GMC championship, other than Mason, back in the 2007 season, before the Comets were in the league. Princeton last won, one of their 20 league titles, back in the spring of 1997. The Vikings hold the record for the longest consecutive string of GMC titles (12) from 1982-1993.

Now its on to the Southwest District Championships this Wednesday and Friday back at Mason's Atrium Stadium. The Mason boys will be defending their District Championship and seeking their 9th title in the past 11 years.

The first four in each event qualify to the Regional Championships at Dayton's Welcome Stadium on Wednesday, May 24th and Friday, May 26th.

Boys Track Wins 9th District Championship!

Once again the Mason Boys Track and Field team surprised everyone and won another District Championship on their home turf last Friday night. The meet started with an average performance on day one, but day two things really came together.

Carter Witmer Gautsch was a monster winning both hurdle races. Andrew Kemme and Tunde Nelson both made it out too.   The 4x2 team qualified to Regionals and the 4x1 team shocked Sycamore and won.  Brian Hudnell somehow made it to Regionals in the 200-meter dash and the distance boys had a great night too.

Mikey Loehr got 2nd in the 1600 and Abel Nijakowski won the 3200.  Vince Jackson took second in the high jump and Davis Roby qualified in the shot put. Chris Simmons made it out in the long jump and Josh Huber won the pole vault.

The last event on the track Friday night was the 4x400 and it was all fitting that Matt Miller brought the baton home for his last victory as a Comet with his best time of the season.

Now its on to the Regional Championships at Dayton's Welcome Stadium this Wednesday and Friday. The Mason boys team last won back-to-back titles in the 2013 and 2014 season and were runner-ups the past two seasons.

The first four in each event will qualify for the State Championships at OSU's Jesse Owens Stadium on June 2nd and June 3rd.

5/24-5/26

Regional Championships

@ Welcome Stadium

The Mason Boys Track team had a GREAT showing at Regionals on May 24th and 25th winning a Regional Title; the programs 3rd in the last 5 years.

The Comet boys placed several on the podium in the top eight overall.  Carter Witmer-Gautsch was 8th as was Bryan Hudnell.  Davis Robey was 6th and Mikey Loehr just missed qualifying to state in 5th as did the members of the 4x100 relay.

Mason did have several qualifiers to State!. The 4x400 and the 4x800 teams made it!  The 4x400 of Miller, Porter, Ashraf and Mitchell won as did the 4x8 team of Miller, Nijakowski, Loehr and Troy in their race.  Vince Jackson was also able to make it out in the high jump (3rdplace) as did Abel Nijakowki in the 3200.

Lastly Hayden Cobb was 3rd overall in the 400 meter dash, and he also qualified to the state meet.  At the end of the night the boys racked up enough points to win the team title and receive the team trophy.

Great job, it was a true team effort.

6/2-6/3

State Championships

OSU Jesse Owens Stadium

The state meet went about as well as could have hoped for the Mason Boys Track team.  Except for a few gllitches, overall it was a great success!  The Comets placed 2nd in the 4x200 relay and 2nd in the 4x400 relay.  Both of those relays were long shots to get to the finals, so placing 2nd was pure joy.  Some tough decisions had to be made at State, but the boys took it well and it all worked out great.  It was a total team effort on these events.

Vince Jackson took 3rd overall in the high jump and had a great day, jumping “clean” the whole way through.  The 3200 did not go as well as Abel would have liked, sadly he had a side stitch and struggled a bit. Similarly, Hayden Cobb would have liked a redo on the 400, but he got great experience.

The boy’s 4x800 was silly fast this year, and Mason's time was our best of the year, but only good for 10th on this very fast day.  Each man had a great split and ran with great heart.

Overall, the team ran great, had a great time and came in 7th overall as a team.  It was very exciting experience and tremendous season of Mason Boys Track in 2017!
