8/16 OHSAA Preseason Invite @ National Trail Raceway TOP 20 2nd place

The opening act of the 2014 Mason Boys Cross Country season was a solid one on Saturday, Aug. 16th. The OHSAA Pre Season Invitational on the state meet course afforded us the opportunity to inspect the course under race conditions and to measure ourselves against some of the finest teams in the state. With the state meet 2.5 months away, it is way too early to be racing seriously. Every good team at the meet knew that as well. Still, when you put on a Mason uniform and a gun goes off that means it is time to bring it.

Mason finished second overall at the meet, just seven points behind St. Ignatius.

St. Ignatius 64
Mason 71
Hilliard Davidson 86

Nick Grismer finished second a mere 0.01 out of winning. Other scorers: Justin Koehler 13th Jakob Mueller 15th Tommy Stewart 16th Alan Gordillo 25th. More results at finishtiming.com.

Next up the Comet Boys CC will host the prestigious Mason Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6th at Corwin Nixon Park.

Mason High School hosted its 40th annual Mason Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Corwin Nixon Park as thousands attended this annual CC showcase event.

The boys came up just a little short in the boys varsity race. The Comets suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Dublin Coffman 100-104. Nick Grismer led the way winning his second invitational in a row with a stellar time of 15:42. Other scorers for Mason were Tommy Stewart, Alan Gordillo, Jakob Mueller and Jacob Bauer.

A special thanks goes out to the many Mason Cross Country Booster who volunteer countless hours in making the invitational a rousing success.

9/13 Miami University Meet

The Mason Boys Cross Country team took a limited varsity team to the Miami RedHawks Invitation on Saturday, but still emerged victorious after a tough battle with Springboro and a number of other teams. The Comets defeated Springboro 37-49.

They run a smart race, paced it well and finished strong. Jakob Mueller was the top finisher for Mason in second place. Other scorers were Michael Crawshaw, Logan McCormick, Mikey Loehr, and Tony Rabe. Sixth and seventh men Michael Uematsu and Austin Sewell finished ahead of Springboro's fifth man, adding more to the Panthers' score. The rest of the supporting cast ran well with many personal records.

Next up the teams participates in the Louisville Trinity Top 20 on Saturday, Sept. 20th.

9/20 Louisville Trinity Top 20 8th place

This past Saturday, Mason CC took the top boys to the Trinity meet in Louisville. At this annual prestigious event there were teams from 8 states, with state champs from 7 of the 8 states. The race also had state runner ups and 3rd place teams from about 5-6 of those states as well. The meet was like 2-3 state meets.

Our Comets finished 8th out of 68 teams. A fine finish though one that left us wishing for more. Maspm was only 3 points behind in-state rival Hilliard Davidson.

Nick Grismer led the way for the Comets. He was in the lead group for the whole race and finished a phenomenal 5th in a person record of 15:18. Also scoring for the Comets were Justin Koehler, Tommy Stewart, Jakob Mueller and Alan Gordillo.

The JV runners finished and exceptional second in their race, beating many fine teams. They were led by senior Sam Wendell.

The Mason Boys CC Team will face the best of the Southwest Region next Saturday at Troy, OH. Last season the Comets captured 2nd place at the event. The top 4 teams and top 16 indviduals will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 1st at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

10/25 Regional Championships (top 7) 1st

BOYS REGIONAL CC TROPHY RETURNS TO MASON

The Mason boys cross country team won their second regional title and punched their ticket to their eighth consecutive state meet appearance on Saturday at the Regional Championships at Troy last Saturday. The Comets boys last regional title came in 2008 although they have been close many years since then.

Nick Grismer continued his stellar season with a runner up performance placing 2nd overall with a blistering time of 15:42.61. approx 7 seconds off the leader. Justin Koehler and Tommy Stewart finished 10th and 11th.

The real key to victory was Mason's 4th, 5th and 6th man were stronger than their counterparts on any other team. The depth of the Comet team was the biggest factor on Saturday. Alan Gordillo, Jake Bauer and Jakob Mueller held down those positions and brought home the trophy.

Now it is on to the National Trail Raceway for the state championship on November 1st. Click here for all the information concerning the OHSAA State CC Championships.

Boys CC Captures 2nd State Title!

Saturday was a great day for the Mason boys cross country program at National Trail Raceway, The Comets made another memory at the highest level of competition, winning their 2nd State Championship. The race was a real nail biter with the team winning by a scant 3 points. The boys scored 121 points to overcome rivals Hilliard Davidson and St. Xavier!

The Mason boys took on Ohio's best plus 40 degree temperatures and 20 mph winds. Nick Grismer earned all-Ohio honors finishing 8th. Tommy Stewart, Justin Koehler, Jake Bauer and Alan Gordillo scored for the Comets. Jakob Mueller and Michael Crawshaw also participated. The guys showed their toughness by not allowing the weather to affect their focus. The team passed some very talented competitors down the final stretch and that made the difference.

Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches on this tremendous accomplishment both individually and as a team. Click here for more results photos and information.

8/16 OHSAA Preseason Invite @ National Trail Raceway TOP 20 1st place

The ladies of Mason XC were in action at the State course on Saturday Aug. 16th and they did well. The National Trails Raceway is home to the State XC meet and it also hosts an early season invite. The team kicked off the 2014 season with their first 5k of the season and were able to sneak out with a win. The team knew it would be close as many good teams were in attendance.

The Upper Arlington girls along with the St. Ursula girls put up a good fight, but the Comets depth was able to hold them off. We were led by Maegan Murphy and followed not far behind by Ellie Brush, both of whom were in the top 15. Leah Ford and Ailee Henderson also had solid days as did Erin Brush who rounded out our scoring. The race got out fast as expected and the ladies looked tough. As the race moved on the team was able to push through and place our 5th runner in front of other team’s fifth runners which did the trick.

The team looks solid this year, and has high hopes for a great season. Next up is the annual prestigious and competitive Mason Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6th.

@ Wilmington College (B squad)

1st place

This past weekend the girls CC team traveled to a smaller meet at Wilmington College. It was a great venue, but not a huge meet. The team was able to win the team title, but this one was not very close. The next team was 40 points back.

On a fun note, Maegan Murphy logged her first high school win!! YEAH!! She outpaced the competition and won by a good margin. Coming in third was Ellie Brush, then 5th was Leah Ford. They all broke the elusive 20:00 mark and just behind them was Ailee Henderson. We had a great day from Delaney McDowell who fell, slid into first base, and kept rolling. She was our 5th and final scorer with Bethany Angstadt just behind her.

Overall the team did well with a low score of 23. The team produced some good results from this event. Next up the girls race in the Xavier University Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 30th

Mason Invite

@ Corwin Nixon Park

3rd place

The Comets were in action this weekend at the prestigious 40th annual Mason Invitational, and did well. They did not get the win, but ran with some success on this challenging 3.1 mile course. The course features tough hills and a creek crossing but did that did not stop Carmel from rolling the competition. After Carmel it was a battle between the Comets of Mason and the team from Beavercreek. The Comets did their best, but were not able to get the win over their Ohio rival.

Mason was led by Maegan Murphy, who ran with a bit of a head cold and finished in the top 20 with a great effort. Not far behind Maegan were Ellie Brush and Ailee Henderson who battle tough for 5000 meters. They both rallied and did a nice job at competing and getting season best times. Delaney McDowell had a great day, and had a nearly personal best time. Bethany Angstadt also ran well and was the Comets 5th and final scorer.

The Comets took 3rd overall and did so without Leah Ford, an All Ohio runner. We had great runs from many of our JV runners as well, including Nia Myrie and Lauren Rose both of whom finished in the front of their respective races and did a great job for the Comets. Overall it was a solid day with many great races and season best times. Great job Lady Comets!

Next up Mason races at the Miami University Meet on Saturday, Sept. 13th.

9/13 Miami University Meet

This past Saturday the Cirls CC team traveled to a smaller meet at the always beautiful Miami University. The course was fast, the times were fast and the girls lit it up! We scored just 23 points and placed 7 girls in the top 10. Our top runner on the day was again Maegan Murphy who was now healthy again. She ran a personal best time of 18:23 and crushed the competition. She was followed this week by ERIN Brush who had a great day. She had a new best time and was our 2nd scorer for her first time in her career. She was followed by sister, Ellie, and Ailee Henderson.

Another big performer this week was Bethany Angstadt who was once again our 5th and final scorer running to a near personal best time. The Comets looked good with a new best average time on the season and appear to be closing the gap to the #1 Elks from Centerville.

9/20 Louisville Trinity Top 20 6th place

This past Saturday the Mason girls competed at the Trinity meet in Louisville. Squads from 8 states competed with state champs from 7 of the 8. The race also had state runner ups and 3rd place teams from about 5-6 of those states as well. The meet was like 2-3 state meets.

The Comet CC girls were up for the challenge, but clearly a little anxious about the quality of the field. The Carmel girls were the clear favorites, but the Mason girls were in the mix with the rest. It really came down to the dynamics of the large race, how you get out and how you work your way through the 750 + runners and 62 teams!

The race got out FAST! Mason was in good position, but many teams overtook us during mile 1-2 and we slipped a touch and ended up finishing in 6th place. The team would have liked to be a few spots up, but not a bad day.

Maegan Murphy had a great day placing 12th overall in this epic field, with Ellie Brush a bit back as our 2nd runner. Bethany Angstadt had a GREAT day again, and helped the team a great deal. We also had solid efforts turned by Delaney McDowell, Erin Brush and Ailee Henderson who were all a part of our scoring group. The team did manage to beat all Ohio foes, including Beavercreek and did this without Mason star Leah Ford.

The team will return to action next week at the Culver Indiana meet where they once again will see tough competition and a strong field. The JV girls at Trinity also faired well, with Emily Berquam turning in the best time of the day, surpassing some varsity runners with a season best time.

9/23 Kings Invite @ Landen Park (B squad)
9/27 Culver Invite (IN) 5th place

Lady Comets 5th at Culver

This past weekend the Mason Comets traveled to the beautiful grounds of the Culver military Academy. This place is truly special, with some of the best scenery and best competition of the season. The best of Indiana are present and a few teams from Illinois and Michigan too. The race was at 12:05, so it was a little hot but the girls ran pretty well. The race was a battle between IN #2-3-4 and the Comets. Mason finished in 5th place overall with a narrow margin separating the top 5 teams. (save Carmel with 26 points)

The team was led, once again by Maegan Murphy. She took 8th place and ran well. The next Comet was Erin Brush, a spot she has been in before, and she did a nice job marshalling the troops to come along with her. After Erin, was Ellie Brush, then Ailee Henderson and Delaney McDowell was our 5th and final scorer. Leah Ford was back in action in this race, she was the 6th Comet and was then followed by Bethany Angstadt. The girls ran well, but we know there is more in there. These girls are building strength and experience and getting ready for the post season. It is my hope, and belief that it will come together soon and they will run a great race as a team when the time is right. Other outstanding Comets this weekend were Taylor Wood who had a nice race, along with Lauren Rose and Amy Satterthwaite. Nia Myrie and Kendall Watkins also ran well and our team depth is really showing at this point in the season.

Next up is the GMC Championships at VOA on Saturday, Oct. 11th. The girls will be seeking their fifth straight conference championship.

Girls Win Another GMC Cross Country Title--Murphy is the GMC Medalist

The Mason Girls CC team rolled at the GMC Championships on Saturday at VOA winning the programs fifth consecutive league title! The Lady Comet runners took 6 of the top 10 places and set a new Mason low score record for the GMC at 25.

Maegan Murphy was the winner and runner of the year! After her was Ellie Brush, who raced well in 3rd place, and then a nice pack of Ailee Henderson, Bethany Angstadt and Delaney McDowell all who finished close together with great times. Erin Brush was just behind them to finish off our group of 1st team all GMC girls.

"The team looked strong, they punched it early, they pushed hard in the middle and raced hard down the stretch to finish with a nice exclamation point on the GMC," said Mason head coach Chip Dobson. "This team is very good and I think coming together nicely."

In the JV race Mason had 2 girls under 20:00 and several very close. Amy Satterthwaite and Nia Myrie were both sub 20, going 1, 2, then we took the next 12 spots! Our team (first 5) average was 20:09 which would have been either 3rd or 4th in the varsity race overall. Taylor Wood, Elizabeth Atkins and Annie McBeath were our final scorers in the JV race that helped bring us to a perfect score of 15.

Next up are the District Championshiops back at VOA on Saturday, October 19th. The Comets girls have won 5 consecutive Southwest District Championships.  Each race will qualify four (4) teams and the first sixteen (16) runners will qualify for the Regional Race in Troy.

10/18 District Championships 1st place

Lady Comets Race to Another District Title!

The girls had a good run at the VOA course on Saturday. The Lady Comets took their 6th district title in a row, and scored a Mason Girl's record of just 26 points. The team did well and ran far superior to any of the other Cincinnati teams. Mason also had a season low average time of the year, with much of that coming from Maegan Murphy's awesome 18:08 5K time.

The team also saw great runs from Ailee Henderson who had her season best and Bethany Angstadt who rocked again, with a new lifetime best time and top placing. The big surprise of the day came from AMY SATTERTHWAITE!! She rolled a 40 second PR and helped the Comets to a big victory. She was a last minute replacement and she had ice in her veins running smooth and strong.

Next Saturday the girls cc team will be looking for their 6th Regional Title in a row and 11 straight years qualifying for the state meet as they compete against some of the best teams in the state. The top 4 teams and top 16 indviduals will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 1st at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

10/25 Regional Championships 1st

GIRLS CC WINS 6TH REGIONAL TITLE

This weekend the Lady Comets CC team continued their march to State with another 1st place finish at the Regional Championships at Troy.

It was a fierce battle with rivals Centerville and Beavercreek both of whom have been racing great this year. The Mason girls took control of the race early and looked to be running away with the race. However a late charge from both the Elks and the ladies of Beavercreek made it scary.

At the two mark, Mason was probably ahead by 25 to 35 points but in the last mile Beavercreek pulled within a few points. It was a war with the Mason ladies fighting them off to the line.

The Comets were able to secure the win in the final 800 meters, earn their 6th Regional title and advance as a team to state. Maegan Murphy took second overall, but was valiant in her efforts to try to win over the state champion from Ursula. Ellie Brush and Ailee Henderson both ran well for the comets and finished in the top 16. Our final scorers were Erin Brush and Leah Ford.

Now its on to next Saturday for the defending Division 1 State Champions. Click here for all the information concerning the OHSAA State CC Championships.

11/1 State Championships @ National Trail Raceway 2nd place

Mason Girls CC State Runner-up!

For the third consecutrive season the Mason girls cross country team returned to the podium at the OHSAA State CC Championships on a cold and windy day last Saturday. The Lady Comets ran well but just not quite well enough to win a third state title in 3 years. The eventual winner, Centerville HS, ran a very strong race and could not be touched.

The Mason girls leader was once again Maegan Murphy who ran to a fourth place finish and was crowned an All-Ohio athlete. She was followed by Ellie Brush and Ailee Henderson. The Mason pack was tight with Erin Brush , Bethany Angstadt, Leah Ford and Delaney McDowell all running close behind. The girls ran well, but it was a tough day to face the Elks.

The Comet ladies gave everything they had and second place in the state is a great honor that most schools CC programs can only dream about. Congratulations to all the athletes and coaches on another outstanding season.

GAME

9/12 Winton Woods won 22-0 2-1 0-0

Mason Shocks Winton Woods

The Mason Football team upset visiting Winton Woods before a huge crowd on Tailgate Night this past Friday in one of the programs biggest wins in recent years. Not only did the Comets earn their 2nd win of the young season, but did so in shutout fashion by a final score of 22-0. The Comets (2-1) held Winton Woods, ranked No. 1 in the latest Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, to 86 yards total offense and four first downs. Mason is ranked No. 10 in Division I.

The Warriors could do nothing all night against a rejuvenated Big Green defense and solid play from special teams. After piling up 78 points through the first two weeks of the season, Winton Woods mustered only one first down and 49 yards through the first three quarters.

The scoring got underway early when senior defensive back Dalton Rogers picked up a Winton Woods fumble at the Winton Woods 18 on the second play from scrimmage and Comets senior running back Lucas Edwards followed a few plays later with a 3-yard touchdown run over right tackle.

Mason recovered a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff at the Winton Woods 39. Moments later, junior running back Jeron Besecker made a highlight-reel 15-yard touchdown run.

Junior Grant Kramer kept the game out of reach with three field goals for the Comets. His 42-yarder at the end of the first half was good for a 16-0 halftime lead. The kick hit the bottom bar and bounced through for Mason. Kramer added kicks of 26 and 30 yards in the third quarter to extend the lead and the Comets simply tried to run out the clock in the fourth.

Besecker led Mason with 45 yards on 12 carries and Edwards added 43 yards on nine carries as Mason gained 108 of its 169 yards on the ground and forged a 31:57 to 16:03 advantage in time of possession.

The Comets start GMC play this coming Friday when they visit Lakota East. The Hawks went 3-0 on the season with a 34-17 win at Northmont last Friday. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 at the Hawks Nest.

10/10 Middletown (homecoming) won 22-6 5-2 3-1

Comets Stop Middies!

On a soggy homecoming night, the Mason football team and their top rated GMC defense proved they are very good defeating Middletown 22-6 at Atrium Stadium. It was the Comets third straight win sending their record to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the always tough GMC. Middletown’s only score came on a Mason fumble, which Kyle Junior returned 77 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Mason was leading the conference in fewest yards allowed (199.0 per game) and points surrendered (12.5 per game) going into Friday.

Mason's Nick Pearson got the evening started with a opening kickoff 90-yard return for a TD. Mason drove 80 yards on the ensuing drive to take a 15-0 lead into halftime on Bryson White’s 5-yard run, and the Comets were able to make it 22-0 shortly after Middletown fumbled the first drive of the second half. Jeron Besecker ran it in from 4 yards out to cap a 47-yard drive for Mason. That would be all the scoring on the night for the Comets.

Mason held Middletown to 157 yards of offense and forced three turnovers. The offense totaled 235 yards, led by Bryson White’s 81 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. Avery Abraham added 64 yards on seven carries.

The Comets (5-2,3-1) will travel to Lakota West (4-3,3-1) next Friday for a big GMC showdown. In the latest city polls, the Firebirds are ranked #6 and the Comets #7.

The Firebirds found the back of the net early in the first half and led 1-0 till scoring two more goals late in the 2nd half. The Comets had few strong scoring opportunities in the game suffering their first shutout and loss since a 1-0 defeat to Olentangy Liberty in the 2012 State Semi-Finals.

Mason (0-0-1) opened the 2014 season at St. Ursula (0-0-1) on Saturday, Aug. 16th. In a game dominated by midfield play, both teams were able to create opportunities, but not capitalize, and played to a 0-0 tie.

The Bulldogs outshot Mason seven to two in the first half, while Mason outshot the Bulldogs ten to six in the second half. Mason had a decided edge on corner kicks, ten to one, but was unable to find the back of the net.

The Mason defense, anchored by center backs senior Meghan Grable and junior Emma Thacker, junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro and solid team defense all around, combined for the shutout. Bizzarro had eleven saves for the match.

Mason next plays Saturday, August 23rd, vs. Loveland (0-1-0) at home.

8/23 Loveland won 4-0 1-0-1

TOP Soccer... Tops at Girls Soccer Game!

It was a special evening at the Mason soccer field this past Saturday evening. Mason fans were treated to 4-0 Lady Comet win over visiting Loveland and also witnessed a special group of local soccer players exhibit their talents. The varsity players were introduced with members of Top Soccer, a league for players with special needs. At halftime, the girls joined their friends from Top Soccer on the field as part of three seperate half time exhibition games. It was a great evening for everyone!

Against the Tigers, Mason got four goals from three different players while outshooting Loveland with eight shots to Loveland's two.

Just over a minute and a half into the game, senior Emily Calvani was able to run onto a pass behind the Loveland defense, but was taken down from behind. The subsequent awarded free kick from about 21 yards out was taken by senior Jill Vetere. Vetere bent the kick into the upper 90, glancing the crossbar and ending up in goal, untouched. Mason managed two other shots on goal in the first half, while Loveland also managed two, but neither team was able to convert.

About thirteen and a half minutes into the second half, Vetere was able to get behind the Loveland defense, running onto a ball flicked forward by senior Rachel Holloway, and then beating the charging Loveland keeper with a shot from about 12 yards out for her second goal of the game. Mason's next goal came just over 26 minutes into the second half off of the head of senior Chandler Sloan. Sloan was able to fight through traffic in the box to get her head on the end of a corner kick bent into the box from the left corner by fellow senior Calvani and placing it into the back of the net. With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, freshman Annie Metzger took the ball to the end line on the left side of the goal and crossed it back into the middle of the box and onto the foot of a streaking Holloway, who surely finished, placing the ball past the Loveland keeper and into the goal.

Strong midfield and defensive play by Mason stifled the Loveland offensive attack, limiting them to just two shots on goal, both in the first half and helping junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro earn the second shutout of the year.

Mason next plays Monday, August 25th, vs. Seton (0-2-0) at home.

8/25 Seton won 2-0 2-0-1   Mason (2-0-1), with two goals from senior forward Jill Vetere in the first half, outlasted Seton (0-3-0) by a score of 2-0 Tuesday night at home. Mason's defense was stifling, limiting Seton to no shots on goal for the match.

About three and a half minutes into the first half, Vetere ran onto a ball played through two defenders and deep into the Seton zone by senior midfielder Dani Meyer. Vetere was able to place her shot by the charging Seton keeper for the first score of the match. Just under 15 minutes later, at the 21' 51" mark, senior forward Rachel Holloway found Vetere splitting two defenders with a perfectly timed run. Again, Vetere was able to place her shot by the charging Seton keeper to make the score 2-0.

Mason used seven different players on defense, holding Seton to zero shots on goal and two corner kicks for the match. Senior goalkeeper Caroline Smith saw her first action of the season between the pipes in the second half.

Mason next plays Saturday, August 30th, vs. Lebanon (1-1-1) at Lebanon.
8/30 @ Lebanon won 3-1 3-0-1

Mason (3-0-1) netted goals from three different players to defeat Greater Western Ohio Conference South opponent Lebanon (2-2-1) by a score of 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Lebanon. Freshman midfielder Annie Metzger scored the games first goal and her first career goal to get things underway for the Lady Comets.

The first 24 minutes of the first half saw both teams trying to find the best way to attack the other and create quality scoring chances. With just over sixteen minutes remaining in the first half Metzger was able to get behind the defense and to the end-line with the ball on her foot. A nifty move allowed her to beat a Lebanon defender and with the Lebanon keeper forced to play the near post, Metzger was able to shoot far post and score the first goal.. Less than six minutes later, senior midfielder Jill Vetere threaded a pass through the Lebanon defense and onto the foot of fellow senior midfielder Emily Calvani, who received the ball in stride and calmly fired a shot past the charging Lebanon keeper to make the score 2-0.

With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, freshman forward Emi Carlo of Lebanon fought through two Mason defenders and was able to power a shot through the sliding junior Mason keeper, Toni Bizzarro, making the score 2-1 at the half.

The second half was all Mason, as they outshot Lebanon nine shots on goal to zero, with one of the Mason shots finding the back of the net. Just over thirteen minutes into the second half, Metzger found the feet of senior forward Rachel Holloway with a cross from just outside the left side of the box. Holloway did not hesitate, as she quickly fired a shot past the Lebanon keeper, making the score 3-1.

Mason next plays Thursday, September 4th, vs. Lakota East (3-1-0) at home in their first Greater Miami Conference contest of the season. The evening is "Stuff the Stands" night. Bring your friends, family and neighbors out to support the Girls' Varsity in this key conference match-up and help "Stuff the Stands"!

Lakota East

STUFF THE STANDS NIGHT

won 2-0 4-0-1 1-0 Mason (4-0-1, 1-0-0), opened the 2014 Greater Miami Conference schedule with a quality win against Lakota East (3-2-0, 0-1-0) by a score of 2-0 Thursday night in front of a spirited "Stuff the Stands" home crowd.

With Lakota East playing five and even six defenders at times, Mason had to be patient and use good ball movement and possession to create scoring opportunities. The first of those opportunities converted to a goal occurred with 16' 28" remaining in the first half, when senior defender Jamilla Sylvester found senior forward Rachel Holloway with a long, cross pitch pass, allowing Holloway to quickly get behind the defense and beat the charging Thunderhawks' keeper with a well placed shot just over her outstretched arms and under the crossbar for Holloway's third goal of the season.

Mason entered half time up 1-0.

Just under five minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Julianne Berry passed a ball diagonally between two Lakota East defenders, into the Lakota zone and onto the feet of senior midfielder Dani Meyer. Meyer collected the ball on the right sideline and began moving directly toward goal. About 20 yards out, with the Thunderhawks' keeper charging, Meyers ripped a shot far post and into the side netting, making the score 2-0.

The Mason defense, with starting seniors Meghan Grable, Sylvester, Ellie Tomassoni and junior Emma Thacker and supported with quality minutes off of the bench by seniors Jordyn Martin and Tessa Stewart, played lights out, holding Lakota East to one shot on goal for the match and no serious pressure for junior keeper Toni Bizzarro throughout the match.

Mason next plays Tuesday, September 9th, at Hamilton (3-2-0, 0-1-0) in another Greater Miami Conference contest.
9/9 @ Hamilton won 6-0 5-0-1 2-0 Mason (5-0-1, 2-0-0) traveled to Hamilton (4-3-0, 0-2-0) Tuesday night for a Greater Miami Conference match-up. A consistent and focused offensive attack resulting in nineteen shots on goal and netting six goals from five different players yielded a final score of 6-0 in favor of the visiting Comets.

Just under 3 minutes into the contest, senior forward Jill Vetere found senior midfielder Dani Meyer with a long, cross pitch pass. Meyer collected the pass in stride, allowing her to get behind the Hamilton defense and fire a shot from the edge of the box, past the charging Hamilton keeper, and into the side netting. About five minutes later, junior midfielder Haley Moses was able to get on the end of a corner kick from Meyer at the back post and body the ball into the back of the net. Just over ten minutes into the match, senior midfielder Emily Calvani slotted a ball through two Hamilton defenders and onto the foot of Vetere, making a run into the Hamilton zone. Vetere took the ball in stride and fired a shot past the Hamilton keeper. Mason's final score of the first half came with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. Junior forward Katarina Schneiderman fired a shot on goal that was blocked by the Hamilton keeper. The rebound was put immediately back on goal and into the back of the net by senior forward Chandler Sloan, making the score 4-0 Mason at the half.

The next score did not come until almost 20 minutes had passed in the second half, and it was again with Mason on the attack. Sloan took the ball deep into the Hamilton zone on the left side of the field, beat a defender and crossed the ball to Vetere just outside the six, but in traffic. Vetere quickly moved the ball further across the zone to the back post and onto the foot of uncovered, freshman midfielder Annie Metzger who finished the sequence with a one touch shot, beating the Hamilton keeper. With just over twelve minutes remaining in the match, Mason was awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out. Meyer measured the kick and fired a well placed ball just through the finger tips of the Hamilton keeper and under the crossbar, scoring her second goal of the match and making the final score 6-0.

Mason used three keepers during the match, junior Toni Bizzarro and seniors Caroline Smith and Kristy McCullah. Mason's offensive pressure and defense limited the action seen by the keepers to just two shots for the match.

Mason next plays Thursday, September 11th, at home against Sycamore (2-3-1, 1-1-0) in another Greater Miami Conference contest on "Kick Crohns" and "Youth Soccer" nights for Mason.
9/11 Sycamore won 3-0 6-0-1 3-0

Lady Comets Stay Unbeaten!

Mason (6-0-1, 3-0-0) hosted Greater Miami Conference foe Sycamore (2-4-1, 1-2-0) Thursday night on what was Kick Crohns night. An energetic and spirited crowd was in attendance to support this great cause and their Lady Comets. With a strong second half effort and goals by three different players including junior midfielder Julianne Berry's first varsity goal, Mason prevailed over the visiting Aves 3-0.

The first half found Mason working to break a strong defensive game plan by Sycamore that held the Comets scoreless at the half for just the second time this season. Mason managed nine first half shots, of which seven were on goal, while holding Sycamore to zero.

Half time adjustments by the Comets resulted in a much more aggressive offensive attack to start the second half. Sycamore continued to hold Mason scoreless through the first twelve minutes of the second half. But, just over twelve and a half minutes into the second half, Mason was awarded a corner kick. Senior midfielder Emily Calvani took the kick from the right side and placed it high and approaching the far post. Berry tracked the ball and fought through traffic to get her head to the ball and direct it just inside the far post for the first goal of the match and of Berry's varsity career.

Just over a minute later, senior forward Jill Vetere received the ball in the Sycamore zone, dribbled left then right to free herself of two defenders and fired a shot from about 35 yards out toward the far post. The shot was low and hard, beating the Sycamore keeper and making the score 2-0.

About 4 minutes later, Calvani crossed a ball from just outside the box on the right side toward senior forward Rachel Holloway holding near the six. In traffic, Holloway was able to get her head on the ball and direct it on goal and past the Sycamore keeper.

Mason experienced a bit of deja vu (think 2012 State Finals), hitting the uprights and crossbar no less than five times before finally finding the back of the net. In all, Mason managed eighteen shots on goal, while allowing only one by Sycamore.

Mason next plays Tuesday, September 16th, at home against Princeton (0-5-1, 0-2-0) in another important Greater Miami Conference contest.

9/16 Princeton won 3-1 7-0-1 4-0

Mason (7-0-1, 4-0-0) had to come from behind for the first time this season to earn a win against a very hard working Greater Miami Conference opponent in Princeton (1-6-1, 1-3-0) Tuesday night at home. Mason's comeback was lead by senior forward Rachel Holloway with a two goal, one assist performance.

The first half again found Mason working to break a strong defensive game plan, this time by Princeton, that held the Comets scoreless in the first half. Mason managed fifteen first half shots, of which ten were on goal, and five corner kicks while holding Princeton to zero shots.

The second half opened much as the first half ended. Just under thirteen minutes into the second half, Princeton was awarded their lone corner kick of the match. Mason failed to clear the well placed ball into the box, allowing Princeton's only shot on goal for the match, which found the back of the net and put the Comets down 0-1.

Just over six minutes later, Holloway fought to gain possession of a ball Princeton failed to clear from in front of their goal. Holloway was able to gain enough advantage just inside the six to power the ball through several defenders and into the goal to even the score at 1-1.

While Mason had a number of opportunities over the next fifteen minutes, Princeton's defense and keeper were able to keep them out of the net.

With just under six minutes remaining, junior midfielder Haley Moses received a pass in the middle of the field which she was able to in turn pass to Holloway just as she was making a run between two defenders and into the Princeton box. Holloway was able to create just enough space to get off a solid shot which beat the charging Princeton keeper to make the score 2-1.

Mason's final goal came two minutes later, as freshman midfielder Annie Metzger brought the ball down the right side of the field, deep into the Princeton zone. After beating her defender with a smooth crossover, Metzger was able to find Holloway at the near post with a crisp pass which Holloway promptly one touch passed to senior forward Jill Vetere making a far post run. From just inside the six, Vetere was able to one touch finish to make the score 3-1 and ensure Mason's seventh victory of the season.

Mason next plays Thursday, September 18th, at Colerain (2-6-1, 0-3-0) in yet another important Greater Miami Conference contest.

9/18 @ Colerain won 5-0 8-0-1 5-0

An overall solid team effort and consistent and balanced play throughout the match yielded Mason (8-0-1, 5-0-0) a key Greater Miami Conference win on the road against a hard working Colerain (2-7-2, 0-4-1) squad Thursday night. Mason was lead by senior forwards Rachel Holloway and Jill Vetere with two goals each and a solid defensive effort to get the 5-0 victory.

Holloway started the scoring about seven and a half minutes into the match, running onto a through ball from Vetere deep in the Cardinal zone and firing a shot that hit the far post and bounced back across the goal and into the near post side netting. Just over eleven and a half minutes later, senior midfielder Courtney Thierauf found a streaking Vetere with a well placed ball over the top of the Colerain defense. Vetere calmly collected the ball and promptly fired a shot past the Colerain keeper. Mason took the 2-0 lead into the half about twenty minutes later.

Halfway through the second half, Mason was awarded a free kick just outside the eighteen after Holloway was held as she was breaking away from her defender and preparing to shoot. Vetere placed the free kick just to the right of the Colerain wall and just inside the post for her second goal of the match. Holloway got her second goal of the match less than two minutes later, beating her defender at the end line to the left of the goal, dribbling back to the six and firing a shot past the Colerain keeper. The final goal of the match was scored with just under five minutes remaining by freshman midfielder Annie Metzger. Metzger collected a well placed, cross-pitch ball into the Colerain box from senior midfielder Dani Meyer and fired a shot in traffic, beating the keeper and making the score 5-0.

Mason had nine shots, five of which were on goal, in the first half and thirteen shots, nine of which were on goal, in the second half. Colerain managed four first half shots on goal and another three on goal in the second half.

Mason's defense kept Colerain from getting deep into their zone throughout the match and forced all seven of Colerain's shots on goal from outside the eighteen. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro registered the seven saves as the Mason defense earned their seventh shutout of the season.

Mason next travels to play a nonconference match against Eastern Cincinnati Conference rival Milford (4-2-3, 2-0-2) on Saturday, September 20th.

9/20 @ Milford won 3-0 9-0-1 5-0-0

Mason (9-0-1, 5-0-0), on three second half goals from three different players and overall solid team defense, gained a hard fought nonconference victory against Eastern Cincinnati Conference rival Milford (4-3-3, 2-0-2) Saturday night 3-0.

It was a very physical first half with limited scoring opportunities for both teams, with Mason managing only four shots, three of which were on goal. Milford managed four shots on goal in the first half. The teams ended the first half knotted 0-0. Milford was whistled for fouls ten times in the first half, while Mason was whistled four.

Almost four minutes into the second half, senior forward Rachel Holloway was fouled as she dribbled into the Milford box. Fellow senior forward, Jill Vetere, lined up to take the awarded free kick. From just outside the eighteen, Vetere was able to place a kick low and hard, just under the diving Eagles' keeper for the first score of the game, putting the Comets up 1-0.

The next thirty minutes of the match saw a lot of back and forth play and solid goalkeeping from both teams. Mason's central midfield, senior Courtney Thierauf and juniors Julianne Berry and Sanika Pinnanath were very disruptive to Milford's offensive attack through the midfield throughout the night.

With just over six and a half minutes remaining in the game, senior center back Meghan Grable sent a ball deep into the Milford zone and to Vetere just to the right of the goal. Vetere two-touched a ball across the Milford goal face, about twelve yards out to Berry who one-touch volleyed a shot into the goal.

The final Mason score came with under a minute remaining. Senior defender Jamilla Sylvester sent a ball deep into the Milford zone. Holloway ran onto the ball to the right of goal, turned and chipped a shot high and over the Milford keeper, making the final score 3-0.

Mason had ten shots in the second half, eight of which were on goal. Milford managed seven shots on goal in the second half. Mason committed thirteen fouls in the second half to seven committed by Milford.

The Mason defense again limited an opponent's ability to penetrate deep into their zone forcing most of Milford's shots from outside the eighteen. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded eleven saves for the match, including a foot save at the goal line with under three minutes remaining in the game. The Mason defense earned their eighth shutout of the season.

Mason is again on the road Monday night, September 22nd, as they travel to play a nonconference match against Girls Greater Catholic League leading Mount Notre Dame (5-0-2, 3-0-0).

9/22 @ MND won 1-0 10-0-1 5-0-0

Mason (10-0-1, 5-0-0), on Dorothy Stang Field Dedication Night for Girls Greater Catholic League leading Mount Notre Dame (MND) (5-2-2, 3-0-0), prevailed 1-0 Monday night in a hard fought, defensive battle.

The first half saw both teams playing aggressive team defense, with Mason limiting the Cougars to two shots on goal while the Cougars held Mason to five shots on goal. One of those five shots on goal for Mason proved to be the game winner however, as it found the back of the net. With just under 8 minutes remaining in the first half, senior forward Chandler Sloan received a pass at the near post, but was quickly surrounded by MND defenders. Sloan created just enough space to get the ball across the goal mouth to fellow senior forward Rachel Holloway at the far post, who deftly volleyed a shot through traffic and on goal for the only score of the match.

Key minutes off of the bench from Sloan, senior midfielder Rachel Dooley, senior defenders Jordyn Martin and Tessa Stewart, junior forward Katarina Schneiderman and freshman midfielder Annie Metzger allowed Mason to maintain defensive energy and pressure throughout. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded five saves for the match and Mason, behind solid team defense, earned their ninth shutout of the season.

After three consecutive games on the road in a five day span, Mason returns home Tuesday night, September 23rd, for a key conference match against GMC opponent Middletown (3-8-0, 0-5-0).

9/23 Middletown won 6-0 11-0-1 6-0

Playing for the fourth time in six days, Mason (11-0-1, 6-0-0), won at home Tuesday night with five different players scoring against GMC opponent Middletown (2-10-0, 0-6-0). Mason managed six goals on twenty-six total shots on goal for the match, including three players recording their first varsity goals of their high school soccer careers: senior defender Meghan Grable, senior goalkeeper Kristy McCullah and junior forward Katarina Schneiderman.

A little less than two minutes into the match, senior forwards Rachel Holloway and Jill Vetere and senior midfielder Emily Calvani moved the ball into the Middletown zone with precision passing. With Calvani deep in the zone and under defensive pressure, she found Vetere just outside the box. Vetere took one touch to her left to find a clear line of sight to the goal and fired a shot inside the near post and past the Middies keeper.

While the Comets dominated possession and scoring opportunities over the next twenty-four minutes, they were unable to convert any of their scoring opportunities into goals. With just over fourteen minutes remaining in the half, senior forward Chandler Sloan dribbled deep into the Middletown zone and as she turned to dribble across the goal to shoot, she was taken down. Senior defender Meghan Grable calmly lined up to take the awarded penalty kick and fired a shot low and hard past the Middies keeper for her first ever varsity goal. The first half ended with the score 2-0 and Middletown being held without a first half shot.

Nearly ten minutes into the second half, Mason scored a pair of goals in about fifteen seconds. The first goal was the result of Holloway putting a rebound from a Vetere shot blocked by the Middies keeper, right back on frame and into the back of the net. Fifteen seconds later, Vetere collected a pass, beat several Middletown defenders with her dribble and fired a well placed shot past the outstretched arms of the Middies keeper for her second goal of the match.

With about twelve and a half minutes remaining in the match, freshman midfielder Annie Metzger carried the ball deep into the Middletown zone, beat a defender and fired a cross low and hard across the mouth of the goal. Senior goalkeeper, Kristy McCullah, with her goalkeeping duties over for the evening, had entered the game as a forward for Mason minutes before. A well placed touch of the ball as it crossed the goal mouth just inside the six netted McCullah her first ever varsity goal. About five minutes later, senior defender Tessa Stewart found junior forward Katarina Schneiderman with a long pass deep into the Middletown zone. Schneiderman collected the pass, beat a defender with her dribble and fired a shot low and hard, far post, for the final score of the match, making the score 6-0.

Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro and senior goalkeepers Kristy McCullah and Caroline Smith combined to record no saves for the match and Mason, using controlled possession throughout the match, recorded their tenth shutout of the season.

Mason will again be at home Saturday night, September 27th, for Senior Night in a nonconference match-up, facing another Girls Greater Catholic League power in Ursuline Academy (6-1-3, 2-1-0). Prior to the game, the fourteen seniors currently on the Varsity Roster will be recognized.

9/27 Ursuline lost 3-2 11-1-1 6-0

Mason (11-1-1, 6-0-0), celebrating senior night at home, was handed their first loss of the season by Girls Greater Catholic League power Ursuline Academy (7-2-3, 2-2-0) Saturday night by a score of 2-3. Mason managed only seven shots on goal for the match and only three of those in the second half. Ursuline converted on three of their five shots on goal for the match.

All of the scoring in the first half occurred over a little less than three minutes. In the sixteenth minute of the match, senior midfielder Courtney Thierauf fired a shot on goal that was blocked by the Ursuline keeper. Senior forward Rachel Holloway took advantage of the hard rebound, firing her own put back shot on goal to put the Comets up 1-0.

The lead was short lived, as a little over a minute later, Ursuline was able to convert a corner kick opportunity into a goal when senior keeper Caroline Smith was unable to get to the well placed ball into the center of the box.

Mason quickly answered when senior midfielder Jill Vetere found fellow senior midfielder Emily Calvani breaking behind the Ursuline defense with a long, cross pitch pass on the left side. Calvani quickly moved just inside the Ursuline eighteen and ripped a shot far post and into the side netting to put Mason up 2-1.

Mason took the 2-1 lead into the half. All fourteen seniors on Mason's roster played in the first half; #0 goalkeeper Smith, #4 forward Chandler Sloan, #5 midfielder Calvani, #7 defender Ellie Tomassoni, #8 midfielder Dani Meyer, #10 defender Meghan Grable, #12 midfielder Thierauf, #14 midfielder Rachel Dooley, #15 midfielder Vetere, #16 forward Holloway, #17 defender Jordyn Martin, #18 defender Tessa Stewart, #22 defender Jamilla Sylvester, #26 goalkeeper Kristy McCullah.

Much like the first half, all of the scoring in the second half occurred in just over three minutes. With a little over thirty-one minutes remaining in the match, Ursuline carried the ball deep into the Mason zone down the left side and crossed back into the middle of the field toward several charging players. Junior keeper Toni Bizzarro got a piece of the resulting shot with her hand as she dove to her left, but not enough to keep it from getting into the goal and tying the score 2-2.

With a little under twenty-eight minutes remaining in the match, Ursuline again carried the ball deep into the Mason zone down the left side and again crossed the ball back into the middle of the field, where it was collected by a midfielder and ripped into the upper left 90, giving Bizzarro no chance and putting Ursuline up 2-3.

Mason was very aggressive offensively over the last ten minutes of the match, but Ursuline's defense limited them to just one shot on goal.

Mason will resume conference play at home Tuesday night, September 30th, when Greater Miami Conference foe Fairfield (7-4-1, 4-2-0) visits.

9/30 Fairfiled won 2-0 12-1-1 7-0-0

Mason (12-1-1, 7-0-0), behind a solid first half and overall defensive performance, won in their final regular season home game in a key match-up with Greater Miami Conference opponent Fairfield (7-5-1, 4-3-0) Tuesday night by a score of 2-0. Senior forwards Rachel Holloway and Jill Vetere each scored in the first half and Fairfield was limited to two shots on goal for the match.

With over sixteen minutes gone in the first half, Mason had a throw-in deep in the Fairfield zone. A long throw from senior midfielder Dani Meyer just into the box was kicked around and ended up at the feet of Vetere at the top, left corner of the box, but in heavy traffic. Vetere settled the ball and passed to Holloway toward the center of the field and at the top of the box. Hollway took one touch toward goal and fired a shot over the outstretched arms of the Fairfield keeper and into the back of the net to put Mason up 1-0.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the first half, senior defender Meghan Grable took an errant pass and dribbled to midfield. Spotting Vetere making a diagonal run through the Fairfield defense, Grable launched a well placed pass onto the foot of Vetere just as she broke behind the Fairfield defense. Vetere quickly settled the ball, dribbled around the charging Fairfield keeper just inside the box and shot into the open net, putting Mason up 2-0 at the half.

In the first half, Mason had eight shots on goal while limiting Fairfield to just one shot on goal.

Both teams turned the defense up a notch in the second half, with Mason managing eight shots, but only three on goal. Fairfield again managed only one shot on goal as Mason's defense continued to limit opportunities inside the Mason zone. Mason junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had two saves on the night and the Mason defense earned their eleventh shutout of the season and the sixth in conference play.

Mason will travel to Rapid Run Middle School Thursday night, October 2nd, to face undefeated and Greater Miami Conference co-leader Oak Hills (13-0-0, 7-0-0). The Lady Comets are ranked #2 in the city and #3 in the state polls.

10/2 @ Oak Hills won 1-0 13-1-1 8-0-0

Lady Comets Shutout Oak Hills!

Mason (13-1-1, 8-0-0), playing previously undefeated and Greater Miami Conference co-leader Oak Hills (13-1-0, 7-1-0) on the road at Rapid Run Middle School, scored in the first half and then outlasted Oak Hills with relentless offensive pressure and stifling team defense to secure the 1-0 win. Senior forward Jill Vetere had the lone goal while Mason limited Oak Hills to just three shots on goal for the match.

Twelve and a half minutes into the first half, senior forward Rachel Holloway won consecutive head balls to keep the ball deep in the Oak Hills zone. The last of those head balls found the foot of senior midfielder Emily Calvani on the far right side of the Oak Hills box. Calvani was able to control the ball and quickly thread a pass to Vetere who promptly fired a shot low and hard from a near impossible angle to goal, beating the Oak Hills keeper for the only goal of the match.

Mason took the 1-0 lead into half time. Mason managed two shots on goal in the first half to Oak Hills one.

The second half saw both teams gain and lose momentum, as they each were aggressive offensively while remaining sound defensively. Mason managed three shots on goal in the second half, while Oak Hills managed two. Mason was able to keep Oak Hills from winning a corner kick while earning six for the match.

Mason junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro had three saves on the night and the Comets earned their twelfth shutout of the season and the seventh in conference play. Mason's defensive effort was led by senior midfielders Chandler Sloan, Calvani, Dani Meyer and Courtney Thierauf, junior midfielders Haley Moses and Julianne Berry, freshman midfielder Annie Metzger, senior defenders Ellie Tomassoni, Meghan Grable, Jordyn Martin, Tessa Stewart and Jamilla Sylvester and junior defender Emma Thacker.

With one game remaining Mason has clinched at least a tie for the 2014 GMC title. The Lady Comets play their final regular season and Greater Miami Conference contest next Tuesday night, October 7th, at Lakota West (7-6-1, 6-2-0).

LADY COMETS RUN THE TABLE IN THE GMC!

The Mason girls soccer team made GMC history Tuesday night with a 2-0 win on the road against rival Lakota West. The Lady Comets are the first girls soccer team to win a GMC title in the current league format with an unblemished conference record of 9-0-0. Mason (14-1-1) has dominated the GMC since joining the league in 2007 winning 5 outright league titles and sharing the championship in 6 out of the last 8 seasons.

Senior forward Jill Vetere scored late in the first half on a cross from senior midfielder Dani Meyer and Meyer added a goal on a penalty kick late in the second half, making the final score 2-0.

The Lakota West defense was very sound throughout the match, limiting the Comets to three first half shots on goal and seven total shots on goal for the match. Mason's defense and midfield likewise held the Firebirds to seven shots on goal for the match. Mason held a seven to four edge in corner kicks for the match.

With just over five and a half minutes remaining in the first half, Meyer received the ball on the left sideline, dribbled deep into the Firebird zone, cleared two defenders and crossed the ball into the center of the field. Vetere one touched a short hop volley shot off of Meyer's cross and into goal before the Lakota West keeper had time to react, making the half time score 1-0.

In the eighty-sixth minute of the match, Mason was awarded a penalty kick after a Lakota West player was whistled for "handling" a ball played into the box by Mason. Meyer calmly placed the ball on the penalty spot and placed a hard shot into the right upper corner of the goal, beating the Lakota West keeper.

Lakota West managed two quality opportunities in the first half, but both were thwarted by junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro. The Mason defense tightened in the second half, limiting the Firebirds to three shots on goal, all from outside the box and Bizzarro finished with seven saves. The Comets earned their thirteenth shutout of the season and eighth against GMC opponents.

The post season will begin for #1 seeded Mason on Saturday, October 18th, 12:30 PM (NOTE TIME CHANGE) at home against Western Brown. The winner advances to the Sectional Final, Tuesday, Oct. 21st at Kings, 7:00 PM vs. the Anderson/Amelia winner.

Lady Comets Push on in the Postseason!

Mason, playing in a Sectional match at home against Southern Buckeye Conference American Division opponent Western Brown last Saturday afternoon, used a relentless offensive attack that included two players scoring their first varsity goals; senior defender Ellie Tomassoni and junior midfielder Brielle Flora, to secure the victory, 5-0.

In the eleventh minute of the match, senior midfielder Dani Meyer placed a corner kick, one of eleven earned by Mason on the day, into the Western Brown box. The ball came across the Western Brown zone, where Tomassoni took a one touch shot back across the zone toward the far post and into the goal for Mason's first score of the match. Just over a minute later, senior defender Jamilla Sylvester found senior forward Rachel Holloway moving through the Western Brown zone. Holloway beat her defender and then the Bronco's keeper with a well struck shot to make the score 2-0.

In the second half, junior defender Emma Thacker found senior forward Jill Vetere just outside the Western Brown box with a crisp pass. Vetere dribbled to her right and fired a shot far post and into the side netting, making the score 3-0. About five minutes later, Vetere found Holloway at the six with a pass through traffic, which Holloway promptly put into the back of the net. With just under thirteen minutes remaining in the match, senior midfielder Rachel Dooley worked the ball down the right side and deep into the Western Brown zone. After beating her defender she crossed the ball toward the far post. Flora, cutting toward the far post from her outside midfield position, got her head to the ball and back toward the near post and past the Western Brown keeper. Final score 5-0, Mason.

Western Brown tried several different defensive alignments and strategies during the match, but were unable to slow the relentless Mason offensive attack. Mason took 23 shots on goal for the match, while Western Brown managed just one.

The Mason defense allowed just one shot on goal, provided two assists (Sylvester and Thacker) and utilized three keepers during the match; junior Toni Bizzarro, senior Kristy McCullah and senior Caroline Smith, earning their fourteenth shutout of the season.

The post season will continue for Mason (15-1-1, 9-0-0) on Tuesday, October 21st, at Kings High School when they face Southern Buckeye Conference American Division champions Amelia (16-1-1, 10-0-0) beginning at 7:00pm.

SECTIONAL FINAL

vs. Amelia

@ Kings, 7:00 PM

Girls Win Sectional Title

With a 4-1 victory against Amelia Tuesday night at Kings HS, Mason now advances to play in the District Final match. With the scored tied 1-1 at the start of the second half, Mason used aggressive offensive pressure to score three goals and stifling defense to limit Amelia to no shots on goal in the second half to secure the win. The Comets were lead on offense by seniors Rachel Holloway with two goals, Chandler Sloan with a goal and an assist, Dani Meyer with two assists, Jill Vetere with a goal and Jamilla Sylvester with an assist. On defense, Mason was lead by senior Meghan Grable and junior Emma Thacker, holding the top scorer in the area scoreless and without a shot on goal for the match.

In the seventeenth minute of the match, Mason was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards outside the Amelia goal. A well place shot by Meyer rebounded off of the crossbar and stayed deep in the Amelia zone, where Holloway battled to the ball and beat the keeper for the first goal of the match.

About two and a half minutes later, Amelia was awarded a penalty kick for a Mason foul in the box. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro made the initial save on the penalty kick, but the Amelia player was able to get to the rebound and put the ball into the net. However, the goal was waved off and disallowed by the linesman and center referee. The last 20 minutes of the first half saw Mason create a number of other opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on any of them. Mason went into the half up 1-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, a lengthy discussion ensued with the officials and coaches. In the end, the disallowed goal was allowed and the second half started with the game tied 1-1.

Much like in the first half, Meyer fired a shot low and hard from distance, with the Amelia keeper making the initial save, but allowing the ball to rebound back toward the center of the box and into the path of Vetere, following the initial shot with one of her own that made the score 2-1 Mason just seven minutes into the second half.

With just over thirteen minutes remaining in the match, Sylvester found Sloan with a long pass into the Amelia zone. Sloan, beat her defender to the inside and chipped a shot over the outstretched arms of the charging Amelia keeper, putting Mason up 3-1. Just over four minutes later, Sloan found Holloway directly in front of the Amelia goal with a pass through traffic. Holloway calmly received the ball and fired a shot over the Amelia keeper and just under the crossbar to score and bring the final score to 4-1 Mason.

Mason's midfield and defense smothered the high powered Amelia offense throughout the match, contesting ever attempt to work the ball into the Mason zone and thus into a scoring opportunity. Amelia managed just two shots on goal for the match, both associated with the awarded penalty kick, while Mason took twelve shots on goal for the match.

The post season will continue for the Mason Comets (16-1-1, 9-0-0) on Saturday, October 25th, at Lakota West High School at 3:00pm when they face the Greater Western Ohio Conference South champion Springboro Panthers (14-2-2, 5-0-0) in the District Final.

SWEET SIXTEEN FOR GIRLS SOCCER!

For the third consecutive year, the Mason Girls Varsity Soccer Team is District Champions. With a 3-0 victory against Springboro in the District Final match at Lakota West HS on Saturday night, Mason advances to the Regional Semi-Final match for the third consecutive year. Mason used a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense throughout the match to earn the win. The Comets scored on two set pieces resulting in two assist on the night for senior midfielder Dani Meyer and had two players score their first varsity goals during the match. Senior defender Jamilla Sylvester got on the end of a corner kick to score and senior forward Rachel Dooley scored after deflecting a clear by the Springboro keeper and hustling to chase down the rebound and put it into an empty net.

The first fifteen minutes of the match saw both teams playing tough team defense and fighting to control the midfield. About fourteen minutes into the first half, Mason was awarded one of five corner kicks for the match. Meyer sent the ball to a spot about 10 yards directly in front of the far post. Sylvester met the ball just as it was hitting the ground, driving it into the Springboro goal, making the score 1-0.

With just under twelve minutes remaining in the first half, Dooley was chasing down a ball played deep into the Springboro zone and behind the defense. The Springboro keeper was forced to attempt to clear the ball just outside of the box. Dooley was able to close on the keeper just as she was clearing the ball and deflect it back towards the goal. Dooley continued her pursuit of the ball with a Springboro defender on her heels and was able to calmly tap the ball into the open net, making the score 2-0 at the half.

Just under two minutes into the second half, Mason was awarded a free kick for a foul about 30 yards from the Springboro goal. Meyer placed the free kick into the Springboro box about 8 yards in front of the goal where it was deflected in traffic by junior midfielder Haley Moses onto goal and into the net, giving Mason a 3-0 advantage.

Mason's central midfield and defense continued their focused team defensive effort, contesting ever attempt by Springboro to work the ball into the Mason zone, thus limiting Springboro to eight shots for the match, with only five of those on goal. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded five saves for the match and Mason earned their fifteenth shutout of the season.

The post season will continue for the Mason Comets (17-1-1, 9-0-0) on Tuesday, October 28th, at Kings High School at 7:00pm when they face a familiar opponent in the Oak Hills Highlanders (18-1-0, 8-1-0) in the Regional Semi-Final match. GREAT EIGHT FOR LADY COMETS SOCCER!

The rematch between the top two teams in the Greater Miami Conference in the Regional Semi-Final match was decided by penalty kicks Tuesday night, with Mason prevailing, 3 kicks to 1. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro saved three of the penalty kicks taken by Oak Hills and shot as the fifth shooter for Mason, burying her penalty kick to her left to secure the win. Mason moves on to face Turpin in the Regional Finals. Mason and Oak Hills played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer to force the match to penalty kicks.

The first half saw Oak Hills manage five shots on goal to Mason's two. However, at the half, the score was tied 0-0. In the second half, Mason was able to limit Oak Hills to two shots on goal while Mason also managed two shots on goal. The score at the end of regulation remained 0-0.

Mason managed one additional shot on goal during the additional thirty minutes of overtime soccer, while holding Oak Hills to no shots on goal through both overtime periods.

Mason again played focused team defense throughout, limiting the potent Oak Hills attack to seven shots on goal through regulation and both overtime periods. Junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded seven saves through the 110 minutes of soccer played and Mason earned their sixteenth shutout of the season.

In penalty kicks, Mason kicked first and senior forward Rachel Holloway quickly found the back of the net for Mason. Oak Hills answered on their first kick, making it 1-1. Mason's second kicker, senior midfielder Dani Meyer, placed her shot just over the crossbar. Oak Hills second kicker had her kick blocked by Bizzarro, keeping the score 1-1 after two kickers. Senior midfielder Emily Calvani kicked third for Mason and scored to her left. The third kicker for Oak Hills again tried to go to Bizzarro's left and again Bizzarro was up to the task, blocking the shot and making it 2-1 Mason. Senior defender Meghan Grable kicked fourth for Mason and pushed her kicked just outside the left post. The fourth kicker for Oak Hills placed her shot just inside the right post, but Bizzarro was able to just reach it and force it wide and the score remained 2-1. If Mason scored with their fifth and final kick in the first round of penalty kicks, the match would be over. Kicking fifth for Mason was Bizzarro. Her kick was low, hard and to her left and found the back of the net, giving Mason the win.

The post season will continue for the Mason Comets (18-1-1, 9-0-0) on Saturday, November 1st, at Lakota West High School at 3:00pm when they face the Eastern Cincinnati Conference runner-up Turpin Spartans (15-4-1, 5-1-1) in the Regional Final match. Mason and Turpin are two of eight Division 1 soccer teams remaining in the postseason tourney. The winner will play in the State Final Four beginning Tuesday, Nov. 4th at a site to be determined.

Three In A Row....Regional Soccer Champs Again!

For the third consecutive year, the Mason Girls Varsity Soccer Team is the Southwest Region Champions! On Saturday afternoon at Lakota West High School in the Regional Championship match the Mason Comets scored twice in the second half to beat a dynamic Turpin team. The match saw senior midfielder Courtney Thierauf score her first varsity goal. Mason moves on to play in the State Semi-Final match Tuesday night.

The match opened with Mason the aggressor, pressuring the Turpin defense and forcing an early corner kick. About ten minutes into the match, Turpin turned the tables on Mason and with the wind at their backs, began to pressure Mason's midfield and defense, creating several quality scoring opportunities. The first half saw Turpin manage five shots on goal, including a penalty kick awarded with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half for a foul committed in the box. Fortunately, junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro was up to the task and saved the penalty kick that was placed just inside the post as she was diving to her right. Mason managed four shots on goal for the half. At the half, the score was tied 0-0.

Mason came out much more aggressive offensively in the second half with the wind at their backs and forced a corner kick just over three minutes into the half. Senior midfielder Dani Meyer hit a near perfect corner kick high and toward the far post that junior midfielder Julianne Berry was able to track through traffic and head into the back of the net, putting the Comets up 1-0. Over the next twenty-eight and a half minutes, the two teams fought to establish control of the game, with neither having a clear advantage. With just over eight minutes remaining in the match, freshman midfielder Annie Metzger brought the ball down the right side and deep into the Spartan's zone, drawing a second defender. Metzger was able to find Thierauf about ten yards in front of the far post as the second defender approached. Thierauf settled the ball, moved to her left and fired a left-footed shot far post to make the score 2-0. Mason's defense tightened in the second half, holding Turpin to three shots on goal while with the wind at their backs, the Comets were able to generate six shots on goal.

Mason was able to hold the Turpin offensive attack to eight total shots, all of which were saved by junior goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro. The Mason defense, lead in the middle by senior Meghan Grable and junior Emma Thacker and with seniors Ellie Tomassoni, Jamilla Sylvester, Jordyn Martin and Tessa Stewart earned their seventeenth shutout of the season.

The post season will continue for the Mason Comets (19-1-1) on Tuesday, November 4th, at 7:00pm at Bellbrook HS against the Central Region Champion Dublin Coffman Shamrocks (13-1-7) in the State Semi-Final match.
