The Mason Boy's Cross Country team start the season last Saturday with a solid 1st place finish on the state meet course at the annual OHSAA preview.

Junior Nick Grismer led the top 5 scorers for Mason finishing 5th, followed by Senior Tom Clark in 7th. Next was senior Zac Thompson in 11th,  senior Ethan Valentine in 18th and finishing out the top 5 was senior Lucas Sagraves in 27th.

Next up the team competes at the Sycamore Sunset Invite on Monday, Aug. 19th.

The Mason Boy's JV ran in the Wilmington Invite on Saturday, Aug. 24th finishing 5th out of 18 teams.

Next up for the Comets is the Loveland Tiger Invite on Saturday, Aug. 31st.

The Mason Varsity boys split their squad at the Loveland Invitational and finished 1st and 2nd in team scoring, taking 7 of the top 10 places overall. Mason "A" beat Mason "B" by just 1 point. On a course with lots of tight turns, the Mason runners quickly found their way to the front and stayed there, mostly battling each other.

The next team was Turpin, who had a few very good runners finishing in the top 10. Tirba, Turpin's number one runner, finished 2nd behind Mason junior Nick Grismer, who run the race overall in 16:00 flat, his best time of the season. Next for Mason was senior Tom Clark, in 3rd place, a time of 16:28. 

Mason won the Open race at this event as well, with an individual champion. Junior Tommy Stewart finished in a personal and season best time of 17:37, leading the Mason open team to the victory on the 5k course. See individual finishes below:

Next up is the annual prestigious Mason Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 7th.

The 39th annual Mason Cross Country Invitational last Saturday was a perfect day as the Comet Boys ran a strong race finishing first among an excellent field of teams and runners. Mason finised 50 points ahead of its nearest competitor, Trinity of Kentucky.

Mason’s top finishers were junior Nick Grismer in 1st place overall at the meet. He ran conservatively early in the race and moved up into first position in the last mile. He was followed closely by senior Tom Clark in 3rd overall. Senior Zac Thompson finished 3rd for Mason (9th overall) followed by senior Dylan McElhenney and sophomore Justin Koehler who finished close together to round out the top scoring places for Mason. The boys' cc team competed in the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational at Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville, KY on Saturday, September 21.

This was a midwest showdown with many of the best teams in the region present to run on arguably the fastest course in the area. Steady rain over the 12 hours prior to race time left a few muddy spots and several puddles on the course but overall the course remained in great shape and maintained it's reputation for giving runners fast times.

With several nationally ranked teams out of reach, Mason set it's sights on being one of the top Ohio schools in the race. The top 4 ranked schools in Ohio would compete against each other for the first time this season. Defending state champions, St. Xavier, Dublin Jerome, Mason and Hilliard Davidson all finished in the top 10 schools overall. The Mason boys finished a very respectable 6th place behind St. Xavier (3rd) and Hilliard Davidson (5th). The other schools in the top 6 were from neighboring states.

Every Mason runner ran their fastest time of the season thus far. Nick Grismer, Tom Clark and Zac Thompson were the first 3 Mason finishers, who all finished below the coveted 16 minute mark along with past Mason greats like Zach Wills (2011), Matt Kahl (2011) and Chris Rapp (2007). It was not the first time for Grismer or Clark but was the first time ever for three Mason runners to finish under 16:00 in the same race. Rounding out the 5 for Mason were Dylan McElhenney in 16:34 and Ryan Sanders in 16:36.

Next up the Comets participate in the Culver Invitaional on Saturday, Sept. 28th.

Mason has traveled to Culver Academies in Culver, IN since 2009 to compete against the best of Indiana and other area schools. Mason finished better this year than ever before earning 3rd as a team behind Carmel and Columbus North. Both are strong distance programs year after year. While the times were slower than normal, Mason finished very well and had the depth to beat out other schools.

Of note on the individual level were Mason performance leaders, junior Nick Grismer and seniors Tom Clark and Zac Thompson are consistently in the top 3 for Mason and did so again at Culver this year. Senior Lucas Sagraves filled in the very important 4th man spot for Mason and sophomore Jake Bauer completed the top 5 scorers for Mason. These guys stayed focused and got the job done in the tough part of the race.

Mason Boys CC Dominate GMC Championships

Like the Lady Comets, the Mason Boys CC team won their fourth consecutive GMC Title. Mason junior Nick Grismer (15:48.30) was the individual champion and the first of five Mason runners to finish in the top 11 runners overall. For his efforts, Grismer was named the 2013 GMC CC Athlete of the Year. It was the 1-3-5-6-11 Mason finish that led the way for the 26-77 point victory over the second place team, Sycamore.
Mason’s second man across the line was junior Tom Clark in 16:00. Close behind was junior Zac Thompson in 16:01. Mason's 4th place finisher was sophomore Dylan McElhenny (16:26). Jacob Bauer and Justin Koehler were 16th and 20th, respectively. Senior Lucas Sagraces, Mason’s fifth finisher and 11th overall in 16:36, hoisted the trophy during the awards ceremony after the race. Overall, Mason piled up 7 runners in the top 20.

Of note, 98 Mason boys competed in the GMC Open race. The Comet boys won the Open Title with an almost perfect 16 points. Tommy Stewart was the overall champion with 16:45. He was followed by Jacob Mueller (2nd), Steve Yates (3rd), Ryan Sanders (4th) and Peter Bruns (6th). In all, 114 Mason boys runners, shared a part of this years GMC Championship!

The teams returns to VOA next week as they battle for District Championship and to continue to move on to the Regional Meet. The girls will be competing for their fifth consecutive title, while the boys will try to make it six in a row! 1,2,3 For Mason Boys at District CC Championships!

The Mason Boys Cross Country team keeps rolling in the postseason. After a 1st place last week at GMC on the same course, they win another District Championship last Saturday at VOA. The team scored 27 points over 2nd place Kings with 66 points while pouring in 5 runners in the top 11 overall and 7 in the top 13. Mason achieved its sixth consecutive District Title sweeping the team to next weeks Regionals.

Junior Nick Grismer was the individual District Champion. He led the three pack of himself, Tom Clark and Zac Thompson (both seniors) throughout the race and the three of them pulled away from the rest of the field for a 1-2-3 finish. All three finished under 16 minutes for the second time this season. They were followed by junior Tommy Stewart in 16:29, in 10th place. This was Tommy's first varsity appearance and his first time scoring for Mason in the championship season. Sophomore Jake Bauer in 16:34 finished out the scoring top 5. Seniors Dylan McElhenny and Lucas Sagraves were 6th and 7th men for Mason today, both in the top 13 overall.

The Mason Boys CC Team will face the best of the Southwest Region next Saturday at Troy, OH. The top 4 teams and top 16 indviduals will advance to the state meet on Saturday, November 2nd at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio. The Comets finished 2nd overall last season to winner St. Xavier.

BOYS CC ADVANCE TO STATE!

The Mason Boys Cross Country team advance to the State Cross Country Championship race for the 7th time in a row on Saturday after finishing 2nd overall in a highly competitive Regional Championship! They scored a Mason record low of 61 points to finish 2nd behind a very good 1st place team St. Xavier.

Senior Dylan McElhenny held the runner up trophy during the awards ceremony as Mason’s 5th finisher in 27th place in 16:29. Junior Nick Grismer ran a personal best time of 15:35 today, finishing 3rd overall. Seniors Tom Clark and Zac Thompson also ran very solid races, finishing in the top 16 overall. Junior Tommy Stewart took another step forward this week improving his best time to 16:23 and finishing 4th man for Mason. And rounding out this regional runner-up team was Dylan McElhenny, Lucas Sagraves and Jake Bauer.

It was a bittersweet day for Mason Boys' cross country at the State Meet. The "sweet" was finishing the season as the 5th best school in the state! A tie with 6th place team Twinsburg was broken in Mason's favor as 6th man, senior Lucas Sagraves, was better than Twinsburg's 6th. St. Xavier repeated as the Division 1 Champion winning by an almost 60 point margin. Mark Hadley of Boardman was the overall individual winner with a time of 15:10.

Mason continues it's strong state placing tradition with this 5th place finish. For the 7th year straight, Mason has finished in the top 10 at the state meet, sharing that feat with only St. Ignatius. However, a quick glance at the team results reveal that Mason only had 6 runners cross the finish line, instead of 7. Mason's #1 runner all season, junior Nick Grismer, was unable to complete the race. This significantly crippled Mason's strength. But senior Tom Clark stepped up huge, finishing in the coveted top-16 overall group, in 13th place. He ran an incredible 15:49.

Mason's second finisher was senior Zac Thompson, also a veteran state runner. Next was junior Tommy Stewart, who while it was his first state meet performance, ran like he'd done it before, keeping a level head and moving up 6 places in the last mile. Fourth for Mason was senior Dylan McElhenny who did a great job maintaining position over the last mile. Fifth and sixth for Mason were sophomore Jake Bauer and senior Lucas Sagraves. Jake Bauer finished as the 16th best sophomore distance runner in Ohio and Lucas, in his first state appearance, made the difference for his team helping them secure the 5th place finish.

Congratulations to all 114 Mason runners who share a part of this accomplishment! We could not be more proud of you all for your efforts that made this accomplishment possible. Thanks to so many of you that made the trip to cheer on your team!

This weekend the Lady Comets saw their first race in the 2nd annual OHSAA preview meet. This is a meet that give athletes a chance to test their legs on the state course. This is a rare opportunity, although it is early in the season.

This year the schedule was very stretched out and our varsity group did not run until nearly 4:00pm. It was hot and sunny, but they fared well. The girls were led by our a young sophomore in Maegan Murphy. She lead the way with her third place finish, and was followed by another sophomore, Leah Ford who took 6th.

The girls also saw great production out of Kinsey McBeath and Nicole Steinbicker, both seniors who placed highly and helped lead the Comets to a strong win by nearly 80 points. Two freshman also represented well, newcomers Ailee Henderson and Ellie Brush both ran great and completed their first HS 5K in strong fashion.

This year the girls scored just under 50 points and had a nice pack of runners in the top 20. The team looks strong again, and is hopeful that they can pick up where they left off last year.

The Mason Girls Cross Country team had a strong outing at the Wilmington College Invite on Saturday. The team had clear instructions to run in a pack, and run side by side and they did just that! They ran tight, and ran well after some early encouragement.

The team was led by Leah Ford who broke 19:00 for the first time this season, and was 2nd overall. Not far behind was Maegan Murphy, she ran a solid race on this challenging course and took 6th place overall.

Here came our pack! They were great, we too places 8-13, all together in nearly one unit. As directed, they ran together, and only at the end did they sprint it out to the finish as they battled each other to the line.

The team scored under 40 points, and bested the next team by over 60. Our next 3 scorers, were two Freshman, Ellie Brush and Ailee Henderson, then one of our captains, Senior Nicole Steinbicker. It was a good day for the Comets and they are looking like a strong team.

Next up is the Loveland Tiger Invite on Saturday, August 31st.

This weekend’s Mason Invite did not disappoint as the annual meet was huge, competitive and very well attended by fans and family. Their were over 3800 entrants, and a huge gathering to watch the show. The Mason girls ran well finishing third overall, but were clearly outmatched by the #3 and #4 teams in America, Carmel and Assumption.

The girls were led by Leah Ford, with freshman Ellie Brush not far behind. Then came a close pack of Murphy, Steinbicker and Henderson rounding out our top five scorers. Ford managed to still run a solid time, as did Brush who had her season best. Senior Nicole Steinbicker continued to lead the team as she raced to a solid time as well on this challenging 5k course.

The race developed quickly with Carmel taking a strong lead, then Assumption closing hard in the last mile to just nip the Comets. Locally, Mason was the top Ohio team, but were followed closely by Beavercreek who ran close behind. Overall, it was a solid effort, and the girls look to be on pace to do great things this season.

The Ladies of Mason traveled south along with several other local cross country teams to one of the biggest, oldest meets in Kentucky. (58th annual)
The Trinity Valkyrie meet is held at EP Tom Sawyer Park, the site of the 2012 NCAA National Cross Country Championships.   The meet was loaded with several of Kentucky, Indiana's and Ohio's top teams.  

The Mason girls placed 2nd overall, well back from the Greyhounds of Carmel.   The team ran well, and had some new faces up front.  They were led by two freshman, Ellie Brush and Ailee Henderson, both of who were in the top 35 of this massive race.  Erin Brush also had a great race, and proved to be a significant force on this team.  Kinsey McBeath and Leah Ford both scored as they too ran well,  and rounded out the scorers for Mason.

The race had over 40 teams and 350 racers from 5 states. The Mason girls were joined by others from Ohio, including Sycamore, Turpin, Colerain and Seton locally and Hilliard Davidson as well.  

The Mason Girls CC Team is ranked No. 1 in the city and state polls. Next up the Comets participate in the Culver Invitaional on Saturday, Sept. 28th.

This past Saturday the Mason Girls CC team raced the best of Indiana and Illinois in the Culver invitational. This meet features outstanding competition on what is considered by many the most beautiful cross country course on which one could compete. The course follows the perimeter of a serene lake and the grounds of the historic military academy. The course is flat and usually fast, but this year it did not want to give up and blazing fast times.

The race was easily won by Carmel, now #3 in the U.S. and then it was a battle between 25+ other teams. The Mason girls ran well, but were defeated by Columbus North and West Lafayette, both of whom ran just slightly better. .The girls placed 4th overall, just a few points out of 3rd.

The girls were led by Leah Ford who broke 19:00, followed by Ellie Brush, and the Kinsey McBeath who had a big day. Erin Brush was next and then Ailee Henderson rounded out our scorers. The team ran as a solid pack through 1 mile, then it broke up until later in the race when they actually came back together to have a very tight “pack time” and our 2-5 girls all finished within 20 seconds of one another. Overall, it was a solid effort and the girls appear to be coming together for the post season run.

Mason Girls Win Another GMC CC Title

A young group of Lady Comets powered to their 4th consecutive GMC Cross Country Championship. They did it by scoring just 35 points and putting 6 girls in the top 12 of the race.

Individually, sophomore Leah Ford led the way for Mason finishing 3rd overall. She was followed closely by two freshman Ellie Brush (4th place) and Ailee Henderson (5th place). Senior Kinsey McBeath (10th place) and junior Erin Brush (12 place) rounded out the Mason scoring. Junior Bethany Angstadt finished close behind the Mason pack in 13th place.

The young and talented Lady Comets ran well, and were given some good individual challenges by other runners in the league who stepped up in the face of GMC competition. The team returns to VOA next week as they battle for their fifth consecutive District Championship and to continue to move on in the postseason.

The Girls Cross Country team had a solid day Saturday at the District meet at VOA. The team had just 42 points and a solid time average to win their fifth consecutive District Championship.

The conditions were tough with rain, wind and worse, but the girls stepped up and ran well. The Lady Comets had a few new personal best times and a few nice breakthroughs. Leah Ford placed 3rd overall with an 18:30 and Ellie Brush had a big PR with an 18:44 just behind her in 4th. Ellie Henderson was in 3rd for the Comets with Maegan Murphy not far behind. Our 5th and final scorer was Erin Brush who had a solid day and continues to be a key factor for the Comets. Bethany Angstadt and Kinsey McBeath both ran well.

MASON GIRLS CC ADVANCES TO STATE!

The Mason Girls competed Saturday at the Regional meet in Troy. They were facing their toughest competition in Ohio in 2 years, as the Centerville, Beavercreek, Springboro and Ursuline Girls teams all were very loaded this year. The Lady Comets runners battled it out valiantly and had some great races, while some girls who had a what coach Dobson described as a "tough day at the office." Mason secured one of four spots that will advance to state by finishing 3rd overall.

Mason was led by Ailee Henderson for the first time in her HS career. She was followed by Ellie Brush, and Maegan Murphy. The team struggled across the line after a very fast start, but was able to hold off the charging Beavercreek and Springboro teams to hold onto 3rd place. Centerville was the overall winner, followed by Ursuline, with Beavercreek finishing fourth.

The Comet effort was helped greatly by the stellar races from Kinsey McBeath and Bethany Agnstadt who both placed in front of most teams 4th and 5th runners.

The team is healthy, focused, motivated and ready for the challenge as they head into next Saturday's State Meet at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

MASON GIRLS CC WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE TITLES

It was a great day to be a Comet on Satuday, November 2nd! With only two girls returning from last years team, the Mason Girls Cross Country Team won their program's 2nd consecutive Division 1 State Championship at the 36th Annual Girls Cross Country State Meet at National Trails Raceway.  The Lady Comets rebounded from their tough day last Saturday at the Regioinal competition (3rd) to finish "lights out" when it counted at the State Meet.

Mason girls ran fast times on the soft and slow course and were able to hold off the charging ladies from Beavercreek (2nd place). Mason came in first overall by a margin of over 30 points to beat out what many thought would be a battle with Centerville. Saturday was Mason's day though, as the Elks (4th) though did not quite show up. Annie Heffernan from St. Ursula (3rd place) was the individual winner with a time of 18:13.90.

Mason was led by Leah Ford, who ran to a strong finish and made the podium in 14 place.  Just behind her was the hard finishing Ellie Brush who also made the podium in 15th place.  

Saturday's championship was a total team effort.  The ladies had a great pack time (time from 1-5) and just kept coming across the finish line one after the other. Not far behind Brush was Ailee Henderson and then Maegan Muprhy, who fought through a challenging year to help her team out once again.   

In a fitting way, the Comets last and final scorer was Mason's only senior, Kinsey McBeath. Kinsey had a great race and helped her team by finishing ahead of every other school's 5th runner by well over 15 places. This was huge and helped seal the deal over the competition.   Erin Brush and Bethany Angstadt also did their part by
displacing several runners. In fact they were ahead of every other team's 5th runner at the entire meet.  

The Mason girls State Title was achieved by a total team effort. Each runner did their part, stepped up and helped the Comet cause.  This years team came together in an awesome and wonderful way to achieve an unbelievable 2nd State Title! Congratulations to all the Mason girls and coaches on a tremendous achievement!

The Mason Comets fell to Springboro in their season opener last Friday by a final score of 34-21. The Panthers jumpeed out in front 14-0 early in the first half.

Mason responded in the second quarter, a bruising 9-yard run by back Graham Brockway. Then, with Springboro poised to close the half with more points, the Comet defense forced a fumble. On the next play, Comet quarterback Jensen Harris lofted a beautiful pass downfield to Cameron Gunnels. The speedy receiver jetted for a 95-yard touchdown. It was even at 14 heading into the half.

Despite a strong effort from Mason QB Jensen Harris, who finished with more than 250 all-purpose yards, Mason couldn’t muster another touchdown until the end of the fourth quarter. Harris connected on a 6 yard pass to Daniel Casey for the Comets final score.

Graham Brockway rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries. Harris was 10/22 for 200 yards from the air.

The Mason Comets evened their season record at 1-1 last Friday with a 24-7 home opener victory against Bishop Watterson. Senior quarterback Jenson Harris went 17-for-23 passing for 217 yards and finished with two touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Cameron Gunnels had three catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns (one pass, one rush). See complete scoring summary below:

The Comets fell to Oak Hills 30-7 on a stormy night at Atrium Stadium. Mason was held to 132 total yards on offense while the Highlanders collected 304 yards. The Comets fell behind 24-7 in the first half and was not able to get on track. Mason's lone score came early in the 2nd quarter on a 1-yard by Jensen Harris.

Mason will visit Middletown (1-3) on Friday, Sept. 27th.

The Mason Football Team got back on track in a big way last Friday night with an overwhelming 41-14 defeat of Middletown. Mason scored through the air, on the ground and on special teams in a game that started ugly and never got prettier.

Mason scored on all three possessions of the first half, turned a Middletown fumble into a score and returned a punt for a touchdown in taking a 28-0 lead. Meanwhile, the Comet defense was holding Middletown to four first downs and 133 yards in offense with three of the first downs and 79 of the yards coming on the final drive of the half when the Middies were stuffed from the Comet 1 on back-to-back plays.

Middletown finally got on the board late in the third quarter when EJ Colson busted outside and scampered 27 yards to trim the deficit to 41-7.
Middletown finished with 275 yards of total offense and nine first downs, 105 yards and five first downs caming against the Mason second team, including a 75-yard drive on its last possession. That ended with Allante Simmons getting loose for a 27-yard scoring run with 10 ticks left in the game.

Mason finished with 322 yards of total offense in a balanced performance that included 150 yards on the ground and quarterback Jensen Harris misfiring on just one pass in adding 172 yards through the air.
Harris also added a pair of scoring runs in the first half, including a 1-yard plunge on the opening drive.

Middletown looked like it would answer the Mason score on their first drive but fumbled at the Comet 18. The ball was picked up and returned deep into Middletown territory by Mason. Two plays later, Harris connected on his first scoring strike of the night. Middletown, however, did not record another first down until its last drive of the half.

The Comets will host Lakota West on Homecoming Night this Friday at Atrium Stadium.

The Mason Football team fell short in a 37-23 loss to Lakota West on Homecoming night at Dwire Field. The Comets battled back from several deficits during the contest. With 6 minutes to go in the fourth quarter a Jensen Harris 1-yard TD rush trimmed the Firebird lead to 7 points, but that was as close as Mason would come.

Highlights for Mason included junior Lucas Edwards rushing for 115 yards on 27 carries. Senior Jensen Harris was 17-30 for 186 yards. Matt Stewart rushed for a TD and Tyler Krabbe received a pass for another TD.

Mason is on the road this Friday at Hamilton.

The Comet Football Team evened their GMC record to 2-2 with a 59-13 smashing of Hamilton last Friday night. Senior running back Lucas Edwards rushed 10 times for 110 yards and two scores and also snared an 18-yard TD pass. Matt Stewart added 50 yards and a touchdown for Mason.

Mason lost at home to playoff bound Fairfield last Friday by a score of 31-21. The Comets outgained the Indians in total yards of offense 389-329, but fell victim to some miscues that allowed to many Fairfield scoring opportunities. Senior QB Jensen Harris passed for 221 yards on 20/35 completions. Lucas Edwards rushed for 143 yards on 17 carries and scored 2 TD's. Cameron Gunnels caught 6 passes for 76 yards. Andy Whitney had two sacks.

Mason will close out its 2013 campaign at home this Friday, in the Battle of the Sky, versus Sycamore HS.

Mason's 2013 Football campaign ended in an overtime 35-28 loss to Sycamore last Friday evening on senior night. The Comets came back from a 21-7 third quarter deficit to take a 4th quarter 7 point lead. Sycamore scored again with 4 minutes remaining to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Comets failed to score in their overtime possession while the Aves did, to end their season with a win.

Senior Jensen Harris closed out his Comet carrer with 17/29 passing for 261 yards and a TD. Another receiver, senior Cameron Gunnels, caught 6 passes of 151 yards and a TD. Junior Lucas Edwards rushed for 73 yards on 18 attempts.

Mason participated in the Hadley Invitational this past Saturday at Weatherwax. The Comets were 4th out of 35 teams with a 317. Mason was 3rd out of the division 1 teams today.

Next up the Comets will seek to defend their 2012 GMC Title on Wednescay and Friday at Weatherwax.

The Mason boys competed in the GMC Championship last week and shot a 2 day total 635. Mason finished 3rd just 2 strokes behind winner Oak Hills. Junior Scott Purvis won the GMC Medalist title and Player of the Year for the conference with a 2 day total 1 over par 145 (73 & 72).

Junior Nick Anderson also earned a spot on the first team with a solid score of 159. Senior Tim Welsh and Freshman Justin Kim were named to the second team all-conference team.

The girls golf team grinded through at Hamilton Elks on Wednesday to beat both St. Ursula and Sycamore. The Comets won with a 163, Sycamore was second with 172 and St. Ursula was third with a 175. Junior, Katie Tomassoni, was co-medalist shooting an outstanding even par round of 36.

Mason girls competed in the Dublin Jerome Invitational Saturday at Scioto Reserve Country Club in Columbus, OH. The Comets finished third place beating the 2 time state champions by one stroke. The team posted a combined score of 301.

The Mason girls golf team concluded their regular season by shooting an impressive round of 153 at Walden Ponds. This was 20 strokes better than second place Mt. Notre Dame and 25 shots in front of Faifield. The Comets finished 10-0 for their regular season.

All 6 girls played great. Miranda Dubler shot 2-under par, 34 to earn her fifth medalist honors. Hannah Bennie tied with a pkayer from Fairfield for runner-up shooting a 39. Other great scores were Quinn Atkinson and Katie Tomassoni with 40's and Janisa Bondoc and Morgan Schaffer with 41's.

Mason girls competed in the Sacred Heart Invitational this weekend in Louisville, KY at Hurstbourne Country Club. The tough greens created a challenge for the Comets. They stuck with it and finished 4th out of 18 teams shooting a score of 349, missing third place by 4 shots.

Senior Miranda Dubler shot a 77 and finished 7th out of 93 girls. The team will compete for their 5th GMC Championship this week at Weatherwax GC on Tuesday and Friday.

The Mason Girls' Golf Team made it back-to-back GMC Titles this past Friday at Weatherwax GC. The Comets outshot Sycamore by 14 strokes to claim their fifth conference championship in seven seasons of play in the GMC. Head coach Karen Binzel, earned her 2nd Coach of the Year honor.

University of Dayton bound, Quinn Atkinson (junior), finished 2nd overall at the tournament with a score of 155 (78-77) to lead the Lady Comets. GIRLS GOLF REPEATS AS DISTRICT CHAMPS!

The Mason Girls Golf machine just keeps on rolling. Thursday at the Southwest District Championships, the Lady Comets earned their second consecutive District Title, qualifying the entire team to next weekends state tourney.

Mason out shot second place Sycamore 327-339 to place 1st on the leader board. The Comets were behind by two strokes after 9 holes. The back 9 was the difference as the team put together a solid round to outlast the Aves and third place St. Ursula (344).

Mason was led by senior Quinn Atkinson with a round of 77. Other scores for the Comets: Katie Tomassoni 81, Miranda Dubler 82, Morgan Schaffer 87 and Hanna Bennie 94.

The team will compete at the OHSAA State Championships next Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19th at the Ohio State University. Mason finished 5th overall last year. The Comet Girls Golf program has won 3 State Championships (2008, 2009, 2010).

The Mason Girls Golf team finished 5th overall at this past weekends OHSAA Division 1 State Golf Championships. Mason shot two day totals of 327 and 329. Dublin Jerome was the overall champion with two day totals of 313 and 309.

Mason and West will battle for a GMC Championship next Tuesday, Oct. 8th at West. The Firebirds (6-1 GMC) go into the game with two league games remaining against the Comets and Lakota East. Mason can clinch their fourth GMC Championship with either a tie or win over West.

The Comet boys (8-0-1) won their fourth GMC Championship last night with a 0-0 standoff versus the 3rd ranked Firebirds (7-1-1). The tight, low-scoring affair came as no surprise. The only goal Mason has allowed this season was Sept. 12 at Hamilton. Lakota West has allowed only five goals. Mason has won six of 11 regular season and postseason meetings with West since 2005.

Mason got its first shot on goal at the 24-minute mark of the first half, but Jack Clark’s shot sailed high. Moments later, Comets junior Jude Iroh caromed a shot off the right post. The second half began in much the same manner, with neither team able to take advantage of its few scoring opportunities. After Mason was called for a high kick, a West player delivered a free kick toward the center of the goal, but it was deflected away by Mason senior keeper Spencer Parrish (6 saves). Iroh narrowly missed again moments later with a shot over the crossbar. Clark’s bicycle kick with less than three minutes remaining was the Comets’ last chance, and it sailed high.

“To survive a battle like this will help us,” said Comets coach Paul Reedy. “You’re going to have games like this late in the season. Inevitably it’s going to happen. We accomplished our major regular-season goal, which was to win the conference.”

The Mason boys (13-0-1) celebrated its first GMC back-to-back title since joining the league in 2007. The Comets, ranked No. 1 in the city and state polls, will play at home on Thursday night against GWOC champion, the Lebanon Warriors. They close out the regular season this Saturday at Fairmont. Mason has earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Sectional Tournament. They will play Mt. Healthy (#26 seed) at home on Saturday, Oct. 19th in the first round beginning at 11:30 AM.

In one of the teams best offensive showings of the season, the Mason boys soccer team avenged last season's 0-0 tie with Lebanon, routing the Warriors 8-0 on Thursday night. It was the Comets 13th shutout of the season. The team has given up only one goal all season. See recap below:

The Mason Boys Soccer team (17-0-1) allowed only their 2nd goal of the season in a 6-1 postseason rout of Milford. The Comets snare a Sectional Championship and advance to the District Finals with the win. Senior Jack Clark scored 4 of the Comet goals, while JJ Iroh added two.

The boys vye for their 4th District Championship this Saturday when they face 8th seeded Walnut Hills (13-3-1) at Fairfield HS beginning at 7:00 PM. The winner will advance to next Wednesday's Regional Semi-Finals.

The Mason Boys Soccer team captured their second consecutive District Championship on Saturday with a 5-0 shutout of Walnut Hills. Senior forward Jack Clark and senior defender Josh Grant each scored two goals to lead the Comets. Spencer Parrish notched his 15th shutout of the season in goal.

The Southwest District Title is Mason's 4th overall. The Comets (18-0-1) have outscored their opponents 20-1 so far in the postseason. The team advances to play No. 2 seeded Turpin (15-0-4) in the Regional Semi-Finals on Wednesday night, 7:00 PM at Lakota East. Turpin defeated Tecumseh 4-0 to advance.

BOYS SOCCER ESCAPES TURPIN TO ADVANCE

Comet fans at last nights Mason-Turpin boys soccer Regional Semi-Fina at Lakota East can take a big sigh of relief...at least for now. The Comets escaped with a 1-0 win over an extremely talented Turpin squad who threw everything they had at the Mason defense. The first ten minutes of the contest, the Turpin offense launched a barrage of shots on the Mason defense, many that could have easily found the back of the neck except for the outstanding efforts of the Mason backline and goalie Spencer Parish (8 saves on the night).

“(Turpin) put us totally on our heels the first 10 minutes,” said Mason boys’ coach Paul Reedy. “They had four or five corner kicks, three or four throw-ins that pinned us in, and our goalkeeper (Spencer Parrish) made a good save in the very first minute of the match.”

The Comets weathered the Turpin storm and late in the first half began to apply their own pressure to the Turpin defense. The first half ended 0-0. The second half the Mason mid-field and defense limited the Spartan's opportunities and continued to apply serious offensive threats of their own.

With 7:32 remaining Mason senior Eric Liddell's service throw in found fellow senior Josh Grant in front of the Turpin goal who headed it in for the only score of the game. The ball snuck in just beneath the Turpin crossbar. Grant ripped off his shirt and pogo’ed toward his teammates to celebrate. Mason's defense turned away a tremendous Turpin effort in the final minutes to secure the win and help the team advance to the Regional Finals.

The shutout was the teams 16th of the season and set a new all-time season record for wins for the boy's soccer program (19). This Saturday's Regional Final will be a rematch of last years championship. Lakota West (16-2-2) defeated Beavercreek on Tuesday night to punch their ticket to the Great Eight against the Comets. Last season Mason advanced for the first time to the State Final Four after defeating West in a 2-1 shootout.

Saturday's game promises to be another high stakes meeting between two storied programs who battled for a GMC Championship earlier this season. On October 8th they played to a 0-0 draw with a league title on the line. The contest is slated for a 12:00 start at Lakota East High School. The winner will advance to next Wednesday's State Semi-Final contest versus Olentangy Liberty/Dublin Coffman winner at a site to be determined.

MASON SOCCER TEAMS RETURN TO FINAL FOUR

The Mason Soccer Teams achieved unprecedented accomplishments Saturday as both the boys and girls programs once again earned trips to the State Final Four for the 2nd consecutive season. Last year Mason was the first Division 1 school to send both their high school soccer teams to the State Championship round of four. Mason had to overcome opponents who appeared to have the upper hand in the regional title matches at Lakota East. The Lakota West boys and St. Ursula girls gave the Comets everything they wanted and more, despite tough resilient Mason boys and girls defenses.

Comet Boys Win Dramatic Regional Title Match Against West

The Mason Boys Soccer Team is headed back to the State Final Four for the second year in a row. Sophomore striker Gary Zhao placed a perfect shot into the West goal with 5:33 left in the first overtime to help the Comets claim a 2-1 win over GMC foe, Lakota West, and earn a second consecutive Division 1 Regional Title. Zhao's goal surprised everyone after the ball ricocheted off the cross bar, struck the far post and angled into the Firebird goal, giving his team a sudden death victory..

“I got the ball. There was one guy in front of me, so I took a touch to the right and shot it. It was a dream come true,” Zhoa said.

Early on it didn't like Saturday was going to be a good day for the Comets. The Mason defense endured a barrage of first half corner kicks and short sided throw-ins by the Firebird offense. The Comet back line and goalie Spencer Parrish did their job, as they have all season, giving up only the fifth goal scored on the team in 2013.

Senior Jack Clark's strike with less than 8 minutes remaining in regulation put the first goal of the game on the board. Five minutes later West countered with a goal of their own (approx. 3 minutes remaining) to tie the game and send it to overtime. Before Zhao's heroics in OT, the contest looked like it might be a repeat of last year's Regional match, which Mason won on PK's.

"It was a classic West-Mason battle," said Mason head coach Paul Reedy. "The players laid it all out there today. I'm just so proud of our guys finding a way to win today. It's a great feeling."

No. 1 ranked Mason (20-0-1) advances to Wednesday OHSAA State Semi-Final against a familiar opponent. The Comets get a rematch against unranked Olentangy Liberty (16-3-1) who defeated Dublin Coffman in 2 overtimes to advance.

Last season the Comets lost to the Patriots 1-0, who then went on to win the 2012 State Champioinship. Wednesday's contest will be played at Centerville HS, with a 7:00 pm kickoff. The winner will play for a State Championship at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 9th.

BOYS SOCCER TO MAKE FIRST STATE FINAL APPEARANCE

The Mason Boys Soccer Team will play for the 2013 Division 1 State Title this coming Saturday at a special 12:00 kickoff in Columbus, Ohio (see time change alert below). The Comets knocked off the 2012 defending State Champion, Olentangy Libert,y 1-0 on a rainy Wednesday night in the State Semi-Finals at Centerville HS. Senior forward Jack Clark added another highlight to his stellar HS career scoring the games lone goal in the early minutes of the 1st half.

Clark slipped through the defense with the ball, moved left parallel with the goal line and fired a shot back across his body that beat the Patriot keeper to the lower left side for his 30th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes into the contest. The Olentangy defense had their hands full all night with Clark as he almost scored on two other opportunities in the 2nd half.

It was the Mason defense though that really puzzled and frustrated the Patriot players. The Comets dominated play for most of the 80 minutes, allowing Liberty to get off just one shot on goal, a weak header right to keeper Spencer Parrish in the 71st minute. Mason had lost to Olentangy Liberty (17-4-1) in the state semifinals last season and evenge was certainly a factor last night for the Comets.

"We knew Mason's offense was spectacular, but we're surprised by the qualifty of their defensive play," said Olentangy head coach Rick Collins.

Ranked No. 1 in the final state coaches’ poll, Mason (21-0-1) has allowed a mere five goals this season and Wednesday’s shutout was their 18th. The Comets will face the No. 3 ranked team in the state, Mentor (18-0-4), this Saturday at Columbus Crew Stadium. They defeated Whitehouse Anthony Wayne 1-0 in their State Semi-Final match.

Mason Boys Achieve OHSAA Division 1 State Soccer Title
The Mason faithful displayed shirts that said "Unfinished Business" at the boy’s state soccer championship at Columbus Crew Stadium. After their 80 minutes of play last Saturday, they can now print shirts that read, “Finished Business!” The Comet’s achieved their school’s first State Championship in soccer with a thrilling 1-0 win over Mentor, before a large group of Mason faithful, at Ohio’s soccer palace in Columbus, Ohio. After losing in the final four in 2012 the team would not be denied this year.

As he has done all year, senior Jack Clark put the ball on his foot and made Mason soccer history. With 16:57 remaining in the game, Clark lifted a chip shot over the Cardinal keeper and into the back of net to score the game’s only goal. Clark’s goal was assisted by sophomore teammate Gary Zhao. But it wasn’t just Clark’s talents that sent the state trophy home with the Comets.

As they’ve done throughout the entire tournament and season, Mason’s defense shined as bright as Saturday’s crispy, but sunny Autumn day. The Comet defense and senior goalie Spencer Parrish allowed just one goal in the post season (5 on the season) and notched the team’s 19th shutout (school record) of 2013. As many expected Mason finished with an undefeated record of 22-0-1.

"I'm very proud of our players and how they represented our school, our conference and our city,” said Mason head coach Paul Reedy. “The city of Cincinnati hasn't had a state championship in quite awhile." 

The Comets had six shots overall and four shots on goal, compared to Mentor's two shots and only a single shot on goal. Both teams fought physically; Mason had 11 fouls and the Cardinals had nine fouls.

Mason is the first Southwest Ohio boy’s team to win a D1 State Championship since 1986 (Turpin, class 3A). They are also the first boy’s GMC soccer team to ever win at State. Lakota West won a girl’s D1 State Championship in 1999.

The senior class of Spencer Parrish, Sam Conkright, Charles Bramwell, Joshua Grant, Caleb Griffth, Conner Couchot, Harrison Taylor, Zach Lust, Eric Liddell, Marcin Zubrowski, Jack Clark, and Angel Tramontin finish their 4-year careers at Mason with an overall record of 67-11-5.

The All-Ohio Awards were announced and with no surprise Jack Clark was named Mr. Soccer and the Division 1 Player of the Year in Ohio. Senior defender Josh Grant earned 2nd Team All-State honors. For the second consecutive year Clark was also named the GMC Player of the Year (shared). Head Coach Paul Reedy received the GMC Coach of the Year recognition for the second consecutive season.

Mason was ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as the No. 1 team in the US in their final poll. The Comet’s were ranked No. 1 in local and state polls for the entire 2013 season.

Two goals by junior forward Rachel Holloway helped lead Mason to a 2-0 victory over St. Ursula Academy Saturday night in their 2013 season and home opener. The game was dominated by midfield play by both teams and saw Mason take only nine shots on goal to St. Ursula's six, all in the second half.

Holloway scored on a penalty kick just 2 minutes into the game after being fouled in the box. About 14 minutes into the second half, senior forward Chloe Knue found Holloway on the back post for her second goal of the game.

The Mason defense, lead by its tandem of goalkeepers, senior Kelsey Harris and sophomore Toni Bizzarro combined for the shutout.

Mason next plays Tuesday, August 21st, vs. Mt. Notre Dame at home.

Mason (1-0-1) and Mount Notre Dame (0-0-1) played 80 minutes of scoreless soccer in what turned out to be a defensive struggle. The game was dominated by defensive and midfield play by both teams and saw Mason take only three shots on goal to Mount Notre Dame's one, taken in the first half.

The Mason defense, utilizing seven players during the game, including seniors Lauren Harris and Margo Walton, limited Mount Notre Dame's scoring opportunities and allowed senior Kelsey Harris and sophomore Toni Bizzarro to combine for the shutout.

Mason next plays Saturday, August 24th, at Loveland (1-0-0).

Mason (4-0-1), with goals from three different seniors, beat Lebanon (1-2-2) Saturday night by a score of 3-0. Lebanon managed six shots on goal, three in each half, while Mason managed thirteen shots on goal, nine in the second half, during the match.

Senior Chloe Knue was awarded a penalty kick after being tripped in the box and placed the kick just beyond the fingers of the diving Lebanon keeper with a minute and a half remaining in the first half, allowing Mason to take a 1-0 lead into half time. About nineteen minutes into the second half, Knue took the ball to the end line and crossed back into the center of the box, finding fellow senior forward Taylor Sheppard for the one touch finish and her first goal of the season. About eight minutes later, junior Emily Calvani took the ball to the end line on the opposite side of the goal and crossed back into the center of the box, finding senior Alex Niehoff streaking toward the goal for the one touch finish and her first goal of the season.

The Mason defense, utilizing seven different players during the match and lead by its tandem of goalkeepers, senior Kelsey Harris and sophomore Toni Bizzarro with three saves each, combined for the shutout.

Mason next plays and opens conference play Tuesday night, September 10th, at Lakota East (0-4-1).

Mason (4-1-1, 0-1-0), opened the GMC season with a 1-2 loss at Lakota East (1-4-1, 1-0-0) Tuesday night. After yielding two goals on three shots on goal in the first half, Mason held Lakota East to zero shots on goal in the second half, but was unable to score the equalizing goal with seven total shots on goal and nine corner kicks in the match.

Lakota East scored less than a minute into the match on a head ball off of a corner kick into the box. Lakota East's second goal came with eleven and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Senior forward Chloe Knue scored Mason's lone goal with seventeen minutes remaining in the second half, with the assist going to junior midfielder Jill Vetere. Mason managed several other opportunities during the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Mason next plays conference foe Hamilton (2-3-1, 0-1-0) at home on Thursday night, September 12th, at 7:00pm.

Mason (5-1-1, 1-1-0) managed their first conference win by a score of 1-0 against Hamilton (2-4-1, 0-2-0) at home Thursday night in a defensive battle. Mason managed eight shots on goal, while holding Hamilton to only two shots on goal, one in each half of the match.

The lone goal of the match came off of the foot of Mason senior forward Chloe Knue about 6 minutes into the match. Knue fought her way onto the receiving end of a free kick into the box from junior defender Dani Meyer, and was able to poke the ball past the charging Hamilton goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The goal is Knue's sixth of the year.

The shutout is the fourth of the year for Mason's defense.

Mason next plays Tuesday, September 17th in a conference match at Sycamore (4-1-2, 1-0-1).

Mason (6-1-1, 2-1-0), with goals from three different players and a six point performance by senior forward Chloe Knue, handed Sycamore (4-2-2, 1-1-1) their first conference loss Tuesday night by a score of 4-0. Sycamore managed five shots on goal, all in the first half, while Mason managed fifteen shots on goal, during the match.

Senior Alex Niehoff started the scoring for the Comets with a goal about ten minutes into the match, collecting a rebound after a save by the Sycamore goalkeeper on a shot by fellow senior Chloe Knue and putting it back on goal, just inside the far post. Mason took a 1-0 lead into half time.

Just over 4 minutes into the second half, Knue collected a long ball into the box from junior defender Dani Meyer, beat a defender and fired a shot past the Sycamore goalkeeper. With nearly sixteen minutes remaining in the match, Knue beat a defender just outside the box and slotted a pass to a charging junior Alberta Negri, who collected the pass and scored her first career varsity goal. About 12 minutes later, junior midfielder Jill Vetere found Knue with a perfect pass, allowing Knue to beat the Sycamore goalkeeper and score her 2nd goal of the match and making the score 4-0.

The Mason defense, lead by sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro with five saves, recorded their fifth shutout of the year.

Mason next plays Thursday night, September 19th, at conference foe Princeton (1-5-1, 0-2-0).

Lead by a two assist, one goal performance by junior midfielder Emily Calvani, Mason (7-1-1, 3-1-0), won their third conference game in a row at Princeton (1-6-2, 0-3-1) by a score of 3-1. Mason out shot Princeton on goal sixteen to five in the match.

The scoring was started by junior midfielder Jill Vetere who, after receiving a cross back into the middle of the box from Calvani, blasted a shot past the Princeton goalkeeper just two and a half minutes into the match. While Mason had several other good scoring opportunities in the first half, they were unable to convert and took a 1-0 lead into half time.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, senior forward Chloe Knue received a cross from Calvani and scored her conference leading ninth goal of the season. About 10 minutes later, Knue returned the favor, crossing the ball back into the box and onto the feet of the streaking Calvani, who quickly placed the ball into the back of the net, giving Mason a 3-0 lead half way through the second half.

With just over five minutes remaining, the Mason defense, lead by sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro, yielded a goal to Princeton, resulting in the final game score of 3-1.

Mason next plays Saturday at 5:00 PM, September 21st, at home in a nonconference match against Milford (3-1-5, 2-1-0).

At home on Senior Day, a pair of Mason (8-1-1, 3-1-0) seniors combined for the only goal of the match, resulting in a win against visiting Milford (3-2-5, 2-1-0) by a score of 1-0. While Milford out shot Mason on goal in the match, six shots to five shots, Mason was able to prevail in the defense dominated match.

Seniors Kelsey Harris, Lauren Harris, Chloe Knue, Alex Niehoff, Taylor Sheppard and Margo Walton were recognized before the game for their contributions to Mason Soccer during their high school careers.

While both teams generated opportunities to score in the first half, both defenses and goalkeepers prevailed and the first half came to an end with the score tied, 0-0.

Just under 3 minutes into the second half, senior forward Chloe Knue was able to dribble to the end line and cross the ball back toward the mouth of the goal, finding fellow senior Alex Niehoff for the one touch shot. The Milford goalkeeper was able to block the shot, but Niehoff stayed with it, one touching the rebound past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the only goal of the game.

The Mason defense, lead by sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro with six saves, recorded their sixth shutout of the season.

Mason next plays Tuesday night, September 24th, at home in a conference match against Colerain (4-5-1, 1-2-1).

Mason (10-1-2, 5-1-0) and Ursuline Academy (5-4-3, 2-2-0) played 80 minutes of scoreless soccer Saturday evening (0-0). The game was dominated by defensive and midfield play by both teams and saw Mason take seven shots on goal, five in the second half, while limiting Ursuline to zero shots on goal during the match.

The Mason defense, utilizing seven players during the game, including juniors Emily Calvani, Meghan Grable, Dani Meyer, Tessa Stewart, Jamilla Sylvester and Ellie Tomassoni limited Ursuline's scoring opportunities and allowed the goal keeping tandem of sophomore Toni Bizzarro and senior Kelsey Harris to combine for the team's eighth shutout of the season.

Mason next plays Tuesday, October 1st, at Fairfield (6-1-5, 3-0-3) in a key, late season Greater Miami Conference game.

Mason (10-2-2, 5-2-0) suffered their second Greater Miami Conference loss of the season, falling to Fairfield (7-1-5, 4-0-3) on the road Tuesday night by a score of 2-3. After taking a two goal first half lead, Mason surrendered three second half goals on four shots on goal.

Senior forward Chloe Knue scored Mason's first goal just over 17 minutes into the match with the assist going to junior midfielder Courtney Thierauf. With just under a minute remaining in the first half of the match, junior forward Rachel Holloway received a pass from senior midfielder Alex Niehoff and beat the charging Fairfield goalkeeper for Mason's second goal of the match. Mason took a 2-0 lead into the half.

In the second half, Fairfield applied additional offensive pressure and generated twice as many shots on goal as in the first half, netting three goals. Fairfield scored just under 10 minutes into the second half and tied the score at 2-2 just 8 minutes later. With just over three and a half minutes remaining in the match, a Fairfield offender split two Mason defenders and beat the charging senior goalkeeper, Kelsey Harris, to put Fairfield up to stay, 2-3.

While Mason's defense held Fairfield to six shots on goal for the match, they also gave up more goals than in any previous match, three. Mason finished the match with 12 shots, 10 of those on goal.

Mason next plays conference leader Oak Hills (7-1-3, 4-0-2) at home on Thursday night, October 3rd, at 7:00pm.

The Mason Lady Comets, in their final regular and Greater Miami Conference game of the season, prevailed over Lakota West (6-8-1, 5-3-1) by a score of 1-0 on Tuesday night. Fairfield (6-0-3) and Mason (7-2-0) will share the 2013 GMC Championship. Mason has now won or shared the GMC girls soccer title 5 of the last 7 seasons since entering the league in 2007.

In a match dominated by defensive and possession soccer, Mason managed eight second half shots on goal after only five in the first half while holding Lakota West to four shots on goal for the match. Both teams generated minimal opportunities to score in the first half, as both teams played solid defense and ball possession soccer and the first half came to an end with the score tied, 0-0.
 
Mason opened the second half with significant offensive pressure.  Almost seven minutes into the second half, junior Emily Calvani crossed the ball to the six where fellow junior Rachel Holloway headed the ball to the feet of senior forward Chloe Knue who quickly fired a shot for the only goal of the game and her thirteenth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Jill Vetere created several scoring opportunities during the game, particularly in the second half, only to be denied by solid goalkeeping from Lakota West.

Mason (12-2-2) girls soccer, who are ranked No. 2 in recent city polls, has earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Sectional Tournament. They will host Amelia HS (who defeated Princetont 2-0) this Thursday, Oct. 17th at 7:00 PM.

Mason (14-2-2), with a 1-0 hard fought post season victory over Milford (7-4-7) in the Sectional Championship match, will advance to the District Championship match Thursday night against Beavercreek (14-3-1).

The only goal of the game came with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. Senior forward Chloe Knue, after beating her defender on the dribble, took the ball to the end line and crossed the ball back into the middle of the goal mouth and to a streaking junior forward Rachel Holloway, who one touched a solid shot past the diving Milford goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Both teams played solid team defense throughout the match, with Mason managing just five shots on goal while Milford managed six.

The Mason defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro with six saves, held Milford to one corner kick for the match and recorded their eleventh shutout of the season.

Mason will play 3rd seeded Beavercreek this Thursday night, October 24th, at 7:00pm at Lakota East HS. The Lady Comets will be seeking their 4th District Championship and a trip to next Tuesday's Regional Semi-Finals.

Mason Girls Soccer Repeat As District Champions!

Its another trip to the Sweet Sixteen for the Mason Girls Soccer Team! Last night, the 9th ranked Comets, earned an impressive 2-0 win over 6th ranked Beavercreek (14-4-1) in the Southwest Distict Finals. . It was a raw and blustery evening at Lakota East, but the weather conditions didn't seem to bother the Mason girls. With the win, the Lady Comets (15-2-2) advance to next weeks Regional Semi-Final. The achievement is the programs fourth overall District Title (2001,2010,2012, 2013).

The first half saw Mason tally seven shots on goal and Beavercreek four shots on goal, with neither team being able to find the back of the net. Mason did have several scoring opportunities that were either just off the mark or knocked away by the Beaver goalie. The first half ended as the game began, 0-0.

With nearly seventeen minutes gone in the second half, junior defender Dani Meyer launched a throw-in well into the box and to the head of sophomore midfielder Julianne Berry. Berry headed the ball to the center of the box and to the feet of senior forward Alex Neihoff who fired a shot past the diving Beavercreek goalkeeper givin the Comets a 1-0 lead.

Just over six minutes later, Neihoff trapped a booming punt from sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro and promptly flicked the ball forward to the feet of junior forward Rachel Holloway who was streaking toward the Beavercreek goal. Holloway beat her defender on the dribble just inside the box and fired a shot past the Beavercreek goalkeeper, making the score 2-0.

Mason's defense, led by senior Margo Walton and juniors Meghan Grable, Meyer and Ellie Tomassoni, along with juniors Tessa Stewart and Jamilla Sylvester off of the bench and Bizzarro in goal, held Beavercreek to two second half shots. This included just one shot on goal, one corner kick for the match. The Lady Comets earned their twelfth shutout of the season and third of the post season. Bizzarro recorded six saves during the match.

Mason will play Loveland in the Regional Semi-Final next Tuesday night, October 29th, 7:00pm at a site yet to be determined. Loveland defeated Springboro 1-0 on Thursday night to advance. The Comets earned an early season 3-1 win over the Tigers way back on August 24th. Next Tuesday's match promises to be much closer with an opportunity on the line to play for a Regional Title and return trip to State!

GIRLS SOCCER ADVANCES TO REGIONAL FINAL!

The outstanding postsesaon play of the Mason Girls Soccer Team continued on Tuesday night as they shutout Loveland (17-3-0) by a score of 3-0 in the Regional Semi-finals at Kings.With the victory the Lady Comets earn an opportunity to play for a return trip to the State Final Four, as they advance to Saturday's Regional Final (Great Eight).

Most of the first half it was a defensive/midfield battle between the Comets and the Tigers. With just under four minutes remaining in the first half though, senior forward Alex Neihoff slotted a through pass to junior midfielder Jill Vetere who received the ball in stride, beat a defender and then beat the charging Loveland goalkeeper for the first score of the match, putting Mason.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Vetere slotted a through pass to senior forward Chloe Knue who received the ball in stride, beat the charging Loveland goalkeeper and put Mason up 2-0. Then about eight and a half minutes later, senior forward Taylor Sheppard slotted a through pass to Neihoff who received the ball in stride, beat the charging Loveland goalkeeper again and scored Mason's third and final goal of the match.

While Mason managed only three shots on goal in the first half, they tallied nine shots on goal in the second half. In contrast, Loveland managed six shots on goal in the first half, but Mason, playing outstanding team defense, limited Loveland to just three shots on goal in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded nine saves as Mason recorded their thirteenth shutout of the season.

Mason (16-2-2, 9th in state polls) will play St. Ursula Academy (16-1-3, 4th in state polls) this Saturday, November 2nd, at 3:00 pm at Lakota East High School. The Lady Bull Dogs (#1 seed) only loss of the season occured when both teams opened the 2013 season against each other. Mason (#2 seed) prevailed in that contest 2-0. Saturday's match will be a much bigger challenge as both teams have improved dramatically since August.

Lady Comets Shock St. Ursula to Claim Regional Title

Mason (17-2-2) earned a 1-0 win over St. Ursula Academy (16-2-3) on Saturday to claim the 2013 Regional Championship and advance to the State Final Four for the second year in a row. It was a game filled with drama and shifts in momentum. Nearly twenty fouls were called in the contest with the lone goal coming in the last 3 minutes of the match.

The first half saw Mason limited to three shots on goal and SUA tallying six shots on goal, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Bulldogs outshot Mason 30 to 4 in the first half and ended as the game began, 0-0. In the second half, Mason created additional scoring opportunities and recorded six shots on goal while limiting SUA to four shots on goal.
 
With nearly thirty-seven minutes gone in the second half, junior defender Dani Meyer launched a throw-in to the near edge of the box and to the head of sophomore midfielder Julianne Berry.  Berry headed the ball back, to the center edge of the box and to the feet of junior midfielder Jill Vetere. Vetere dribbled left, then back to the right to create a crease through the Bulldog defense.  Vetere quickly fired a shot low and hard from about 18 yards out and past the SUA goalkeeper for the winning goal.

Mason played solid team defense throughout the match, recording their fourteenth shutout of the year.  Sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded a season high ten saves during the match with incredible play against the constant pressure of the St. Ursula defense.
 
The Lady Comets (ranked #9) will get another shot at a State Championship starting Tuesday night in the State Semi-Finals when they face Pickerington HS North (19-0-1) 7:00pm at Bellbrook HS. Pickerington (ranked #3) defeated Bishop Watterson 2-0 on Saturday to advance. The winner will play for a State Championship at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, Nov. 8th.

GIRLS SOCCER RETURNS TO STATE FINAL ON FRIDAY

Tuesday night's Girls Soccer State Semi-Final match looked very much like a repeat of exactly what happened 12 months ago. Same team, location and same result....the Mason Girls Soccer team is heading back to the State Finals!
For the second year in a row, Mason scored in the first sudden death overtime period against Pickerington North to win a hard fought 1-0 victory and advance once again to play for their program's first state title.

In the 93rd minute of the match, junior forward Rachel Holloway beat her defender wide and took the ball to the endline quickly firing a centering cross that was slightly misdirected by senior forward Taylor Sheppard and directly across the path of the charging senior forward Chloe Knue. Knue, the leading scorer for Mason this year, knew exactly what to do with a ball crossing her path fifteen yards from goal - a one touch shot low and hard to the keeper's right and into the back of the net for the game winning goal.

The first half saw Mason talley five shots on goal, while limiting Pickerington to just three shots on goal. One of those was a penalty kick awarded for a foul in the box with about six minutes remaining in the first half that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro. The first half ended as the game began, 0-0.

The second half was very much like the first half, with each team limiting the other's chances for quality offensive opportunities, with Mason again managing five shots on goal, while allowing Pickerington four shots on goal. After 80 minutes of soccer, the team's remained tied 0-0.

The first overtime period saw Pickerington create two solid scoring opportunities before Knue scored the game winning goal with just over two minutes remaining.
The Mason defense, anchored in the middle by juniors Meghan Grable and Dani Meyer and the midfield, led by junior Jill Vetere and sophomore Julianne Berry, played solid team defense throughout the match. They limited Pickerington HS North's quality scoring opportunities and held them to one corner kick on the evening. The defense recorded their fifteenth shutout of the year and Bizzarro recorded seven saves during the match.

The Comets advance to Friday’s championship game at Columbus Crew Stadium, where they’ll face Walsh Jesuit (19-0-3), which beat Rocky River Magnificat 1-0 in the other semifinal. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.

Mason (18-2-2) enters that title game with a streak of six consec­utive postseason shutouts and more than eight hours of playoff soccer without yielding a single goal.

Lady Comets State Runner-up!

The Mason Girls Soccer Team finish as the second best team in the State of Ohio in 2013, in what many thought would be a rebuilding year. The Lady Comets fell 2-0 to a very good Walsh Jesuit team on Friday night in the State Championship at Columbus Crew Stadium. The feat is a tremendous accomplishment considering the Lady Comets were the tourney underdogs and not expected to be back in the State Championship for the second straight year.
Jesuit utilized a combination of technical and physical ability to keep Mason on the defensive throughout much of the contest and limit the Comets offensive opportunities. The Warriors got on the board first in the 36th minute when Mason (18-3-2) could not clear the ball from danger and paid with the games first goal.

Set pieces set up the Warriors' second goal of the night in the 69th minute when a service was misplayed in the goal box giving Jesuit a 2-0 lead. In the first few seconds of the game, Mason had their best chance for a goal and early lead, but a hard shot went wide left. Mason had another great opportunity off a beautifully placed corner kick with 12 minutes left in the half, as a couple Comets had chances at it, but couldn’t finish it in. That would have tied the game at 1-1 and possibly changed the direction of the game.

‘‘They (Walsh) pressed us harder than anybody’s pressed us all year,’’ said Mason head coach Andy Schur. ‘‘Until you experience that level of pressure, it takes a little while in a game to adjust. They put us on our back foot a lot on Friday.’’

The Comets say goodbye to six special and talented seniors (Kelsey Harris, Lauren Harris, Chloe Knue, Alex Niehoff, Taylor Sheppard and Margo Walton) who accomplished so much over their four-year careers with an overall record of 69-11-7. A host of Mason underclassman got a taste of the “big stage” this season and will be ready and eager to bring their team back to the State Championships in the fall of 2014.

Congratulations to all the players, coaches and fans on a tremendous, never-to-be forgotten 2013 season!

Mason Girls Tennis won their second GMC Championship on Saturday. The Lady Comets last title came their very first year in the GMC back in 2007. Mason paced 3 points ahead of 2nd place and defending champion Sycamore tog capture the 2013 league title. The team also won the regular season head-to-head matches with a perfect 9-0 record against other GMC teams.

Lynn Kelly won 2nd singles, Amanda Huser won third singles and the sister duo of Isabel and Nina Cepeda won 1st doubles. All four were named First Team All GMC. Haley Hopkins and Radhika Pandit finished 2nd for second doubles while Elizabeth Kong was third overall at first singles.

Head Coach Mike Reid earned GMC Co-Coach of the Year. Next up the team will play in the OHSAA sectional at Mason on Wednesday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 5.

Mason, ranked No. 1 in The Enquirer’s Division I area coaches’ poll, defeated No. 2 Sycamore 3-2 in the Southwest Division I girls’ district finals Tuesday and advances to the Ohio Tennis Coaches’ Association state team final four in Columbus on Oct. 19.

Mason senior Lynn Kelly faced Sycamore sophomore Maggie Skwara in the deciding match. Kelly came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to give the Comets the win. Mason remained perfect at 20-0.

The Mason girl's tennis contingent to State ran into some tremendous competition this past weekend at the Division 1 State Championships in Columbus. None of the Lady Comets Qualifers placed, but still ended tremendous seasons both individually and collectively at the highest level of state competition.

Congratulations to Lizzy Kong (singles) and doubles qualifers, Lynn Kelly, Nina Cepeda, Isabel Cepeda and Amanda Huser. This very young group of talented players (Isabel, Amanda, and Lizzy) and their underclassman teammates will certainly return next season with their sites on another trip to State!

The Varsity Volleyball team came out strong last evening and defeated Roger Bacon 25-7, 25-13, 25-20. The victory was due to a solid team effort!

Senior Molly Tucker led the team with 12 kills and 13 digs, Junior Paige Meyer had 9 kills and 7 blocks, Senior Megan Mumma with 4 kills and 3 blocks, Sophomore Emily Malsch dished out 16 assists and served 5 service aces. Great job Ladies!

The Varsity Volleyball team had a huge win Tuesday night by defeating McAuley 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 27-25. Junior Katie Puisis helped lead the team with 19 setting assists, 5 service aces, 17 digs and 8 kills; Senior Molly Tucker pounded down 13 kills and added 14 digs; Junior Paige Meyer had 5 blocks and 5 kills.

The Comets will play Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7:15 at Lakota West. This is an important night at West as it is Volley for the Cure.

The Mason Varsity Volleyball team played with heart and passion as they pulled out an exciting 5 set victory over Lakota West 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-12 on Thursday night! This win was a solid TEAM effort!

The Varsity Volleyball team continued their dominant play by defeating Lakota East 30-28, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17 on Tuesday night. Senior Molly Tucker led the hitters with 20 kills along with 25 digs; Junior Ally King pounded down 18 kills and 24 digs; Junior Paige Meyer had crucial kills at key times totaling 14 kills with 1 error and 6 blocks; Junior Katie Puisis had 36 setting assists and 18 digs; Junior Kayla Rotundo led the defense with 35 digs.

It was a great win for the Lady Comets over a tough GMC opponent. The team visits Hamilton on Thursday.

The Varsity Volleyball pulled a tight win against the Sycamore Aviators 25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 28-26 on Tuesday night. The Comets rallied together at 18-23 in set 4 to take the game! It was a solid team effort to put the Comets on top of the GMC with a
4-0 record and 10-2 overall.

The outside duo of Senior Molly Tucker and Junior Ally King pounded down 11 and 14 kills respectfully. Junior setter Katie Puisis added 9 kills and 22 assists. Junior Paige Meyer added 11 kills and 5 blocks. Junior Kayla Rotundo led our defense with 39 digs.

The Varsity Volleyball team improved their record to 11-2 and 5-0 in the GMC by defeating Princeton 25-8, 25-21, 25-15 on Thursday. Junior Ally King tallied 12 kills, 3 aces and 6 digs; Senior Kelsey McKinley pounded down 9 kills and had 4 blocks; Senior Megan Mumma had 5 kills; Senior Ally Malsch had 4 kills.

The Comets will host Ursuline on Saturday at 2pm.

The Varsity Volleyball team lost to #3 in the state Ursuline Academy on Saturday by scores of 17-25, 20-25, 15-25. Sophomore Emily Malsch had 17 assists and 12 digs; Senior Molly Tucker had 9 kills and 8 digs. Juniors Paige Meyer and Ally King each had 8 kills.

The Comets (11-3) travel to Kettering Fairmont on Monday, Sept. 23.

Senior Molly Tucker and Ally King each had 6 kills and 8 and 11 digs respectively. Junior Katie Puisis had another solid game with 12 assists, 9 digs and 2 service aces. Sophomore Emily Malsch dished out 18 assists.

The Comets go to 13-3 and 6-0 in the GMC. They will host Middletown tomorrow at 7pm.

The Comets are 14-3 overall and sit alone at the top of the GMC at 7-0. They will play Beavercreek and Seton tomorrow at Seton starting at 11am.

The Varsity Volleyball team went 1-1 over the weekend. The Comets lost to Beavercreek 10-25, 25-15, 25-22. Junior Ally King had 13 digs and 7 kills; Senior Molly Tucker had 11 kills and 5 digs. The setting duo of Junior Katie Puisis and Sophomore Emily Malsch 15 and 16 assists each.

Mason bounced back to defeat Seton 25-20, 25-19. Junior Paige Meyer led the offense with 8 kills; Junior setter Katie Puisis had 15 assists, 4 service aces and 4 kills.

Last evening at Senior Night, the Comets came away with a great victory over Fairfield 25-23, 25-11, 25-18. Senior Molly Tucker pounded down 12 kills while Juniors Ally King and Paige Meyer contributed 10 kills a piece. Senior Alex Marquardt had a solid performance with 2 blocks and 3 assists. Junior Katie Puisis dished out 22 assists.

The Comets will battle Oak Hills tomorrow for a possible 1st time GMC Championship at Oak Hills.

The Comets (16-5) fell to an unbelievable defensive Oak Hills team last night by scores of 24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23. The Comets came out strong, but could not get the ball to fall against an amazing Highlander defensive effort.

Junior Katie Puisis of Mason served 5 aces, dished out 29 assists and had 17 digs; Junior Ally King pounded away 13 kills and had 14 digs.

The Lady Comets (8-1 GMC) have completed their league play and clinched at least a tie in the conference with Lakota East (7-1) pending the final results of their match agaisnt Hamilton next Tuesday. This will be the girls volleyball program first GMC Championship since joining the league in 2007. Mason finished 2nd in 2007 and 2008 with an identical league mark of 8-1.

Mason wraps up their regular season next Wednesday at Turpin.

Mason has earned the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Sectional Tourney. They will play the winner of the Kings/Colerain match on Thursday, Oct. 17th at Kings at 6:00 PM.

The Mason Varsity Volleyball team opened up the Sectional tournament Thursday night with a confident win over Kings (19-3) by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 25-14.

Junior Katie Puisis dished out 26 setting assists along with contributing 16 digs and 2 service aces; Junior Kayla Rotundo was on fire in the backrow leading the team with 25 digs and serving 3 aces; Junior Ally King pounded down 14 kills, 17 digs and 2 service aces. Senior Molly Tucker had 12 kills and 14 digs.

The Mason Volleyball team ended their season on Saturda yin the Sectional Championship to Lakota East- 22-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-25. The Comets were lead by Junior Ally King who pounded down 19 kills and had 9 digs; Junior Katie Puisis with 30 assists and 11 digs; Junior Kayla Rotundo with 19 digs and 2 service aces.

The Lady Comets had an outstanding season including a first-time Co-GMC Championship. They ended their season 18-6.
