Girls Season Comes to End

The Mason Comet Girls Basketball team was hoping the "third time would be the charm" when they faced Kettering Fairmont in the Regional Tournament semifinals at Wright State last night. Unfortunately, Lady Luck was not on the Lady Comets side as Mason bowed out of the post season with a heart wrenching 67-63 loss in overtime. The Comets led by 8 with 1:36 remaining, but couldn't hold off the determined Firebirds. It would mark the third year in a row that Fairmont ended the Comets season.
The opening 8 minutes of play Mason gained a small advantage and led 11-10. In the second quarter Fairmont took their first lead with 2 minutes remaining. Lauren Van Kleunen's shot at the buzzer sent Mason into the locker room with a 24-23 lead.

Mason led by as many as 7 in the third quarter, but headed to the fourth quarter with a slim 2-point advantage. In the final 8 minutes Mason turned up the defense while Fairmont missed free throws. The Comets 8 point advantage with under two minutes to play looked like it would be enough to send them to their second consecutive Elite Eight appearance. With less than 10 seconds remaining though Fairmont sent the game to overtime on a 3-point basket.

In overtime both teams traded baskets earlier on, but it was Fairmont that was able to establish a lead forcing Mason to foul in the final minutes. The Firebirds were able to make free throws and advance ending the Comets historic season.

It will be a season to remember once the sting of last nights loss is forgotton. The 2012-13 Mason Girls basketball team won their first ever GMC Championship, along with Sectional and District titles and finished with the second best overall record in school history. The outstanding basketball careers of Mason's seven seniors will long be remembered. They include Kayla McDowell, Sami Rutowski, Aly Herren, Sarah Ammons, Maddie Melnick, Sydney Neal and Liz Lothrop.

Congratulations to all the Lady Comets and coaches on another fantastic season.!
