BOYS GOLF ENDS TREMENDOUS SEASON AT STATE!
The Mason boys golf team finished 2017 where most high school teams only dream...at the State Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
The Comets arrived at the OSU Scarlet course Friday to a perfect fall day. No wind and 55-60 degrees for their 9 am start on Hole #10 leading to an afternoon in the low 70s. Knowing the firepower of the competition, the Comets set sites on first beating the 10th place (676) finish of the 2012 Mason team that last visited state. Everything else would be icing on the cake as State Championship teams are not born overnight.
Teeing off on the back 9, the course won the initial battle as the top score was 42. After the turn the Comets seemed to gain a little momentum with most posting better rounds led by Junior Jack Soper with a 38 on the second 9 to finish with a team best 80. Their team 333 on Day 1 put them in 9th place.
It would not be enough for the Comets to compete for the title with Columbus based powerhouse Dublin Jerome leading the field by 13 with a team score of 295, possibly a state record. However, still on pace to set their school record, the Comets looked to regroup and improve on this start.
Saturday was another gorgeous day in Columbus with perfect fall weather. The Comets were off at 9:50 am on Hole #10, with just slightly warmer conditions and touch more breeze at times. Comet nation was out in force Saturday with players, parents and fans from both present and past teams showing up to support the team.
They quickly realized however that it would be no walk in the park, as most green pin placements were tightened up and for this final championship round. The second day start was better for most with top score of 39 by Senior Charlie Woolson on the first 9 as he drained a birdie and eagle to fast start his round. While the Comets continued to battle, they were only able to shave a couple strokes off of their Day 1 total, finishing with a team 331. Team scoring was again led by Junior Jack Soper with 80 for a team best 160 (T-27th overall). Their final team score of 664 set a new school record and put them in 8th place in the field. See scores below:
Junior: Jack Soper 80, 80
Senior: Charlie Woolson 84, 82
Junior: Cameron Madden 85, 83
Junior: Jake Amann 84, 86
Senior: Em-J Galang 85, 86
Congratulations to the Mason Comets golf team on a record setting season. While this 2017 Comets advanced the school program to a new level, setting school several records, they know they have more to give. With a taste of State competition, they hunger to return next year even stronger and compete for a championship.
Congratulations to all the players and coaches!
