Mason ran into Colerain for the 2nd time in 2017 this past Friday in the Regional Semi-Final at Princeton. After a 1st round win against West Clermont the week before, the Comets were looking for their first trip to the Division 1 Regional Final. The Cardinals would have none of that and put together a stout defense, along with a punishing running attack to end Mason's season, securing a 49-21 victory.
Mason entered Friday's matchup riding a wave of four consecutive shutouts, and Colerain took less than two minutes to spoil that. On its opening possession of the game, Colerain put the Mason defense in a spin cycle on a 40-yard touchdown run.
Colerain would tack on two more scores in the first half to lead 21-0 at halftime. Mason was able to get going in the second half offensively behind senior running back Matt Sora, who finished with 29 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown in his 35th consecutive varsity start.
It was a frustrating evening for the Comets. Every time Mason was able to post some points, Colerain had a response. Will Adams got Mason on the board at 8:31 in the third quarter with a 33-yard TD pass. Sora scored on a 1-yard burst at the end of the quarter and Adams tossed 2-yard pass to Tanner Knue in the fourth to round out the Comet scoring on the night.
Adams finished with 7 of 15 passing for 96 yards and 45 on the ground. Connor Gary added 37 yards rushing on 5 carries.
Colerain advances to meet St. Xavier this Friday at Mason in the Regional Final. Mason finished the season at 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the GMC (3-way time for 2nd place with Sycamore and Fairfield).
Congratulations to all the players and coaches and thank you for another memorable season of Comet Football.
