Comets Girls Golf Smash League Scoring Record!
The Mason Girls Golf Team took down the GMC’s team scoring record for the second time in 37 years on Wednesday at Walden Ponds Golf Course and did so in record-breaking fashion. Mason captured their program’s 9th overall GMC Championship (since entering the league in 2007) in a “GMC Title Run Away.” The Comets shot a two-day team score of 579, besting the previous record by 13 strokes (592) set ten years ago by the 2010 Mason Girls. That team would go on to win the Comet’s third straight state title (2008, 2009, 2010) under head coach Fred Reeder. After Round 1 on Tuesday, the Comets built a 37-stroke lead (292) over last year’s defending champs, Lakota East. On Wednesday, the girls put up an even stronger effort with a team score of 287 blowing away 2nd place Sycamore (661 team score) with an 82-stroke margin, the largest winning spread in the history of GMC girls golf. Lakota East finished third behind the Aves with a team total of 664. Senior Catherine Zhang led the charge for Mason and the GMC field shooting 72-70 for a two-day total of 142. For her efforts, Zhang was named the GMC Girls Golfer of the Year.
