Coaching Certification
The following certification requirements are mandated by the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio High School Athletic Association, and the Mason City School District. Certifications must be completed and submitted to the Mason City Schools Athletic Department prior to being permitted to begin coaching duties.

Step 1: Schedule and Obtain Background Check
-Schedule and obtain background check with Marcia Croy at Mason Central Office: (513) 398-0474 ext. 20142
-Please bring the following with you:
-Check in the amount of $50.00 made payable to Mason City Schools.
-Your driver's license.
Step 2: Complete Fundamentals of Coaching Course
-Offered online via the National Federation of High Schools' website www.NFHSLearn.com.
-Cost of the course is $65 and required to be taken only once during your coaching career
-If you have already have completed the course skip to step #3.
Step 3: Complete Pupil Activity Supervisory Permit (PASP) - 3 Year Permit
-Permit is issued by the Ohio Department of Education
-Courses are offered periodically through Atrium Medical Center and are free of charge to coaches affiliated with Mason City Schools
-An online option is available via the National Federation of High Schools' website www.NFHSLearn.com .
The approved substitute course is called "First Aid For Coaches" and costs $45.00. If this option is chosen, the coach is responsible for the cost incurred.
-Once the course is completed there is an application and separate application fee that must be submitted.
-The application is attached and entitled "PASP Application.pdf"
-Please complete the application and select the following:
-On page 2-- 3 Year Pupil Activity Permit (new or renewal)
-On page 2-- all permits should be mailed to the Mason City School District. The Athletic Department will fill in the required IRN #.
-The Athletic Department will handle obtaining the Superintendent's signature once submitted.
-The application fee is $45.00 (in addition to the $45.00 if the course was taken online). Checks may be made out to Treasurer, State of Ohio.
-Certifications will not be issued until the coach has completed the NFHS "Fundamentals of Coaching Course" (information above).
-The application and application fee should be submitted to the Athletic Department once completed and the Athletic Department will submit all paperwork to the State of Ohio for the issuance of the Pupil Activity Permit Card. Both the course and paperwork must be submitted to obtain the permit card. Once the card is issued to the school district from the State of Ohio, a copy will be provided to the coach and a copy will be kept on file in the Athletic Department.
Step 4: Obtain CPR Certifications
-CPR Certifications are held periodically by the Mason High School Athletic Training Staff. Information on upcoming CPR courses are emailed to all coaches ahead of time.
-An online option is available at www.ICPRI.com and is a 2 year certification at a cost of $19.95.
***COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL COSTS INCURRED WHILE COMPLETING COACHING CERTIFICATIONS. THE MASON CITY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DOES NOT REIMBURSE COACHES FOR INCURRED COSTS. HOWEVER, IN SOME CASES INDIVIDUAL BOOSTER GROUPS MAY REIMBURSE COACHES IN THEIR PROGRAM FOR THESE COSTS. THIS ARRANGEMENT IS BETWEEN EACH INDIVIDUAL COACH AND THAT PARTICULAR BOOSTER ORGANIZATION.
Step 5: Complete Mediciation (MED) Training
· How to log on to the online training program:
Using your web browser, go to the web page http://mason.oh.safeschools.com (No “www” is necessary.)
To access your assigned training, enter your username. Your username is your first initial + last name + last four of your ss#
EXAMPLE: mcroy1234
Your assigned course or courses will be listed under “Incomplete Training Assignments.”
Select any course by simply clicking on the name of the course. The courses have audio so turn up your speakers if you wish to hear the narration. Complete all the training scenarios and the assessment to receive completion credit for the course. You will have the option to print out a Certification of Completion once you complete the course.
