Coaching Certification - Directions

- The following certification requirements are mandated by the Ohio Department of Education, Ohio High School Athletic Association, and the Mason City School District. Certifications must be completed and submitted to the Mason City Schools Athletic Department prior to being permitted to begin coaching duties.

Step 1: Schedule and Obtain Background Check

 

 

- Schedule and obtain background check with Marcia Croy at Mason Central Office: (513) 398-0474 ext. 20142

- All coaches must have a valid background check on file at the Mason City School District Central Administration Building.

    **Background checks obtained elsewhere (although valid) will not be honored.

- Please bring a check in the amount of $50.00 made payable to Mason City Schools & your driver's license.

 

 

Step 2: Complete NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course

 

 

- Offered online via the National Federation of High Schools' website www.NFHSLearn.com.

- Cost of the course is $65 and required to be taken only once during your coaching career.

 

 

Step 3: Complete NFHS Concussion in Sports Course

 

 

- Offered online via the National Federation of High Schools' website www.NFHSLearn.com.

- This course is free of charge and must be completed prior to obtaining or renewing your Pupil Activity Supervisory Permit.

 

 

Step 4: Complete Pupil Activity Supervisory Permit (PASP)

 

 

**All non-Mason City School District Employed Coaches must obtain a new background check at the Mason City Schools Central Administration Building when renewing their Pupil Activity Supervisory Permit (see step 1).

 

- Permit is issued by the Ohio Department of Education

 

- Courses are offered periodically through Atrium Medical Center and are free of charge to coaches affiliated with Mason City Schools

- An online option is available via the National Federation of High Schools' website www.NFHSLearn.com.

    - The approved online option is called "First Aid, Health, and Safety for Coaches" and costs $45.00. If this option is chosen, the coach is responsible for the cost incurred.

- Once the course is completed there is an application and fee that must be submitted through the Ohio Department of Education website. http://education.ohio.gov/

**Certifications will not be issued until the coach has completed the NFHS "Fundamentals of Coaching Course" and the NFHS “Concussion in Sports Course” (information in steps #2 & #3 above).

 

 

 

Step 5: Obtain CPR Certifications

 

 

- CPR Certifications are held periodically by the Mason High School Athletic Training Staff. Information for upcoming CPR courses are emailed to head coaches ahead of time.

- Online options are available at www.icpri.com and http://www.onlinecprcertification.net/. The coach is responsible for the cost incurred with the online options.

 

 

Step 6: Complete Medication Administration (MED) Training

 

 

- Online course required to meet state of Ohio and Mason City School District requirements. Please contact Marcia Croy at croym@masonohioschools.com to gain access to this course.



1. Using your web browser, go to the web page http://mason.oh.safeschools.com (No “www” is necessary)

2. To access your assigned training, enter your username.

- Your username is your first initial + last name + last four of your ss#

EXAMPLE: mcroy1234

- Your assigned course or courses will be listed under “Incomplete Training Assignments.”

3. Select any course by simply clicking on the name of the course. The courses have audio so turn up your speakers if you wish to hear the narration.

4. Complete all the training scenarios and the assessment to receive completion credit for the course. You will have the option to print out a Certification of Completion once you complete the course.

 

 

Step 7: Attend Stewards of Children Training Seminar

 

 

- Please contact Jane Johnson at johnsonja@masonohioschools.com for upcoming seminar dates and registration. These onsite training sessions are free of charge.

 

- An ONLINE option is available at the below website. The cost is $10.00. If the online option is completed, please submit a copy of Certificate of Completion to the Athletic Department.

Step 8: Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training (Lindsay’s Law)

 

- Must be completed AFTER steps 1-7. You must hold a current Pupil Activity Permit in order to complete this training

- Offered online via the Ohio Dept. Of Education website

    - Sign in to your ODE SAFE Account

    - Locate LMS and search for courses available

***COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL COSTS INCURRED WHILE COMPLETING COACHING CERTIFICATIONS. THE MASON CITY SCHOOLS ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DOES NOT REIMBURSE COACHES FOR INCURRED COSTS. HOWEVER, IN SOME CASES INDIVIDUAL BOOSTER GROUPS MAY REIMBURSE COACHES IN THEIR PROGRAM FOR THESE COSTS. THIS ARRANGEMENT IS BETWEEN EACH INDIVIDUAL COACH AND THAT PARTICULAR BOOSTER ORGANIZATION.
